Every arc has importance and adds to the overall story and world-building, even arcs that divert from the main plot like Skypiea, Long Ring Long Land or Thriller Bark. Sometimes the importance is obvious and sometimes it's subtle, and sometimes it's impossible to notice until years later when Oda expands on a character or dialogue or plot-line and blows your mind (it happens a lot lol).

Guys I’m sorry, but one piece is a show about adventure, traveling the seas as a pirate, there’s going to be a lot of side track stories, it’s the core of the series. Not going to let you think otherwise. But it’s great content so don’t worry.

I also personally don’t think thriller bark was a “side track” arc or that there are any because a lot of things make sense later as you progress through the story and Oda has a great way of connecting details, characters and plot points from different arcs to the main plot.

I believe each arc in its own way makes us learn about the story even when you don’t necessarily notice it at first but the more you watch the more you realize that it was there all along. There is not one arc in One Piece that isn’t necessary to understand the story so even when you think that an arc was just side quests with no importance think it through !

Ace standing his ground against Akainu is obviously frustrating on first watch, but when you see how many times as a kid that he refused to run away even when the odds were against, it's really more that his luck finally ran out. Ace was always stubbon about running from a fight, even more so when it involved someone who was happy he existed. Also episode descriptions are usually meant to live out surprises and big details. They are to give you a general idea of the episode before you watch, not spoil it. If you want a summary then check the wiki.

Wanting to know everything and explore a certain topic deeper is normal, but this is a story about a boy wanting to be king of the pirates. Luffy is making his way through the world and these things are happening around him, we learn about the world government at the pace that the journey dictates. If Luffy's dream was to take down the world government then I'm sure we'd learn more about them a lot quicker but it's a background plot and the slow unfolding adds to the authenticity of the world in my opinion. If all the secrets were out there for everyone to know then there would be no mystery. Like everyone else has said you still have hundreds of episodes to learn about all this.

Regarding the diabolical nobles’ designs: Oda always exaggerates the ugliness of people without ambition or dreams. This also explains Koby’s drastic change after he decided to pursue his dream. Shakky and Granny Nyon are around the same age, yet Shakky lives happily with her husband while Nyon gave up on her love, which explains the huge difference in appearance. Hope Hancock doesn’t get the same treatment 🥀 Oda even drew strawhats at ages 40 and 60 where they look great, then added alternate versions labeled “In a future when things went wrong” where they abandoned their dreams/ideals and aged like milk

the point of this arc is exactly what you guys have been asking for. you wanna know about luffy's past and how he grew up outside of the shanks/windmill village stuff and they're giving it to you. you wanted to know how luffy and ace became brothers and now we know. they're giving the people what they want. Story wise i think this is genius too because we've seen not everyone comes from a happy place but we've only ever seen mostly positive from luffy's back story except for the mountain bandits but that wasn't strong enough to show his care for others and determination. you gotta see why luffy goes out of his way for people especially for Ace after what just happened. this is just fleshing his character out more before development.

i couldn't have said it better myself. One piece has so many call backs. you might think one arc is insignificant to the "story" but it all comes together one way or another. The background plot outside of luffy chasing his dreams slowly begins to weave itself into the main plot. however don't forget at it's core this is a story of Luffy becoming the Pirate King which there's no roadmap on how to get there so he's figuring it out as we go along on these adventures.

totally agree! while things like sabaody r amazing and themes of corruption/revolution r super important and prevalent throughout the story, i dont really agree with one piece getting 'side tracked' in the typical sense, bcuz at the end of the day its always been clear that this is about luffy and cos adventures more than anything else. sometimes these things r as big as shooting through the world governments flag, and other times theyre as small as meeting a singular man stuck in a treasure box - regardless every new island and character brings them a new story to tell and for others to tell about them, while further expanding the world. as big of a splash as the strawhats have already made as rookies, things have been in motion since before them, and continue to be in motion around them - with or without their input or our constant focus

yeah, cuz generally speaking i dont think many things would be considered actual 'side tracks' within the story! as u said, in many ways this is still just meant to be one giant overarching adventure for our crew, where the main plot is simply to chase their dreams along the way, not overthrow the government or get caught up in things like that haha - still, we always love to see how things tie into the big picture and how many revolutions happen on the smaller scale in meantime as we go too!

