Yeah as someone who watched the Dub growing up, I think the sub is better (still love the dub though). But the best dub ever is Cowboy Bebop, even the creator said he loved the dub. Hope you guys watch it someday

I’d rather rewatch it in sub than hear the dub, the voicing acting and written lines in dub is just so poor. Being the ‘realistic’ you described is jsut your version of reality, not everyone re/watches or wants to use shows as background noise while doing other things. You’re the unrealistic one here, so get off your high horse and stop your elitism thinking your perspective is the universal correct one.

Cringing when watching the dub comes from hearing voices that are blatantly put-on and unnatural. Instead of finding natural voices that fit characters they mostly have regular voice actors try and modulate their voices, which significantly hurts the delivery from a technical and emotional point - such as Naruto's voice. There is a lot of over-acting and overmodulated voices in english dub generally, and it just feels very fake. It takes you out of the show and any emotional response to relevant scenes is muted. It's no different from watching a good movie where one of the actors has a sub-par, dead-pan delivery. Every scene with that actor can take you out of the movie. In the case of dubs it's the majority of the main cast and nearly all side characters take you out.

Like Cannon said, the best part about this is getting to rewatch great moments from the show. The hottest take is that the dub has better sound effects, mostly because people don't usually notice that. The Minato take is pretty hot too. It's too bad the Guy and Jaraiya scenes you guys watched were so serious, they are funny. In the end, the weight of expectations is too much and comparison is the thief of joy. The dub operates at a different comedic timing, Shippuden best viewed in dub imo, but at least you guys got your personal preferred viewing experience. I guess one day you'll probably watch Dragonball in sub, just to stick a stake in the heart of every viewer with nostalgia for dub, haha. Good video, guess it's all over.

Sub vs dub content always makes me come out of my lurker cave. I could go on forever about sub vs dub takes, but two major differences I noticed between the two are vocal pitch & emotional tones (nasal tone as well). English listeners really love their deep voices, to the point where a lot of the actors sound the same (or very similar) IMO. You have Pain, Jiraiya, Madara, and even Itachi with similar deep voices that sound epic, but do they really fit the character? Like the boys said, Jiraiya has a really good voice actor, but compared to his JP-VA counterpart, he really lacks that unique and comedic way of speech. I heard Itachi's dub for the first time here, and I was like Jack where I really thought he sounded like Pain. Itachi's JP-VA has a very soft, calm, and mature tone which I think fits the character given his role as a kind older brother to Sasuke. I grew up speaking English and Japanese, and I learned that Japanese is a very tonal language. If you listen to a lot of JPop, you hear a lot of nasally singers. Funny enough, this tone is what gives a lot of JP-VA's very unique sounding voices. Madara's EN-VA can only voice act well in calm moments lol and the opposite is true for Naruto's dub. The actress is very good at aggressive scenes, but not so much the calm or emotional scenes 😅🔇"THAT MAKES ME REALLY HAPPY" 🔇 I will say though, as a sub guy, that Minato and Kushina dub scene was very good. I legit thought Minato was going to sound monotone af while Kushina would sound very generic... but no, it was a very well done dub and they killed it👏👏 Maybe a hot take, but I liked Edgerunners in sub. Yuuki Aoi kills it as Lucy 😤 Fight me

I have an interesting theory. There's something about hearing these anime in your native language that somehow makes you cringe a little bit more than hearing it in a 2nd language or a language you dont understand at all. If i were to hear it in danish, i wouldnt get through 2 episodes. Hell, I had to watch demon slayer movie with danish subtitles and it ruined it for me

There’s only been one anime where I truly prefer the Dub over Sub and that’s Yu Yu Hakusho. Yusuke’s English VA had one of the best performances in any language. If you ever want to watch a dubbed anime pick that one.

Yea, Justin's voice was great as Yusuke! Almost too great! But I think overall, as an adult, the voice direction and script for dub grate my brain now. They don't match up with Togashi's intention or tone and since I understand Japanese now, I know why the dub worked for me as a teenager.

For me it's always SUB. And what i hate the most of DUB is that streaming platforms tend to modify subtitles to match dub lines and sometimes screw what the characters are actually saying, after watching many anime shows you can grasp a little of japanese and tell the subs aren't 100% accurate and it infuriates me. Back in my days we used to watch the shows with fan subs and it was way better than what we get now, most of them even had special effects that enhanced the experience.

I mean I mostly watch in dub because I stare at a computer all day long for work and it's easier to listen to in dub when my eyes are too tired to focus and read. But, I also like sub and will watch it that way as well. I'd be down for a MHA one, but you should do funny moments too!

