When you start One Piece, you immediately think "How the hell is Luffy so strong already??" I think even the boys questioned it back in the beginning. That was the same for me as well because in most animes, the main character starts off weak and then trains to get stronger. With Luffy he was already strong and we really didn't know how he became so strong. Now after seeing this backstory, we know he's been training his attacks for 10 years, also got beatings from Garp (a Navy Hero and he was Roger's revival), and he fought with Sabo and Ace everyday with each other or with them monstrous animals in the forest. It hurts hearing Luffy doubt his dreams because now he's at a point in his life where he feels like how he was as a little kid, weak🥺 He lost his crew, has been taking Ls defeating his enemies, and lost his brother due to him saving his life. Luffy as a kid expressing how strong he wants to be, so he doesn't lose anyone else just hurts man🥲 And now he's alone again 💔 Ep 503 is such a great episode, glad it was rated a 9. The episode gave so much feels, I cried for Sabo and got emotional when Ace and Luffy was by the cliff

I had doubts about the placement of this flashback and i kinda used to think they could’ve placed it somewhere better but now that i watched again with you guys and especially after seeing today’s batch i feel like it was perfectly placed because at the start you get to see more of ace who just died and it takes you out of your sadness a little bit seeing him and luffy as kids and then you get introduced to the third brother sabo and he takes the flashback to another level and seeing whah happens to him and the promise between luffy and ace that ace will never die leaving his crybaby little brother just hits so hard and it gives more to ace’s death

He actually mentions it a couple of times before Aces death, he wanted to “spend” more time with Aces character to feel even more attached to him. I don't think I ever questioned the placement of this backstory. Even though a large part of it is to show Ace's backstory, the main takeaway for me is that this was the moment Luffy decided he needs to be strong, not just to be pirate king, but to protect the people he loves so he doesn't ever have to lose them (which is something he mentioned back in Enies). And Sabo's death was the deciding factor for that. So us getting this flashback after Luffy suffered his greatest loss was so perfect for me and why him saying he's weak hit so hard. I don't see how we could have got this flashback anywhere else. I guess right when Ace died(??? but I honestly don't think I would have appreciated seeing a hole in Ace's chest then a cut to a flashback). Crazy of me to say but this was when Luffy really became my favourite character in One Piece. I just feel like I really understood him as a character after this. Bro's worst nightmare is being alone😭The only part where I could see it being questionable is why Sabo was never mentioned (I imagine Sabo as a concept was added later, maybe during impel down) but then again, Luffy never talks about himself so I don't mind that. The crew didn't even know Ace existed and he never once questioned where his parents are.

So many wholesome and emotional moments in this backstory, that just wouldn't hit as hard if it was placed anywhere else in the story. Transitioning from Luffy first setting sail and declaring to become King Of The Pirates, to returning to the present to see Luffy doubting himself for the first time ever is peak Oda writing.

I think the backstory is well timed. If it was earlier it would feel like it's almost telegraphing Ace's death from all the red flags ("I promise I'll never die" etc.) and it would have felt weird to take such a long step away from the main story any earlier, except maybe right after Sabaody, but again that would have just been setting everyone up to think Ace would die soon. By putting it after Ace's death, you really want to savor every moment you get with Ace because you know the past is the only place you get to see him now. It's also a bit of a full circle moment because the main "end" of the flashback story (not counting when they age up quickly to wrap it up), is Sabo dying and Ace and Luffy's reaction. When confronted with Sabo's death Luffy realizes how weak he is. Now confronted with Ace's death, he's realizing that in this world he is still too weak.

I dont have to lose anybody!". when you meet luffy in ep 1, hes already at that point where he was confident in protecting the crewmates he gathered up til now until sabaody. he always had that happy nature to him, but he didnt cry until current day because he was resolved after going through the things he did with ace and sabo as a kid. that and shanks' sacrifice really shaped who luffy is today

I think what makes it sadder is that the worse thing for Luffy is being alone. He lost his crew and had to deal with that but had the hope of saving the one other person that grew up with him, understands him better than anyone and who also felt the loss of losing Sabo so they were in together. These two quotes hit so incredibly hard for me. Because it's true. Young Ace didn't know the specifics of Sabo's death, but he understood the underlying truth. It's the system that killed him. This system that allows people like the celestial dragons to exist and allows people to exert their power over others and rip them from their rights. I love how this backstory gives more context as to why Luffy and Ace wanted to pursue freedom at all costs. Everything they've experienced in their childhood paved the way for them to want this more than anything. I adore how Oda wrote this, every motivation, every consequence just makes so much sense. You finally understand why Luffy is the way he is and why he is so relentless in the pursuit of his goal. Because it's not just his goal, it was also Ace's and Sabo's.

In regards to them running through the fire/ having clothes on or off it really depends on the clothes. Synthetic materials like polyester or nylon melt instead of burn, so they would melt to your skin, but when blended properly and treated they can be used in Flame Resistant (FR) clothing. Some of the NFPA 70E guidelines are: Threads must be from flame resistant fibers and not melt at 500°F When exposed to flame for 12 seconds, garments: Must self-extinguish in 2 seconds or less after flame is removed Must not have char damage of more than 6 inches Must not melt or drip Must remain compliant to all these standards after 25 wash and dry cycles.

If you think about it, fan letter dropped about a year and a bit ago. If you were just about caught up with the anime at the point you were already in the 1000s. The nostalgia, the memories and feelings of it all played a really heavy part in our enjoyment of it. Seeing as they’ve just watched the war arc and return to saboady it just won’t hit the same as it did for us. I feel like we’ve almost overhyped it too. Sure they’d appreciate the animation and the direction of it, but in its wholeness I think it’d be better if they wait and I’ll say it again in there next post too

Carter just nonchalantly talking about star wars while the entire rest of the geks and the table are just shaking uncontrollably lmao. To your point Carter, I actually was reading people's thoughts about this yesterday on Star Wars. Yoda should have no need for a lightsaber at all. His prowess with the force should make using the equivalent of a broadsword, unnecessary. Like dude is basically an all powerful wizard, and when do you ever see them using a sword. Like Gandalf in effing LotR, WHY DOES HE USE A SWORD? Because them just spamming their magic at every turn would be too op. Every writer does it.
