My theory of how Archer survived: 1.) Archer survived the attack from Gilgamesh, probably by healing magic and/or secretly absorbing the mana from some of the civilians of the city (like a little rat). Archer stopped caring about people while being a guardian, and he said Caster was smart for draining the citizens out of their mana. Also, Archer knows how to steal mana, since he is a mage himself. 2.) Archer said that he can’t last longer than 2 days without a master. The 2 days started right when Caster died, since she was his master. So she died right before sunrise, 30 min before sunrise at most. Archer takes Rin, then Shirou goes home to rest for the the whole day. Later on, Shirou wakes up before midnight, and they head to the castle before sunrise. After that, Shirou and Archer start their fight in the morning (That’s 1 day). Archer then vanishes after getting stabbed by Gilgamesh, Shirou and the rest go home to recover, and then they head to Gilgamesh (around midnight), for the final fight. The fight then lasts all night, till sunrise (That’s 2 days). And so finally, while the sun is coming up, Archer dies after he says his goodbyes to Rin.

Oscar Medina

So it is not really explained in anime, but basically, Archer never died. That's literally it. Feel free to theorize how it happened since that explanation is only canon to the visual novel.

Jude

Jack was right the long brown haired dude Shirou talked to was Waver. He's now Lord El Melloi II the same title Archibald had (fate zero's lancer's master). I hope you guys consider watching the three heaven's feel movies. Fate UBW is amazing but it does just show you one route the story takes. If you still want to watch more fate there's also Fate/strange Fake Whispers of Dawn which is like a longer ep for the new Fate soon (hopefully) to be released. There's also Fate Grand Order which also has some sick characters but it's not as mainstream as the other fate's.

Kiyoh

rin and shirou are my favorite characters, but to answer your question(s) at the end — saber’s popularity is based on a lot of different things. fate/stay night is originally a visual novel (choices affect the outcome type of story) that has 3 main routes: 1) Fate route (focusing on Saber) 2) UBW route (focusing on Rin) 3) Heaven’s Feel route ufotable actually never adapted the original fate route, presumably because it was already adapted by studio deen in 2006. it wasn’t the best adaptation though so it sort of gets forgotten. but since they adapted the fate route, saber got much more of a focus in it. it’s a pretty lengthy VN, and while the ufotable adaptations do a good job of touching on the important stuff, a lot of character dialogue/interactions is lost for sure. if I remember correctly, there is actually a “sequel” VN to UBW (technically it’s an indirect sequel to all 3 routes but there are a lot of UBW based implications) called Fate/Hollow Ataraxia, whereas in the anime the 2x13 epilogue is anime original content. you could certainly argue the ending scene with shirou walking in the desert smiling indicates he is naively walking down the same path as archer, but I actually always personally interpreted it as the changes rin have made for him have led him down a more positive, (slightly) less self-sacrificial path. anyway, I appreciated your guys’ thoughts throughout the show and I’m glad you all enjoyed the show in your own ways. looking forward to whatever comes next (and yeah that guy was waver)

Jude

Since Jack asked for a list of the fate stuff: One of the other routes of Fate is Heaven's Feel with three movies: Fate/stay night: Heaven's Feel I. presage flower Fate/stay night: Heaven's Feel II. lost butterfly Fate/stay night: Heaven's Feel III. spring song There's a new fate called Fate Strange Fake. The pilot already released and the rest of it should be releasing soon (hopefully) Fate/Strange Fake: Whispers of Dawn - this one is like an extended pilot the same as what fate zero and ubw had Then there are the shows and movies that are less popular and mainstream. There's Fate Grand Order which is heavily related to the game with the same name Fate/Grand Order: First Order (2016 OVA) – intro to the FGO timeline. Fate/Grand Order: Camelot (2 movies, 2021–2022) Fate/Grand Order: Babylonia (2019–2020 TV) Fate/Grand Order: Solomon (2021 movie) Then there's the other even more obscure ones like: Fate/Apocrypha (2017) (this one was pretty controversial) Fate/kaleid liner Prisma☆Illya (2013–2021, 4 seasons + movies) - this one is like a magical girl anime Lord El-Melloi II’s Case Files (2019) - More about Waver Velvet's story after Fate Zero. There's a lot of fate stuff but I recommend to watch the three heaven's feel movies at the very least. Fate Strange Fake Whispers of Dawn was also a fun watch but it's taking a while for the rest of the show to be released. The concept for Fate Apocrypha is really interesting and has some of -in my opinion- the coolest servants but the execution of the anime wasn't the greatest. As for the Fate Grand Order one's I have yet to watch them myself but from clips I've seen they look pretty amazing animation wise and have great sound design.

