Had to get juicy on 2nd account so I don’t lose legacy on my main :(

zak

9am in the uk rn Sunday 🤣I just woke up W drop appreciate all the work you guys do

kuza

i notice every fate drop/episode start carter is out of frame 😭😭

zoldaic

so much plot is plotting...

Kinx

Damn, you guys were so close…

zoldaic

Remember kuzuki was buffed by Caster, he was not more. There are answers to why Shirou can't provide mana properly to Saber. If you just observe from Fate zero summoning that is. Also the source material from this is from a novel so many things is skimped over and only things that mattered is shown.

Jude

Just a quick explanation. Kuzuki was beating saber before because he was being buffed by caster. Shirou notes in their first fight his fists were imbued magic despite not being a mage so that's why he was giving saber hands. Without support from caster he's a skilled fighter but can't stand up to servants like he did prior. Also Cannon is actually very correct by saying the show branches in the post discussion. You guys already know this but Fate was originally an erotic visual novel where your choices decide how the story plays out and is divided into three main routes. Unlimited Blade Works was one path the story could take and you guys could already tell this route focuses a lot on the relationship between Shirou and Rin. So yeah just thought I'd explain why the story is mainly the dynamic between those two and why you guys might feel like there's less focus about the grail war itself.

kuza

GAE BOLG RHO AIAS

It's me

I remembered that archer was commanded by rin to not attack shirou so thats prob why he wanted to break it off

kuza

so hard

kuza

next batch gonna go so crazy 😭😭

kuza

UNLIMITED BLADE WORKS

kuza

this has gotta be one of the greatest shows to rewatch 😭

kuza

cannons complaints are definitely interesting... 😭

kuza

like just watched such a good batch and switched instantly and the complaints are just as if hes misunderstanding the show im sorry 😭

kuza

it feels as if you guys are giving a consesus on the whole show as if youve seen and know everything 💀😭

kuza

carter constantly comparing ubw to fate zero i think is just hurting your watch more, like this is a different show man 😭

.Koen

There are a lot of hints as to Archer’s identity throughout the whole season (especially in these last episodes) and I think if you were to go through it again you might pick up on it more. But I have the benefit of hindsight so I don’t blame you for not being fully there yet. Also keep in mind there are still quite some episodes left so. And indeed, UBW has a different tone and focus than zero so I don’t think it’s weird if you prefer one over the other.

DontFailArtSchoolEren

Ufotable did try to make the fights cool while navigating a more intimate storyline for UBW.

Oscar Medina

Honestly in the last 4 episodes it has been too on the nose. To be fair the Fate route is the one is very subtle about it. UBW has to be more open about Archer so it cannot be subtle.

Oscar Medina

Also, about Shinji. He probably doesn't have Command Spells. I don't think Shinji meets the minimum amount of magic circuits to anchor a servant.

Izaya

Believe it or not Fate is originally a romance visual novel, not a battle shonen as the anime seem

zak

i cant wait a whole week for the next batch its actually wild

Kalizarin

I can deffos see where the reservations about the show are coming from - if it helps any, I think an important thing to consider with both Fates is that Zero revolves around what is basically an ensemble cast of (mostly) adult Masters going into smth with a purpose whereas UBW is focused on Shirou and Rin who are both teens still finding their way in the world, the dynamic they have with the Grail War is gonna be different and the show is gonna reflect that

zoldaic

also i wonder if this was mentioned before but the writer for Fate/Zero and F/SN are not the same. Fate/zero writing was approved by the creator of f/sn but that's saying nothing because he approved many, many things. Bad and good. You might notice how different Saber is in this show than zero(speculation but Gen Urobotchi doesn't like saber hence why Saber gets bullied in Zero). And Nasu(F/SN) really, really loves Saber(Type/Moon fans would understand what i meant by this)

Den Wolf

I feel like Medea's nuances went over all of their heads.

