While I do agree with your critiques, especially regarding the lull of ep. 5&6. I think they did that because they needed a narrative reason as to why the kids wouldn't tell the adults and get them involved, and if they think the threat is over, then there's no need to get them involved and subsequently screw up the canon. Because in the original show Hopper and Joyce talk about the year gap as a time of peace, and we don't hear really anything about the kids other than they have been hanging out a lot, and when the summer starts, Mike and El start hanging out more on their own, so barring some memory loss, which I think is unlikely, the adults can't get involved. The biggest questions for me as to how they can tie this into the original show are why the kids are never going to talk about this again, and Nikki's existence.
