Owen's mother Evelyn died before recording the final verse of the community choir's memorial song. He knows the part because he listened outside rehearsals for twenty years, but the conductor says the tribute needs a woman's voice. Owen offers more than a voice. He arrives in Evelyn's green concert gown, a soft gray-brown wig, and the makeup she once taught him during a private, laughing afternoon neither mentioned again. The choir falls silent. His first note is a careful imitation, shaped to resurrect her. Halfway through, the memory becomes unbearable and his voice breaks into its own higher register, one he has hidden since adolescence.
