There's so much here in regard to philosophy, religion, how those affect the characters, and the world and how its viewed in general in general. Even watching this series twice I'm reminded of things I once figured out but also new angles for perspectives I never thought of. The show really racks my brain and I enjoy every second of it.

GreetswithJudgement

We’re going to get annoying with it but Baldeni is truly an amazing character.

Here's my story to Cannon's church question: Born to two parents who grew up going to church, but weren't close enough to religion to want to make me go or themselves go; however, I was baptized Catholic by the time I was like 3 years old, don't really remember. Throughout my lifetime (22), I had a few close people in my life who were religious, and as I got out of high school, I started to ask questions to them about religion and history behind it, not because I wanted to join a church, but because it was a new perspective on different things, which I found interesting. (If somebody finds me to be hypocritical or my reasoning doesn't seem sound for this next part, let me know) I myself believe there is some kind of higher being, but to believe in only a single being when there are multiple kinds of religions, it feels like "a truth" to believe rather than it being "the truth", and it feels like a more emotional draw that I haven't experienced yet in order for me to take the "leap of faith" towards a religion, so to speak. This next point might be from my lack of theology knowledge, but I also hate the idea of fate, because I like to believe choices matter, and your trajectory in life isn't a predetermined straight line, probably due to insecurities of not being successful at whatever I attempt, but it is what it is. The idea that choices matter over fate also comes from the fact that life, in general, objectively in my eyes, doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things. Subjectively, it does, like mine matters to my parents and vice versa, but my dad's life doesn't matter because he works a certain job or has a specific skill, anybody could have those, so he is free to make whatever choices in life, and not feel obliged or fated to do that skill or job forever. To come back to the show, I feel like in this era, religion tries to put emphasis on those aspects, in Badeni's case to not study super hard, because it's lust for knowledge, but he's trying to do more in his role than what God asks of him. Choices are being confined by the Church for its own institutional benefit. I think one day I could definitely see myself joining a religion and maybe some these thoughts change, but I think I haven't experienced enough of life yet to have that change.

Melizé

What a beautiful comment. I feel my views align with yours. Born and raised in a Catholic household, went to a Catholic school, and as a teeneager, I made the conscious choice to follow the Catholic Church, went through all the steps, got baptized, got my first communion, and later in life I chose the confirmation of faith. As I entered my adulthood, my perception of the world started to change. I do believe there is a greater being, I feel the world is too perfect to just happen to exist, I like to think we have a creator. However, after learning more about our worlds history, I distanced myself from the Catholic Church. I decided to keep the good lessons I had learnt and live my life based on how I feel is right.

Melizé

Chat, we did it, 43 comments, lets go! 😂

The show will just get better and better from here.

This is Daniel

I was raised in church, which can bring dogmatic perspectives. However, I also believe that science, philosophy and anything we can conceive is also a gift from God - i.e. consciousness itself is proof of that. We're just accustomed that we generally take it for granted.

Akko

really gotta love Badeni's and Oczy's duo

GreetswithJudgement

Great outro and good question, Cannon. When I didn’t believe or thought I didn’t, all I had to do was look up. For some people it really happens this way.

Oh we know, but we also know that people love it

Ninaly

oo ill chime in as an atheist! i feel like that wonder is the most emotionally compelling argument for god, because the one thing we all share is amazement at the world we live in, whether it was created through intent or chance. its easy to watch this show and interpret the god they speak of into what that personally means to me, since this is something different religions do daily when it comes to god. i think this is the show ive felt closest to the concept of faith, because its presented like a different shade of appreciation. this shows measured and thoughtful approach to exploring these topics makes you want to learn - think about new perspectives - and more than placing yourself in a certain camp, just appreciate the feeling that we're all living together in a whole ass solar system.

"Kinda Atheist" here. My take is eventually we're all gonna get the answer to what comes after so I just try and be a decent person and don't sweat it as much. But people who have that feverish faith I try to stay away from because they scare me.

Lil Mimi

Kinda want to ask my barber to get that bald hair cut

Mmmmm

As an Athiest, I believe Orb only cemented my beliefs. The world is beautiful, rational, and natural. As McKay put it, the show felt so grounding. I believe the wonder of the stars is beautiful as well, but I love how everybody can take so many different interpretations from a single thing.

Mmmmm

what are those katakana man, koorokoro munumunu?

Smart Guy

The philosophy, theology, and dialogue only get better from here. Cannot wait. Orb truly is a one of a kind with its dialogue and ideas. No other anime really makes you think like orb does.

