The Duffers brothers have stated that Stranger Things 5 is gonna discuss Will and his struggles. They also said that Stranger Things is a coming-of-age show despite the monsters and the epic battles. Which means that they'll have time to focus on intimate moments and relationships. So, I want to talk about Mike, Eleven, and Will's love triangle, and why I think Mike secretly being in love with Will might be a possibility for the future plot. And I want to remind everyone that this is a show about outcasts and freaks, and uplifting marginalized communities. I'll start explaining now. If you keep viewing Mike as someone who is one hundred percent straight and fully romantically in love with Eleven, then you won’t see any of the possibilities or cracks that could point to Mike and Will developing feelings. I’m honestly surprised that many people think season four was the strongest point of Mike and Eleven’s romantic relationship, and I’m going to explain why. First, at the end of season three, there’s the moment where Eleven tells Mike that she heard him say he loved her, and she wants him to repeat it. He responds with “I don’t remember, it was the heat of the moment.” I can give him the benefit of the doubt since he grew up in a household where his parents don’t express love openly, so maybe it was awkward for him. But then Eleven kisses him in front of Will’s open closet, she’s holding Will’s toy between them, and Mike keeps his eyes open the entire time. She ends the kiss smiling while he looks shocked. Many people who analyze the show see this as the moment Mike realized he might not feel the way Eleven thinks he does. The scene’s cinematography adds to that interpretation. Before this moment, we see Will (who is canonically in love with Mike) say that he won’t join another party. Mike’s reaction to Will refusing to play with another group versus his reaction to his girlfriend declaring her love is very telling. You could argue it either way: that he’s simply happy Will still wants to play with him, or that he’s just shocked by Eleven. This is the issue with this ship because nothing is certain since Mike’s sexuality has not been explicitly confirmed. What stood out to me the most in the season three finale is Mike looking back at the Byers’ house after they leave. That house is where Will lived, so it’s fair to assume he was thinking about losing him. Then he goes home and hugs his mom. When was the last time we saw him hug his mom? Season one, when Will was presumed dead. This makes it seem like he was more affected by losing Will than losing his girlfriend. Maybe it was enough for him just to have Will nearby, even if they weren’t together. Now I’ll mention all the reasons I think Mike has feelings for Will, focusing only on season four. And I’m not going to assume Mike is straight because that would be heteronormative. I’d suggest looking up what that means if you’re not familiar with it. 1- The airport scene. In the original script, Mike didn’t know Eleven’s favorite color, saying he made a 70/30 guess between yellow and purple. In the show, they made it look like both were her favorites. He also signs his letters “From, Mike,” even though she signs hers “Love, Eleven.” I get that he struggles to say it out loud, but why can’t he at least write it? 2- Will reaches for a hug, and Mike ignores it. Will clearly goes in for a hug, but Mike only taps his shoulder. If you check episode one at the timestamp 1:04:47, you can see him hugging Dustin tightly. Throughout the series, he hugs others normally after this moment, so this one stands out. You could blame it on the distance between them, but when someone reaches for a hug that openly and you deny it, it raises questions. Then he looks at the painting and asks about it. In Eleven’s letter, she mentions Will is painting something for a girl he likes, so Mike is probably confused why Will brought a painting at all. 3- Mike’s outfit. He shows up dressed in a way that doesn’t match who he is, and Argyle even calls it fake. This suggests he’s putting on a facade, which Finn Wolfhard confirmed. It feels like Mike was dreading this reunion because of how season three ended. He may have realized feelings for Will that he’s confused or conflicted about, and that his feelings for Eleven aren’t romantic in the way she thinks. 4- At Rink O Mania. Eleven pushes Mike to do things that typical couples do, things he wouldn’t initiate himself. This isn’t necessarily bad, but it shows that they don’t share many interests. Their connection is mostly trauma and history. Meanwhile, Will is an illustrator, and Mike wants to be a comic book writer. Their personalities and interests match more naturally. 5- Mike doesn’t notice Eleven’s distress, but he notices Will’s. Eleven is visibly upset, stuttering, and being bullied in front of him, and he doesn’t react. Will gets up to check on her while Mike just sits there. But he does notice Will rolling his eyes and looking upset. He’s paying attention to Will but not his girlfriend. 6- “What about us?” When Will asks this, Mike immediately responds with “We’re friends. We are friends!” and the track titled “In the Closet” plays. Will was talking about their friendship, but Mike seems to assume something more. Mike admits he should have reached out more, and that’s true. He couldn’t call much because of government surveillance, but we know from Dustin and Max that Mike did try calling, but Joyce kept the line busy with her telemarketing job. That’s why Will exaggerates that Mike called “a couple times” when it had been about seven or eight months. Joyce once said love can slow or speed up time, which connects to how Mike describes it feeling like a year. 7- Mike guilt trips Eleven. After Eleven hits Angela, Mike’s reaction is to guilt trip her instead of comforting her. The show even parallels him to Papa in that scene. Before this, Eleven tried to convince her bullies to lie to Mike to make it look like she had friends instead of telling him the truth. That shows how insecure she feels. During the dinner table scene, Mike says “She didn’t look fine” in an annoyed tone, which hurts Eleven. Why is he feeling bad for her bully instead of checking on her? 8- The next morning. Eleven tells Mike she feels like a monster and thinks he sees her that way too. He says he never thought that, but in season one he repeatedly yelled “What is wrong with you?” at her. She brings up the fact that he can’t say “I love you.” She says “From Mike” over and over because she’s frustrated. Instead of addressing the problem, Mike tells her she’s being ridiculous and claims he does say it even though he doesn’t. When she asks him to say it now, he tells her “I care about you so much.” Caring about someone can be part of love, but using it instead of “I love you” makes it sound like he’s avoiding the truth. Her response, “Care? But you don’t love me?” is completely understandable. Then compare this to Mike’s conversation with Will. Mike apologizes, saying he was being a self pitying idiot, and Will says “I didn’t say that.” Mike replies “You didn’t have to.” With Eleven he gaslights her by saying “I do say it,” but with Will he says “You didn’t have to,” as if he understands him perfectly. Mike tells Will he doesn’t need to apologize and that he was always right. There’s a level of emotional connection and maturity here that he never shows with Eleven. 