If you are a game developers, you might be familiar with the concept of procedural animations. This post introduces Gradient Descent, which is one of the most popular minimisation algorithms among many programmers. This variant is designed to be compatible with Inverse Kinematics. That is the technique that allows to move robotic arms, tentacles and humanoid characters in a realistic fashion, without the need for animations.
This tutorial is part of a longer series on Procedural Animations and Inverse Kinematics.
- Part 1. An Introduction to Procedural Animations
- Part 2. The Mathematics of Forward Kinematics
- Part 3. Implementing Forward Kinematics
- Part 4. An Introduction to Gradient Descent
The rest of this series is available for preview to $5+ Patrons.
- Part 5. Inverse Kinematics for Robotic Arms
- Part 6. Inverse Kinematics for Tentacles
- Part 7. Inverse Kinematics for Spider Legs
The full Unity project is available for download to $10+ Patrons. It includes the source code and 3D models for a robotic arm and a tentacle.
As always, thank you for your support. ♥