If I remember correctly the author had to clarify two things: 1) Archer comes from a timeline that's a bit different from all three routes, I think we can assume UBW shirou's experience was the closest to archer but still not quite the same. 2) Archer used the dematerialization thing that servants do to fake his death at the castle

Synyster

IM SOO EXCITED FOR THE MOVIES! They are straight fire!!

MADHOUSE

I always enjoy a good epilogue episode/moment after the story is over. Makes the experience feel complete. I knew Archer surviving was going to leave you guys feeling a bit perplexed, but as Carter explained, its a show with crazy amounts of lore (even I know only the surface-level). Idk if the VN ever explains it, but it's a fact that we never see his dead body. Only a piece of clothing that fades after Gil's attack. Shows he could have survived... somehow lol. But hey, him surviving did get us closure with him and Rin, so I'm not complaining. YES, that man in the school was Waver grown up. The dialogue was kind of simple between him and Shirou probably because their meeting was a bit of fan service for us fans, I think. Also, if you know his voice actor (same as Hisoka's), it's a complete giveaway as soon as he speaks. Kind of cool to see him all mature and dignified now, though. Regarding the three HF movies: Heaven's Feel is another route that starts from UBW. I won't say which moment it splits exactly, but after the early events in UBW, the route changes into Heaven's Feel route. Again, this is originally a VN, a game with many different canon endings. HF is just one of the many endings. "Route" basically meaning "what if the story went this way". Also, all of you guys have been asking where Sakura's involvement is in UBW. All I'll say is you'll get all the "senpai"s you've missed in this route in the HF movies 😂 Get the senpai counter ready

DontFailArtSchoolEren

They scrapped the exact credit scene that the author wanted which was Shirou walking through that desert and sees the footprints stop (archers journey) and Shirou continues walking forward. Archer also was never killed he just appeared dead while he de-materialized and survived for as long as possible (2 days) to make sure rin and shirou succeeded. Gilgamesh lost due to his arrogance, he didnt want to go all out on a faker, in the end he hesitated to pull out his pride and joy, EA and by then it was too late and Shirou made him take a step back which Gilgamesh finds disgraceful so he admits Shirou in that moment is acknowledge as powerful (even though he could've used the chains like he did on berserker). Cocky villains always lose due to their ego, its a normal thing in Anime and one of the only ways the MC ever wins with the power of love and friendship etc. Sabers arc was just accepting her fate that the Grail cant save her or her countries outcome, she did what she thought was right and aftering seeing shirou vs archer, she accepts her efforts instead of regretting them. Heavens feel trilogy is the 3rd route of Fate story and made them the most money before demon slayer/movies. Fate/Apocrypha is a pretty standard but still entertaining battle royale from another studio called A-1 Pictures that did Solo Leveling, 86, Sword Art Online (all), Persona Series, Kaguya-sama Love is War and the upcoming Fate/Strange series. Fate/Grand Order is like the biggest branch from the original story with game adaptation and multiple movies and starts in Gilgamesh's kingdom and becomes like X-Men Days Of Future Past and turns into Marvel Avengers with Thanos and crazy multiverse threats. Fate universe becomes....very very sci fi...like the Matrix, X-Men and Marvel Multiverse combined.

Kalizarin

About Cannon questioning how Shirou > Gilgamesh > other Heroic Spirits != Shirou > other Heroic Spirits, the way I see it is: Gilgamesh beats other Servants cos of his overwhelming firepower rather than a skill diff, he mostly uses the weapons in his armory like ammo instead of the swords/spears/etc that they are. There's some things about this that are good to keep in mind too like how each one of his weapons are basically a Noble Phantasm in their own right and that Heroic Spirits, Noble Phantasms and whatnot have stats (which is mentioned a few times iirc but it's not really expanded on much and I wish they explored that more) so Gilgamesh can technically pick weapons with the best stats for whatever matchup he's in with Shirou, he's not really got that same level of firepower - instead of overwhelming firepower, it's probs more like barely equal firepower lmao so up against Gilgamesh, he basically has to do just enough to match the weapons so he can get in close like he did and beat him with somewhat superior physical ability but that plan of action wouldn't work against any other Servant since they'd just skill diff him

Toidleboy

HEAVENS FEEL INCOMING!