9- Mike goes on to say that everyone in Hawkins is great, but “it’s not the same without you,” and that he was so worried about Eleven he might have lost Will. Imagine Lucas saying that to Dustin, or Dustin saying it to Steve. It wouldn’t fit. He also says “the last year has been weird,” even though it was only seven or eight months. This connects back to Joyce’s comment about love affecting how time feels. If it felt like a year to him, maybe it’s because he missed Will. 10- Mike throws away what could have been Eleven’s last letter while sitting on Will’s bed. 11- In the junkyard, Will stares at Mike while he’s digging, and Mike looks back at him three times. That wasn’t accidental. It was either in the script or directed that way. Small details like this matter. I suggest googling what looking back at someone 3 times means. 12- The fact that Mike and Will had no scenes together in episode seven feels intentional. In season one episode one, Will tells Mike he rolled a seven and didn’t lie about it, which showed how special their bond was. Now there are hints that season five episode seven will dive into their relationship. They even hired child actors for younger versions of Mike and Will for flashbacks. I think Eleven will be the one who sees it. 13- The painting scene. Mike’s facial expressions throughout this moment are so important. Those three minutes took twelve hours to film. They wouldn’t spend that much time on something meaningless. Will lies and says the painting was Eleven’s idea. Mike’s smile fades immediately. We know Mike loves Will’s drawings. He kept a binder of them and even caressed them when he thought Will died. Mike looks genuinely happy until Will says Eleven asked for it, which could make Mike believe that Will doesn’t like him that way. It could make him think Will wants him to be with Eleven, giving him more motivation to believe in their relationship. 14- They parallel Mike, Will, and Eleven with Robin, Vickie, and Vickie’s boyfriend. The scenes mirror each other within the same episodes. Look at Robin between Vickie and her boyfriend in the gun shop, then look at Will standing between Mike and Eleven when they touch foreheads in the desert. 15- The fruit on pizza scene. They keep saying “Try before you deny,” and Mike acts disgusted at first. Then he tries it and says “It’s actually good.” The word “fruity” has a well known meaning, and while this is light and comedic, it’s still worth thinking about. It may seem silly, but I wanted to include it. 16- Mike needs Will to tell him “You’re the heart” before he can tell Eleven he loves her. Then the track “You Are the Heart” plays, which refers to what Will said, not something from Eleven. Mike starts his speech by saying he loved her since he first saw her in the woods and loved her every day since. But there are flaws here. How could he love her at first sight when they thought she was a boy? He also said in season one that he would send her back to Pennhurst after they found Will. He yelled “What is wrong with you?” at her multiple times. He only started loving her again after she used Will’s voice over the walkie talkie. And when he says he loves her on her good and bad days, his reaction to her being bullied and his behavior at the dinner table do not reflect love. Some people even pointed out that Mike’s speech sounds like a mix of Eddie’s words and Will’s disguised confession. 17- What really convinced me is that his confession didn’t save them. They still lost Max. When Eleven revives Max, the show flashes back to Max telling her “Not Hopper, not Mike, you,” and then “There’s more to life than stupid boys.” Putting that right after the big confession wasn’t an accident. It hints at Eleven’s independence arc. How can you put a twelve year old girl who escaped a lab, who barely knew how to speak, into a long term romantic relationship with a boy who grew up freely? Eleven needs time to grow, and even Millie Bobby Brown has said this. 18- On the thirty hour drive home, after Mike finally tells Eleven what she’s been wanting to hear, she ignores him. Will asks if she talked to him, and Mike says “Not much… I mean a little,” which is understandable because she just saw her best friend die. Then Mike comforts Will the same way he did in season two, saying they’ll fight together as a team. With Eleven, he calls her a hero and pushes her to fight. He puts her on a pedestal, just like she puts him on one. 19- In the very last scene, Mike and Will are paired together between two confirmed couples. Eleven walks past them toward the storm, then kneels down and picks up dead flowers, the same flowers Mike gave her at the airport. Every Stranger Things finale foreshadows the next season. I think that specific shot hints that Mike and Eleven’s romantic relationship will end, and that Mike and Will might realize their feelings for each other. There are even more examples from earlier seasons, and I didn’t include things like set design, lighting, or costume analysis. That’s why I recommend watching the videos by Ronald Off the Record. At the end of the day, this is just my opinion. The final decision is up to the Duffers, so neither of us can say with certainty who will end up together. Maybe none of these possibilities will happen. I just think it’s dismissive when someone shares detailed reasons for why they see a possibility and they’re immediately called delusional or told “this isn’t happening.” The truth is, none of us know for sure. You could watch something a million times and not realize because of how you view it, it’s prospective. Most people are programmed to watch it from heteronormative prospective. And if you’re talking about the clip of David Harbor saying it won’t happen, I want to remind you that this was before he received season 4 full scripts. He isn’t a writer or in the writers room. He also said in the same clip “idk but I don’t think” implying he has no knowledge. He also lied about Hopper being 100% dead before. If you didn’t see it on your watches, I get it. I didn’t see it on my first watch either but I still felt weird about it. I suggest you watch Ronald Off the Record two part video analysis about it.

