Bon Clay has to be one of the most loyal underdogs in the entire series. Definitely in my top 5 . His devotion to Luffy is genuinely on par with any Straw Hat. Luffy’s suffering becomes even more powerful when you look at the juxtaposition between their struggles, with Luffy battling the raw, physical agony of Magellan’s poison while Bon suffers the mental torment of hearing his friend scream and being unable to intervene. Time and the resilience of the human spirit being the only thing that could take both of them out of their respective torment. That contrast and with Ivan’s whole speech layered on top of it, it becomes one of the most underrated pieces of storytelling Oda has ever written.

45:44: nah sorry to break it to you Carter but McKay is right in his instincts and they aren’t dangling because they are super important they are dangling cause it’s just filler. They have their role but it should be noted that all those scenes with them this episode was filler and much of their appearances and extra moments in episodes are also filler. Some ppl enjoy unserious characters while others like myself and McKay prefer to stick to the main thing. Hence why I suggest use one pace which would of cut out 16 episodes worth of mediocrity 🤷‍♂️🥱

FACT: Ivan will use their powers to turn Zoro into a girl to fulfill tashigi’s dream that a woman can become the strongest swordsman. Then Sanji will see mosshead, make up their differences, and they will fall in love. Zoro is the power bottom and will give birth to two of Sanji’s kids. Oda foreshadowing is too insane.

We shall revisit this statement in 80 episodes 😎 But for real, this 150 ep run really started the moment Kuma faced off against the Strawhats on Thriller Bark (ep 375). Since then Oda has been cooking greatness (Kuma/Nothing Happened, Brook's Backstory, Sabaody, Amazon Lily). Level 1-3 of Impel Down is the weakest part of these 150 eps, but the very very best is yet to come (and there's a lot of it). Have faith in Oda 👨‍🍳

it's only really McKay hating that filler right now, which is understandable. Not saying anyone else there loves it, but look at Cannon. He genuinely probably doesn't mind these light hearted bits because of how depressing it's felt recently. Anyway it's sort of onwards and upwards from now on. It was already good but it gets better. They will enjoy it I think. They won't even think about One Pace unless commenters force them to imo.

I kinda understand it tbf I was the same when I first watched. Think about it, the stakes are so high with luffy and ace, the end of amazon lily built up so much hype; but then half the arc so far is filled with characters and gags that take you away from the luffy plot. I love buggy and mr 3 but I remember thinking when I first watched this arc "just show me luffy or scenes related to the ace plot." I love one piece and the relationships it makes you build with all these cool and funny characters, but I can definitely see why it's frustrating in this context given what the main plot is in this saga and how drawn out it feels

Watch them rate impel down the same as thriller bark lmao. I knew they wouldn’t like the first half of this arc because the pacing is bad and toei adds unnecessary gags, very drawn out scenes and unnecessary filler. I know there are impel down glazers but the first half of this arc would’ve been 10x better in one pace, nothing is lost. Some arcs especially down the line are outright unwatchable with normal pace, hopefully those arcs get the justice they deserve. Balancing one pace and toei piece is the better way to do it for new watchers. Just a suggestion as along time watcher who gets many people into one piece.

lol his expectations were high. Some people hyped up the next 180 or so episodes since Sabaody because they were already foreseeing Marineford. And Sabaody was so good, he probably expected Impel Down to be at that level, but it was a let down instead. That’s my best guess at least. I remember one comment saying “it’s straight gas from here” and thinking to myself that I never felt that way about Amazon Lily and Impel Down. I enjoyed these arcs, but not to that extent. They’re not in my top 10 in any case.

Nothing really peak is coming except that one bon clay moment. Impel down is just to hype up marinford and the whole arc is basically a cat and mouse game and its unsatisfying, and the pacing is dogshit. Thankfully the worst parts of the arc is over. Thriller bark at least had nothing happened and the brook backstory. So yea both arcs are kinda mid. Just glad impel down is not as long as thriller bark.

I’m surprised, I’ve never really seen hate for impel down, on either the anime nor manga. Since Sabaody we’ve been on a generational run. I’ve seen so many memes of the burning horse or someone writing and the pen’s on fire and it’s titled “Oda when he was writing sabaody ➡️ impel down ➡️ Marineford”😭😭 I completely understand pacing issues but there has already been so much good stuff and a lot of progress: - We got Boa and Luffy infiltrating (cute moment between them) - Luffy and Buggy reunited and their duo is too good - Mr. 3 got added and later Buggy and him formed an alliance to escape - Boa met with Ace - Bon Clay reunite with Luffy and it’s one of the best friendships - We got introduced to Jimbei - We learned Shanks encountered with Kaido - Buggy and Mr. 3 have their lil side quest of escaping while struggling - Luffy fights with Magellan and we get to see how much of a problem Magellan is - Luffy is on the verge of death but Bon Clay saves - We see conquerors haki again since that last time it happened was Amazon lily - We met Ivankov, the Queen of New Kama Land, the “miracle worker” that Bon Clay worships and this relates back to Sanji - Luffy losing 10 years of his life just to fight against the poison - We get to see what Ivankov can do HEEHAW - And we’re now in level 5.5 and were literally soo close to Ace We’re already been in the good bits since the get-go. I understand pacing but it’s not terrible and neither the content. Now this second half …. is where the peaks getting even better 😁

The filler is holding them back from enjoying the good parts. The more interesting story moments are further apart because of the filler and makes it less engaging for them. I enjoyed some of the comedic filler with Bon Clay and Buggy but I also binged this arc. That's why people said to one pace this arc, the boys are only watching 4 eps a week, so it's more frustrating if the story doesn't really move along

At this point we’re 14 episodes into the arc and they’re in level 5.5 almost at the last floor of impel down and about halfway through the arc I get people want them to clear a floor each episode but yall gotta keep in mind this is a weekly anime this was dropping every week for years compared to the shows yall say have good pacing those shows are dropping a season every 2-3 years so they can afford to pace everything fast

I never got the appeal of impel down when people say it's a top arc. Not sure if they're lumping it in with Marineford. A handful of great moments in impel down but otherwise a forgettable transition arc to me (I skip around for peak moments when watching the reaction).

I lowkey judge how reactors react to iva chan. he’s an absolute outrageous character but he’s the best esp as you watch more. like oda definitely is not perfect with his portrayal of trans and lgbtq+ people but he was way ahead of his time considering this was back in early 2000s. gotta give him his flowers for that and especially considering how much he’s learned from his mistakes