コーロコロ ムニュムニュ

English speakers often say, Japanese people like using “onomatopoeia”. Korokoro means like rolling rolling, munumunu means like soft soft,I think 🙂

コーロコロ ムニュムニュ

This manga author told The author deliberately wrote the title as “Chi チkatakana” because he wanted the readers to think: after reading this manga, which kanji character Chi do you think fits? There are about 100 kanji characters that are read as "chi". I've identified three, but there may be others that fit, so I'm currently researching by looking at other Japanese people's blogs. It might be a spoiler, so I hope to be able to tell you in the final episode.

Hegataro

There aren't many like this, but I do love historical anime/manga. Especially when it's so good at depicting just how fantastical in many ways our own world is

Are-eem

Yes more orb!

Now that I’m older I definitely like learning things about history when I was younger definitely had no interest. That’s why shows that really make you think or feel something really are enjoyable.

Geks Movements On The Earth! Series or something?

Shpitz

This show creates so many good conversations. When I watch it I always think about conspiracies, like specifically flat earthers(which to preface I don't subscribe too). Like I can see why someone would believe that - because it makes the world more beautiful and more sensible to them. And in a sense, most people don't know any proof to why the earth is round other than being taught that it is today, which is in a sense a different kind of dogma. But as a side note it is much easier to observe and prove that the earth is round than that it moves around the sun, and the Greeks established it around 2000 years prior(and even calculated the volume of the earth)

MissJodles

My take as an agnostic atheist: I read a quote online recently, from David Attenborough or a similar figure on a wildlife social page, about the “significance” of our world. It basically stated that our planet is the most significant thing in our universe, and that really got me thinking. We are significant because we are the only life we can observe within our galaxy and as far as we can see into the stars. Philosophically thinking, that means that the most important and significant thing to exist in this universe is life. And therefore anything with life is significant and special for the reason of living. Our planet is precious because we and all living things exist on it. And to further that thought, we are the coincidence of perfect placement in our suns orbit to sustain that life. We were atoms from across the stars billions of years ago and we culminated here, in this space, and became cells, and became embryos, evolved, became humans, gained consciousness and thought and the ability to learn. Our life offered us the ability to understand ourselves and other life. We very much are the universe observing and experiencing itself, which is such a magical and awe inspiring thing. I think regardless of a belief in God or a greater power, myself and probably many people still feel an incredible respect and “magic” when it comes to science and the natural world. I’ll never forget when I was 12 and my parents took me to the countryside in France, far away from any cities. I’d never seen a starry sky that beautiful before, where you could see the entire Milky Way. 🌌 It was absolutely ethereal to me.

i believe in god just not in religion, because I believe we were given free will to do and believe what we want.

love love love this episode, badeni's backstory showing us his insatiable thirst for knowledge, his devotion to gods creation and trying to understand it as best he can, and seeing where that leads him... my goodness. that eye burning scene is so visceral and uncomfortable to watch, but it's also hard to look away from, like your eyes are glued to the screen. love that we also get more of oczy's doubt and reluctance, it really just makes him feel more realistic as a person, not just a character, because any normal person with a strong belief indoctrinated into them would be the same way. denial, hesitance, avoidance, all of it plays a role when you're in a situation like this, and i like that we can really see it shine with oczy's character through his dialogue. also, it might just be me, but i'm a sucker for shows that can pull off explaining things without making it feel stale, repetitive, or like you're being babied. they introduced a concept and explained it in minimal words, and gave us multiple visual examples to go along with it. i love it when shows are able to teach with visual cues, not just auditory/explaining, and this episode does just that with the earth-mars scene. also such a great character moment for oczy, being able to turn his eyes to the stars again, and appreciating it for all that it is.

In response to your question towards atheists, absolutely. I am a scientist through and through, and have never really been able to imagine a different career than that. My specialty is in evolutionary biology, not astronomy, but like (most, I imagine) a lot of curious or scientifically minded people, I have been deeply interested in space since childhood. I own a telescope, and looking up through it to see Saturn, or Mars, or different nebulas and galaxies, right there, not on a screen but with my own two eyes, it invokes a feeling of awe and wonder that is rarely matched in life. Outer space is a realm not meant for humanity, not in the sense of any god restricting it, but that we just really are not designed to survive there. Even merely going outside of the earth's atmosphere alive is dangerous and difficult. In a way, it makes me feel how I imagine the European explorers felt looking out at the Atlantic, imagining the new world beyond. Then, too, the journey was treacherous and hard. But beyond the journey lay sights no one from their society had ever seen. Imagining our species taking up that journey beyond earth, finally leaving our cradle, fills me with hope and wonder. I truly, genuinely hope that I will live to see man step foot on mars, not just as explorers, but as settlers. And it makes me sad to know that I most likely won't see much beyond that before I die. I've been watching this show for the first time alongside you guys, and I have to say, I am in love with it already. It perfectly captures that inspiration, that yearning for understanding, that we feel so strongly.