To put it simply: the main plot = become King of the pirates. The secondary plot = the storyline of whatever island/ arc they are going through. Everything else is moving in the background and becomes relevant sometimes but is not the main focus making it a background plot

Anyway my point is that Luffy is not out to get the world government and only interacts with them when their paths cross or they hurt someone that has given him food I guess. So it’s only natural that the audience would learn at the same slow pace because Luffy quite frankly is just not interested in it. He has a deep loyalty to his friends and that more often than not is the reason he gets involved

On the topic of the point of the arc, I am acknowledging that it was said this is Luffy's backstory with Ace but I wish to expand on this. It was mentioned that we've seen Luffy crying more of recent. Up to this point that was rarely the case. The arc demonstrates that under the occasional serious but mostly goofy exterior of Luffy was a crybaby who cares deeply about friendship. It also demonstrates how at even a young age Luffy will endure immense pain to protect his allies and their dreams. This arc also shows how Luffy came around to judging people's character: Dadan being an aggressive, tough-love, red haired smoker is a mix of Nami and Sanji; Ace and Sabo being abrasive and combat competitive mirrors Zoro and Sanji [Note: A to Z and S and S]; Ace and Sabo saving up for their pirate dreams mirrors Nami's treasure saving; The mountain bandits being "outsiders" but are actually caring people that are a bit fearful at times mirrors Chopper and Usopp [Note: the bandit with a chicken hat], etc. It should also be noted that the fire engulfing the "undesirables" of the Grey terminal is symbolic of Ace who saw himself as undesirable. If the point trying to be understood was meant for future plot points, I don't believe you'll find anything satisfying on the surface level. This arc specifically - in my opinion - was to contextualize Luffy's decision making and relationships up to this point by experiencing his past, and to just provide more reasons to hate the socio-economic conditions between the nobility and everyone else.

I feel like in One Piece there are no “side track” arcs. Every arc contributes to the plot, whether it being present or towards the future. Everywhere we go on journey to achieve Luffy’s dream is meaningful. And not even just Luffy, but the straw hats and other characters we either met or don’t. For example, you guys mentioned Thriller Bark as a “side track” arc. In a sense, they were supposed to go to Fishman Island but got stopped by Thriller Bark. However, the arc contributes so much to the plot. We get a new crew member Brooke, we learned the connection to Laboon, we first hear more on a yonko (Kaido), Lola explaining the Vivre card to Luffy which traced back to Alabasta and this led to Luffy finding out Ace has been captured, we first hear abt an island that Zoros new sword came from (wano), introduced to another Warlord Kuma who mentions Dragon at the end, showcases Zoro’s loyalty and honor (also Sanji too), we first see Oars and learn some backstory and it connects to Marineford, and lots more other foreshadowing that I can’t say. So my point is, even if you didn’t personally like the arc compared to another, there’s no denying the significance each arc brings into the plot. So, it’s like we’re also on this journey with Luffy sailing as we unravel secrets, liberate, and learn more about the world, either unintentionally or intentionally

i said this in C&A comments since ange especially was weirded out by the placement of this flashback saying it should’ve been during the war. i disagree and i’m pretty sure the rest of the community are with me on this because: 1. it takes away from the war when so many things are already happening 2. the usage of the flashback here is not to show you just how they were as brothers, it’s literally to use it as a knife to twist at your heart. it’s to show the real reason ace stayed back and fought akainu not because he fell for the rage bait. if you were bothered by it now you will feel pain from remembering it. 3. it’s to show what shaped the anomaly that is monkey D. luffy, we known him for 500+ episodes but haven’t really had answers to why he’s the way he is. now we have full contex, why is he so ravenous when it comes to food? because he had to fight so many bandits for a slice of meat. why is he so fascinated by bugs, because he lived in the mountains for so long and he looked for the coolest looking one to impress ace. why is he so starved for friends and family? because being alone is worse than death to him (and why the sabaody incident was too much for him) 4. this arc serves to show how luffy came to be, what ace meant to luffy and how would life without him be going forward. i think it was perfectly placed after marineford and before the next arc so we have a better understanding of who luffy really is since he doesn’t talk about himself much