Isabel

Thanks for reacting to both Fate series guys! I was so stoked to watch the entire thing :)) Also, on the question of why Shirou is a good matchup against Gil but couldn't defeat other heroic spirits, I think it has to do with what he said about Gil not being a warrior, but rather just an ordinary guy with an arsenal. With enough mana Shirou can copy and fire back Gil's blades at him long enough to stand a chance (he's as perfect as a counter gets), but there's no way Shirou would have the blade skills or warrior traits that for example Berserker, Saber, or Lancer have. He could copy their weapons, but whether he could wield them and stand on even playing grounds against them is very unlikely. Another big factor is Gil's ego being his downfall. The guy is so prideful he refused to show any indication of fear or desperation which is why you saw him literally hesitate to use EA before Shirou hacked his arm off lol. He didn't want to acknowledge Shirou's strength in that moment, and I even remember Archer mentioning after his fight with Lancer earlier in the show that he himself is devoid of ego/pride (a quality Shirou also possesses) giving him an edge in the sense that he not only knows his limits, but he isn't ashamed to keep fighting until it gets truly ugly.

Synyster

Bro the fact the Shirou made Gilgamesh, the first servant, pull out his ultimate weapon just to hack his arm off will always be on my all time goat scenes list lol

Synyster

Im so freaking excited

Blood Shot

The movies are the heavens feel route. An alternate story surrounding the same characters in this war.

Blood Shot

And yes, that was waver

Animeke

Cannon, I get where you're coming from with Gilgamesh & Shirou's power balance, I look at it this way: Gilgamesh vs Servants: Gilgamesh's arsenal within Gate of Babylon is entirely made up of noble phantasms and he's on par with other servants in terms of physicality & combat abilities - so other servants don't stand much of a chance. They're simply overwhelmed. Shirou vs Gilgamesh: Within the Unlimited Blade Works reality marble, Shirou can project swords faster than Gilgamesh can deploy his, so UBW is the perfect counter to the Gate of Babylon. Another key factor was Gilgamesh's ego and underestimation of Shirou, which allowed Shirou to gain the upper hand in their fight and close in on Gilgamesh to prevent him from using Ea. Gilgamesh saw it as beneath him to take Shirou seriously, I mean, he didn't even wear his armor lol. Shirou vs Servants: Although Shirou has an ability similar to Gilgamesh - his mastery is in creation, not necessarily fighting. Shirou also doesn't posses the strength and speed servants have. So another servant who's mastered a single combat discipline, is highly competent, and takes Shirou seriously would win, even within UBW.

Animeke

Loved your reactions to UBW & Zero, it's been an amazing journey so far - they've been the highlight of my weeks! And I'm looking forwad to the OVA & then the movies! The movies are a wonder to behold.

kuza

cant wait for the movies

Thunder Nut

I always assumed Archer just returned to that time as a guardian specifically rather than he stayed there as a servant. Because guardians exist to prevent humanity's extinction and Gilgamesh was finna firebomb the world. Pretty sure this isn't Canon but its what makes would make the most sense to me.

Thunder Nut

I can't wait for the Heavens Feel movies bruh, if yall thought the animation was peak in this wait till you see what ufotable does with a movie budget.

joursh

Also, to add onto Shirou vs Gilg, Gilgamesh could've won against Shirou if he pulled out Ea at any time, but Gilgamesh believed it was beneath him and you can see the slight moment of hesitation before he grabs it after summoning it, which costs him his arm, and eventually his life.

joursh

ong lmao, he was standing on nothing but business

kuza

i love fate man

joursh

theres also the underestimation of gilgamesh, who didnt wear his armor, nor use Ea against him. you can see his pride stop him from grabbing Ea fast enough at the end, costing him his arm

kuza

the movies will give u more around the grail

Den Wolf

I really hate Shirou and Gilgamesh fight, it makes no sense how Shirou defeated him when every other hero failed to even get close. Shirou did not do anything different from other, but just for plot reason is just worked, even though his mana and body should not have held out. I remember reading that this is just due to bad adaption and poor explanaition about how UBW and Gate of Babylon interact. About Saber, the reason you are so confused about, is because you skipped the first anime anime fate/stay night that came out in 2006. It is entirely about Saber and her relationship with Shirou. As a reminder this anime is based on a romance visual novel, that has three different story lines that concentrate on different heroines, the firs fate story line is about Saber, second UBW about Rin, third Heavens feel is about another girl. That is why you feel like Saber is taking a backseat in this on, because she is. If you want to learn about Saber's story, you need the watch the original adaption.

del

46:00 oh that’s interesting. you think UBW “wrapped up” the story of Fate Stay Night just because UBW had a “conclusive ending”. I guess I would ask, was there anything brought up in Zero or UBW that was never fully explained? It’s Heaven’s Feel time.

kuza

so hype

kuza

although u will definitely have alot of questions i remember being confused asl for some parts 😭😭

kuza

its literally explained how it DOES make sense lmao

RYK

Yes,that was waver.