Umineko peak fiction

The gang is def gonna fuck with heavens feel way heavier then UBW no doubt due to the vibes also the teacher got no diffed cause he didnt have caster buffing him with magic/ physical enhancement magic unlike his fight with saber

Kalizarin

from my understanding, Shirou got better at projecting his weapons cos he studied how Archer did it/pushed it to his limits under life-threatening circumstances and his mana capacity never actually improved so it didn't have any effect on Saber's ability

py

shouldnt be able to judge the whole show until you can tell us Archer's name in confidence imo

Beeg

ngl I'm a little disappointed they missed it. Not catching on before the last ep is normal but they caught on to all the previous hints and Rin basically tells us in the face in the last ep. I think watching so many shows at once is hurting their experience with shows tbh, they're forgetting details and things characters said (e.g. Jack forgot Archer figured out who lancer was pretty early on as well)

Carter D. Andrus

Bruh I’ve said like every time I’ve compared the two that they are just different kinds of stories 😂😂

Carter D. Andrus

I love how 10 people like the comment with no questions 😂😂😂

Carter D. Andrus

I agree but the nature of our channel is giving our thoughts as the show/story is revealed in these kinds of increments. I keep my opinions open to be changed until the very end

JevCor

Ain't no way bro changed his name just for this reaction. lmao

JevCor

More comments than likes, oh lawd. Just like ya'll say don't judge the story til its done, let them finish it before ya'll flip out. Fate Zero imo is the best series, but UBW is pretty fun.

Herber

Let’s get it

Zess

@JevCor what does his name have anything to do with this reaction? lol

py

yea youre right my bad worded it poorly maybe its more correct to say dont let your conclusions be final until..

Zess

So so close lol

Zess

I think yalls feelings are justified, especially having zero as your first fate experience. Yall dont realize how good yall have it that you didn't have the original fate/stay night from the early 2000's as your comparison lol that one was a mess and filled with so much cringe. But all I can say is the next batch of episodes will probably alleviate a lot of your confusion and annoyances. There were some MASSIVE hints in this batch, but I can only say that in hindsight lol It's already been said before of course, but the romance part of this show is actually the original and main point of Fate. The Grail war is just the background. I would also push back on Cannons point a little bit on the grail war being the important and best part of fate, the "structure" he misses. Even in Zero, which felt more like an accurate grail war as yall mentioned. It's best moments wasnt the fight for the ultimate wish, but the battle of ideals between master and servants. The debate of Kings on what a true king is, the motivation behind Kiritsugu with his past, Waver learning to become an actualized man from his servant that taught him how to live with confidence and without regret, the tragedy of the neglected heir to the Matous who just wanted to save his family but was ultimately shunned by them and failed, the other tragedy of Lancer who just wanted to redeem himself as a knight but the twisted world that shows no care about honor making it impossible for him, the interaction between Kirei and Gilgamesh with his twisted awakening of human desire. The grail war made all this possible and was the backbone of the world/lore, but ultimately all of its best moments had nothing to do with the grail war itself. You will see what I mean by the battle of ideals being what makes this story incredible, as my favorite one in all of fate is coming up soon. Just my two cents of course, I enjoy y'alls critiques even if I happen to disagree with some of them at times. We're entering the peak of the season!

Zess

Also, IM PUMPED FOR THIS NEXT BATCH WERE ENTERING PEAK

AK

On the rewatch it feels weird they haven’t picked it up by now. But the first time I watched it, I think it took me to the next episode so I will give a lot of grace! This is definitely a show that needs to be kinda binged (which I did originally). It would be odd to have originally seen it in batches. Still love the real reactions and looking forward to the next drop!

Huxley Bennett

I had it spoiled for me, so it always felt obvious to me when I saw it, but I think every time I've watched it with someone or seen a reaction the other person/people don't pick up on it until either this last episode or next episode. It's kinda funny how obvious it feels when you know, yet no-one seems to pick up on it the first watch.

Huxley Bennett

Archer also helped him a lot when his left side was messed up after the first projection

ShinyHaxorus

As someone who was also disappointed by this in UBW, I think a big part of the grail war feeling like it's "in the background" is because a lot of the intrigue/mystery surrounding it goes away once you watch the ending of Fate/Zero. IMO it's best to just view UBW as its own thing. Narratively it doesn't really flow that well from Zero, Zero starts plotlines that don't get concluded in UBW (because as another commenter mentioned, UBW is just one of many branching routes. the lore/worldbuilding goes way beyond what only gets shown in UBW), while spoiling other plotlines.

Isabel

I feel like they're going to be confused with a lot of what goes on in Heaven's Feel just because it's sooo different from the UBW route.

