According to Q&A #277 by Tite Kubo on his fansite "Klub Outside", all Zanpakutō consist of two separate parts, the blade and the scabbard; Sayafushi and Zangetsu are the only two Zanpakutō without a scabbard. After it was reforged, Zangetsu, now being a dual-type Zanpakutō, was made up of "the blade" and "the scabbard," fixing it to its "correct form". The Bankai then fuses the two blades, giving Tensa Zangetsu the appearance of a single, sheathed blade.
