THE HUNGER GAMES: THE BALLAD OF SONGBIRDS & SNAKES FULL LENGTH MOVIE REACTION - Watch Along

Comments

Mister Lou

Awesome! I couldn't wait to see your reaction to this! Sorta like you I read the books, but only the trilogy and only after I already seen the movies a hundred times. and after reading the books, I watched the movies again but along with you two on here. but I also made the decision to watch this movie and THEN read the book for the same reasons. I like that we get to see the lake that Katniss and her dad went, where he taught her how to fish, hunt and pick out herbs that are edible. I only know that because of the books. an important detail for Catching Fire because that explains how she, besides Finnick, who grew up in a water district, knows how to swim. Also that weird little faceless baby creature that wiggled after Snow tapped on the glass looked like a baby version of those faceless mutts that killed Finnick. Even if this movie's absolute crap compared to the book, I still really enjoyed it of not for just the Easter eggs alone.

I so enjoyed watching this with y'all! I'm finishing the book now (on Part III) and love how they portrayed his character. In general, I think it causes us all to reason with our views of good/evil. It's found in the songs and in much of the dialogue that you both commented on. Dr. Gaul represents a view that endorsed being a predator rather than be hunted, Lucy Gray represented doing everything to stay on the right side of the line, believing in the good nature of people. I tend to think folks are motivated by survival. The difference is how he began to rationalize his decisions to survive when he wasn't in danger. The kid Bobbin in the arena was down, and he kept swinging, so there were little glimpses throughout where he kept crossing the line and it wasn't a survival need. From reading the book, it's clear he doesn't trust the capital either, so it seems he went more to Dr. Gaul's view that he would rather be the "victor" than prey. I'm honestly glad Lucy Gray's character got to get away as a mystery - there is no way he would have stayed in 12 so I don't think he really loved her, i think it was more obsession and convenience. I think he cared but his motivation to get back to capital at all costs never wavered. Regarding the snake bite, I don't think it was poisonous or certainly not why his mouth was bleeding. In Mockingjay, Finnick shares that Snow poisons people and would drink from their cups so they would not get suspicious - and that is why he bled, because the antidotes didn't always work. I think the arena in this game inspired the cornocopia in the future games - this is just my hunch and I don't know if it is ever described in the books. I'm writing alot but it was such a joy to watch again with y'all because y'all picked up on more themes than I did which is always fun!

Nowhere Man

I've read all of these books, and not only did I enjoy the source material, I thought all of the adaptions were exceptional. There're a few times where the book author wanders into sub-plots that don't contribute any meaningful exposition or backstory (so the movies cut all of that out), but all of the important bits are left in. There are a few little details that were changed (and many are critical of those changes), but I still feel as though the essence of each story is present in the movies. These are great stories and I love to rewatch the movies, every few years. During the golden age of movie serials, watching each of these movies on the big screen was thrilling, and this newer (prequel) movie was no exception. Your recent illness is a metaphor for the creeping “sickness” that is slowly killing this fictional world. Snow was born into a very wealthy and prominent family, but the rebellion took all of that away. What a surprise, to realize that Snow actually “participated” in the Hunger Games. He had the taste of it in his mouth, and blood on his hands. This is a complicated and messy story. Now you know why future games removed the fallen immediately, so the bodies don’t become fuel for the rebels. And now, Snow is standing RIGHT where Katniss will someday stand. Full circle. Full circle. Lucy Gray is a snake charmer, but isn’t Snow also a snake? Hmmm? Can’t you see him slithering through the grass, manipulating everything to his advantage? He has real heart, but it’s poisoned beyond repair. This is why Snow came out on top. He outplayed them all. But Snow is the Venca of Stranger Things. He was ALMOST redeemable, but then he decided “Eff it! I’m going to be evil.” The real question is: is Katniss the (great)granddaughter of Lucy? Hmmm. Even scarier still: did Snow impregnate Lucy? Yikes. One thing in the first 4 Hunger Games movies that was completely unusual (for movie villains) is that Snow and Katniss made a gentleman's agreement to never lie to each other. The most evil man in the entirety of Panem sees this nervous young girl from District 12 as his adversary (because of what happened in this movie/book), so he chooses to have an eerily civil (and almost warm and loving) relationship with her. They both try to kill each other, but they also play their own lofty game, far above the chaos below them.
