What a funny episode to have this intro 😂

jblakk

Lets not be hindsight merchants about their opening talk y'all. I'ma try to get ahead of this lol.

Hafsa

i was about to sleep but I'M HERE IDC

Nami Swannn

LOLS CANNON 😭 well his situation isn’t that bad if you compare it to others, but it was still bad. His dad was abusing him, his mom and grandparents loved him but they didn’t stick up for him. As a child with no power in that situation, you grow resentful of the adults who can put a stop to it but won’t. After the incident with his family (where he only intentionally killed his Dad, the others were an accident), he went out looking for help but nobody reached out a hand, which says a lot about hero society and how reliant the citizens are on them. Had that old lady called for help, I think he’d be on a very different path. But because nobody helped, he internalized a lot of it and felt like this was what he deserved as punishment. Then you have AFO, the ONLY person to help him, whispering in her ears and encouraging him to do bad. And initially he was able refuse to kill, but there’s only so much a broken child can do against the manipulation of an evil mastermind.

M1GZ

Jacked Doof stood no chance against shiggys aura

bondbond53

🗣️🗣️🗣️"I will take Shigaraki's load!!!"

Kayanolive

5:21 YEAHHHH??? LMAO CARTER

All might

in 20 years? how old are y'all

Neptunestar79

You can’t relive that shock you get when you first watch this, truly gruesome

cara

the pre-discussion fiending for shigaraki backstory and these being the episodes 😭

Gdawg88

🥀🥀

Kayanolive

8:28 Dang he got so buff, i dont remember dopenshmirtz looking like that

kai

well yall wanted a motive/backstory and yall got it literally 💀

Mia Malvik ⚞ • ⚟

8:12 HAHA those looks were glorious. Glad to know we were all thinking the same thing

Nami Swannn

I would like to point out how similar Shigaraki and Eri are set up (both kids with uncontrollable destruction like quirks that accidentally killed loved ones, and even their design is similar), but in their time of need, where Shigaraki had AFO reach out a hand to him, Eri had Deku 🥺

Nami Swannn

The discussion about how some quirks are inherently villainous is very intersting. It really is the luck of the draw cuz it’s true, some are more dangerous, but what can you do about it? You can’t ostracize and punish ppl for the way that they’re born, but they also do posses a very real threat. It’s a flaw in the current hero society which is only causing more unfortunate cases of ppl who needed help becoming villains instead. And with quirk singularity theory, this issues is only gonna get worse

bondbond53

I like how MHA has a relatively complex narrative on abusers. There's Overhaul who's unrepentant about it, Endeavor and his attempts to atone and now Shiggy's dad who had a small implication that he was going to attempt to change but didn't get the chance because of Shiggy snapping and his own fear.

Kayanolive

That backstory hit me like 4 trucks holy hell

M1GZ

Yah Cannon is wrong imo at the begging how can you claim he's evil for no sake when you haven't seen his backstory yet?? Especially in an arc that's specifically showing us all the leagues trauma. I'm with Carter we don't even know his backstory so how can you claim that lol. LAST episode AFO stated he murdered his entire family and his trauma just "made him evil" is a huge oversimplification, you can literally say that about any Villain really. I understand what kind of villain Canon is talking about but its very clear from all the crumbs we've gotten so far there's clearly a lot more there we just haven't been shown. Glad he enjoyed the backstory though very unlucky timing lol.

Ana

These the last episodes of season 5 right?

JevCor

I need to take some of Shigarakis load. Okay translators, you're cooking but is it the right recipe.

JevCor

25 is.

All might

21:22 why does Mckay have a big ass smile while saying that😭 "Is he gonna decay the dog😄😄"

Ana

Gonna watch the reaction later just wanna say F shigaraki idc about his boohoo backstory

Ana

Ok so Monday we lit

Albin Limani

The aspect of a "villain" quirk just should not exist. The story of MHA constantly reminds us that labeling things as "villainous" or "heroic" is wrong. Shigaraki's quirk could be one of the best quirks for saving people. Imagine people stuck under buildings or rubble after disasters and he just decays all of that. Quirk's are just what people make them, there are no hero or villain quirks.

Northie

boo 🍅

Gbemi

These episodes were really good. At the time people complained about the censoring of Shigaraki’s backstory

JevCor

Why did you look so excited when you thought it was gonna happen. lmaoo

JevCor

What? No they didn't, they complained because everything else in the arc got censored. But then again its manga readers so they usually make shit up to be mad about.

kai

the day that Shigaraki became a menace to society

Ana

Yes boo shigaraki booo. Tell him invest in some moisturizer

JevCor

Shigaraki is the goat. I feel like you hate everyone in this show who isn't the beacon of kindness and hope though so not surprised lmao

All might

It would be interesting if the itching was directly related to his quirk. or was that just an obvious connection I failed to make the first time around

Ana

Not true shigaraki just a weak villain who got everything handed to him. I love endeavor, I love stain, I love mr compress and twice. I just don’t believe in sob stories being an excuse to hurt people. Just cuz y’all like shigaraki doesn’t mean I have to. I’m team Eren and team light. Shigaraki is no where near that level. He’s just a crybaby

Belly

he itches when he wants to kill people. the itching at home was because he was stressed. he said he only itched at home.

Lexzc

The discrepancies of how decay is portrayed is due to censorship,if you remember back in season one duringthe USJ attack when Shigaraki goes for Aizawa his elbow crumbles and exposes his muscle too before hes able to erase his quirk again, after that one time every instance of Shigaraki's quirk being shown was in the more familiar way where things turn gray and disintegrate like rocks, but the way it is portrayed on his origin episode, where the dog gets torn apart and left in a puddle of blood and pieces of its body its how its meant to be when used on living things, including people,at least thats how it is in the manga. In short, its a gory quirk As for feeling hes much more stronger than Deku after his awakening, thats debatable,i still think that Deku with black whip could restrain him entirely in the air to prevent him from touching the ground or anyone and be able to land a well placed 100% smash on his face and beat him, since shigarakis quirk dosnt grant him any kind of physical resistance, the only villains able to endure 100% smashes so far have been the USJ nomu with shock absorption, muscular and AFO,Shisaki dosnt count,he got rekt.