I think you're stretching things quite abit. Mike is just love sick teen, who's awkward, and insecure about his relationship with El. Mike loves Eleven, he's definitely not gay or secretly in love with Will too. I get how you have sort of seen some signs in that way but think you're completely off with this Mike theory. Even Will his best friend knows his love is unrequited & knows Mike the best since he's Will's oldest friend. (meeting at the swings in Kindergarten) Will confessing his love secretly this season also showed how much Mike feels/loves El, he's terrified of losing her & feels for Eleven, what Will feels for Mike. Will's speech in the car would have been the perfect time for us to see if Mike felt anything at all for Will besides friendship. Mike showed no signs unlike poor Will.

But Chantelle, if this wasn't so important they would've ended it in season 4, including the painting lie. The fact that they stretched it to season 5 is enough to show you that it's still gonna play out. No one writes a slow burn rejection, especially not a show about uplifting outcasts where the gay kids gets horribly treated since season 1. I do admit that it's all ambiguous, but that's the problem. It should not be ambiguous or left for interpretation. They're either queerbaiting the viewers or building it up. You should not be denying or confirming something until all is done in season 5. People are so quick to shut this down because they assume Mike is straight which we don't know. Also if Will was a girl, no one would've spoken against it.

I just think that Mike and eleven has been THE couple relationship for the show (maybe you could say Jonathan and Nancy), mostly cause eleven is the main character so if they were to switch that up in the final season with, to me, seemingly almost no true meaningful build up to Mike being gay or bi it’d be a little weird. I agree, it should be organic if it happens. I don't think they'll just make Mike break up with Eleven to be with Will, that wouldn't make sense. Also the writers said that they made Will's ending so organic, so I assume everything else would be. About them being THEE main couple, I don't think that's enough of a reason for them to be together till the end. Eleven got with Mike when she was 12, barely spoke, and had no childhood. There was an imbalance since the beginning. I hope they give her an independent arc at the last season. Mike said he wants someone who needs him, and Eleven wants someone who loves her. But I don't think Eleven needs Mike, which is what he wants. Don't worry, they'll definitely make it organic if it would happen. I said would because we still don't know what's gonna happen at all.

