I will say season two will flesh out the characters a lot more. You'll see more of the servants' personalities and their goals, especially with Archer. You're doing great by picking up on the subtle/not so subtle hints for sure!

In episode 10 idk if you notice but Kuzuki had his fists fortified by Caster. In the episode Shirou notices it and says "His fists have been fortified with magic?". We can also see the purple spell on his hands. Yes, saber is not in full fighting form and yes she was taken by suprise. We also see one of Sabers class ability Magic Resistance when she is protected against casters attack while she rushes towards kuzuki, (her other class skill is the riding skill, we se it in action in fate/zero). they mentioned it in episode 7 but the three knight classes has some degree of magic resistance the rank of it varies for each hero, this sabers magic resistance is ranked A class so any magic ranked A or below that don't work. So each class get class abilities and also depending on their personal stories can get different personal skills not dependant on their class. you probably don't remember but in fate/zero it was said that Archer class had the ability of independant action, to act without a master, the lenght depends on the rank of it.

Hype, excited for next week! Was looking forward to seeing you guys react to the Kuzuki fight, pretty surreal to see a Master able to legitimately fight on equal ground with a Servant. On a related note, when Kuzuki says he’s not a mage he means it literally here. Last comment on the Zero vs. stay night - which should go first? debate because I think I’ve talked about it enough already, but just writing this because the Geks have been making little comments about how good it is that they watched Zero before, like Carter in this one about Gilgamesh and Jack in other ones. Which is not a bad thing, but then I think it’s not really fair to expect big payoffs from UBW at the same time. Of course there are, but stuff that would’ve been payoffs turn into nothingburgers. Like imagine if you knew about Kuzuki and his abilities from Zero, there’s no way you guys would’ve gotten so hyped/surprised with this last ep, right? A part of why the original stay night experience was so good was because we entered into it without knowing about Kirei, about Gil, about Rin and Sakura. Zero is more highly touted than the stay night anime adaptations, and for good reason imo; while being visual spectacles, the stay night anime don’t do a great job handling its characters. So definitely understand Carter’s struggle to pick a great character lol.

The first time I watched this I was kinda surprised at how Kuzuki was easily beating Saber but I think it was definitely a mix of Shirou not being to bring out Saber's full potential along with Kuzuki having great martial arts skills while being buffed with caster that has been draining mana from the citizens of the city. Also caster made her base ryuudo temple which in fate zero we learned is one of the major leylines in the area so she likely gets lots of passive mana from that as well. I think it's a great way to show that a servant can be powerful af but only use their full potential when paired with a great master as well.

To be fair it is such a throwable line from one the visual novels. Shinji is extremely misogynistic so he doesn't elaborate on it much. I think it is one of the scenes where he is in the worm pit thinking about his next moved.

the reason some characters like rider was not really given much screentime or lore in ubw is because this is one timeline of three in the visual novel. all the routes have different focal characters and fights. so the fate, ubw and hf routes are needed to explore the characters completely. that being said , i hope u guys will react to the heavens feel movies right after ubw, because some of your questions regarding lore and fate zero are answered

I know this is old but I agree with most of this. I watched UBW first and I definitely feel like it was the best way to do it. As you mentioned, watching Zero first makes plenty of reveals and references in UBW become huge nothing burgers whereas that doesn't happen when going into Zero with the knowledge of UBW. By watching Zero second, almost every reveal or even just hype moments of "that's how this character became like this" are elevated by having the knowledge of UBW AND you also get more specifics lore wise to add on to your base knowledge. It's kinda like if you watched the Star Wars prequels first and when they finally reveal Darth Vader is Lukes father in the originals you're just like yeah, I know? Why is it built up like a reveal? I know the Geks keep saying "We wouldn't even know who this is if we watched this first" but I feel like that's actually a large factor contributing to what seems to be them enjoying this less. You basically have 90% of the information already so nothing is new or surprising. I also think UBW explains the premise way more simply instead of the huge confusing lore dump in episode 1 of Zero which is a lot more digestible for first time viewers of Fate.
