The name has at least 3 meanings so its definitely is a bit of a attack on titan situation but the english title is straight up not a translation but a rewrite in the first place. The meaning is ambiguous on purpose so they opted to not translate it and make it worse. I'd say the closest translation would be sth like "Frieren the Undertaker" since it's supposed to refer to Himmel's funeral, Frieren the Slayer and her outliving pretty much everyone else.

@Carter Honestly, it doesn't excel in anything compared to other shows in that season, nothing flashy, very mellow and comfy. It came in a time when people felt burnout from all the action go-go-go and this show stood out in its opposite approach and became a hidden gem among the anime community for a bit until it wasnt so hidden, its just a very nicely paced adventure with retrospective qualities that people can resonate with. The plot does become more complex since reading the manga but nothing like a popular shounen.

Sorry, I don’t want you to misinterpret me. I was referring to people who were kinda of belittling how people were feeling in the last comment section. And I feel like they view people expressing as hate or saying things like “someone with a brain would only understand” for example. So, I think sometimes certain people genuinely view people expressing as an attack when you can tell it’s not. It’s kinda of like kpop fandom for example. You can’t say one criticism about an idol without a fan seeing it as an attack and would defend the idol like there’s no tomorrow 😭 They fail to see that the criticism is coming from a place of care/love. I had the exact same reaction as you guys, watching these episodes. Frieren instantly turned into my fav character. It's so rare to see women in anime aura farm. In any other shounen (battle) anime you would have Stark fighting against Lügner, but the fact that Lügner was like 'Nah, I will need to handle Fern' is so cool.

Its a great adaptation with a cool world and great animation. But I'm gonna be real with ya, with someone who's fully caught up and will even continue the story. The "redemption" aspect is a crock of shit lol he gets rewarded for his awful behavior and mistakes constantly. The only thing he improved was his confidence and learned to appreciate his family more than he used to, but he is still exactly the same horrible human being he always was. The fantasy aspect of the show is amazing, but the main character and his supposed redemption journey is horrendously done. His "antics" is exactly what he should have been redeeming, but the show/author doesn't look at his pedo tendencies and sexual harassment/assault as something bad, so no need for it to be redeemed. Re Zero does that character journey 100x better in every aspect there is, hands down. There are parts they will appreciate about it, like the fantasy, but they're going to be wildly uncomfortable about the main character and what he constantly is doing. And there will be many viewers uncomfortable as well, it's hard to recommend.

@Zess very much agree. his “antics” and flaws that people say he grows and redeems himself from aren’t treated like serious issues in the actual narrative and are never condemned in the show, instead they’re written to be comedic. for some reason fans constantly mention his character development when these things (being a pedo, assault) are brought up while his character development doesn’t actually address them

I love that this show names their characters with german words that fit the character. The demon with the wire/rope : Draht (german word for wire). Lügner = german word for lier. XD . Frieren = german for "being cold/freezing. Stark = strong, Himmel = Sky , Fern = far away, Heiter = cheerful, Eisen = Steel , Flamme = Flame, Qual = agony,

Sousou itself has two meanings. It can mean "funeral rites/ attending a funeral" and also "sending to the grave." So it has a double translation. It can mean Frieren the Slayer or Frieren at the Funeral.
