I love that you are experimenting with these now. I think the issue you are having with the bare mic stuff is the metallic sound, it might improve if you dampen the metal sound by firmly gripping the lower part of the grill and then scratching the top, Or inversely gripping the top and scratching the bottom of the metal grill. If that works, you could get some heavy duty small rubber bands to apply the dampening to the metal while you do your thing. In any case, rubber band on bare mic might be amazing, especially if you play with plucking them lightly while stretched, shoould make for some very interesting sounds!
