Highlights of EP 13 for me, 1) when Hinata gets hits in the face, no one bats an eyelid anymore 😂 Tanaka totally not caring, shouts to Noya : Cover! Cover! 2) Tanaka to Yamamoto: When you say Hi and she ignores you.. It's still good. Oh these desperate teenage boys 🤣 4) Introvert Kenma freaked out by Kageyama's intense competitive aura and scurried away from him. 5) Hinata finding a fellow kid-like 15 year old Inuoka. "Them jumping about" scene symbolizes their still child-like selves. Kuro commented on that too. 6) Seeing, Asahi scaring off the smaller 1st Year Nekoma, Yuki (the black straight hair) Daichi: Goatee over there is scaring that first year half to death. I'm not sure if anyone else has answered this yet but the show is called Haikyuu because that's the Japanese word for volleyball "排球". That word isn't really used anymore though as it's more commonly called Barēbōru "バレーボール" due to the western word becoming adopted as the norm. So just volleyball but using Japanese phonetics.

Kiyoko is a 3rd year student! I’m not sure how it was at your schools, but our football team usually had trainers that were girls. They hauled the game equipment, gave first aid to minor injuries, and handed out water to the players. That’s essentially what she is!

Haikyuu literally means Volleyball. It's how they used to call ''Volleyball'' in the past but now in modern times where english loan words are more adopted, they just call it ''bareiboru'' (Volleyball) So yeah, the show is literally called '' Volleyball!'' but using the outdated term.

To answer Jack "Haikyuu" is just the Japanese word for volleyball, not a very creative title lol Also so nobody gets themselves into trouble, the team manager Shimizu (the girl the boys all fawn over) is a third year student like Asahi, Daichi, and Sugawara. Their advisor Takeda (glasses guy, Levi's VA) is a teacher and around 11-12 years her senior, probably best to avoid shipping them lmao

Tournament time!!! Here's some background info that can help you guys (and other first time viewers) understand the story a little better and clear future confusion if any. - Japanese school year starts from April and ends in March of the following year. They don't have a long summer vacation but many breaks/ holidays. - There are 2 main tournaments during a school year: Inter-High tournament (usually happens in the Summer, this is where we are now) and Spring tournament. They are different from each other and they have their own nationals!! Below here is a bit spoilery: - The Spring tournament used to take place in March but this year in Haikyu, it is moved to January, giving the third-year an opportunity to play one more time before they graduate. - However, many third-year students in general still consider the Inter-High as their last tournament to participate in a club since they have college entrance exams coming. They will retire from the club and focus on their study ---> this is super important and you will see why as the show goes on. Hope this help a bit!!

All the drama behind the scenes from the actual matches, the bonding, the inner monologues, viewers turn into fans and become invested.

When a show grounds itself in reality, even being late to a match can seem relatively "dramatic" because of the stakes. A sudden slip or colliding with a teammate can seem "insane" in a match, its not something they would've watched since its just balls being tossed around but about characters and their motivations and interactions and journey. This can be applied like any other show with teen drama minus the deaths and world destruction but when you zoom back out its still just a sports anime. They could animate a show about swimming or even ants building the best colony for their queen and a rainstorm flooding can seem super dramatic and when an ant fights another colony for some twigs and leaves it can seem peak too, its all relative.

Nishinoya and Asahi are set as opposite characters. While Nishinoya is short, wild and defender, Asahi is tall, wimp and attacker. In addition, their names have the kanji meaning opposit to each other, such as “Sunset, West, Valley”for Yu Nishinoya and “Sunrise, East, Peak” for Asahi Azumane. It's cool two completely opposite people respect each other and work together on the same team☺️

I got a question for any actual Japanese watcher (if there are any here). Im reading that Haikyu is simply the ‘traditional’ japanese word for volleyball, but if thats the case, why is it written in katakana as opposed to hiragana? I thought katakana was only used for (english) loan words/non-japanese words. If its the actual japanese word, why is it not written はいきゅう? Hope someone can enlighten this 🥰 thank u in advance!

ukai is not hired by the school. for a high school volleyball club, the official coach has to be a teacher or employee of the school. thats why technically, Takeda-sensei is the official coach. Meaning, Ukai is coaching them voluntarily and not getting paid for it. insane if you ask me. especially considering he works at the store and the farm too

sorry I'll try to explain, usually katakana is used to spell words for emphasis, its a style in titling manga sometimes. I think theyre trying to emphasized this volleyball is the manga version/associate this katakana spelling to this manga/art vs actual volleyball or 排球 . it is also spelled with prolonged u in katakana ハイキュー to somehow adapt how its done in hiragana where it has uu ( or kyuu) はいきゅう.

Carter, I wish you'd watch some of Hiroshi Kamiya's (Levi's VA) more comedic roles and there are a lot mind you. The man is so versatile and a comedy genius, and can speak impressively super fast. Also in case you didn't notice, the Shiratorizawa's ace Ushijima Wakatoshi is often referred to as 'Ushiwaka' for obvious reasons (first 2 syllables of his surname and last name). Weirdly enough it's a nickname that is used by everyone without even knowing him personally as it was used in this episode for instance. i mean you've seen him , he looks like the type of person who uses full sentences and proper grammar in all his texts and tweets and should always be addressed to using his family name and rank and yet he's the one who gets a cute nickname.

"Carter, it. was. out." "Let me dream!" HELP This is every Karasuno fan tbh. Whenever there's a really strong team and they play each other at such high speeds, sometimes you can miss the details that are in the scene (like when a spike bounces off the opponent's hand and then lands out, which is a point for our team). I can relate so hard to being on the fence about celebrating immediately or keeping quiet until they announce whose point it was HAHAHA! Also, don't worry guys. Guardian Deity, or Nishinoya, has many moments that he shines in. He mentioned this before: in a tough rally or game, what the crowd goes crazy for isn't a super spike, but a super receive. P.S. Getting chills this early on in the show is such a good sign. Personally, I first experienced that during episode 9, when Asahi spiked past a three man block after working through his trauma of getting blocked continuously in a match. The soundtracks in Haikyuu contribute so much to the feels you get. It's impeccable.

Oikawa (blue shirt setter) is NOT a villain ☠️ Why would they put him on the same page as Sukuna and Light bruh? Bro's just a kid with a volleyball. 🤣 There are no villains in this show just antagonists. And that's one of the things I love about it. It's super realistic.

Yeah, they use katakana for multiple things. Sometimes just to make it "cooler". Kinda like when we use all caps (or break the rules in general) for a title or something for stylistic purposes. I've seen Youtubers/Vtubers call themselves using a japanese name but with katakana instead.

This show is about Karasuno. If he's not feeling for them that much then he's not into the show that much. Which is fine imo.