Isabel

To be fair I feel like she was villainized in the majority of the show so it's hard to pick up on any nuance or redeemable qualities she may have had from a few brief dialogue interactions or scenes at this point. The audience is more likely to have made up their mind about her by now. I do think that a fault of season 2, they seem to dump a lot more lore about the servants now instead of sprinkling them in consistently through the whole show which makes their deaths feel really sudden, like we just go to know them as heroics spirits only for them to drop from the show.

Huxley Bennett

Just to answer some of the questions at the end, and give some more non-spoiler explanations. Bit of a long one. Kuzuki lost so bad cause he's just a regular dude who's well trained. He beat Saber when massively buffed by Caster and taking her by surprise, but by himself he never stood a chance against a servant. Archer fought Lancer and drained a lot of Caster's mana since he was drawing it as her servant, then used it to heal. This meant he could sneak up on Caster and Kuzuki since Caster didn't have the reserves to spy on him, nor could she use her OP magecraft. Probably worth explaining a bit about heroic spirits/guardians. Heroic spirits are a collective term for powerful spirits which can be summoned through various means. The holy grail war is just one of these means. Archer is a guardian, which means he made a contract with the collective will of humanity to survive (not worth going into rn), and is summoned at various times throughout history in order to prevent humanity from going extinct. The point in time when he made this contract is irrelevant to the times in history he can be summoned. Like with the grail, guardians can be summoned to times before they existed. All guardians are heroic spirits, not all heroic spirits are guardians. Shirou has seemingly grown so much so quickly, because his issue originally was less about total mana and more about an inability to utilise that mana. Watching Archer and having real combat experience is helping him learn his 'trace on' skills a lot, and after he first projected, Archer helped him a ton with the activation of his mana circuits. However, sharing mana through the master/servant contract is something that Shirou never had any training whatsoever for, so despite growing with his one trick that doesn't mean he's automatically able to support Saber more. There's also a few things that do seem out of place in the story, but that's because in the original VN they're just not really part of this route. You can pick those storylines in another route, but they're mutually exclusive to the UBW route. Appreciate the honesty from you guys, especially Cannon, I mean that's why we're here after all. Still, it is funny to me to hear the way you talk about certain things being bad writing and indicative of an author who was mostly winging it while writing, when most of those things are actually indicative of the opposite. I agree with preferring the overall tone of Zero, but UBW is so good at weaving threads throughout the story, that you don't realise until the end or a rewatch. Similar (though not at all the same scale) to AOT.

MADHOUSE

Rewatching UBW gives me a bit of AoT vibes where I catch small details I missed on my first watch. I do agree UBW is weaker in story compared to FZ probably because of when it was written and who the target audience of the original story was for, but imo, UBW (Ufotable) has the better balance of story, action, and fun characters over FZ. Again, UBW is based off of Fate Stay Night, an adult visual novel and it follows many shounen-esque storytelling formulas. This makes it come off as a much simpler story compared to FZ. Whereas, FZ was written by Urobuchi who is known for his dark-themed writing that have characters with interesting philosophies (Urobuchi also has a nickname, Urobutcher. Self-explanatory based on his stories lol). That said, I think Ufotable did a very good job making an early 2000's VN story more interesting by fleshing out a lot of the characters and giving us eye candy fights. Maybe I just have monkey brain and enjoy two strong fighters go at it 🐵 Regardless, I think it's fine to like one story over the other. Both are great for different reasons, and hey, maybe Carter will change his mind by the end of the season 👀 Next week up to the end of the season + Heaven's Feel will be peak all throughout. I guarantee the boys will have a good time 😁

Synyster

sad to see the comparisons, but i understand it. This show's is the original canon, before Fate/Zero existed. It really is best to watch knowing the backstory from Zero, but without comparing, because like Carter said they are just two different types of stories being told.