Kaito Kuroba

The reason why Shigaraki also resents his mom and other family members is because even though they were nice to him, they never went against his dad. He lived in a controlling household for his entire life, and never truly felt understood because everyone just went along with the rules of his dad. The only time his mom was willing to draw the line is when it turned physical, but by that point it was too late.

TheBookerDeWitt

Cannon spoke a whole backstory into existance

Ryan D

I get Cannons point but I think if anything his mom and family being generally good people just makes it so much sadder. His dad was definitely a trash dad, abusing him and everything, and granted the grandparents didn't do anything to stop it so I feel like from a kids point of view you can definitely grow some hatred from that. He was also unaware they were protesting the dads rules at the same time he's melting the house puppy 💀 💀 😭 I think every little thing that could have went wrong did, and paired with the fact that your personality sort of mirrors your quirk in a way just resulted in the worst possible outcome. Shigaraki is 🐐 but yeah I think his family situation being not really "that" crazy bad just makes it so much sadder

KatyRose

Cannon’s points are crazy 💀

Ryan D

and Lemillion ‼️‼️🫶

Hegataro

I think basically all of the league of villain powers can be used for good; Shigaraki can get rid of collapsed rubble, Twice can create a massive work force very quickly. Spinner's the only one without an outright useful quirk, but he basically doesn't have one outside of being able to stick to walls (and that's still pretty good). Dabi is the only one whose is entirely destructive, but that applies to a lot of heroes, too. Shame about the whole "literally burning himself to use his quirk" thing, thought

Ryan D

Yessir, I'm just saying I agree that the family wasn't that bad, lotta nuance to it. U have 🔥 takes no stress

Violet833

Deku and shigaraki both growing up wanting to be heroes. While deku got lucky and met all might, shigaraki met AFO. And the fact nobody stopped to help him when he was a child is crazy, which is to highlight the flaws of the hero society.

KatyRose

Yea I just think it’s funny I’ve never heard anyone say it’s not that bad to shigaraki’s backstory definitely a first lol

Ryan D

Just pointing out I think it makes it sadder that they are nice people

Albin Limani

His dad was a bad dad but it really bugs me when that is all his character is reduced to. He was abandoned by his mom, which left him to fight bad guys(he had no context about One for All and All for One). So based on that trauma he had as a kid, he does not want his son to now grow up and do the same to his kids. Yes, his approach was wrong, but timeouts outside and a few smacks are actually normal things, especially for Japan. He also realizes that he is doing wrong, but he just does it way too late.

KatyRose

Bro is always smiling at the craziest times 💀

Kayanolive

Almost in "let a doctor check that out" range i cant lie

Albin Limani

As someone who absolutely loves Shigaraki's backstory, Cannon does have valid points. Timeouts, yelling and a smack as a kid are not even close to the worst childhood someone can have. What happens when his quirk awakens are what makes the backstory so dark and interesting, before that he had strict parents, big deal.

cozo

@ana you said sob stories isn't an excuse to hurt people then said you like eren 😭

Albin Limani

Fun fact: The OST that plays when Shigaraki kills his family is called: "I don't kill my friends". It was an OST made for Twice, since that is literally the line Twice says before unleashing the Sad Man's Parade, but it just fits so well in that Shigaraki scene that they changed who they used it for.

Rayanh Shequinah Nansha

Which is why Shigi wondering if he would’ve stopped itching if someone had reached their hand out to him before All For One showed up, is so interesting. The fact that that’s a question he asked himself goes to show that All For One really juste exacerbated his desire to destroy so when he doesn’t, his body literally has an allergic reaction.

bigdog

Ep 23 actually so good man what a story

Ryan D

very true. I would agree. It's just hard to not straight up view him as a bad dad when Shigaraki was obviously struggling, well before the incident, and the dad is the root cause of it. I get that it's more normal in Japan, but I just feel terrible for Shigaraki when he just needed someone yk.

KatyRose

Well I don’t think being left outside for hours is the same as time out and I would also say his dad is abusive not just strict but I just thought it was funny because I’ve never seen anyone else say that before

Albin Limani

He is abusive, no denying that, but for example he is not even close to abusive like Endeavor is. He is also abusive because of his previous trauma of being abandoned by his mom. He also realizes that what he is doing is wrong, just way too late. It just bugs me when most of the fandom reduces his character to he is a bad dad, when he is a much deeper character than that.

Rayanh Shequinah Nansha

It’s the funniest thing to me, the way he just grins or laughs when things get dicey. I know only one former reactioner who used to react this way and it never fails to amuse me.

Ana

Eren had more than a sob story they were at war like…he’s not doing it to just be doing it. It was them or him

Albin Limani

His dad is a bad dad and abusive, that is not even a debate. It is just not all his character is and him being like that makes for a very interesting dynamic.

Ana

@kaya shigaraki not gonna let you hit. I really didn’t think y’all would be crying like this cuz little ol me don’t like shigaraki. Like it’s a tv show lol 😂

Rayanh Shequinah Nansha

Reducing him to being nothing but a crybaby when the only time he cried was as a 5 year old is crazy work. The way the Geks explained his state of mind speaks to more than that. That post discussion was good.

Albin Limani

Also Shigaraki's backstory might be one of my favorites in all anime. It is a bit simple, but the way it is built up and then culminating with one of the darkest things I have ever seen. Just perfection.

Ana

Clearly I haven’t watched it yet. And clearly that’s how I feel about shigaraki he’s a crybaby to me. I see why y’all defending him. Y’all just like him all this unnecessary crying omd

KatyRose

I mean maybe it’s just because I work with children and their cognitive and physical development but shigaraki’s fathers abuse in my eyes was enough to be very concerning

botanbutton

I have finally seen all of "My Villain Academia" after avoiding it for a few years. And knowing what I know from everything after? 🤯 I definitely did read the manga chapter "Shimura Tenko: Origin" and "Shigaraki Tomura: Origin" at initial publication though, couldn't miss that.

