Just a note on another translating error. The Pink haired Navy woman with smoker, every time she talks about herself, saying ‘i’ or ‘i’m’, shes actually saying ‘Hina’. So It can be inferred her name is Hina and that she likes to talk about herself in the 3rd person. Also random fact, apparently in Japan using your name to refer to yourself is a thing some young adult women do as a cute quirk, although a lot of the time it’s seen as cringey/immature, as it’s a thing kids would do but grow out of by the time they reach middle school. So maybe her having this quirk is meant to reinforce the perception of a cute/traditional pretty woman archetype, but maybe that’s a stretch.

Getting new bounties is always so hype haha. Especially because One Piece is so long, you really get a sense of the straw hats journey from nothing and no one to an infamous group of pirates. Even for you Geks think about it, you saw Luffy at the very start, when it was just him and zoro alone on their little ragtag boat. And now you've watched them episode by episode, rise to having a 100 million berry bounty and a 60 million berry bounty respectively. I remember one of you said that you really like when people call luffy 'strawhat' and I've always been the same way. It's a nice thought that we saw so many interactions at the start where literally no one knew luffy, and now his name and pirate crew has spread far enough in their verse that people can recognise him as 'strawhat' since he just keeps getting more and more infamous.

The first time I watched One Piece I never really thought about how nobody actually dies in this show, but every time they bring it up it seems like so obvious of a flaw. Especially when its things like Koza getting shot or other characters that we know aren't super durable like Luffy and Zoro that just tank death blows.

You won’t see crocodile locked in a cage but there’s a manga cover story series that happens over the period of the next saga, showing what happens to the baroque work members, including croc. That’s all I’ll say in case you guys want to check it out one day. The anime never animated it though but its main story canon.

The Kanji on Smoker’s back is indeed 正義(Justice). Fun fact: The kanji on Mr.2's back is 盆暮れ, it means the end of the year, like the new year's eve, as it is, but it is pronounced as "BON-KU-RE" so it is a word play of his name. We do these Kanji word play all the time, and we can use any kanji that have the same sound but I think Mr.2 chose this specific Kanji because it has this kind of sense of vagueness, you know, the end of the year. He is very "vague" guy as you already know. The good example would be 夜露死苦(YO-RO-SI-KU). I don't know how to translate YOROSIKU to English but I'm sure you've have heard the word before. YOROSHIKU should be written in HIRAGANA as よろしく we use 夜露死苦(夜=night, 露=Russia, 死=death, 苦=suffering) because this is the type of word play that teenagers often use and we all know the teenager syndrome, right?

i think the emphasis on will power in the series plays a role in why our mcs in particular are so tough too. OP is a series in which having a strong desire/will to do something is the most important thing in achieving it so characters (like the straw hats) that are highly motivated are extra durable because they have the will to go on

Personally I've never really liked the fights in One Piece (except Luffy's probably) until pretty recently and it's never stopped it from being a favorite show of mine. Imo One Piece's strengths are in the worldbuilding, humor, characters and emotional moments

Sure. That’s doesn’t necessarily mean it’s Oda’s best thing. There’s plenty of chapters and overall arcs showing the strength of Oda’s character writing and use of themes. I think that’s his strongest suit, I said world building is second as in second best thing, by no means does that statement have a negative connotation.

I think not many people dying is fine. People are way too obsessed with death and killing these days. Oda puts a lot of thought into his named characters trying to make them as individualist as possible and killing many of them off would be a waste, so I understand and like his hesitancy in not doing so. Though Fake out deaths is an Oda flaw, I will say.

The canons are good enough, we don't need more stretch. Most 'fillers' were designed via Oda's cover story writing. The Dialogue may be written by showrunners but the plot is still usually written by Oda(granted this only goes for cover story fillers).

