So now that you’ve seen the archipelago let’s explain the name. Shabondi as said in Japanese or Sabaody in the Roman alphabet, the Shabon/Sabao part means ‘soap’ in the respective languages and then we have ‘dy’ added to it. So the name this place is called pretty much translates as the ‘Soapy Archipelago’, referencing the soapy like resin the island emits to make the bubbles. Pretty fitting and cool huh?😅🔥

With how far you guys are into the show, I'm glad you can tell that One Piece has a few major themes in the story and the main one is how oppressive the world government is. Skypeia was about colonialism and displacement, Alabasta was about rebelling against Tyrants who occupied their land, Drum Island being about universal healthcare, Ohara (Robin's homeland) being a genocide, the world government being corrupt (and the navy following them) and world nobles who think as themselves above humans, and now we're going into more topics like human trafficking and slavery. One Piece is political and was intended to be political by Oda and it's my favorite thing about the show. A comparison I just thought of is Attack on Titan. AOT tells a story of oppression and war, while never really drawing a conclusion on what needs to be done. Whereas One Piece has a clear and effective route of what actions need to be done. That's one of the reasons I have One Piece above AOT as my number one. Love both tho with all my heart ❤️🥺 I can't wait for you guys to get more into this arc!!!!!!! One of my faves

What both AOT and One Piece do well is they communicate clearly how complex good and evil labels can be and how ordinary people get caught up inbetween no matter the sides. And displays good & evil in all categories. Both do it extremely well. With One piece it’s a bigger world with a lot more layers unpacking the complexities so it may take time to see all those moving plot points fall into place but as soon as they do it’s so grand and masterful and always has the most insane ripple effect - like everything in the world despite its huge size with so many characters and plot points- all of it ties in so perfectly - Oda is insane for pulling that off

They’re two sides of the same coin 🥀 Eren is what freedom looks like when the world denies it. Luffy is what it becomes when the world can't touch it. Eren wants freedom but Luffy is freedom. One thing tho, we shouldn’t claim oda intended one piece to be political in the sense that it’s a 1:1 allegory of how u should see the politics or how u should think. The themes are universal and designed to be relatable and inspiring and are echoed and inspired by history as with every story. So it shouldn’t be taken as a political statement it otherwise that would be dividing an audience. Like with attack on titan, theirs politics in that too, but with inspiration from world events and history etc but not a political statement u know

Yea that’s so true when you frame it like that, luffy really is the embodiment of freedom and carries that unifying rythym. He’s always in the present moment and has that infectious ability to turn anyone into a friend without caring where they are from.

Regarding the intro, yeah I kinda fell out of cinema gek. The current shows are just not for me is all. The recent kdramas I find either too cringe, or too much about bullying/misery to the point watching isn't a good experience. Show that I'm currently keeping up with is Dexter resurrection, in case you're looking for a recommendation. (Though still check in for Naruto and One piece from time to time! 😇 Also, Sabaody top 2 arc for sure! Oh and for anime recommendation, can't wait for My hero to end, and steins gate to win... well one can hope.)

I do disagree tho on saying we shouldn’t be claiming it being political. And I don’t believe saying that will be dividing an audience, it should be bringing everyone together and realizing real world issues we have. For example like how recently Indonesian citizens have started raising the strawhat flag as a symbol of protest against the government. I firmly believe Oda intended for the story to be political since the beginning. I believe the more Oda started to world build and add more characters, he got more into depth with real world problems. The first arc of the series is Luffy recruiting a crewmate by beating up a military leader who was abusing his power. It’s one of the only anime that touches on practically EVERY political topic, I can't think of a single arc that doesn't revolve around a social or political issue. The enemy is literally the government. I think it’s really good for us to talk about these topics❤️. Like how Oda said “This is a matter of reading comprehension.”

I have mixed feelings about this arc for obvious reasons because a lot is the trenches but there’s a lot we learn and characters we’re introduced to that I love. But I’m so excited we’re here because now I can change my picture to my #1 favorite character, other than luffy. I can’t wait for even just the next 10 episodes.

One Piece is political af: - People: (Blackbeard, Captain John (in thriller bark, Long John Silver) - Pop culture references: (Franky -> Ace Ventura, Chopper -> Rudolph, Usopp -> Pinocchio the Boy who cried wolf) - Social inequality: (Alabasta -> deep state/natural resource control, Drum Island -> healthcare consolidation, Skypiea -> religious hysteria and territorial/nation border dispute, Enies Lobby -> skewed judicial system, Ohara -> various book burnings/censorship/propaganda, Sabaody -> human trade/racism) - Void century: similar to Medieval Times and the gaps in history where nothing was recorded

Fun fact: Oda has said that the scene at 17:21, of Robin touching the resin and wiping it on Ussop’s shorts, is his 2nd favourite moment in the entirety of one piece. Apparently, his reason is “it lends his world a feeling of realism”. This was back around in 2020, when there was about 1000 chapters of one piece published. The manga is currently on chapter 1158.😂

Like how some claim to know exactly what he’s trying to say about specific political issues through OP which isn’t fair on Oda & is a disservice to his work by dragging it into real world politics. We can’t be sure that’s ever his intentions unless he declares it as a statement of fact, regardless how strongly we may feel & the choices of other people to use the story for whatever cause they want. Otherwise it’s hastily assigning intentions based on pure beliefs that have never been confirmed by the creator which may not account for other nuances. Not sure if this was the intentional design, but Zoro's lack of direction kinda ties back to his identity as a character. His dream is to become the world's greatest swordsman by beating/competing with his childhood rival Kuina. She dies. No more distinct direction now other than follow Luffy. Zoro has a goal, but no clear guidance. Might be a reach, but that's the vibe I've picked up.