Robert

Wait does the geks know 6x1 is canon? They’ve skipped all ep 1s so not far fetched to assume they would skip this one

Daniella

The fact that Shimura left Kotaro to protect him from All For One which ended up causing him to punish his kids and lead his own son to all for one anyway is so crazy and sad. And although, yes Shigaraki was loved and cared for by his family feeling suffocation in your own home and like no-one is on your side is just as traumatising as physical abuse imo. It was the little things of his family ignoring his feelings and simply obeying trash rules that caused everything to pile up and cause the tragedy. So yes on the surface it's not a terrible home life, but had they opposed his father's rule from the beginning and actually helped Shigaraki rather than a false comfort, he could have been a great hero. Edited just to add: if your child feels like they can’t express themselves out of fear of being screamed at then you’re a bad parent simple as.

zak

cannon kinda spitting

Swish Mix Productions

6x1 and 7x1 ARE NOT FILLER BTW GEKS, THERE ARE NO MORE FILLERS IN MHA

Layla

No he isn’t 😑

AJCoCoQueen

This was when I grew a heart for shigaraki. Yes he’s BAD… but dang dude… I feel for him.

Sam Davis

Syndrome was messing up a operation & almost got himself killed then got mad about it cause he was saved then told to go home

Nanami's Wife

It is incredible how Shigaraki and Deku despite traveling different paths, the turning point in their lives was because the two of them wanted to hear someone tell them you can be a hero. Their dreams were rejected and then were eventually "saved" by their own masters. It's kinda crazy how much Shigaraki and Deku's stories mirror each other

LookingForOwls

I'm assuming that "Paranormal Liberation Front" sounds way cooler in Japanese.

Alex Mehmeti

If I'm not wrong in the manga Shigaraki's decay is way more visceral, people just end up like his dog. In tha anime they censored it a little

Vinny Deluca

This is all pretty censored compared to what we got in the manga lol, thats why there is some discrepancy with how they depict shigarakis quirk, they are censoring what it actually does by just turning them to grayscale dust

Silentwtf

woah woah woah, where the pink and black (hated animal control guy} forgot name, shirts at

Mia Malvik ⚞ • ⚟

Childrens reception and reaction to abuse varies significantly and experiences that are debilitating to some might be completely fine for others. The mindset of comparing it to your own experiences and being like "well I've had it bad but I never would have reacted that way" is kinda lacking understanding of other people experiences. (It comes across that way at least). What decides how bad someone's trauma is, is not a set scale of some things being worse than others. It's a combination of many factors but maybe most important is someone's personality and emotional stability and durability. Shigaraki was a fragile kid and to him his situation became unbearable. Basically my point is that cannons take at the end felt unnecessary and kinda insensitive especially because it's such a real subject🤷‍♀️

~Mercedeez Lee~

Shigaraki or Tenko was an innocent child that just happened to get a quirk too powerful for him to handle at his age. Similar to Eri. Mix in with the fact his father was constantly punishing him for the smallest of things, which he did not deserve at all. You end up with a traumatised kid who’s mentally unstable. Sometimes we forget just how fragile a child’s mind is. Yes the other family members were nice and all, especially his mother BUT they still did not step in to stop the father whenever he went after Tenko. So the resentment he has towards them isn’t that surprising. That household was a toxic family environment not just because of the fathers controlling methods but because the other adults let the abuse continue until it was too late

Jyle

y’all always ask/complain about something the episode you’re about to get it , the irony always makes me laugh lol i love it.

Swish Mix Productions

MHA always comes back and answers everything, LITERALLY EVERYTHING. If you had doubts, its coming 99% of the time.

Ryan D

fs 🤝

Sam Davis

Tomuras backstory is truly devastating

Mia Malvik ⚞ • ⚟

The soundtrack playing in the background when he kills his family is so good dude. One of my favourites in the show

Black_galaxi BTS

In this season and in season seven you have to be prepared to know the origins of several characters. ☠️

Vernus

Finally the backstory we needed

Vernus

Re Destro surround himself with stressful environments to increase his quirk power. He’s the CEO of the company he’s doing a bunch of shady things in the shadows trying to keep away from the heroes, while also recruiting for his organization. There is no peace in his life because peace leads to reduction of his power

Cat

I think it's easy to see villain characters and associate their quirks as evil or "villainous" too. But quirks aren't evil. They are tools. And tools in evil hands are dangerous. But quirks have many applications. Shigaraki's could be used to decay obstructions, debris etc. It would be very helpful in rescue missions as a hero. A quirk is not inherently villainous. You just got to get creative

Jyle

Since we have 3 episodes left before the binge, are you doing a single drop weds?

Pavlo

Guys the league of villains is named that bc shigaraki loves league of legends

Animeke

Shigaraki's origin is never an easy watch. Accidentally killing 85% of your family in such a gruesome way is just sickening and depressing. It's like his life was destined to be nothing but tragedy.

rue

shigaraki saying he was “kindly” rejected mirrors deku’s experience when his mom gave up on his dream bc he was quirkless (something she admitted feeling guilty about years later) which ties into one of the story’s core themes of how parents can damage their kids even unintentionally

McKay Carter

I clowned him a little at first but he was sick

Vernus

Read MVA section in the manga. You will love him even more lol

McKay Carter

Make me want Shigaraki to get a good ending now

Nashi

I could feel for Shigaraki and be more understanding if he wasn't the biggest edge lord there ever was. If he wore his trauma on his sleeve, as frustration or adaptability however it could be, I would like him more but no, he just evil laughs because oh he loves destroying so much hahaha cmon man, I'm not saying it's unrealistic due to what he went though but it doesn't make him compelling at all. The show tries to portray him as a calculated fella who knows what he's doing but if you dig deeper he's exactly what Cannon said. I'd get him hating heroes as a projection of everything that sparked what happened to his family but it's such a leap to actually meticulously go through it it for so many years without ever giving a compelling "why" he's still doing it, "why" does he still follow AfO, "why" is he inspiring to other villains, I feel it's all shallow. And to out AfO on the drawer for so long for Shigaraki only for him to also be as shallow was such a bummer. Idk if the last season does anything special we'll have to see

Violet833

I feel like for a good ending, deku would have to get through to him somehow but Im not sure how that could play out tbh.

jrnoodles

Thanks Geks! The dog! :(

Miitei

That's just how Mckay is lol

Nami Swannn

Ofc when you put it in the grand scheme of things his dad isn’t “that bad” but semantics like that don’t really matter to the 5 year old child who’s regularly being abused by his father 😭 I don’t disagree with you’re saying, there’s def worse dads he could’ve been stuck with, but his take was a wild and pretty dismissive lol. And going down that whole “could’ve been worse” path gets slippery cuz it applies to everyone, even Endeavour could’ve been worse.