Carter is exactly right about the stakes being diminished by the constant “no death” aspect. It is without a doubt Oda’s biggest flaw as a writer, and he stubbornly sticks to it. I wouldn’t even have a problem with it if he didn’t also try to milk the feelings that come with characters dying. You can have your cake or you can eat it, Oda, stop trying to do both. Just one of those annoyances that you gotta grudgingly accept to enjoy all the other goodness of the series.

@big brother 2. That’s a completely not true lol. None of the fillers are based on cover stories. The cover stories are canon to the story so they can’t be filler. There’s only been 2 times when cover stories have gotten dedicated epsiodes and that was for buggy and Koby/helmeppo both of which happened before episode 70. All filler eps are what they are, filler. Non canon stuff not written by oda.

But what I'm saying is Luffy and Zoro are durable and it makes no sense when characters like Koza who shouldnt have that level of plot armor just tank stuff. Keeping Koza alive changed nothing really, the outcome would have probably stayed the same if he had died.

While there are many episodes I absolutely love, I’m not sure I’d agree with there being better episodes before, but “after” is a debate I welcome. Personally, the culmination of everything having happened in that arc and in Luffy’s life being portrayed the way was also what made it my favorite One Piece episode. The emotional impact and cinematography was just breathtaking. Another episode that made me feel that way was the One Piece fan letter.

I watched One Piece for 10+ hours a day at times. I was in Thailand during a scorching summer, and I was sick, so staying inside wasn’t too difficult. But the main reason I binged it was to catch up before GF. Everyone online, and especially my husband, was so hyped about it😅 I finished just one day before GF dropped, so I got to experience it with the whole world. No regrets :) I also caught up with AoT in just a week, about a month before the final episode. And the only reason I even watched it was because of One Piece. Since then, I’ve seen 40+ anime, all because OP showed me how amazing anime can be and that Naruto isn’t the only great one out there. Still, nothing has topped OP for me yet haha

@Marcus btw I watched recaps, fillers, and openings, so it was definitely more than 6 hours per day. I know it sounds crazy, but at the time, it didn’t feel like too much. There was a lot going on in my life, and it never felt like I was wasting time. And whatever time was left? I spent it playing The Witcher 3 💀

People are forgetting One Piece was created to be a very long running show marketed towards kids and young teenagers with impressionable minds in Japan. Seeing all the death is not the point of the show or is it good image to promote to kids, its about enduring and overcoming insane odds so they can also tackle the real world in the same way as Japanese society is very repressive and rigid. As the viewers grew older, so did the characters and stories in One Piece which can now involve deaths to make the emotional impacts since most of the viewers are emotionally ready. There's a mix of financial longevity and Oda's push for progressive movements without as much death as possible. Even in Pokemon theres rarely deaths.

Tbf not exactly. Although Jump manga usually refer to Shonen, it’s also popular among adults. Like AOT, Death Notes are also published on Shonen Magazine. Even before One Piece in the 80’s, there were brutal bloody mangas like ‘Fist of the North Star’ which was also categorized as Shonen. In terms of targeting at kids, there are manga magazines specifically for kids such as ‘Shogakukan’ on which Pokemon was originally published. I think it’s more like Oda’s personal style as he explained in SBS.

As i already mentioned Oda doesnt want people dying much unless it serves as a significant arc in a characters life and their impact in the story. Oda has mentioned he wants to keep the party throughout the show's journey and time slots that One Piece is aired in affects how they handle violence and death and also focusing on kids and young adults, maybe if your watching One Piece as a full grown adult its about the nostalgia and escapism to go to a time where death wasnt so significant but the show wanted to be popular with people and that was kids and young adults at the time it debuted. Oda in a way never wanted to "grow up" and face the real world issues in japanese society but push progressivism and trans rights in his story.

I honestly don’t think they should do one pace until post time skip. Pre time skip one pace barely takes out anything so all you get is the occasional jarring cut edit and save like 1 minute of time per ep. Just keep in mind that a lot of people saying to use one pace now jsut want you guys to watch more content faster. During most of the pre time skip, if the pacing is slow it’s because of the manga not the anime adaption.
