Another reaction I’m looking forward to watching. I’m hoping that Interstellar is on the list or have you watched it.

mckenzie s.

i’m so glad y’all are watching this, it’s one of my favorites! it’s soooo beautiful. the ending scene is incredible, and it really makes you sit and think. would you change the future if you knew the outcome? is it better to have loved and lost or to not have loved at all? god i could go on and on

Mike Adams

Probably in my top 5 all time favorite movies.

Jordan Williams

Bedtime POSTPONED lol time to get the snacks

Kev

This is my "desert island" movie. lol The one movie I could watch a billion times and never get bored of it. Great reaction!

Mudge Pendragon

A fantastic movie. Ari says in his talk that we'd be able to know the answers to our questions... You're on the right path. We'd know the answers, before we ever ask the question. I've seen the movie at least 3-4 times over the years it's an amazing piece of cinema, that handles the sciences it throws at the watcher in one of the best ways I've seen in media.

JiaHailstorm

Oh wait, have they really not watched Interstellar? If not I absolutely need them to holy damn.

bhargavi pba

I have been waiting for you guys to watch this! Its really one of those films that makes you sit back and just think. Edit: Another thing to note: We not only realize that Louise chooses to make the same choices knowing that she will lose her child one day, because she chooses love, we also realize that the Heptapods, (Costello and Abbott) who live in a non-linear timeline, already knew that Abbott was going to die. And yet they chose to arrive on Earth and provide their gift of language and communication. The first time i saw this movie I just had to sit back and process the gut punch.

Alina

Annihilation is a great suggestion!

30 seconds in and already getting emotional YES! omg I LOVE alien movies, including Signs but this one takes the cake for me. heck, this one IS the cake. Love the reaction!!!

Helion

I'm confused... was there really a pole for movies, and I missed it?

Alina

Ahh, how I’ve been waiting for this one! Never fails to bring out all the emotions, it’s a wonderfully executed story. I do hope Sicario is in the near future for some more Villeneuve! Also, I can’t not recommend Wind River (2017) for some more Jeremy Renner and TV mini series Sharp Objects (2018) for more Amy Adams!

I love this movie and it always touches me. For a cool trippy time related movie I also recommend “Looper” by Rian Johnson

This is one of those films that I would dub as art. The story is hauntingly gorgeous, the build up is palpable and the acting is refined and sublime. I enjoy the clever use of language, in fact telling us that communication and language are the gateway to expanding our minds and moving us forward as a species. Jeremy Renners first line foreshadows this but it takes us almost the entire film to arrive at that conclusion. That full circle is immense and very satisfying. As you discussed, the message of love being worth having even if you know it is going to end is beautifully discussed and showcased. It is easy to understand why Louise carries on with her life as she knows it will happen, but it is also interesting to ponder if she in fact destroys Ian's life in the process. The time question is also very interesting. I notice in your discussion you didn't get to the extreme version of the question: Are Abbott and Costello in fact aliens? If we consider they use and see time differently, this opens up the idea that they are from the future. If they are from the future, do we know they are in fact not human? Or at least part human? If you head down these paths of thought, some of the scenes can be concieved in a new light yet again. Highly interesting. The acting is, as I mentioned before, sublime. Amy Adams is terrific, portraying so much emotion without saying anything. Constantly subtly shifting between emotions and every time she realises something new we can tell it without her having to say it too us. Excellent acting. Renner as well does a great job. Although not an equally subtle performance, it is easy to buy he actually falls in love with Louise without having to do all the grand posturing usually assumed with a love story. Again, his understated gaze gives all the emotion we need to know how he feels. The cinematography is Villaneuve, so gorgeous. Every shot seems completely thought out and I would assume he has considered everything down to the colourgrading in every single shot. Not a second feels extra or just there because it looks good, no long scenery shots just for the sake of doing it. Every angle choice, every panning and every effect is there to portray the story and I love that about it. In terms of score, we don't get a huge amount, but what we get is completely in tune with the rest of the film. The sounds design in general is excellent and the few moments of music or sound are perfectly paced and suitable. Overall, an excellent film that stays with you. Unique, yet somehow familiar. I'm very glad you liked it.