Nami Swannn

100% agree and I feel like it’s told to us pretty early on through the likes of Shinso and Bakugo (and now Toga’s backstory as well) that the way society labels ppl based on their quirks is a flaw that we should be trying to move away from

Noelle

I can also agree on how shigaraki's situation wasn't "that bad", but here's how I think it led to him "wanting to kill his dad" - I think that the chain of events was that his destructive quirk suddenly manifested at a bad time killing his dog, because he was shocked and likely scarred by this he thought it was a villain and thats how he ended up killing his sister, and then he was in emotional anguish about this and because HE WAS 5!! he sought comfort from his mother resulting in her death. At this point, having already killed almost half of his family AND BEING 5 YEARS OLD and traumatized and resentful of his family because of how they stand by while he's being punished for something unreasonable, he kills the remaining members out of a childish hatred that comes from not being old enough to understand what's happening. I don't think he was deranged at all. I think it's kind of natural to think you "hate" your family for something small when you're a kid. I've working in childcare and "I hate you" is not an uncommon think to hear from an upset child. Especially from shigaraki where he kinda has a good reason to be mad. The only reason that this situation ended in tragedy rather than a family fight that they could have eventually gotten over was because of shigaraki's destructive quirk which he didn't know how to control, and therefore he had the power to enact his childish feelings

Matt C

They still have to watch the 3rd movie right? I would assume Monday is a single ep drop, Wednesday movie drop, Saturday 2 ep drop, and next Monday the binge

Nami Swannn

ofc how could I forget my goat‼️‼️‼️

GoonTaco

He didn’t kill his family on purpose, just his dad.

Rayanh Shequinah Nansha

Except destroying quite literally brings him relief. Did you not see him agonize on the floor as a child as he itched and scratched himself to the point of tears because he was forcing himself not to destroy/kill? Even without his memories, grief and guilt ate him up inside so he didn’t kill on a whim; All For One quite literally gave him permission. It’s been said and shown before that a quirk is an intrinsic part of a person’s character and personality. It’s their mirrored selves. Thus by destroying, he feels liberated. That concept alone is so beautiful to me that I was finally glad to have a reason not to feel indifferent about his character. His memories returning is also what enabled him to say something like “I don’t need a future” because he’s aware of the magnitude of what he destroyed (his family) so now all he can do is embrace that fate. I for one like the fact that this is his driving force in his villainy. It’s certainly different than anything I would’ve expected and falls right in line with what we know of quirks so far.

Cannon Andrus

Maybe I’ve had worse bruh haha maybe that’s why I don’t think it’s that bad

Cannon Andrus

I think I’ve just had some worse stuff so it doesn’t resonate with me all the way

Seth Aasland

“I feel like he’s way more powerful than Deku!” I find your lack of faith disturbing, Cannon

Alex

Mon-chan 😭😭😭

SuperChuckABoo

I agree with Katy being locked out of the house for hours and hours is an extreme form of a timeout. The Dad realized he went too far near the end, but it was too late and the damage was done. I think Shigaraki was probably always an unstable kid and the abuse on top of it just exacerbated things.

Ana

Thank you Nashi. I didn’t know it was wrong to have different opinions on characters. Like I don’t like him and never will he’s a Mickey Mouse villain 😭😭😂😂

Noelle

I like how Shigaraki's backstory gives a good look at some of the ways this current quirk-based hero society can actually be damaging and create villains. Yes, comparatively, Shigaraki's family situation wasn't that bad. It wasn't great by any means and it's a good example of how generational trauma can negatively impact a family, but compared to some anime back stories, his situation does seem less terrible. I think that's kinda the point actually. In this quirk society, people aren't born villains - they're created. Even people whose trauma might be considered "less" than others, because the family situation isn't the only reason he ended up like that. Shigaraki became a villain because of the mix of several unfortunate factors coming together at once: the tension in his household because of his father's hatred for heroes, Shigaraki's destructive (not inherently villainous) quirk manifesting at a bad time, and the fact that hero society has made people complacent and too trusting in heroes to the point where bystander effect hits harder. Destructive quirk aside, the factors that were caused because of the hero based society they live in (father's feelings of abandonment & complacent people) were the things that drove Shigaraki to a place where All for One was able to use his trauma to manipulate him into becoming a villain. I think pointing out these unsavory parts of hero society gives grounds to why Shigaraki wants to get rid of it. Other villains in the show, such as Stain, have also given reason for their villainy that point to a fault in the society they live in rather than just a problem with the villain. Obviously they take it too far and that's what makes them villains, but the world-building in this show is immaculate on how so many things come full circle like this.

KatyRose

I mean true but ive had a 4 year old at my job tell me he was going to get his dad’s gun and shoot me just because he didn’t want to listen to me and this was a mentally stable kid, so shigaraki wanting to kill his dad in the moment isn’t like totally unrealistic i guess idk 💀

Ana

L just like shigaraki. Weakest villain in anime history

Rayanh Shequinah Nansha

Same with Eri’s quirk. While she erased her own father, she could also reverse what happened to Lemillion. It’s about the guiding hand they receive.

McKay Carter

Didn’t he when he said “I hate you all”? Maybe I remember that scene wrong

Rayanh Shequinah Nansha

Well, not one person will react similarly even if they go through the same things, plus I think it’s important to take into account that he had an urge to destroy just piling up inside him that he wasn’t fully aware of. He was only able to exercise it because of his quirk. Without the quirk, it’s unlikely he would’ve gone there.

Noelle

Fr. Like Deku literally said this to Eri . And she also accidentally killed her dad when her quirk manifested but we don't go around calling her quirk villainous. This whole labeling of quirks as villainous is part of the reason they have so much undue discrimination and other problems in this society.

