I just keep loving this movie more and more. I cry everytime. I just can't even find the words and the words I use just is never enough. Ryan Gosling is perfect in this. About Rocky, he is mainly practical/puppetry enhanced with cg when needed. This movie is so special.

Just finished... it was amazing watching this with you. Where to start? First of all, Rocky is a puppet, and the chief pupeteer, james Ortiz, also voices him. They were looking for a voice, but it just felt natural to keep James' voice, since he was speaking for Rocky in all the scenes anyway. When you say that everyone involved in this project loved this project, you're right. When the book came out, Andy Weir sent it to Ryan Gosling (before it was published, actually) and movie rights were bought right there and then, before the book was made available to the public. This was 6 years ago, I believe. The author always had Ryan in mind when writing Ryland, hence their similar names. I read somewhere they didn't use any green screens, or very few of them. I also learned (I don't know if it's true), that the red dots you see when they take the sample from Adrian are.... Christmas lights! Amazing. Also, I don't know if you are readers, but I highly, highly, highly recommand the audio book. It has so many details that the movie does't include (although it's a very close adaptation). For example, there is another reason why Grace is the one sent in space, and why no one else but him has to go. Book readers were also asked to start reading the book blindly and it was such a great experience when, at chapter 8, the book transforms from being a "save the world" book to a "first contact" book! Amaze amaze amaze. On a personnal note, this book was very important to me also. I read it while I was living with severe post-partum anxiety, and I just went on these long walks with my daughter, headphones on, and I would laugh so much. Andy Weir is a master. And this book is a hug. Ok, enough rumbling... I need to get to work now. It's going to be a long evening. Thanks for reacting to this! PS: forgot to mention that Rocky had been in orbit around Tau Ceti for 46 years before Grace came along. When Ryland looked up at the stars, when he was a child, he had no idea that his future best mate was stranded there, alone. But every time we looked up at the stars, we unknowingly watched him sleep.

Okay I didn't expect this movie to destroy me like this

Desiree Mclaughlin

The same author who wrote this book also wrote The Martian. Both movies are excellent adaptations. If you can find a theater still playing the movie I HIGHLY recommend watching this on the big screen. From the visuals to the score to the sound design, it’s just such an immersive experience.

This movie is splendid, statement.

Hello Media Knights! I'm a French fan and I love your YouTube channel. Your reactions are great, and I've been following you for two years 😊 I'd happy to announce you I have subscribe to your Patreon today. I'd love to make some movie suggestions, if that's ok with you two: - I recommend the HARRY POTTER saga with all eight films. You've probably already seen them, but I'd love to hear your opinions on them (and your reactions, of course). You could even go further by watching the FANTASTIC BEASTS movies! They're not "great" movies, but they're entertaining. For more "independent" films, I highly recommend: - Children of Men (2006, by Alfonso Cuarón), a dystopian action thriller. An absolute masterpiece! It deals with infertility and hope in a world plagued by pain. - Galaxy Quest (1999), a satirical science fiction comedy! (with Sigourney Weaver and Alan Rickman) You will love it! It's hilarious! It's similar in style to The Fifth Element. Have a good day! ☺️

This is an excellent, watched this with my wife at the air and space museum near Dulles airport and it was amazing on IMAX! Looking forward to watching it again with you both! :)

Mister Lou

Did I just find my new favorite sci-fi movie, question? And your reaction was amaze amaze! 2 thumbs up 👎👎

Jordan Williams

Because Eridians haven't discovered special relativity in relation to light speed travel and time dilation, they carried A LOT more Astrophage than they needed for the trip. That's why Rocky had so much to spare, they got to Tau Ceti faster than they thought so they needed less fuel!!

This is an excellent sci-fi, was happy I saw it at the cinema. Might be a few weeks before I watch the full reaction as it’s just come out over here in the U.K. and it’s nearly $30, I also like to buy physical copy of movies I really enjoy and it’s not available until July. Which is annoying as you’d expect it to be released at the same date. ******* Spoilers below ********** A few little things I wasn’t a fan of was, When he was fishing in the upper atmosphere, they tried to make you think is he going to make it or not by putting him in a dangerous situation. But it really wasn’t necessary imo as I never thought he was going to die. The other was the false ending, I didn’t think it was necessary as when they parted ways it should have ended there and then showed clips from him getting back to earth. Also thought it was a little too long dropping around 15 minutes I think would have helped. Maybe after a second watch I might think a bit differently. But none of it spoil the movie as I still really enjoyed it.

Amaze! Amaze! Amaze! Really good movie. Watched it in the theater, it actually got applauded when it was over. Such a feel good movie in the end. You feel happy, sad, suspense, excitement, wonder and a lot more. The score was really amazing as well. Like you, i had no idea what to expect going in to this movie, yes i knew it was sci-fi about saving earth, but that's it. No idea about the tone or feel of the story. You smile uncontrollably at certain scenes like you said and then tears in the next. They really got the comedy and the serious perfectly balanced. One of the best movies in recent years.

Reed James

Rocky isn't dissolving when he's out of his habitat, he's burning. Rocky's atmosphere is hotter than the boiling point of water and his atmosphere is 40 times thicker. It's like he's a deep sea creature. His planet's atmosphere is so thick, sunlight doesn't reach the surface, so that's why he has no eyes. He's actually shocked to learn Grace "hears" light. Since their atmosphere is so thick, radiation doesn't reach the surface, so they are very susceptible to it. And since their ship is going near the speed of light, the free hydrogen atoms in space become radiation. It would kill Grace, too, but the ship's hull is lined with a thin layer of astrophage because nothing gets past them. So if you could survive impacting hydrogen molecules, and you have a constant thrust, you can get closer and closer to the speed of light without ever actually reaching it, but it also causes time and distance dilation to grow exponentially. The hail marry took 13 years to reach Tau Ceti, but for Grace, it was about 4 years. Relativity is the reason this works. The movie has the majority of the beats from the book (especially in space) but it skips a lot of the science and the things humans are doing on earth to both ready for the mission and to stave off devastation. It's a lot bleaker in the book. Also, don't ask what Grace is eating on Rocky's planet. Andy Weir says he knows why Yuen and Ilyushka died, but won't say since he might write a sequel and use that.

Maslaxa Ali

I can’t hear anything but them or see the movie😂is this normal?

Reshonda McKay

I'm so glad you both watched this movie <3 It was truly a wonderful movie, and I'm glad to rewatch it with you both!

Alex von Hochtritt

Rocky's voice was provided by the lead puppeteer, James Ortiz - he was actually speaking Rocky's lines during filming, so Ryan could react correctly, and when it came time to do the audio in post, everyone - cast and crew - said James' voice had to stay, it was perfect. And I agree.

M K7001

I'm not sure what you mean but they do watch along format so you have your own copy to watch and sync up yourself.