the lucas and max scenes are so gut wrenching but DAMN they stepped up this season, their acting was phenomenal. I loved the conversation with Jonathon and Will. Hopper and El reunited had me in a wreck!!! Their father and daughter bond is one of my favorite things in the show!!! While Steve has had such an incredible character arch that doesn’t mean his reward should be endgame with Nancy. Rewatch season one when she explains “I don’t think my parents ever loved each other , she questioned what her mom saw in her dad, she basically explained STEVE. i do agree that will’s actor wasn’t as good in s4. i do think it has something to do with his not getting much to work with. i actually feel the same way about mike and even eleven in this season - as in a lot of not great/bland delivery - and i think the california plot in general just wasn’t well done and that contributed to it? and a lot of the lines they were given didn’t help in that regard. i understand he can still make the best of what he’s given even with not much screentime like he did in s1 but at the same time i think he shines the most when he’s given A Lot to do and s5 i know 1.) he’ll have a really big part and 2.) he got an acting coach for s5 (to prepare for that most likely). so hoping he’ll prove us wrong and be at the level he was in s2 because that is imo the best acting performance of the show at least in regards to the kids

In my opinion 1>4>2>3. I liked season 4 but so many things bugged me. I hated how they tried to make Stancy be a thing again, there’s literally no point in doing this, doesn’t add anything good to the series. I love Nancy and I don’t want her character development to be based on whether she should go back to her ex or not. They could’ve developed her and Johnathan’s relationship issues without trying to involve Steve in it. Also they butchered Johnathan’s character, he was so much better during season 1 and 2, and honestly they could’ve developed his entire “drug” plot better than the funny tone they gave it… Another thing and I know this is really debated, but Robin’s character kinda fell of in my opinion, I know that she has all this PTSD and stuff that obviously increased her anxiety etc, but the presence she had in season 3 is gone and I don’t like how almost every time she would get anxious it felt like a very awkward script. The California plot was a snooze fest, but I understand because obviously they didn’t have much to do. I liked the Russia plot better this season but again, it felt almost very out of touch compared to the rest. Concerning Will and Mike, since we already kind of know next season is really going to be centered around Will since that’s where it all started, in MY OPINION they won’t try to develop a new relationship between Mike and him, but rather use the fact that he loves Mike as a character development for him and give it a much greater significance, rather than creating a romantic relationship. For me it would feel very flat to do an entire switch up and make Will and Mike a couple in the last season when honestly this idea mainly emerged in season 4. Plus, I think there’s way more things to worry about rather than if they’re gonna get together, but that’s just me. But overall it’s still an amazing season and honestly I loved it.

Eddie being at peace and accepting his end while Max was scared, not ready, and begging to not die was such a heartbreaking contrast 🥺 I'm thinking that Max actually did die but because of El, she got her body to live on. So if there is a chance for Max to come back, her body will at least be there for her to return to. For now though, she's "brain dead" in the sense that her mind isn't there. As Papa said, when One kills, he consumes everything that person is and will be. Max is with Vecna now. I don't know how exactly they'll save Max though, like if just killing Vecna will release her? There is a theory that Alice Creel, Henry's sister is Karen Wheeler. Her maiden name is Childress which is an interesting choice. Childress is a variation of the name Childers derived from location name meaning "children's house" or orphanage. They showed us Virginia Creel fully dying, they showed us what Henry showed to his father, but they didn't show us how he killed his sister Alice. Like what kind of trauma would a little innocent girl have for him to kill her with? Also in the posters for Stranger Things 4, they show each of the main characters with a location behind them. The Duffers have confirmed that what Will saw that day was a demogorgon and not Vecna, Vecna wasn't even designed back then. People are saying that Eleven was the one that opened the door lock. She was either trying to help Will, or tried to lead the demogorgon to him instead of her. In season 2 when Eleven visits her mother, they show us Eleven opening the door lock the same way in episode 1 of season 1. I agree this is Mike season and the only one left to get that character Arch, and in doing that the duffer brothers are focusing on him more this season and giving us the s1 and s2 Mike back we loved. The leader, the protective Mike which means he will support Will coming out and accepting him for who he is and reassuring him that they will always be best friends. Can’t see Mike being with anyone in this entire series aside from el. From ep1 he’s been crazy about her, no other build up for him to like anyone else let alone be gay. It’s just not his character. I think the best actors in this show were Jamie (Vecna), Dacre (Billy) and Joseph (Eddie) in that order. From "the kids" I'd say Sadie (Max) was the best. Noah's (Will) emotional acting felt completely same in three different scenes this season. It was like the scenes were copies of each other. Don't know his real name but shout out to Jason's actor too. He had 4th most aura in the show. All the main adult actors were really solid also. I think Finn (Mike) was acting better in "It" than anywhere in this whole show.

I think Jonathan's character in general is a let down. I think they didnt know what to do with him and just had him being high. So i totally understand people wanting Nancy to be with someone like Steve, who actually does more. But again, Steve deserves better. Nancy has always been very ambitious and career driven, and Steve very clearly wants the family life, they're just not compatible I'm sorry. Maybe if they had wrote them differently this season I could see them getting back together but instead Steve just talked about himself to her?
