I'm so glad you guys watched this, the show itself in DUB is one of the first futuristic cyber shows I ever watched, and it was absolutely groundbreaking for me, I hope you guys watch it in the future. Keep having fun there guys. :)

Thanks for the reaction! I remember my parents watching this and the show when I was a kid but I didn’t understand it at the time. Now as an adult…I still don’t understand it but I’m glad I finally rewatched it!

Really happy you guys watched this. It's one of those foundational pieces of fiction that so many things were informed by. With regards to why 2501 wanted to merge with the major, it was saying that it was incomplete because although it was sentient, it could not reproduce like a human could. It could make copies of itself, but copies are weak because if there is a virus that can kill one copy they will all die. As powerful as it is, it is jealous of humanities ability to reproduce and make new versions of themselves with variance, which increases chances of survival. It's the same reason the major gave for recruiting a mostly human cop, because his differences from the rest of the force actually makes the force as a whole stronger and more resilient. So it wants to merge with the major, so that it can then use their two existences to breed unique copies of their ghosts to spread across the net. As a result though the major will essentially also become one of these new existences born from the unity of their two ghosts. It benefits by getting to sacrifice itself for it's "children" while she benefits by essentially evolving to become a higher state of existence. Earlier they talked about how humanity had evolved themselves by using cybernetics and computers to allow for the processing of vast amounts of information. That is the where the major was at prior to this union. After she can now literally observe and interact with that data that is present every where. The first sentence of the movie is "...electrons and light flow freely, and corporate computers networks eclipse the stars" which is basically describing how data and signals are present all around us. At the end right before they merge 2501 is referencing this when referring to it's powers and what she stands to gain. The feathers and imagery you start to see through it's eyes is symbolic of the higher power that it has access to and can see that others cannot. It's ironic that the visuals it shows are divine and evoke god when the being witness to it is a godless creation born from pure data.

ghost in the shell as a franchise started in 1989 with an original manga that ran until 1991! from there spawned multiple movies, tv anime series, OVA, remakes, and even the controversial live action movie (lol). definitely recommend that y’all listen to the first full opening theme from the stand alone complex anime series! inner universe by origa - it’s beyond iconic & probably the first thing most people will think of when anyone mentions ghost in the shell. super fun reaction & discussion, looking forward to future videos
