Aesun doesnt have any ownership of the resturant! When she and Geum were fighting about paying to go to japan she dropped out of her quarter of ownership to give her money to go. The aunties were trying to tell her to stay and keep her name on the restaurant name but she kept denying them. When Geum is crying in japan it has that little audio flashback of her yelling at aesun about only selling street food so we can kinda assume she realized after seeing the photo she realized her mom was probably going to be a partial owner of the resturant but now is still selling food on the street but outside the restaurant.

Geums timeline does also get a little confusing but in the beginning of the episode she is studying abroad in japan and then when it moves to 1990 and she's in her new apartment, she is officially back in Korea. shes just renting out a room from a random family's house in Seoul because its affordable aesun, gwansik, and eun are all still in jeju too. They didn't move to the mainland theyre just in an apartment building now

It’s not that Geummyoung’s trying to justify her surroundings or that this is what she’s used to or whatever, it’s that she sees the humanity of the neighborhood and appreciates it for what it is even if it’s not much and “seems” dangerous on the outside. Remember how Aesun and Gwansik had to sell off their entire house to pay off her study abroad program in Japan? The fact that her bf can go study abroad in the fricking US (!) shows *just* how rich he is in comparison to most Koreans, which is why his comments about the neighborhood being “like Harlem”/how his area’s so much better to live in is both insensitive and offensive from Geummyoung’s POV. Like ok HE can afford to live in Gangnam (it’s like the Upper West side of NYC or midtown)— but not everyone else can, which is why she tells him that he doesn’t really know Seoul. So to correct Cannon, *he’s* the one who’s being out of control, not Geummyoung. Classic privileged rich boy yk And Jackson’s right, this relationship isn’t over yet 😭

Geums 'overreation' to her boyfriend wanting her to live in a better place comes from her being too poor and projecting. She knows she should be living somewhere safer and cleaner but to hear it from someone who came from money and doesn't have to worry about how to make ends meet probably just made her feel hopeless so she defaulted to snapping at him. I love the emphasis on the tricycle and stickers on the pole and the kid clothes hanging to show that yeah, even though it’s not the best place to live, people do still have lives there. Not everyone has the same privilege. He is just ignorant, which is not necessarily bad, just shows how different they actually are, foreshadowing possible future issues.

the main thing that annoys geum-myeong is that her bf is acting almost as if she has a choice on where she can live— he comes from money so he can’t fathom why anyone would want to live in a lower income neighborhood and completely disregarding the fact that not everyone has the means to choose otherwise. he means well, but lacks a bit of EQ in that aspect. i think it’s also the fact that he’s generalizing all the people that live in the neighborhood as if they’re all criminals and ppl who are “sick in the head”, but to geum-myeong they’re people just like her that are doing their best to get by. it’s not that she was necessarily making excuses for where she’s living, but she’s genuinely finding joy in the simple, small things like you guys mentioned her parents do, which she tries to share with her boyfriend only for him to in her eyes criticize it

Back then in South Korea, it was a huge downgrade for them to move from their own home (though its in the country side) to an apartment. You could never own an apartment unit, therefore that means they are paying monthly rents, compared to a home they owned (land on it included, thus the high price they were able to get to send Geum-myung to Japan).

Also, though rude AF as their son treats his parents they way he is, you also have to put yourselves in his shoes too. It doesn't excuse his attitude, but to be always compared to the "golden girl", seeing his parents struggle (though later they will reap what they sow, in a good way), and also live a childhood where he is extremely poor too, that hits hard. Not defending him, but just compassion for the other perspective ya know?

I think in this instance she reacted out of anger and feeling disrespected, and him in his consideration ended up being inconsiderate. If you notice as they were walking up the hill, she kept on telling him about how excited she was to show him her place and the beautiful Christmas tree she gets to see everyday walking up and down those hill. She couldn't wait to share these things she enjoys with him, and he basically cuts her off. Asking her why she would pick a slump like that and not a nicer place. (considering where she came from growing up it was very inconsiderate and disrespectful). So his words ended up bruising her rather than comforting her. I definitely think he could have said that better (and yes he does come from riches and comfort, so that doesn't help his perspective).