I gotta say, in the spanish community, most people think US dub is not good so I tried to watch this video as unbiased as possible. I gotta say, I have no reason to watch any anime in english dub (or even access to it tbh) so I can't say it's true or not, all I ever heard is from videos like this one. It's not really fair if I said the dub sucked, because there were a few characters that sounded pretty good but what happened with Madara made me think that what the english dub lacks is good directors, the majority of VA sounded decent albeit some of them sounded the same or very similiar to each others ( I was not watching the video, more like just listening) I don't want to say the directors are bad as I don't know much of what you need to have to be a good one, but maybe they just need to take this more seriously?? not think that this is a cartoon, just pour a little more passion ig. Also, for some reason, Naruto's dub voice remains me of Erick Cartman, but the funny part is that I've never listened to his english voice, I'm relating it to the spanish one lol

Nobody talks about how dub is doomed 90% of the time because the american directors make them use cringe accents that are 20 years out of date. On top of that they always cheap out and hire theatre kids or random youtubers who put "VA" in their name because they know dub fans will pretend the acting is good no matter what. If its bad enough all they have to do is throw in some tiktok dialogue and the dub fans will eat it up EVERY TIME. Theres a reason the acting in shows like INVINCIBLE are so good, because they hired real actors, who know how to act, not BryceJacksonVA off of youtube

You know what, Carter? When it comes to your kids watching anime in dub, let me just say this. You got into anime as an adult, and therefore have the capacity to choose sub versus dub based on taste and preference. And that’s a wonderful thing! But for kids growing up on anime at a young age like many of us did, it’s honestly a right of passage to have an old school anime dub that you’re weirdly attached to because you watched it when you were 8. That’s Naruto for me haha! I hope your kids can have a cheesy dub they love that you hate, just for the fun of it 😁

I’m from a russian-speaking country, so I remember how bad many of our anime dubs were in the 2000s (with a few exceptions) and how much better they’ve become now. In our language space anime dubs really started improving when actual theatre actors began dubbing anime. I don’t know the English dub scene that well, but to me it often sounds like the dubs aren’t performed by trained actors. For example, Arcane, Invincible, and the Spider-Verse all are animated projects that are originally produced in English; they cast established actors, and the performances sound great. In anime, I’d expect the acting to feel like that too, but a lot of English dub performances have a distinct, over-the-top cadence, they don’t sound the way people actually talk. Some people argue that “well, the original voice acting also sounds over the top, that’s just how anime is,” but I think that’s wrong. This kind of overacting isn’t exclusive to anime. Japanese live-action productions often have a similar style. Just because a certain level of exaggeration suits one language doesn’t mean it automatically works in others. Imagine if Korean movies dubbed into other languages tried to preserve the same kind of “K-drama whininess” in the performances, it would probably sound very strange, maybe even kind of racist. I think maybe the problem is not in the actors themselves, but in dub directors, its hard to say who is the root of that problem, but the problem is there.

I really feel like some of the clip choices were not good. Gaara's speech, Obito after Neji's death, Obito vs Kakashi, Naruto saying goodbye to Minato are some of the best voice acting performances in the dub. Also no Killer Bee? And yeah, I have watched a lot of sub vs dub and it is impossible not to be biased. Whatever you watch something in, will always win over the other version, except in special cases. You just get attached to the voices. That is why when shows have good sub and dubs, when I rewatch I watch the other version and then I can decide. Naruto was my first anime, I watched it in Albania, my native language as a kid (really terrible dub lol). Then during the many rewatches I watched both sub and dub. For some reason the dub vastly outperforms for me in most characters. Some like Naruto are weak to be fair, but when they hit the peaks, the dub just does it way better.

No disrespect to fish but some of the most iconic moments weren’t in here, madara revealing himself to pain, Itachi screaming saskue during their fight, and gara’s speech were all not included. I will always prefer the dub, but I do think the dub works better in moments instead of full scenes, and it’s tough to get over Narutos voice in dub if you know him as principal perry 😂😂😂

Would you guys ever consider reacting to romance anime? If so, I highly recommend Fruits Basket and Kimi ni Todoke as my top picks. Both are phenomenal shows, but for very different reasons. Fruits Basket is probably my third favorite anime of all time, and it’s deeply nostalgic for me since it was my first anime back in middle school (the 2003 version). It was also one of my first manga and stayed my number one manga for many years. The remake of the anime did the story so much justice. One of my best friends and I watched it weekly as new episodes came out, and it made us both so happy. The characters hold such a special place in my heart, and the plot is incredibly deep and compelling. It’s another one of those stories filled with life lessons everyone should hear. And of course, the romance is peak in my opinion - it has my all-time anime OTP. I definitely recommend it if you enjoy strong character development and stories about overcoming personal struggles and trauma. Kimi ni Todoke is amazing in a different way. It’s softer, more wholesome, and more grounded, but still just as impactful. It focuses heavily on the main character’s personal struggles (kind of like Mob, though obviously a totally different genre). Her journey is so relatable and heartfelt - you cry with her, smile with her, laugh with her, and get frustrated for her. That emotional connection is one of the reasons I love it so much. It does something in romance that I honestly haven’t seen done quite the same way before. There’s just a really special quality to it that I really admire. These are my two favorite romance anime of all time. Both have made me cry, smile, and feel an incredible kind of happiness that’s honestly rare. There’s also a newer one I watched recently that might eventually reach that level for me. It came out last year and made me sob - The Fragrant Flower Blooms with Dignity. I was genuinely impressed and shocked by how much I loved it. The main couple is adorable, wholesome, and very relatable. It made me feel things I haven’t felt from a romance story in a long time, which was such a pleasant surprise. Anyway, just wanted to share my thoughts! Not sure if this is a genre you’d be into, but I figured I’d throw my two cents in. Loved this ranking video btw - such a fun year with so many great watches!

I know it won’t happen anytime soon, but still hoping you guys get around to watching Black Clover (maybe just OPs for now as it’s one of the best). It’s my third favourite anime and I’m absolutely hyped for the new season with improved animation. Hopefully, after Naruto’s replacement as Bleach and Jojo’s are still on the table.
