Yesss another frieren reaction!! The thing about ya'll watching frieren is that not only are your guys' reactions are peak, the discussion after is what makes me so excited for frieren reactions. The predictions are so good and your takes on certain topics/scenes are such good insights. I'll just say that there's a reason the show has been talking about the exams so much in previous episodes is because it's the longest arc by far in my opinion. There's three segments/exams if you were curious. Anyways, really happy it's finally the exam arc and really hoping ya'll enjoy this part of the journey! Hyped for the next one!

Agreed. It almost feels like a different show entirely, and I kinda wish it happened sooner. Like I enjoy the other episodes but the pacing was slow and almost feels boring compared to this last batch of episodes. I hope season 2 is more of this pace and arc.

yeah 2nd season will be torture with it being once a week. 😩 i think madhouse might cook even more because they didn't even really expect Frieren to take off like it did, and now they probably got a higher budget this time because of the success. The animators and the composer gave this show a lot of love and attention bringing the world to life especially in the beginning. There are key moments where I know they'll just have to take it up that notch and I'm so impatient. 😭

There’s 3 exams for first class mages. The ones that could take the first class mage exam are most cases already strong mages - it’s just there are so many aspects about magic that differ from person to person. Some are great at the flashy attack spells, some are good at mana detection or reading someone’s mana and also hiding mana, some don’t have enough mana or have a lot… so a really crazy strong mage is good in all of those - which takes a long time and heck lot of training to master.

Spells need to be collected, we saw that a lot with Frieren where she has a hobby of collecting many spells. Not everyone will have a spell that capable of catching a Stilie. It is also specifically mentioned that Stilie has almost no mana so its almost impossible to detect it. It may even come down to luck to even encounter one. Hence, stealing others is another possible solution of clearing a test. Besides, you need to be strong to be first class mage, so what the point if they cant even secure their own captured Stilie? It also helps weed out the number of parties clearing the test. Also what if they are lesser Stilies placed in the exam area compared to number of parties participating? They are being tested together for a reason so it really isnt underhanded to attempt to steal it from others. Everyone knew what they signed up for.

I think spells can be created because we know Flamme did, I assume it takes a long time to create spells? Like how certain mages have specific types of magic they excel at or have an affinity for. Then maybe the process of infusing them into a tome takes a long time? That’s my guess anyway,

I think its either you find it/learn an existing spell or you study magic fundamentals like crazy and create your own. One of the good things about Frieren is that more you watch it the more you'll get answers to these types of questions~ the unraveling of it is tied to the beat of the storyline.

Spellcrafting in Frieren seems to rely on understanding the fundamemtal mechanics behind the spells and how to manifest them. While someone can become very good at weilding those spells, it may not mean that they understand how to manifest them. Same way that most people who drive a car or use a smartphone don't have a deep understanding of how either of those things really function.

My favorite part about this arc isn’t just how we meet so many new characters, but rather that we finally get a new comparison point for Fern against other mages. It’s so difficult to tell how talented fern is because she is always within frieren’s comparative shadow. Fern even struggled so much that it was mentioned as her personal complex in her fight against Lugner. The author is really good at keeping every character so nonchalant and unrevealing of how they feel in a fight or at any given important moment and then showing us later what was happening, and I can’t wait to see how yall continue reacting to the rest of this show!!

LETS GOOOOO LETS GOOOOOOO EXAM ARC!!! this is by far my favorite arc in s1 and its just such a refreshing change of pace. we get introduced to a lot of new and unique characters, and it also gives us a loottt more insight on mages and the different types of magic. do not sleep on any of these new characters

I really don’t think Frieren is just holding back at all times and can solo that challenge. It’s a challenge that’s hard even for powerful mages because you need a lot of different tools or hyper-specific tools to catch one easily. A lot of it is also luck just encountering one.

That is often the point of exam arcs in anime. Its to show of how strong the main cast is compared to the rest of the world. It is also favorite part of many of the anime i watch.

I agree. I think the difference is just combat vs utility vs circumstances. Do I think she’s strong enough to beat 99 percent of mages in combat? Yes, but like she even said there are exceptions since she lost 11 times. I also think her massive spell pool gives her a ton of utility that almost all of mages don’t have. But as shown by this test, she DID in fact need the help of Lawine and the other girl to capture the still. Maybe not planting mana in the water, but definitely freezing the lake as a misdirect. The circumstances called for cooperation, which is why I don’t think she could have completed the test by herself. Yes she could have gotten lucky, but I think the point of showcasing her group was to show, that with the right tools, which Frieren MIGHT not always have, you don’t have to just be lucky.

4:27 what Cannon said here reminds me of a quote from a game I've played "Reflect through the long night, wait for the dawn as you think, then set off at daybreak. The hesitant part of us will be left behind in the dark, while the determined side of us will know no fear" I think it's such a beautiful quote that can genuinely help you get over your fear of the future, at least it did for me, giving yourself time to reflect on your fear but then also giving yourself a set time or a few words to be your trigger to throw the fear to the side really helps you face things head on