Enact

Fate timeline isn’t complicated. People over exaggerate. If we’re Talking about just anime, the main timeline adaptations that people need to watch are the ufotable adaptations and that’s it. Everything else besides the 2006 Fate Stay Night can be considered a spin off or side story Fate Zero - A Prequel to all of Fate Stay Night. Original source material of this came after Fate Stay Night but ufotable released their adaptation of it before their Fate Stay Night adaptations Fate Stay Night - The original story that started it all and is composed of three separate stories / routes Route #1 - Fate Adapted in 2006 by a different studio but nobody recommends since it’s considered too old / the majority agree it was not a good adaptation. As far as why Saber is the “poster child” this entire story revolves around her anctually being the main Character alongside Shirou and it’s the first story of all of Fate. Route #2 - Unlimited Blade Works The show you just watched Route #3 - Heavens Feel The 3 movies that adapt the final route and what completes Fate Stay Night in it’s entirety

Huxley Bennett

Loved these reactions, even (perhaps especially) with the criticisms as it's a very genuine and honest reaction. Just want to answer some questions (without spoiling other fate series). Yes that was Waver the end. Shirou is definitely NOT stronger than Gil. Gilgamesh refuses to take Shirou seriously at any point, but if he had then Shirou would be dead before he could even try and fight back. Never uses his armour, uses a very limited number of attacks at a time, never uses Ea (which Shirou couldn't copy, let alone wield). Even at the end, with Shirou about to reach him, he hesitates to use Ea - which leads to his defeat. As for how Shirou could beat him anyway, Gil doesn't really have actual combat skills, he just controls every weapon ever, whereas Shirou has been training his body for years and his fighting skills through Saber + clashing with Archer. Inside UBW Shirou can match his summoning speed as all the weapons are automatically there already as soon as he sees everything Gil summons. Even with all this, he still cannot kill Gilgamesh as he runs out of mana. Any other servant would beat Shirou as they're not reliant on mass, but rather force, which Shirou has no counter for. When it comes to Saber's character, she has her own route in the original VN, which was (poorly) adapted into its own anime. You're definitely missing a lot of her character by not having seen that (though I have seen it and still don't really care for her character that much). The films are the 3rd route (1st being Saber, 2nd being Rin). Archer is from a route which isn't quite like any of the ones we see in the VN/anime, but is almost identical to Saber's route. Yes, fate is a ridiculous verse to try and understand, it's a crazy widespread IP with such different takes on parts of the verse, and they're all technically canon. The grail is really not that important in the verse. While it's obviously a huge deal for the characters we see, as well as us as viewers who have only seen the grail wars, for the mage world it's just a small deal. Even in this last episode, they mention how the grail war is "just a minor ritual". Looking forward to Heaven's feel, and Strange/Fake! The latter only has a little out atm, but the initial film is worth watching even before the rest comes out, assuming you would get around to it before then anyway.

zoldaic

saber feels different because the writer for F/Z and F/SN is different

RSquirrel

You need to just talk to one very well informed fate fan and filter out all the other voices. Because fate is massive you’re going to get so much info without being able to know which is connected and which isn’t. When you ask a question you get 100 answers that are all slightly different but most are correct but in different ways. When it comes to what to watch next. I suggest you find someone who has watched everything that you trust and listen to them completely. Most likely they will tell you to watch the heavens feel trilogy as it it a different rout in the visual novel ant ties up some of the loose ends you were asking about.