MrLasagna

I love this episode and I really loved your discussions, I enjoy how you guys can have these deep and full of insights conversations with each other (and us, at the same time!), so yeah, all of this filled me with so much joy I can barely express in words haha Also, I'm not sure if someone commented it already or if Carter figured it out by himself, but the quote you were looking for is probably "Power doesn't panic", from the goated Andor show. Cassian says it to Kino in the beginning of episode 10, right after Ulaf passes away, it's a really powerful scene!

LuvStarburst

If you guys can imagine how fast technology has advanced from the foundation of the US to now. Just think if the church didn't make science a forbidden thing back in the day how far we could've advanced by now, and to see what could have been unlocked if humanity wasn't stopped by religion.

Chosos Wife

Hi, not an atheist but Pagan here 👋🏻 I love this show a lot. I cried at nearly every episode. I believe in a godly presence, and spirits. Not THE god. A lot of people have misconceptions about Pagans but it is essentially just the love and worship of nature itself. The stars, the grass, the sea, the rain, the flora and fauna, the animals, the wind, the weather, the universe. Everything, from the source. But even in religion, it is easy to get weighed down by modern life and forget how beautiful the natural world is. So shows like this, that highlight the beauty of the night sky, hit me hard, as someone who worships nature yet cannot see the stars where I live due to light pollution. It hurts living in a modern world when you love the source and natural stuff brought from god so much. My brain feels easily rotted by Instagram reels and fan fiction as an easy distraction from life. It feels even weirder being 29 and being in the final proper generation that had a proper childhood and early teens with no social media, no mobile phones, just playing outdoors in nature with your friends. And then in our teens came all the affordable, portable technology and thus started the downfall. In love technology but also hate it. I long to live in nature away from it all but have spent too long tethered to social media and technology I think in wouldn't last very long. Thanks for the discussion at the end as oer usual.

Elio

I’m an atheist with semi-agnostic ideals. What I mean by semi-agnostic is that I see the collective existence of the universe as the closest thing to a higher being aka God. Ever since I first became conscious, I never really believed in the religions on Earth. The more I looked into them, the more convinced I became that they’re basically man-made coping mechanisms. I’ve always been fascinated by the universe! the stars, the sky above us, and the planets near and far. I’m honestly a huge nerd when it comes to learning about newly discovered planets, space travel, and exploration. When I’m in that mindset, I feel even more grounded in my atheism. These things are real. They’re made of things we actually understand. And there’s still so much left to discover. That’s why when I hear people say, “I wouldn’t want to be immortal. That’s scary. It’s not human,” I feel like they haven’t really thought it through. Because immortality could be the ultimate goal for humanity. Imagine never aging and being able to see countless places, times, and discoveries witnessing the long march into the unknown future. I could go on and on, but that’s basically my view on it, Cannon. I also really liked that the orb made you think more about these things! I think we can both agree on this: the universe is beyond fascinating. I hope you read it! and I’d love to hear what you or any of the other geks think too. (I really tried to keep this short 😭😂♥️)

Kasumii_

I'm an atheist and my view on this show might be a bit offensive to religious people so feel free to remove my comment if so (and also not read it if it would sour your mood, I don't mean to argue or anything and the last thing I want would be to upset anyone) but to me this show just shows that even 600 years ago religious teachings were proven wrong by fact, by those who had the nerve and the tenacity to go against what was hammered into their head their entire life and prove what they really believe in, in other words to prove the facts over the traditions. I find it interesting when someone talks about how absurd the religion in this show is because to me I genuinely don't see a single difference with the religion of today... well maybe the lack of torture for going against scripture is a big difference lol but I mean more or less the blind faith in that which you were taught by those around you is still a heavy component in what keeps religion going today, only difference is that things like heliocentrism have been PROVED in today's world so you have no choice but to agree with it, there's still teachings that religion doesn't let go of today that might seem absurd to religious people in the next 600 years because it's been proven by fact the same way you find geocentrism absurd even though it was an important teaching of religion in the past Again if this comment is worded too strongly or anything feel free to remove it!!! I really don't want this to upset anyone 😭

Michelle
