If the magic association were to have held Übel responsible for killing the proctor, they would also have to hold themselves responsible for the deaths of any test-taker that had died from any of their tests as well. The test takers go into it with the knowledge and acceptance that they may die as a result, so for a proctor to put himself quite literally in the middle of a test involving offensive magic, he also should’ve accepted that.

Yeah. Killing proctors gets you disqualified because they administer the tests. That is pretty much it. Serie intentionally made the exams brutal to fit her standards and many mages are killed in them, either by beasts, or by other mages.

1. When Frieren tells Fern that she'll focus on defense and that "it won't be fatal," she's not referring to herself thinking she will be hit, she's referring to what the mimic did and how what it does to Fern won't be fatal to Fern. The mimic pushing Fern away is the opening Frieren planned for since it leaves her completely open to attack, so Frieren was basically just reassuring Fern that mimic Frieren wasn't about to kill her, lol. 2. On Ubel - she's basically a natural talent who goes completely off of feel. Magic isn't a system of principles and rules that dictate how and what is possible, it's basically just a canvas for her imagination. That cloak wasn't an impenetrable barrier of defensive magic to her, it was a cloak made of cloth abd she grew up watching cloth be cut. Same with hair. Ubel is basically the kid who immediately understands a particular subject intuitively while everyone else is having to study like crazy to get to her level, but never sees it the same way Ubel does. She's definitely a sociopath with sadistic and manipulative tendencies, but she's also kind of a genius. She's like Mozart if Mozart was Sukuna.

I don't care" *then proceeds to reminisce and think fondly of Flamme while praising her* You aint fooling me Serei😂 Serie will refuse to admit how much she loved Flamme, but then goes on a monologue about every detail of Flamme’s life. She reminisced about what Flamme loved (ex: her favorite magic spell being a field of flowers). The message behind the talk that Serie had with Frieren, is that Serie hates how short lived humans are and hated how Flamme was not going to live to see the results of her work. Now I also have to praise the animation with Frieren and Fern double teaming against Frieren. The fact that we were able to fully see the pinnacle of magic and she standing there so menacingly also scared me for a second 😂 It’s crazy that Frieren hasn’t been forced to use that move since she was against the Demon King just shows how powerful the Demon King was. And I also have to say that the fact Fern was able to help unleash that part of Frieren’s power that’s been locked away for like 80 years….. Just shows that Fern is a PROBLEM or soon to be.

The thing about Ubel is that she didn’t try to kill the first class mage. That’s why she said, “Oh, I cut too deep.” She expected Burg (who was literally known to be “immovable” because of his cloak) to withstand her attack. She just wanted to move him so she could pass. She really was there for the same reason as everyone else and she clearly showed that she had the strength to be first class, but she overestimated her own strength once put up against a known first class defensive mage and his “immovable cloak”. 😭😭 She didn’t go out there to try to kill him. That’s also why Sense said no one expected things to turn out the way they did. It was just an unfortunate accident.

I've been watching anime for over 20 years and I haven't really seen any crazy mage battles either (i know they exist out there). Anime is so focused in close range combat that I had no hype or expectation for mage battles when i first watched Freiren and was genuinely blown away. Mage battles have all the potential in the world for the craziest animations and colors.

The magic system in this world is soooo well written. Like the time when Lügner told Fern "I've dedicated most of my life to magic" and Fern replying "So have I", even with their age difference they both dedicated the same amount of their lives to magic. Same with when Frieren was explaining how Zoltraak is a new spell to her elven instincs, even after 80 years of research and dedication to Zoltraak, but for Fern it's ingrained into her being, having lived her whole life with Zoktraak existing. So many more details that i could name but this is propably what makes this magic/power system one of my favourite in all media.

I would also prefer that they slowly start to work through shows they haven’t finished, even if it’s a show I dont particularly watch, since I’m of the mindset of finishing shows I’ve started, and to not create a precedent for a show being reacted to having a chance of just never being finished. Just by the way, at least in my interpretation, it seems to be implied that at 43:24 Methode had already won that fight against Fern (albeit it obviously seemed intense) you can see the "smoke" from Clone Fern dissipating right in front of Methode. I at least interpret that as it's likely she managed to bind Clone Fern with her magic during the battle. Methode is actually a pretty nasty Mage

Anime is boring.

Frienen has only been shown to use that spell twice, once when her village was attacked, and she killed the demon. You can see that the aftermath of the spell is similar to Fern. The reason why that spell is so powerful is that the show makes a big point of visualization to get your intent across and use magic. Frienen bypasses this visualization and goes directly to intent; she instantly forces her will upon the world without visualization. The Visualization is what tells the mana what to do and how to act; that manipulation is what creates the spell effect, and that's how mages can respond to attacks. But Frienen just went straight into killing intent. And as you can see, the drawback is that she is left completely defenseless. That's why she said at the start it could kill us without us being able to react in time.