Umineko peak fiction

Heavens Feel movies cement Shirou as one of the all time greats imo and really elavates his char due to being the thematic conclusion to UBW and Fate zero and brings all these ideas together to wrap up the main line of fate . Incredible stuff incoming

Reileen

Glad to see you’ve finished fate ubw. Fate zero is written by Gen Urobuchi Fate stay night is written by Nasu Kinoko. For some of people fate zero is still better than ubw. If you love fate zero, guess you’ll love psycho-pass as well. There will be philosophical depth and social foresight in it (same as fate zero) Fate stay night concentrate on description of boy meeting girls. So there’re three routes for Shirou (Saber,Rin,Sakura) That’s why fz Saber is so different from ubw saber. An interesting contrast: Fate zero ending:good guys don’t have happiness in the end (Kiritsugu,Tosaka,Irisveil,Kariya)bad guys still enjoyed (Caster,Kerei) Fate stay night ubw: Almost every masters are live. Hope you enjoyed these fate series!

Ralph

Need to proceed to the Fate/Stay Night Heaven’s Feel Trilogy movies or Fate Grand Order: Absolute Demonic Front (Gilgamesh focused)

Ralph

You guys are right that was Waver Velvet. His name is now Lord El-Melloi and he also has his own anime spin off

HaoHao 9

You guys can watch Gigguk's 30-minute video explaining the Fate timeline if you want. Maybe after watching the Heaven's Feel movies.

Chayanne Acosta

Needs to watch fate grand order before absolute demonic front Babylonia

Animeke

I don't think Saber felt any different than in Fate/Zero. A lot of people are overlooking that her relationship and circumstances with Shirou are completely different than with Kiritsugu. Shirou respected her & treated her as a companion. Kiritsugu despised her & used her as a puppet. Just look at Saber's interactions with Irisviel, they're almost identical to Shirou. And that's why I love Saber so much, she's honorable and faithful, almost to a fault. Even though she had major disagreements with how Kiritsugu handled everything, she still did everything in her power to win him the grail. I really will never understand the hate. I think people just don't understand her character. And I still love Kiritsugu too, despite all that happened between him and Saber.

Elio

Guys please watch Tensei shitara slime or classroom of the elite now that you finished fate. That would be great for us in this tier. And you can keep watching fate if you want to. The next fate series after UBW are PEAK.

Elio

McKay and cannon I know you will read this😂🫰🏻

Kalizarin

Would absolutely love if yous reacted to the Heaven's Feel movie trilogy, without going into too much detail: it's basically an alternate timeline of UBW where different choices are made so things play out differently. It offers fresh perspectives and info, I think yous would enjoy it!

Zess

We must let managed democracy decide our juicy tier fate. But I hope they watch Heavens feel at least before moving on to the next juicy show.

Navri

Please watch the Heaven's feel movies they are too good to miss out on and its even better in many ways than UBW

Durarara

oh boy heavens feel next geshhhhhhhhhhh

Ari_iya_kia

watch fruits basket you guys

RishadCast

Watch the Heavens Feel movies for more of Ufotables unlimited budget works

LiKeReX

gilgamesh litterally lost because of his pride. he hesitated to use ea and didnt even ues his chains.

Toidleboy

she is written so drastically different in zero from ubw (and the other nasu works) its hard to not see the difference.

Animeke

I don't agree as explained above.

Ryan Asencio

No matter how often I see this, watching Gil lose like this is so stupid. Shirou survives this series because of asspulls and unbreakable plot armor.

Archer

Could've saved time and just said you lack basic literacy

Shockbile Gaming

this anime was always weird in terms of interactions, most masters would've almost died in each episode if a servant just attacked them while they were distracted.

Ryan Asencio

Your mother could have saved us all time by swallowing you.

This is Daniel

It's probably been said, but the order for the main story route is: Fate / Stay Night (Saber route) Fate / Stay Night UBW (Rin route) Fate / Zero (prequel) Fate / Stay Night - Heaven's Feel (Sakura route / true ending).

ThatJakeChap

In case nobody has said it yet, Archer did not survive being impaled by Gilgamesh right after fighting Shirou. For all intents and purposes, he "died" and vanished entirely at that moment. Queue Gilgamesh summoning the Holy Grail and threatening the extinction of humanity, this triggers the "Counter Force" to summon a Guardian to prevent this world ending event as that is the sole reason Guardians exist. That is how Archer appeared again. I don't know why it SPECIFICALLY chose Archer to prevent this tragedy because I assume other Guardians exist but it's probably waved away as coincidence to ensure closure for Rins story arc. This being the purpose of Guardians is explained earlier in the season before the Archer v Shirou fight but based on the post show discussion it seems you guys are misremembering it. Jack said Guardians are meant to protect the grail which is simply not the case. Also, yes, that "rat" was Waver haha.