My first realization after watching Arrival was that I don’t need to feel like I’ve lost the people who have passed away, like my grandfather and one of my best friends a few years ago. Instead, I can welcome the memories I have of them. Remembering those moments almost makes time feel nonlinear, as if I’m reliving those moments again. Just like in the movie, the central question is: if we knew the pain that loss would bring, would it change our willingness to still embrace the experience of love and life? At its core, the film is about grief. Louise’s journey is about accepting loss as part of love, not something to avoid, but something that makes love meaningful. I also kept thinking about how language affects our brains. I grew up learning three languages as a child and two as an adult. Every new language gives me not just words, but another way of seeing the world, and a better understanding of the people who speak it. Even if I’ll never understand or speak it like a native, each language has shifted my perspective on life. This connects directly to another thought I had: how much communication shapes perception. I often struggle with this daily. I tend to communicate literally, and most of the time I also take other people’s words literally. Hidden meanings, metaphors, etc. confuse me often. I don’t understand why people don’t just say exactly what they mean. At the same time, I’ve realized that sayings or phrases can open a window into a culture once you decode them. That’s why the line “Abbott is death process” stuck with me. To most people, it sounds odd, but it reveals a different perspective on death. It’s less about an event and more about a journey. Similarly, the heptapods’ circular writing reflects infinite time.. no beginning, no end. It’s a metaphor for life seen as a whole, not in fragments. Villeneuve once said he wanted the alien language to feel like “a meditation on time itself,” and it truly does. Another moment that stood out was Louise’s book, titled The Universal Language. This mirrors the movie’s biggest theme beyond personal grief: how humanity responds to the unknown. Villeneuve shows that our instinct is often fear, suspicion, and division (which can be seen very clearly around the world (irl) currently), in the film, nations almost go to war over misunderstandings. But the message is clear: survival depends on cooperation, on listening, on dialogue rather than conflict. Something I strongly believe in. More dialogue, even if uncomfortable, it’s necessary. Additionally I wanted to talk about the visuals! Oh boy.. Someone who is much more about the visuals, sound design and editing than the story, this movie was just incredible when it comes to all three categories. Which ofc isn’t surprising, considering who the directed the film. 😅 One thing that immediately stood out was how the cinematography mirrors the heptapod language. Shots are often framed in circles or loops (the spacecraft, the glass, the ink patterns). Even the ship itself looks like a giant punctuation mark, as if the aliens are placing a symbol in our world that demands interpretation. Sound design was equally powerful. The amount of times my whole body was covered in goosebumps from just the sounds.. man! I love how the alien voices weren’t just random noises. Instead they were built from whale songs, slowed-down human voices, and deep resonance tones to make them feel organic. And Jóhannsson’s score… it’s not just background music, it is the emotion of the film. Sometimes it feels like the music is grieving before the characters even realize what’s happening. it felt like this constant tension between dread and beauty. Fun fact: some of the “music” in the opening scene is actually designed to feel like the heptapod language before we’ve even seen it. It’s circular too, looping phrases and drawn-out tones. It’s not a soundtrack you hum afterwards.. it’s one that lives in your bones! And then there’s the editing. This is one of those films you wish you could forget to appreciate it one more time without knowing the ending (a funny thought considering the storyline 😄), but it’s just do amazing the first time around. The editing itself becomes a storytelling tool, teaching us to see the world as Louise learns to (like you guys said as well). Another thing that blew my mind with the cinematography was how intimate it felt, even though the story is literally about aliens arriving on Earth. A lot of shots stay really close on Louise’s face, or linger on small details like her hand touching the glass. It almost makes the whole giant alien event feel secondary compared to her personal experience. Like the movie is telling us: yes, the world might change forever, but what matters most is how it changes you. Back to sound for a second — I love how they used silence. So many modern sci-fi movies fill every second with noise, but here the quiet moments are just as loud. Like when Louise first steps into the ship, there’s this heavy silence that almost feels like sound being sucked out of the air. It made me almost lean in closer, like I was holding my breath. Just masterful sound design! I’ll end with the following: The story is based on Ted Chiang’s short story “Story of Your Life”. Chiang is fascinated by determinism vs. free will. So if time is fixed, are our choices real, or is love still worth it even without freedom? (Sorry for the long text but this is one of my favorite movies of Villeneuve’s, a strong second is Sicario. It also took me a while to set everything up. I wanted to watch the movie with you on the big screen 😅) SICARIO NEXT? 😎😎😎😎😎😎😎