Alex

they did it on purpose I'm almost certain XD they could have quite easily replaced "load" with "burden" but they knew what they were doing hahaha

Noelle

Is it a hot take that i think it sounds cool in english too lol

Tyler Owens

I’m a vet with PTSD and my dog saved my life. I feel like if something horrible like this happened to him, I’d want to destroy everything too. Shigaraki is a great but tragic villain

Neemz

Bro Shiggy’s backstory is so painful…sad peak. His mom running to him 🥲🥲🥲

Cat

Deku's always giving wise advice. It's why we love him. Exactly the similarities between Eri and Shigaraki are crazy. Her quirk could definitely have been labelled by people as "a villains quirk" if her story had went another direction and we didn't see her use the quirk to heal Deku. Or if someone else had found her and manipulated her like Tenko

Jack

I can see that he did necessarily kill his family on purpose besides his dad, his powers reacted to his hatred in that moment. But his dad he definitely killed on purpose

Cat

Fair but I think you can hate or resent someone and not want to kill them. He just lost control of his quirk. I think the only one he intentionally killed was his dad

Belly

it’s funny when people think this is a joke but it’s real 😭

humbleandkindness

Eri is another example of horrific quirk manifestation, if you remember - she literally rewinded her dad back to before he existed, which is why her mother gave her up to the Shie Hassaikai. Shigaraki’s backstory, and the backstories of the rest of the League, are so important to the narrative, because their character’s origins and motivations directly challenge those of the main cast. A hero’s job is to make lip service into reality, but what happens when they don’t? Being born with a quirk easily applicable to hero work or other good things is praised even though it’s not a controllable trait - doesn’t that mean the opposite is also true? How much trauma is considered acceptable for a character to be the way they are? Horikoshi definitely cooked with the way he’s written these characters. I also find it interesting that ReDestro said that quirks influence people’s personality, because while I can kind of see that, the lack of overall knowledge about quirks makes me question how valid that statement is.

Nami Swannn

I think it's more complicated than that. Part of me thinks that scene is so scrambled on purpose. His emotions were intentionally all over the place and hard to pin down because how was a kid supposed to make sense of anything that was happening in that moment? He was angry at his family, frustrated with his "allergies" and then terrified when his quirk manifested. All his resentment and anger and hatred were already on the surface. He loves his family but also resents them for never sticking up for him. Kids tend to feel emotions very strongly and can jump from love to hate at the drop of a hat without understanding the gravity of those words. When he was reaching out to his sister and mom, he didn't actively try to kill them. His brain was such a mess that he didn't even realize he was doing it and thought it was a villain attack. He remembers his family as people he hated to reconcile with (in the moment), accidentally killing them. So he's saying he hates them, but he's still reaching for them. It's just like how he says nobody saved him because he deserved the punishment, or how he represses the memory of the incident; they're all things that make the situation easier to swallow. The only one we see him go in with the intent to kill is his dad.

Yabadabadoo

Both Tenko and Deku wanted to hear the same thing as a kid "You can become a hero"

Farfaraway

It’s all for one!! He manipulated shiggy to be a villain he is now. If only he was properly saved back then, i doubt he would be one:(

Violet833

Yes it's really interesting to see throughout the seasons, we see the flaws of the hero society and how they've given birth to the villains and you can understand and see how they ended up that way.

Jack

That’s why I brought up Shinso, perfect example!

M1GZ

MANGA SPOILERS The itching is actually because afo gave him decay and it was never meant to be his original quirk so it was incompatible with his body.

Jyle

why would they do a 1ep drop before a 2ep one ,i don’t rly see that happening but I did totally forget about the movieee I do think that’s before season 6.

Swish Mix Productions

Literally, idk if they already said it in the show or not but it’s facts him and spinner were LOL players

Swish Mix Productions

The movie is “suppose” to be right after season 5, but ssshh I lowkey want them to forget so we can get to the PEAKEST of PEAK

Kevin

And then to piggy back off of this, you can see in the episode in the present time where he decayed one person and it trickled down the line also when he hit the floor and it decayed redestros suit.. before he fully accepted his past he was not able to do that he was only able to decay one thing at a time bc if he could he would’ve gotten rid of everybody at push in season 1, I think they even touched on that, but that to say when he killed his mom and grandparents his quirk had just appeared so it’s at its max for how old he was at the time before he could control it, just like Deku at the us orientation when he saved uruaka, so when he hit the ground when he said he hates them it trickled down to the mom and grandparents. So I don’t think it was intentional but more so just uncontrolled.

Swish Mix Productions

McKay knows when shit is about to hit the fan and he loves it 🔥🔥

Jeremy

Cannon is right unfortunately, although I can see why people disagree

Lori

You gotta remember that Tomura was 5 years old. At that age, your parents are your entire world.

Lori

And also remember, he WANTED to be saved afterward. He felt guilty and waited for someone to reach out to him. (Again, he was 5. Kids that age don’t necessarily know how to seek help.) If someone ANYONE other than All For One had shown him kindness and gotten him the help he needed, he would have had a vastly different life.

Dub_quinn

It’s not the saddest back story, but I like it because it gives Tomura somehow both responsibility (for wanting to kill) and the exemption of accountability (because he’s a kid given power no kid is emotionally ready for). He’s not a kid now, but he’s had influence from AFO, so it’s still a tug-of-war between what he’s responsible for and what he’s exempt from being responsible for. I really like hearing the geks sort through this all!

Dub_quinn

I always thought he was itching as like a physical manifestation of his internal discomfort or suppressing himself

Dub_quinn

Makes me think of Eri’s quirk which was used for bad under overhaul but good when with Deku. It truly depends on how you use it, less about what it is

Dub_quinn

I love when McKay grins at the wildest stuff, makes me laugh so much hahah

akirasuzuki

Little Tenko was so cute 😭 & The scene with Shigaraki with white hair laughing towards the sky is one of the manga covers!!