Isabel

I do think in hindsight it's actually pretty obvious, but when watching it for the first time that plot point feels really drawn out to the point that you begin to question if that really is the twist. I had it spoiled to me as well, so I'm not sure how quick I would've caught it lol

Isabel

I feel like UBW won't be everyone's cup of tea solely due to the difference in genre compared to Zero, which they have mentioned they prefer due to its more gritty and philosophic style. I think they'll enjoy the fruit of the show which we'll see on next week's batches and the finale :))

McKay Carter

I found myself lost a lot in Zero early on and always very intrigued in UBW, mainly because of what Zero taught me, still think Zero could be better for me after finishing UBW but for now this takes the cake

AK

I know right! It’s definitely one of those things that once you know you can’t unknow. I hadn’t thought about this show in years until they reacted to it but it’s the first thing I remembered 😂.

kuza

the rewatch for both of these shows hit so hard, i found myself liking both shows even MORE than i already did so in the future a rewatch would do good for sure if u got time

Choua

the next episode or two explains basically everything you've been confused about and found inconsistent with Archer. I hope everything makes sense by the end of it for you guys.

Becca

Just binged your guys' reaction to this show. I can't wait to see what you all think of the finale. UBW's philosophical, it just shows more than it tells. Zero is more telling, I think (all those monologues and debates!). UBW tells, too, but for a majority of its runtime, it shows us its point and asks us to think about it ourselves. Like how Shirou gets that eerie wide-eyed look on his face, or always physically ignores his pain to the point of worsening his injury. Or Rin struggles with not being in control, or hides when she's being truly seen. Or how Archer is A SPOILER. The show's about generational trauma and how or even whether you can overcome it. Zero's also much more of an ensemble piece, whereas UBW is mostly a character study on Shirou, and whether he'll ever leave the genocide he survived or forever be stuck in that fire.

lololol

As someone who has watched UBW years ago but didnt really fully invest my attention to it... I will say the writing is EXTREMELY GOOD. It may seem confusing for you geks right now, but this rewatch for me made me realize how good UBW's writing is. There are SOOO many details/hints that foreshadow the plotline and all of those details connect soooo well together from a re-watcher's POV. So don't worry, everything will become clear!! But from a rewatcher's POV the writing isn't "confusing" or complicated... it's just that you guys are missing the last few pieces to connect them all together 🤣 Edit: Apparently the geks finished UBW and im excited to see what they think

Animeke

Trust the process, the show knows what it's doing.

Animeke

Rin wanted to enter the Holy Grail War initially to achieve her father's/family's goal of obtaining The Root, but she emphasized to Archer in one of the earlier episodes that she didn't have a wish and simply wanted to win the Holy Grail War to prove herself as a mage - but her motives have obviously evolved since being with Shirou.

Animeke

They haven't finished it yet. This is the most recent batch they've seen and they're only watching 3 episodes a week.

Sheru

Idk who said to me like a couple episodes back that I'll love part 2 way more. Hi, you are right. This shit goes hard asfk

Isabel

yessss ^^

This is Daniel

So funny watching the deliberation at the end. This series is definitely more of a character study within the holy grail war. Mainly, that it is ultimately a senseless war. Also, knowing this show was produced before Fate Zero, adds an air of mystery to the grail that the in-universe characters (and audience) shouldn't know at this stage.

ThatJakeChap

It's so funny how close you guys keep coming to Archers identity, you even said it at one point, and then somehow forgot haha. The last episode of this batch almost states it outright. EDIT: I know people have said it before but after listening to the discussion at the end about the motivations being weird, I need to reemphasise the problem with the show is its place in the larger fate series. You are supposed to have assumed knowledge of certain heroic spirits motivations from either myth or other Fate works even though you have no reason to possess that knowledge. Caster is a perfect example of this. Her comments at the end seem random without prior knowledge. I'm not including Archer in this because everything he has done makes perfect sense when you figure his identity out. I think it's assumed the watcher has figured out his identity by this point in the anime.

ThatJakeChap

Unbelievably good way of explaining it

ThatJakeChap

Very good comment. I also agree that I love seeing their opinions but I'd be lying if I said it didn't bug me a little to call something bad writing when some of the concerns are details they simply missed and some are details not yet explained. I really wish they would trust the process on this one. I can understand having these opinions but just saying the writing is bad rather than considering you might be missing something seems a little silly to me. Obviously I am in agreement Zero and UBW are very different in tone and delivery. I probably also like Zero more as a whole. Someone else mentioned this show very much adopts "show don't tell" whereas Fate Zero felt almost the opposite in that they explain things constantly through dialogue exchange or lore dump. Unfortunately, at this point in the reaction (I'm only just watching it now), it seems a few things are being dismissed as bad writing even though it has been pretty clearly shown. Once again, I know some clarity is still to come but plenty has been shown already.