Helion

Ah thanks... Turns out, I didn't miss that one. It's just that I voted for Dante's Peak, and then I saw that reaction first. That's why I got confused.

Alex von Hochtritt

One of the finest films I've ever seen. Makes me weep every time - even though I know how the movies goes. "If you knew your path to your greatest happiness will also bring you your greatest pain - would you still walk that path, if changing it was possible, and lose the pain...and the happiness?" Absolutely stunning creative work.

Victor Ramos

Somebody must’ve mentioned already similar movies “The Arrival and District 9

KatBranDee

Movie suggestion: "SISU". SO GOOD! Sorry I couldn't find the movie suggestion list.

M@xR3acts

From Sicario to Dune, Denis Villeneuve is exceptional!

ChiefKC

With the loss of Robert Redford, it's time for a "Sneakers" reaction.

The Media Knights

Thanks for the suggestion! Adding it to the list if it's not there already ❤️

The Media Knights

Such a beautiful film. Did not expect it to be this emotional. Have not stopped thinking about it since we watched it.

The Media Knights

Thank you so much for taking the time to write this and share with us your love for this film. Agreed on all counts. Especially the way you wrote about the cinematography. It's absolutely gorgeous and tonally matches the film so well.

The Media Knights

Thank you for the suggestion! We are always game for some more Sci-Fi!

The Media Knights

Thank you for the recommendations Alina! Sicario is on the list and we'll be checking that out fairly soon. Been hearing nothing but great things about that one!

The Media Knights

Yeah, we knew both of these films would get covered. Plan was to release Arrival before it but Paramount had other plans for us that resulted in us having to wait till things cooled off a bit.

The Media Knights

This was one of the most unique alien flicks we've ever seen! Did not expect it to talk about humanity, love and unity in such a wonderful way. It caught us completely off guard.

The Media Knights

Hey there Purple Cowboy! Thank you so much for sharing such an in-depth text of your opinion on this film. We love to see the passion for films like these. Out of all the things you mentioned (which we wholeheartedly agree on) the use of silence is what stuck with me the most. After experiencing so many Sci-Fi flicks I have to agree...they do not use silence as much as they should. It is such a powerful tool as seen here! When used correctly it just creates this "tunnel vision" where the audience is absolutely immersed and locked in. This movie was something else, now onto the next Villeneuve flick ❤️ Muchas gracias por el apoyo y por siempre mandarnos mensajes que nos alegran el dia! Un abrazo enorme 😁

The Media Knights

Thank you guys for always hooking us up with some amazing Sci-Fi flicks! Can't wait to check this one out 😁

The Media Knights

The fact that they knew Abbott was gonna die allows the audience to understand just how important this even is to them as well. Without them arriving we don't achieve progress down the line and in turn save both species. So Abbott's sacrifice as tragic as it is, is also a necessity. This movie man...had us sitting for ours thinking about what the message was saying. About the visuals, the score etc. A phenomenal film that is one of those lifechanging movies you see every once in a while.

The Media Knights

Couldn't agree more! The way the mystery unfolds and how they deliver exposition slowly as the characters themselves come to the realization makes us feel like we are also part of that journey. Such an amazing movie! This one is going on our list of favorites!