I absolutely love these two episodes. It really puts the power scaling and quirks of this world's magic system into perspective, and the animation is gorgeous, of course. Also, that death stare that Frieren's replica gives Fern is forever etched in my mind. That whole scene is interesting because the replica uses Frieren's last resort spell against Fern in kind of a spiteful/careless way because the spell makes you vulnerable to counterattacks; the replica chose to ignore Frieren to try and take out Fern with itself. I think it shows some of Frieren's vindictive side or maybe like a prideful arrogance? I'm not sure exactly but that's how I interpreted it, I'd be interested to hear what others think.

Frieren's replica basically just blasted Fern with raw mana, that's what Fern meant that she doesn't recognize it as a spell. As I understand it, the height of magic is basically manipulating mana to do what you want instead of using spells that streamline the process. The scriptures for example are required to cast "magic of the goddess", because her magic is so ancient and lost to time that nobody understands how it works, so they just follow the template spells from the scriptures to copy the magic of the goddess. Similarly a lot of demon magic is still not understood by humans, but they can replicate it. Remember when their carriage got lifted by the bird monster? Frieren explained that it wouldn't be as simple as making everyone fly because while mages had recently learned how to copy flying magic from demons, they don't understand how the spell works so they can't simply adapt it for different uses. This, together with the whole focus of how magic is all about imagination and visualisation and Ubel's backstory, just makes the magic system in Frieren's world so cool, and one of my all time favorites in any fantasy. The way they build up the world and how magic has influenced it's history is just so cool, from the Mythical Era to the Unified Dynasty Era to the Unified Empire Era, and now the Era of Peace. I can't wait to find out more about it in future seasons.

This fight scene is so goated but my favorite moment is actually the very start of the fight in episode 25. It starts super abruptly the suck fucking music kicks in with the insane flutes and then Frieren and her doppelgänger are just aiming at each other adjusting their staffs and they’re both deploying and removing complex small magic shields like 5 times each before slamming each other with a crazy spell we’ve never seen her fire before. Intense way to start and you have no choice but to drop your jaw and widen your eyes!! This fight is so goated

Serie and Frieren are very similar, they both think that the lives of himmel/flamme were too short to leave any meaning. This whole show is about how frieren slowly recongnizes that these small encounters are meaningful. Serie doesnt see things that way, but still remembers flammes favorite spell. a pretty meaningless thing to remember imo. just goes to show that serie does feel some type of way, she just doesnt even know it, or want to admit it i guess

Im ngl I don't understand the comparison. Bakugo has had 8 seasons worth of development and growth where Übel has has maybe 7 episodes. She has a pretty cool magic, and her personality reflects that, but I feel like she gets outshined by Denken, Richter, Wirbel, and the dude with the glasses (ironically I can't remember his name, but I think he still has more depth than Ubel.)

I've watched Frieren S1 over 50 times, I enjoy catching new things each time I watch it. The animators and Directors have done an amazing job and it looks like s2 will be even better visually! On the Solo Leveling Debate, I think S1 and S2 had several great fight sequences. Especially the Serpent, Red Knight (Igris), and The Fight against the ant. That being said like you mentioned. Where SL falls short is its characters and story, as well as it's adaptation. The manwha was awesome, but just like the show lacks any decent supporting characters, and ultimately has a meaningless storyline by the end. (iykyk) Aside from Sung Jin Woo and maybe Director Go, most characters outside of looks dont have very memorable or impactful stories on the general narrative. I would say SL is an amazing action series, it has awesome Aura Farming, and cool fights (like really cool fights) but from a story telling perspective its a bit empty and things that happen don't really have a lasting impact. Frieren on the other hand has many many memorable characters who some only were alive for on episode (Himmel) but still have a lasting impact on the overall story and characters and sub characters throughout the entire series. Madhouse has done an amazing job adapting it as well, many fight scenes and story beats from S1 are 1-2 panels in the Manga (Stark and Fern dance is a good example). I think as far as story telling and as you mentioned the "Full Meal" Frieren Delivers. Other shows and stories do the same. FMA Brotherhood, Delicious in Dungeon (slow start but my god the world building), My Dressup Darling, DanDaDan, soon to be Witch Hat Atelier, etc etc. So, I will say for me personally SL if just based on Action alone is a 9.5-10 but overall I'd say maybe an 8.5 because the characters are just not deep or meaningful at all. As to where overall Id rate Frieren a 9.5-10 given the depth of Character development, and world building. Though I will say it is unfair to compare them when they are in 2 different categories. That being said I'm just happy so many people love anime enough to have fun discussions like this. We are in a golden age of anime, some of the best stories and animations are being made within our lifetime and that is awesome!

I love how the fights are animated. Especially now, there’s such a focus on like *clash* *light* *clash* *woosh* in a lot of stuff. I love that you can actually see what’s happening and still get those beautiful and epic visuals. It takes more work for the animators and pays off way better imo. And then the music on top. CINEMA

I think Serie just doesn't recognize she does. She contradicts herself a lot. She says she just takes these on students on a whim, and acts like she doesn't care about them, yet clearly they all hold a special place in her memories. Both Serie and Frieren are like autistic children lol, Serie is just further on the spectrum.
