Keep in mind that even if the anime is fairly recent, Jojo's was written in 1986. You might recognize a lot of "classic anime tropes" or references, well most of them actually CAME from Jojo's, a lot of the anime you've been watching so far have been inspired in some way by Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. While it may seem overdone today, it was very new and bold at the time it came out.

Someone already commented this but I have to reiterate to put into perspective, jojos part one was being written in 1986!!! Literally the same time as OG Dragon ball. Not dragon ball z, dragon ball. It’s so influential in the manga sphere. Hirohiko Araki is the author and he’s widely considered one of the goat manga artists with such good art he has paintings in the Louvre next to the freaking Mona Lisa! He wrote part one in 1986 and is currently writing part 9. He’s been writing his series for 10 years longer than One piece has even been around and he’s still going strong. The manga is amazing and the anime did a phenomenal adaptation for his work, shoutout David Productions!

Also the ending theme Roundabout by Yes a very popular prog rock band from the UK, the ending songs are all chosen specifically by Araki as songs he was listening to when writing the specific parts

I know what you mean but it’s still so weird to me how they don’t watch openings or endings, just a weird decision. They make an essential part to the anime watching experience, they also act as mementos for the animes themselves down the line. Watching them later for a video is just so underwhelming as an experience compared to slowly attaching yourself to them as they become an essential part of the show (most shows, terrible openings exist). I know they probably do it so they have an extra video but I’m thinking about their experience here. I don’t ever think I had something get in the way for me because it was in an opening or something, they make a lot of shit up, just pretend everything is made up and everything will still be as much of a surprise. Like, even though Rumbling spoils well, the rumbling, I don’t think anyone would ever choose not to have watched the opening every week for how it became a staple of the show.

You will get the "That's from Jojo's" multiple times during your watch, Jojo's anime might be fairly recent, but the manga is from the 80's it has a n enormous impact in pop culture, many manga and anime that came out after have been influenced by it, a lot mangaka have reference Jojo's too in their stories. Like, a lot of the tropes from modern stories actually come from Jojo's, I mean, the "It's that a mf jojo reference!?" meme exist for a reason lol.

You have to open your mind to the bizarreness lol, but being fr, it's called jojo's "BIZZARE" adventure for a reason. I dropped Jojo a loooong time ago when I first started anime, but then I watched it years later and was open-minded. And now it's in my top 5. A dumb reason to keep watching is to say "it gets better", but fr every single part is better than the last, Araki learns from his mistakes and he cooks, so if u just slightly liked part 1, then u will most likely enjoy every part.

Just so you guys know, the openings start to change the animation while things get revealed in the story, so you might want to check them, but maybe with a guide or so because you can get spoiled with context, also endings are pretty good and safe to watch at any moment. The endings are actually songs that they licensed to use in the anime, Araki, the author, is a big fan of western music and he had use it as inspiration throughout the story, be it with characters names, name of places etc, I mean, Dio's name is a clear reference to the band called Dio. Hopefully you guys can check them out!

It still makes sense without seeing the previous parts; you just lose some of the deeper history. Each part is different. Some can be good, some can be bad. Araki is a great writer, but I've always viewed him as an artist first then an author. Because just by looking at his artwork, you can tell how much of a deep appreciation he has for the arts and for fashion especially. His characters are even posed as models, painted in these bold and vibrant colors that are constantly shifting every piece. His sense of fashion and design is by far the best in the industry. Exorbitant, expressive, exaggerated, and eclectic. Its loud and subversive. Genuinely beautiful designs. His color palette is so cool too, I haven't seen anyone use those tones and shades of color before. Its also super vibrant and saturated with crazy contrasts. The anime does a great job emulating this boldness by taking stylistic liberties like using bizarre and dramatic coloring in certain scenes and on characters. One example being, the coloring in the last fight with Jojo and Dio was super yellow/gold with darken shadows. The series does this very often, but it never gets old.