The Media Knights

Can't wait to watch it a second time now that we know the twist! Surely it's such a different experience now that we've also unlocked the "language" of the film. Thank you so much for watching this with us ❤️

The Media Knights

No wonder! This movie was something else! Thanks to all of you for recommending it 🙌❤️

The Media Knights

The price to pay for love, the grief and sadness we feel when it is over, will always be worth the beautiful memories and the warmth we feel. Now changing the future...that is a tough one.

kachow6969

if you enjoyed the nonlinear story aspect, i think you guys would LOVE memento. you are such thoughtful and attentive reactors that i think you’d enjoy the experience and story a lot :)

Helion

Thanks for clearing that up 😃

Kat Conley

A little late here, but have you guys considered reacting to Interstellar? It's another sci-fi type film but completely different than Arrival. It's actually my favorite movie of all time :)

ThomasMalatesta

"Memento" is one of my favorite movies of all time. Would love to see a reaction to it.

ThomasMalatesta

(Just realized I must have clicked on the Youtube link in the video and posted a full comment there. Oh well. Great movie and great reactions as always.)

Love it

Nowhere Man

This movie is still one of my top 5 favorites. It begins by punching you in the heart, and then it gently leads you down a mesmerizing and relatable path until it punches you in the head, and then it punches you in the heart a second time. What's truly fascinating (from a writing perspective) is that this movie isn't about the aliens. It's about Louise and her "full circle" journey. The aliens are just a plot device to facilitate that journey. The reason Louise and the others are always so tired is because the interaction with the aliens is forcing them into a 16-hour day (instead of the humans’ natural 24-hour day). The one technical detail this show doesn’t address is how the aliens’ technology caused Louise to see the future. Language alone isn’t enough to send and receive information from the future. All it does is make it possible to COMPREHEND that non-linear information. I suspect the aliens’ ship has some kind of quantum-entanglement drive that causes some entities in its proximity to interact with future events like they’re memories. If that quantum entanglement leaves when the aliens leave, then Louise would lose that ability. On the other hand, if the aliens leave behind some kind of device, Louise would retain that power, making her the most powerful human being to have ever lived. Back at the beginning, during Louise’s second visit with the aliens, Abbott leaves when Louise introduces herself. Thank about it: if the aliens can see the future then Abbott knew that it was going to die soon after meeting her. How much courage did that take, to follow through with the mission to Earth anyway? 24 aliens traveled to Earth, but only 23 returned. The brilliance of this movie is that it depends on the viewers interpreting everything in linear temporal order, so during the opening monologue, you don’t realize that it’s not a flashback. Gotcha. And, as you mentioned, there were a LOT of hints. During the first human-alien visit, the camera shows the humans walking upside down. This is the production's way of telling you that the reality of this movie is the exact opposite of what you're being shown. --- Do you want some more mind-blowing theories? Consider this: What if, on different planets, humans evolve to have different bodies (or engineer different types of bodies), and what if the “aliens” are actually humans in 3,000 years? In other words, what if future humans were asking past humans for help? What if the technology of the aliens is so advanced that their appearance was only (partially) an illusion? In other words, what if only two aliens came to Earth, and then APPEARED on each “ship” in a sequential rotation? For that matter, what if the "ships" weren't actually spaceships, but just sophisticated projections, and the aliens were just broadcasting from some other location? Assuming Louise kept the ability to interact with her future, what if her “circular” existence is similar to Groundhog Day or Edge of Tomorrow, where she’s able to make constant adjustments. Doing so would allow her to possibly find a cure for her daughter’s illness. In fact, she could manipulate the entirety of humanity’s future, and make Thanos seem like an amateur. Perhaps the “help” in 3,000 years isn’t given in 3,000 years. Perhaps it’s the result of 3,000 years of manipulation by Louise’s offspring (similar to the Dune novels). If you really want to go down the Dune-esque rabbit hole, what if Hannah's consciousness ends up in a heptapod body, travels back in time, and meets her mother just long enough to help her mother begin her circular journey? Two intersecting circular paths, almost like an infinity symbol. Chew on that one.