Ali

The countdown to season 6 ep 11 begins 😣😣😣

ge_minight

Omg ahaha I knew that shigi and spinner were LOL players, but I didn't even Click that their name comes from it

ge_minight

I might be wrong, but I think he didn't even touch other family members (except for the dog and sister, well and dad). The quirk was too strong that it just spread from the ground to others like to a certain area, they just happened to be there

ge_minight

I don't know if people already said it below, but plz don't skip 1st ep of season 6

SuperChuckABoo

It's definitely a slippery slope when you start comparing "scars". From the outside we can say he "overreacted" to some "tough love". I think what we can take away from this is that abuse is abuse. There's better ways to approach discipline, even something that you believe is super minor can having lasting effects on a child. You never know how your actions are gonna effect someone in the future and maybe that is also a point. Not gonna even involve the quirks on top of that.

Night Sterling

I’ve always viewed quirks as neither good nor evil cause its always how you use it that makes it “good” or “evil” kinda like a gun for example

bfc2307

One of my fav eps😭 I wish they watched the ending songs for S6🥲the way they changed the visuals to match certain episodes was one of my favourite things 🥹

TED103

this show is so f good

Yam

Remember that quirks are tied with the personality For example: Bokugo's quirk is Explosion and his personality is explosive Endeavor's quirk is Hell fire and his personality is fiery Uraraka's quirk is Zero Gravity and her personality is Light-hearted, uplifting Toga's quirk is Transform and her personality is Unstable, identity hungry Shigaraki's quirk is Decay and his personality is Hateful, Corrosive, Destructive Thats how it works on the MHA world, the quirk have something to do with your personality Also, please next batch 5x25/6x1-3 so we could get the binge faster TuT

Caraxes🐐DT

Can’t wait for next upload 🔥

Alanin_8💜

Well there is a certain panel that was cut from Shigaraki's backstory since Bones thought it wasn't going to be important yet...it ended up being one of the most important panels in the manga lol

Alanin_8💜

I'm so excited for S6!!! There's no more filler by the way, so don't skip S6 ep 1 or S7 ep 1! They're all Canon

Marlon

fully agree with Cannon on the question of Shigaraki's motives

baisenri

ya know the way cannon feels about koda? that’s how i feel about toga so i feel you jack! more than you know 🫩

T.Yaseen

Shigaraki's backstory is peak, for the wrong reasons yes but it's really good

Vextipher

I absolutely love the music when Tenko starts falling apart. Tragic and captures the feeling of disassociation so perfectly. Top 3 OST of MHA for me and I could leave it on repeat for hours.

Albin Limani

No it is not. Shigaraki and Spinner are canonically League of Legends players.

Albin Limani

The fact that this soundtrack was created for Twice's Sad Man's Parade but then was changed to that Shigaraki moment is so cool.

Albin Limani

They do influence personalities. They are present in nearly every character we see in the story. Bakugo-explosive, Endeavor-Fiery, Ochaco-lighthearted, Jiro-loves music, Toga-bloodthirsty and identity problems since she can turn into other people, Stain-also bloodthirsty, Shigaraki-destructive etc. Nearly every character's personality is based around their quirk.

Pavlo

This is not bait

bondbond53

I think some people have pointed this out already but for me it is even more tragic that Shigaraki's backstory is not "that bad". By this I refer to Shigaraki's words when he says this family 'kindly rejected' him. Hero society at the moment is such that his dad was able to make a life for himself despite Nana Shimura's abandonment in order to protect him and do her job as a hero. So on the surface everything ended up okay, heck their house is expensive and they all live together with Tenko's grandparents. But beneath the surface his dad is verbally and physically abusive and triggers Tenko's itchiness. This bodily reaction indicates a serious stress level in a 5 y.o. All this while nobody is stepping in for him no matter how much they love him and outside these instances are there for him. Only before Tenko awakens his quirk does his mother put an ultimatum to the dad. Otherwise, I bet Tenko felt almost gaslit - 'How come my mother, sister and grandparents love and care for me so much but when my father abuses me do they do nothing? It means I actually deserve it'. It's a level of mental abuse that it maybe would've been better if his circumstances were more straightforward and "harsher". That's how I see it

GoonTaco

It is 100% scrambled on purpose. He was a kid, they tend to say stuff they don’t actually mean. When his mom starts decaying and running towards him, he reaches out with both hands to grab her before she falls apart in front of him. Also look at his face for most of the flashback, he’s definitely not enjoying what he’s doing😭

Marsuvies Black

I like that all for one is evil for evil sake it's refreshing, just like some people choose to be good some people like being bad. I think that movie and shows have too many gray characters these days I get tired of bad guys that are just misunderstood.

JulioLG

I've forgotten about Nana's flashbacks... bro they hit hard How is the "kids show" going? 😅 Great discussion in the post as usual, the abuse, the society reaction to something different (little Tenko asking for help), the nature of quirks.. Horikoshi surely did a great job posing deep questions with his writing in MHA; and best part it's most of them are present or perfectly relate in our present society. edit: also the line "in order to save strangers they don't ever know, heroes will hurt their families" it's crazy and applies to many real world circunstances

Chosos Wife

Are you guys gonna react to the new JJK S3 TRAILER

JulioLG

Fully agree with your final statement, it's other kind of damage. "Don't just watch, come and help me", and aftewards acting like nothing happened, terrible.

Snatchen

where are the koda shirts?

Chlo

bruh......😭

Julio cruz

Carter's face at 5:20 I'm dying!! lolololol

cara

I wonder if it'd be better to do movie 3 for the next drop and then can do the last episode of this season and 6x1-2 together? kind of a good spot for it, "during" work studies, post-MVA but will come back to the s5 finale?? idk this is hard.. but s6 starts going at ep 1, I don't want a movie pause once its started😭.....but im just desperate for the 3-13 binge😭

Chlo

agreed. claiming that someone's trauma isn't that bad feels pretty insensitive :^/

Chlo

absolutely not

Anees Navai

if you're gonna call Shigaraki's quirk a "villian quirk" then you better be prepared to do the same for Eri. Her quirk also manifested by killing her family. Also Thirteen the blackhole hero. Her quirk also just disintegrates things.

Chlo

nashi and ana both with the abysmal takes 💔💔

Chlo

great point! we get various different depictions of abusers, and i feel that isn't something that's often explored well in anime

Ana

Y’all still crying 😢?