In some future seasons the openings do change slightly as the story progresses, but that's harder to keep track of when you're not watching the openings with the episode. The 1993 OVA's are adaptations of only certain parts of the manga, the anime that started in 2012 that we're watching here is the only adaptation that starts at the very beginning of the story. They're still very well made though, the animation is better at times than the modern version imo. But all of JoJo's is peak, even part 1 which is widely considered the "worst"

Im really late on this reaction, but I used to be super into JoJo's. Someone has probably already commented this, but the mangaka for JoJo's enjoyed listening to music in English. He is so obsessed with it that he names people and powers after music references. A few music reference in this episode: Dio Brando is named after the musician Ronnie James Dio from multiple bands like the band Dio. Erina is named after the Beatles song "Eleanor Rigby". Danny is named after the Loggins and Messina song "Danny's Song". Unfortunately, this has caused the anime to have different names when localized outside of Japan. P.S. some people think Jonathan (JoJo) is named after The Beatles song "Get Back" but it has been debunked from Araki himself, because he named Jonathan after a restaurant he would have meetings with his editor. P.S. The JoJo's manga began in 1987 and it tried to adapt the manga 2 times, once as a movie (the first 9 episodes, it was a complete failure that it was never released outside of theaters), and once as an OVA series for a specific arc (it was okay but a lot of content was removed).

You stopped 2 eps before a groundbreaking episode lol, not even joking, absolute peak. It's understandable to have this opinion, the start is very weak compared to the rest. I also dropped it before, but I love it now. That's why fans say "not yet" for so long to the geks. It's not really cringy if you accept that it is supposed to be all over the top, fun and just bizarre because that's the charm of the series, not really cringy imo, and I find some of One Piece very cringy. U just have to understand that it's different and be open-minded, and it gets better with each part by a lot. Then u most likely will enjoy it if u say u really want to. And if u stick with it, it definitely has a lot of groundbreaking plot, characters, and moments in Jojo that are iconic and impressive.

Understandable, but that's just Jojo being bizarre, crazy shit is gonna happen. I also didnt really like the tree guys. Still, one of them has actually depth, ideologies, and great dialogue that made him really interesting tho, so u can really see that Araki can write quality characters if he wants to. Jojo has a very different structure than most shows, so I think that if u remove expectations and are open minded, then it's easier, because it is very different from the traditional storytelling imo. That's why a lot of people are put off by it, because it's so different.

The writing definitely shows its age. But it's also one of these things that when you come back after having watched all of Jojo, you end up enjoying far more than on your first watch. It's so different in comparison to the rest but also unique in its own way.

Ah, gotcha. Yeah, the part 2 ending boils down to crazy luck. You just kinda have to embrace the ass pull/luck there or you won't dig it. That is the only part that ends like that tho, so you don't have to worry about that again if you didn't care for it. I will also say, you kinda have to buy in a bit with the crazy, over the top stuff. If you don't, you aren't going to enjoy it too much. Which is why it's not for everyone

Parts 1 and 2 are not an accurate representation of jojos as a whole. The show changes drastically throughout the series. It's unfortunate that Part 1 is the introduction, because it's practically a different show from part 3 onwards. Keep an open mind. I can't guarantee that you won't find Jojos cringy. However, I can guarantee that each part will keep you on your toes and the story will get much better. You just have to stick it out through the lows.

I’m really looking forward to the day you guys watch Gintama when you feel ready 😊 At first, the vibe might feel a bit unusual or even confusing, but personally, I don’t think there are many shows that stay with you the way this one does. It’s mostly silly and comedic, but at the same time it gives you life lessons and really emotional moments. Honestly, there are probably other series with more intricate storytelling, like Attack on Titan, but Gintama is just such a unique show that really sticks with you.

Interesting first episode! I did not expect it to be like this at all, but I’m sure it’s only gonna get more bizarre lol. The art style is super unique too, I really like how the characters look. I’m not gonna lie though, I don’t understand a single character yet… they’re either doing the most or making the dumbest choices 😭 but I’m gonna trust the process.
