π End of the Year Recap (Patreon)
Content
Hi everyone! π
It is safe to say that 2021 was ...an interesting year, to say the least! π
I just want to take this opportunity to do a recap of the content that I was able to work on publish, along with some hints into what I am working on!
Catenaries for Gamedev π
The year started with a series about one of my favourite mathematical objects: catenaries. I wanted to write about this for such a long time, and eventually did when I saw Tom Crawford's video on Numberphile!
Exoplanet Catalogue πͺ
Every year I work on a side project which somehow involves exoplanets. This year I made a new exoplanet catalogue. And to be fair, I cannot honestly wait to see what the James Webb Space Telescope will let us discover! π€©
Accessibility & Inclusivity βΏ
Minecraft βοΈ
During the first lockdown, back in 2020, I have spent pretty much three month confined in the flat. Playing Minecraft has been one of the few things to keep me sane. Perhaps because of that, I feel such a strong connection with the game. This is why I started creating some tutorials about it. Minecraft is, after all, one of the most played games in the world. And the possibility to attract a younger audience towards science and programming is definitely there!
The ones of you following me for a while know that I am also working on another Minecraft-related project... more on that later!
Interpolation π
If there is one technique every gamedev should know how to master is linear interpolation. It is so simple, yet so powerful, and you can build entire games using it! It is something I always teach in my classes, and I was glad I could do a nice write up about it this year!
Programming π₯οΈ
And let's not forget some random articles about programming!
- Delegate, Lambda Expression & Closures in C#
- Sunrise Sort: The Forgotten Sorting Algorithm
- The Secret Behind Valve's Flickering Lights
Twitter Threads π¦
To my surprise, I noticed that many of you were really happy to see shorter, snappier content on Twitter.
- Every version of Unity installed
- Visual Scripting IS coding: here's why...
- Five (+1) measures of distances every gamedev should know about
- Let's make games more accessible
- A list of narrative games to play this Christmas
That was *A LOT* of content, although it was just a small part of what I was hoping to publish! Earlier this year I got promoted to Director of PG Studies at the College where I work, and that has been taking quite a lot of my already non-existent free time. π€―
That being said, one of my highlights this year has been teaching Game AI Programming. One of the assignments is to create an AI for Tetris, and I have seen some super cool ones so far! I will probably make a video or an article about it, if you are interested!
This is also why I am honestly super excited to be spending this holiday working on a project that has been in development for waaay too long. A short documentary about the procedural generation of Minecraft! This is the most ambitious video I've made so far, and I had to write so much code to create some really cool custom segments!
But fear not, I am also planning a lot of tutorials. I have quite a few of them which are almost ready, but not ready enough that I am happy for them to be released as they are! I cannot wait for Term 2 to be over so that I can get back full-time on this!
Thank you as always for your support. It means a lot, and I hope that you have learnt as much from my tutorials as I did while making them! β€οΈ
