22:35 FYI this is an example of how heavily censored the Bleach anime was. Gin slices off Jidanbo's arm off and the giant is still able to hold the gate open until he gets pushed out. The censorship does cause Orihime's healing to seem weaker than it really is. She is able to completely heal Jidanbo's arm back.

Soul Society kinda sucks if you're in the Rukongai district. We never get a definitive answer on how big it is, but we can guess it has to be bigger than Earth to accommodate so many dead people. It has to be extremely difficult to find a relative there. Also, it has to be a one sided search because your family members that died before you have no idea when you pass away. Rukia made it clear in the first arc that the jobs the Soul Reapers have is to maintain the balance of the realms by killing hollows and sending spirits to the Soul Society. They already have their hands full, reuniting family members is gonna take up a lot of time.

One thing that I love that bleach explains well is the combat etiquette. In most shows with side characters you’re screaming for them to jump in and help, but not here. Kubo lays it out very clearly, fights are done 1v1. It’s about integrity and honor. You get to see what every character is capable of and everyone will get their time to shine. Plus it’s great to have an audience to aura farm in front of.

This just occurred to me and I wanted to share it😭. Which one would you rather be, from most to least: a ninja, pirate devil fruit user, or soul reaper? I know the guys just started Bleach and haven’t seen much of the power in soul reapers yet. But so far, I would rather be 1. Soul Reaper (I just want to aura farm with my spirit pressure and wear the black coat😭. Plus I can take down those Hollows no diff) 2. Pirate Devil Fruit User (I rather be a revolutionary than a pirate because I’m not dealing with the marines, world government, AND stronger pirates, hell nah😭. Devil fruits are a gamble but if I were to get an insane devil fruit like Enel’s and learn haki, I’m definitely choosing this as my number 1. I’m not facing no Minato during an invasion mission. However, if I am a uchiha, a jinchuriki, or I mastered taijutsu, I’m definitely being a ninja. Translation issue: "Ichigo" can mean "protector" but it can also mean "strawberry" based off the kanji used. That's why Jidanbo said "Ichigo, that's a cute name" and Ichigo went full offense and told him the kanji used in his name wasn't cute. lol I forgot how much of a delinquent Ichigo is in these first seasons. I feel like people forget he's a kid who regularly got into fights before the story started. I kind of wish the anime had pulled more of a Naruto and reminded us more often where these characters came from -- Ichigo feeling he killed his mother, his delinquincy after her death, Orihime regretting her words to her brother on the day he died, how Orihime, Chad, and Ichigo all faced bullying because they looked different. Kubo's fairly subtle in the way he writes the characters, but if you're not holding all that in your head as the story progresses, you forget why something like saving Rukia matters to them. I think that's one of the reasons I ended up dropping this show way back when, because I lost sight of their motivations thanks to the endless filler eps and distance from the opening seasons. You guys talked about Ichigo's goal last week, and I think rewatching this with you, Ichigo's goal isn't a growth goal, like "I want to be Hokage" or "I want to be the greatest." His goal is more a preventative one: "I don't want to lose anyone else." He states early in the first few episodes that he doesn't want anyone to feel the way his family did when he lost his mom, but I think he also is surrounded by people who've lost people -- so he feels its his responsibility to make sure he and his friends never have to face devastating loss again. He HAS to prevent Rukia's execution, because if he can't, in his mind, then he's killed Rukia like he killed his mother. It's the same reason why in the very first episode, he grabs a chair and tries to whack a Hollow with it when Karin's in danger. It's funny because he presents himself so confidently, but I think at his core, Ichigo operates primarily out of fear. That moment with Renji where he suddenly has a rush of power and looks like he's high might be one of the few times he WASN'T operating out of fear. At least, that's my read so far, rewatching the show with you!

Kubo was actually pretty unhappy with the anime adaptation especially during this stage, even though it's not bad there were a lot of seemingly random changes to the original. I think them having a copy of the manga around for whatever anime they are watching would be awesome. Take a few minutes during the post discussion looking through the chapter(s) to see any discrepancies or changes. It would add an extra layer and be so different from the norm.

Yes, for sure. People need to be careful with what they say about characters due to hindsight. When they meet someone for the first time, don't say something about them being your goat. Expectations can be just as bad as spoilers. Especially with something like Bleach which is very ambiguous at the beginning.

Well yes, obviously. But saying it for characters that they have just met and don't know yet creates expectations. There's a ton of comments like this about various characters in anything they watch. Some people take it a step further too by saying things to try to entice them about said character. They will come to their own conclusions and most likely like them eventually, so it's best to just let them experience it themselves. If they wanted these comments they wouldn't call them out every other video lmao

Yes, I agree there too. However, expectations are also subjective. Some people like being hyped up or being given reasons to expect something from a character. However, they (especially Cannon) have said that they don't care for those comments. So for them, those comments are a big deal. They want to figure out how they feel about a character on their own. For example, they could think a character is not important at all, but then the comment section hypes them up like crazy, and now they lose any surprise they would have for when that character does do something to warrant being goated.

oh that's funny, I don't mind the Japanese pronunciation. I like it better than other dubs' english translations of moves ("Water Wheel!" sounds silly in English). Especially since they use Spanish and German just as much, and with all three attempt to be as precise in pronunciation as they can. But to each their own!

Just a note, they might get ahead of this by putting that as a part of the caption. Everyone doesn't stay for the comments after the episode, and I don't think most people see acknowledging their favorite character as a spoiler. This is the first time I've ever heard that tbh.

IMO There's a difference between a plot spoiler and an enjoyment/experience spoiler, but both are still spoilers. I have stopped watching with friends who do the "oh, this part is so good" right before something happens. It steals the thunder from the character or story line. You don't get to have the authentic surprise in the moment because someone has already brought it up (and spoiled it for you).

Exactly, I agree. It can also work to have the opposite effect too. Hyping something could make them not care for it, or downplaying something by saying something like "This part sucks, but after this it gets good." Can lead to them potentially getting absorbed in the negatives. Studio Gek doesn't really do that, but everyone is susceptible to it.