Conk

If you dont want JJK s3 spoilers. DO NOT watch the trailer

Andrew Mohan

she definitely does have a villain quirk, difference between her and shiggy is that she was saved by heros. And overhaul was simply using her as a tool for his own benefit while afo was building shiggy up to be his predecessor. If she was in the hands of afo she easily would have been a villian.

Jyle

nooo there’s so many spoilers

Ksweets

“do your best” is one of the top 2 main themes in the entire show, i love when AFO steals all mights lines. im pretty sure they say do your best like 100 times in the whole show

IQLou

Carter kills me lmfaoooo

Dub_quinn

Carter calling this a disturbing kid backstory, yep yep! And I’d say some episode titles coming up can kind of spoil what’s going to happen so try not to read them if possible 😅

All might

Describing Shigaraki as a fragile child only proves Cannon's point further? And I feel like anyone can make commentary on characters in a show 🤷‍♀️

All might

I feel like this depiction makes more sense with the quirk name. Cuz it actually seems like they're decaying, vs guts

All might

it was done purposefully so its not that crazy but I do love what Horikoshi has created with their parallels

All might

@McKay Carter we can tell by your smiles😭

Chosos Wife

Like what other than the fight we already know is happening cos it was announced the end of season 2 and one person still being alive

Sickness

If you guys had actually watched that OVA called All Might Rising that I told you guys to react to a while back you would know a lot more about All Might and his master who is the grandmother of shigaraki.

cade-carter

since the beginning the show has shown us that usually the ugliest people turn into villains because society shuns them. Like if you go look at the freaks at the end of S1. Its very sad. Yall even said Shinso had an evil power with his brainwashing and yall werent even aware of what u were saying. Having naturally off putting or destructive powers ruins many lives. Like toga is forced to crave blood by her power, however if people hadnt shunned her they could have easily provided free blood.

cade-carter

The issue with his life was his dad was abusive but no one stopped him. His mom and grandparents just told him to suck it up or didnt stop it from happening so he couldnt trust them to actually help. Then he had his horrible rash. Then he watched his sister lie which he just couldnt comprehend at 5 years old. All he understood was that his family did nothing to protect him. Then his mind snapped when he started killing them and it was to late to turn back.

lololol

ur pfp prolly takes away from your credibility lmao

forthwanderer

bro that backstory gave ME trauma, I was not looking forward to seeing that again

forthwanderer

great 2 episodes, great reactions

Mdmarki

I rlly dont know which drop are we getting today, just episode 25? ep 25 + season 6 ep 1, ep 25 and movie?

Jeremy

am i the only one who thinks the next mha movie is cheeks and almost dont want them to react to it

Lexzc

It must be linked to his quirk, since they are linked to their behaviour, kid wanted to have everything so he set out to take it

katsuki’s wife

I’m not sure if the movie is worth slowing down for.

Mdmarki

Whetever they do a single drop or a movie drop alone ir will be harder to catht up, they will need a another binge

~Mercedeez Lee~

I keep forgetting about the movie ( kinda don’t want them to do it till later cause it’ll interrupt the series flow in a way ). Episode 25 can easily be put together with S6 ep 1 & 2 since they connect well. Otherwise they’ll have to do another binge again in s6 or s7 to catch up if they only do another 1 episode drop and then also only do the movie for next drop

Mdmarki

Yeah I just want them to start season 6 already to binge it and then binge season 7 after that. There is only 4 weeks left which means around 13 drops

Swish Mix Productions

Movie is cool but I much rather them continue series(s6) rn and do movie later if they have time

Kayanolive

Cant wait to see how THAT news headline in the movie will fit into the canon LMAOO

Earthshatter

Im with cannon, it's not that his backstory isn't "that bad" is just that I feel like I needed more, don't know exactly what but it wasn't a satisfying backstory IMO

M1GZ

Then look deeper

M1GZ

Same here it’s just very clearly not canon lol

M1GZ

Kinda agree with many people here that the third movie can totally wait till post binge because its so disconnected from the main plot and feels the most random and non canon. While 5x25 and 6x1 flow right into one another.

Belly

honestly the movie can wait. we need the binge 😭

JevCor

I'm praying for it but I have a gut feeling we are losing a day to the movie.. :(

Mdmarki

They are streaming so they will drop it at some point after it ends, could be 1 hour after or even 4 hahah

mina

eri has a similar experience as shigi. except she was too little to understand when her quirk manifested and rewinded her dad

Lexzc

His backstory directly puts in to question the values, morals and legitimacy of the hero society, hows that not satisfying?

Chosos Wife

I'm assuming you wrote this at the beginning of the video

Mdmarki

I NEED THE DROP 😭

Violet833

So we're supposed to get the movie today?

Mdmarki

Hmmm there is 1 ep left from season 5 so idk if they gonna do 5x25 and 6x1 or just a single drop and leave the movie for Wednesday. If I were them I would leave the movie for the momento they catch up with season 7

Alanin_8💜

...I need that drop...I NEED IT!!!

Rei

Movie after the binge would be betterr

Nyx

That's a massive reach calling his dad abusive, we saw one time (besides that end cuz he was trying to stop him) that his dad hit him cuz his sister was a little rat and said he went in his study the rest we saw like cannon says was him getting time out for breaking his "One rule" was he father of the year obviously not but was he the worst father of the year absolutely not

Earthshatter

The thing with his backstory, at least for me, is that it doesn’t really explain how he became the person he is now. We see all the trauma the abuse, the tragedy with his family, the pain of his Quirk awakening but it doesn’t fully connect those events to the mindset and goals he has as a villain. It feels more like we’re just being shown a string of tragic moments rather than a clear progression of how that suffering shaped his worldview. Because of that, it comes off less like a full origin story and more like a highlight reel of trauma that doesn’t fully explain the person he’sbecome, the backstory tell us he's not evil for the sake of being evil but at the same time tells us he enjoyed killing, then in the present he sees destruction and killing as a form of liberation, but it's not stated clearly how he transformed from a morally wrong villain to a pure chaos villain

Nyx

Now I'm bout to be done with season 6 so idk if tell us further that his dad was extremely abusive rat but I feel like a lot of you guys make people out to be worse than they really are and excusing Shigaraki horrendous behavior I was hit has a kid with belt and cord and I was pissed but I never wanted to murder my father and kill the rest of my family cuz they didn't stand up for but that just my opinion

Jenny D

Shigaraki's backstory was sad. I could be wrong, but i was under the impression that maybe Shigaraki wasn't built for his quirk and that's why he was itchy? Or it could also be psychological because of always having his dad be mad at him. It affected his hair so I was thinking it could affect his skin. I do agree with Cannon that some quirks are definitely more villainous. It is easy to see Eri's quirk used for good when used right, but I'm not sure what good Shigaraki's quirk could do. Unless he can undecay someone. I'm ready for the binge! I did it this weekend because I knew I wouldn't have as much time during the week. I hope we don't get the movie because I wanna do the binge.