Just a comment from last episode.... Akainu, Kizaru & Aokiji aren't they're real names. They're Codenames. Aokiji Means Blue Pheasant, Kizaru Means Yellow Monkey & Akainu Means Red Dog. they're real names are Sakazuki, Kuzan (Aokiji) Borsalino (Kizaru)

The nobles of the Goa kingdom complaining about the bright sky at night whilst the poor are literally burning alive.... It reminds me a lot of a scene in the movie Parasite; where the rich family talked about how the heavy rain fall is great because it means the weather in the morning will clear up, whilst the poor are completely flooded and lost their homes.

it isn’t confirmed, but I think that it was Ace’s haki blast and it was just weak and untrained. So it wasn’t enough to take out the bigger one (if he was trained I’m sure it would’ve). I don’t think he ever even knew he had it, but of course he would seeing at he’s Roger’s son

i have watched all of one piece (not one pace) and i’m caught up and all, so with that in mind i’d like to recommend one pace for a couple of arcs in post timeskip considering the boys enjoyment for the show and their taste in anime. I'd like to hear your opinions.

I do get where you guys are coming from with the whole sidetracked thing. Arcs like sabaody, impel down, marineford all have "real" consequences; Luffy loses his crew, takes years off his life to rescue Ace, Ace is moved to Marineford and then dies alongside Whitebeard. They serve as sort of turning points in the story whereby you struggled with Thriller Bark because it was more comedic with a goofy villain until Kuma showed up but even after that the crew are seemingly fine and they move on to the next island. So yeah it felt like a little halloween story. Imo every arc in one piece has it's signifcance to the overarching plot and Luffy's story, Oda cooks in his own weird way :)

yeah, ive never used one pace myself and dont really intend to, but having rewatched fmi pretty recently id def recommend one pace for the geks during that arc

One Pace for Fishman Island, Punk Hazard and maybe some of Dressrosa would be great. I remember them being dragged out heaps and was actually losing interest on my watch. Every arc after those three is great on the original.

I’ve always been a One Piece watcher, but for the past year I’ve been doing a 100% rewatch with One Pace to compare. I generally recommend it to most folks & would strongly urge them to utilize it for fishman, punk, dressrosa & wano (just my opinion based on their previous thoughts on pacing, I really want them to enjoy these arcs!)

I vote for a mix of one pace and og one piece for fishman, instead of the remastered version. The remastered version cuts out a few canon scenes and I think it would be weird to go from this quality animation back to regular animation in the next arc. I would rather keep the upgrade in animation a surpise for them in the 🌸🌸⚔️ arc. I remember being so amazed seeing the animation upgrade in that arc, and want the boys to experience the same :)

I absolutely agree, what i think would be best is if someone makes a list for what episodes and parts should be in one pace and which in one piece and send Jack the list which then he could like go through real quick and see what parts he agrees with and not up to whatever episode he’s at. I’m saying all this but i already know mannyyyy people will complain whenever they watch one pace due to 1 or 2 of their favorite scenes missing or something. EDIT: I’m saying all this but they should pick one pace over one piece in badly paced parts and any other parts that actually need it and not like hundreds of episodes back to back.

Almost every issue they had with one piece so far can be tied back to Toei and their pacing. So im heavily for one pace post time onward. I want them to watch the story like oda intended, no half a chapter per episode, no filler.

For many years, the mayor pushed to “develop” the city by building modern infrastructure.