I’m lost on what you’re trying to say tbh. It’s not a disservice to his work by bringing in world politics bc the story’s main theme is literally about world issues/politics. I think it’s an insult to Oda for his readers to say it’s not political. The story is 100% allegorical to the real world. Like how Oda said “This is a matter of reading comprehension”. As an author, I think it’s a compliment when readers go into more depth on the themes the author provides in the story. Oda involving things such as colonialism, racism, slavery, human trade, oppression, liberation, and making the world government the enemy IS intentional. I think Oda loves that his work has influenced countries/people to go against the government like Indonesia. Politics fundamentally cannot be separated from the one piece story. Where i think OP excels in is having a lower threshold for a point of entry for readers, as a shounen manga it allows a younger audience to be exposed to these themes in an accessible and easier to digest way so as they grow into adults they recognize those themes in the adult world

This is going to be a reach, but the bubbles, bubbles popping outside of specific conditions, and tourism feels like some kinda take on economic bubbles. Probably not true but history and One Piece is interesting. Context: economic bubbles including the 1630s Dutch tulip bubble, 1920s easy credit -> Great Depression bubble, 2000s DotCom bubble, 2008 mortgage backed security housing bubble, and the current potential AI bubble.

My top 5 consists of 3 arcs from this saga, Sabaody being no. 2. No. 3&4 are in post timeskip though. Just so much good stuff in this stretch of story that ring out across the narrative for the rest of the series. Amongst just having great moments isolated to this saga.

i wouldn't say the archipelago is inherently bad, you have to consider a few factors that contributes to attracting horrible people. for one it grabbed the celestial dragons attention, and since they love their slaves so much, slave trade became the hottest thing in town. and since this is the first half of the grandline and also a gateway to the second half, it's a place where all the pirates go through, so it's like a honey trap and bounty hunters can make a a quick buck by lying in wait there. not to mention hundreds of years of racism that they cant fix because of the racist rats that go there all the time (slave traders and celestial dragons)

as someone who grew up on secret garden, coffee prince, you’re beautiful, love rain and the likes and grew tired of them and i also thought they were cringe like you, i can safely tell you today’s dramas hit different. they branched out from the romcom cringe mold they’re more diverse now with higher budgets and really cool cinematography. the geks already covered some really good ones if you want a taster for today’s kdramas: - all of us are dead (zombies) - the glory (revenge story) - weak hero (PEAK high school/gang drama) - squid game (you’ve heard of it) my personal recommendations: - kingdom (historical zombie PEAK drama) - strangers from hell (disturbing psychological drama) if these dont get you into kdramas i guess they’re not for you but i bet you’d enjoy them

We saw dragon’s face in logue town yes. They even showed his face again during drum island in Dolton’s flashback, which was around episode 80 something, and that time it was full head profile with no hood . So nah there was no crazy foreshadowing with the first opening

-I’ve seen trailers for squid game. The acting looks overdone, exaggerated, and every hut thing screams TikTok to me so I don’t like it lol. It’s also a tired old genre in manga and maybe only new for Americans? -I’ve also seen some clips of all of us are dead. I am NOT a fan of shows (American or Korean) that focus on teenage protagonists. It also feels very try hard. -Weak hero? I’ve read some of the webtoon. Again, not interested and especially not in stories taking place in the Korean school system. I’ve read stuff like lookism and a lot of webtoons, and I’m just not interested in that environment or story telling anymore. -Kingdom? Yep, watched a couple of episodes (2-3) a really long time ago but that’s about it. I’m just not interested in going back to Korean dramas because in all honesty, the stories don’t excite me and neither does the acting. And I grew up on those other shows you described too. So I don’t like it because I haven’t seen them, I have seen them (probably more than you) and it’s just not something I like.

I don’t think the order would make a huge difference for them, but honestly I feel like it would hit even harder if watched immediately after these events. When I watched in order, the earlier parts didn’t feel as significant compared to everything that happened in the following arcs. that’s very fair! i thought the last exposure you had was back in middle school. shame you couldn’t finish kingdom though, it’s very well directed probably my favorite out of this list even though i was never interested in zombies to begin with. (also i watched way more than what i listed i just dropped what i thought would interest you since those are usually the go-to list to introduce someone into kdramas) i liked squid game only for season 1. season 2 was a nothing burger to me and relied heavy on the conclusion of the unnecessary season 3 which flopped for me personally

I'm not joking when I say, this is probably my fave arc of One Piece. Or at least the first one I truly see as peak. I really really enjoyed everything from Alabasta to Enies Lobby, with increasing hype, but this is the arc I was like... wtf... this is so good. I became a fan at that point probably without realising. And what makes it better is the show builds on this feeling. I would say, this is the arc that added a sense of realism to the grand storyline of One Piece. A sense of realism that no anime I've seen can match.