Bailey Nelson

I think it could be a useful quirk for saving, such as decaying debris that someone is trapped under.

Jenny D

I suppose if he could isolate it to just the debris.

Tivy

Shiggy has one of the most depressing villain origin stories of all time bro

botanbutton

@Nyx "That's a massive reach calling his dad abusive" I'mma stop you here, fam. I gotta get on my soapbox. Abuse can be done mentally, emotionally, physically, psychologically, morally, sexually, etc. It doesn't matter how it was done because the fact remains that he was abusive, and it resulted in Shigaraki Tomura. Just because it doesn't leave scars on the skin doesn't make it better or worse. You can't just go around ranking abuse and trauma because any kind of abuse can change who you are fundamentally as a person. THAT'S FACT. I had to study and learn all of this since I worked with kids that came from abusive upbringings half the time. I did that for 13 years. It didn't matter the abuse, those kids were CHANGED, and it takes every resource to help steer them in positive directions if their changes were negative or detrimental to themselves and others. Of course, there's never a reason to kill people let alone your whole family because they didn't do a thing. It happens IRL, and those people (even kid/teenagers) get put in jail or a mental facility for a long time. Shigaraki's response is a super exaggeration for this story. :)

TheDirkiestDigg

Similar to the other "Origin" episodes in the show, it means more so the starting point of their journey to what they become. The rest of the story is their origin and how they progress. Shigaraki's backstory is that of tragedy. Everything could've have been fixed most likely, but right before it can, the worst possible thing happens. Family finally sticks up for him and his dad realizes he needs to change? Whoops, all dead. The first person that actually helps him will save him? Enter All for One. The important info from Shigaraki's backstory is that the situation he was in happened directly because of the way society is structured. Therefore, All for One uses that to warp Shigaraki into what we know now. The tragedy aspect is to show that at any point Shigaraki could've been saved and put on the right path, but the worst person possible was the one that "saved" him.

Wyld89

Would like to quickly point out, Tenko Shimura had 2 other friends. He told his mother that no one would play with those 2 kids, so he reached out to them and offered to play heroes with them, and because of that, they told him he could be the one to play All Might

Aby

The third movie is my favorite movie, but I understand wanting to get on with the show. Well, it’s been decided anyway lol, but good reactions as always! As for Shigaraki, there are always ‘worse’ backstories. But this story explains his behavior well if you look at it deeply. A lot of his behavior was manipulated by AFO, and if he was raised by anyone else he could’ve found healthier outlets for his emotions and quirk. But AFO knowingly cultivated his hatred, trauma and destructive quirk. Murdering your whole family is pretty horrible on its own, but I get that by saying his backstory wasn’t ‘bad’ enough before that. However that part wasn’t shown to explain who he is today. Killing most of his family was an accident (everyone but his abusive dad, and he didn’t know the rest of his family loved him enough to stand up against dad because they never got a chance to say it). Shigaraki is who he is today not only because of his family, but because of everything that came after.

Fatipapi (Byakuya’s Girl)

I kinda agree w you, Cannon. I thought shigaraki's childhood would've been worse too lmao. Like, sure, it wasn't 'nice', but getting an asswhooping as a kid and being put outside seems to not weigh up against just going totally insane and becoming a coldblooded killer and liking it 😂

Chlo

but we also have to consider that he was a young child who is not mature enough to understand his father's motivations. (His father was very wrong for what he did to shigaraki, but his motivations for banning talking about heroes is understandable.) All Shigaraki felt as a young child is that his father hated him, and he didn't know why. We also need to consider that he completely mentally broke down when he accidentally killed his entire family besides his father. By the time he got to his father, he did intend to kill him, but this was not the case with the rest of his family. Also, he was completely manipulated by afo into becoming the way he did. Let's just remember that he was a very young and impressionable child. He even stated that perhaps things never would have gone this way if anyone else had reached out to help him

Chlo

there's such an interesting parallel between those two characters! eri's path is one where someone with actual good intentions reached out to save and help her. shigaraki's was the opposite. someone with very malicious intentions was the one to reach out to him. It's interesting to think about how things could have been very different for him if someone decent had reached out to him

Chlo

@botanbutton thank you for saying this!! abuse doesn't necessarily mean physical abuse. I think people tend to forget this when they thing about cases of domestic abuse. Mental and psychological abuse can be just as damaging as physical, and absolutely shouldn't be downplayed just because they don't leave any physical marks on someone's skin. Shigaraki's father was definitely abusive, even if the physical abuse was not a common occurrence.

kiria

I will note that if you think Shigaraki's backstory it isn't as tragic as maybe expected it does get worse lmao. Not in a very outright way but it does kinda punch you in the gut when all the pieces fall into place

humbleandkindness

I don’t disagree that it happens, because it does indeed happen, a lot,, I just don’t think it could plausibly stand as fact/truth. Tamaki’s personality doesn’t match his quirk, Bakugo’s mom is just as explosive as he is with a different quirk, and if a quirk inherently changes the person who has it, it wouldn’t have really mattered who All Might gave OFA to. I think if a Quirk factor is present in a person, it could influence or emphasize certain characteristics, but I don’t think that could be held up as scientific/factual truth in universe.

Zemillion

I mean the characters appear again. Even in the Manga iirc

Zemillion

Those are their actual hands btw. I forget how AFO reconstructed them but they were real hands from his family