To clarify where people are.. Ae-sun, Gwan-sik and Eun-myeong are still in Jeju. Gwan-sik is a fisherman which i think is why they are still there and the aunties are all there. They just sold the house and moved to a smaller apartment. Geum-myeong, is back to Korea but in Seoul (mainland) after her study abroad program in Japan. She's back to seem to finish her college degree at SNU. Also she just had an argument with Yeom-bom, they didn't break up.

it’s just one of those things where we’re used to seeing jeju as the more impoverished small fishing villages that we didn’t get to see the bigger town and city parts of it that grew overtime! a few other reactors i’ve watched think they moved to the mainland too.

Totally agree that the son needs to show more respect because no kid should be talking to their parents like that, but I also really appreciate how realistic the writing is. In a more romanticized version of this show, Ae-sun and Gwan-sik would have perfect kids. But instead he’s a very real teenage boy, especially a middle child who’s grown up in his sister’s shadow. That doesn’t excuse his attitude at all, but it does make it understandable. Imagine being ripped out of your childhood home, shoved into a tiny apartment, and watching your parents sacrifice everything for your sister’s future while nobody expects much from yours. He’s bratty, entitled, and rude, yes, but it fits because it encapsulates a kid acting out from resentment, insecurity, and feeling overlooked.

I get that Yeong-beom is technically coming from a place of concern, but don’t overlook why Geum-myeong reacted the way she did. It’s not just what he said, it’s how and when he said it. She was super excited to show him her world, pointing out things like the Christmas tree and trying to make the moment feel nice, and instead of meeting her there he immediately focuses on what’s wrong with it. When you’ve grown up the way Geum-myeong has, that doesn’t feel like concern, it just feels like judgment. And honestly considering how long Yeong-beom has known her, he should understand her background and how sensitive that kind of comment would be. There’s already such a clear wealth gap between their lives, so in that moment it probably just made her feel small or embarrassed. So yeah her reaction wasn’t insane at all, I think it was a pretty natural mix of pride and hurt.

Ae-sun and Gwan-sik's kids in my POV are so comfortable expressing their true feelings that sometimes it can be quite rude or come off as bratty because that's just how safe they feel around their parents. They don't get punished for how they feel, they get punished when they do bad things. The son pissed me off at first too when I first watched the show but I kinda felt a bit pissed with Ae-sun's actions in the first few episodes and also with Geum-myeong! I think the author just like showing the annoying parts of the characters first then making you fall in love with them.

Just adding onto the comments about Geum-myeong. I get the bf’s comments it wasn’t malicious but Geum-myeong was raised to be independent and take pride in building a life for herself. She likes that she managed to have a small apartment for herself by working hard for it. Yes she cannot rely on her parents because they’re poor, that much is obvious, but also she isn’t the type of person that wants to. She just wasn’t raised that way. If anything her bf is less free than she is because he relies on his parents’ money. He of course cares about her wellbeing but his concern is quite ignorant :)

When her boyfriend talked trash about her neighborhood and the people who live there, the camera cut to a tricycle and some clothes hanging out to dry, just everyday stuff that showed these are normal people. He judged them without really understanding, which is why Geumyeong took it personally, it did highlight the fact that they come from very different backgrounds. His concerns are very valid but her family had to sell their house and move, and she’s already feeling guilty about being the reason for that. So when her rich bf, who comes from privilege, casually suggests moving as if it’s simple, I think she felt frustrated, obviously she would if she could.

TBH i'm on geum myeong's side. yeah, i get where hes coming from but he IS showing his classism and internalised bias coming from a rich family. he has the assumption that a poor area = dangerous and filled with immoral people which is something she would never be okay with. a big part of geeum myeong's character is the empathy and love she has for people in rough situations, especially money wise (like the old woman selling food on the street). where other people see danger and immorality, she sees people trying their best. the shots show a stark difference in their world views- he sees the rubbish on the streets, the crumbling walls, the missing posters but she sees the child's tricycle, stickers lovingly placed on the lamp pole, laundry carefully hung to dry. he isnt wrong for being worried about his gf but theyre just inherently incompatible on the basis of their upbringing imo

Not once does she say they’re over, and it’s not framed that way. They just had an argument. That’s all I was clarifying. I wasn’t saying anything about what happens later, whether they break up later, or whether they end up together. You already watched this episode, and what I clarified is something that happened in this episode and was meant to be understood from this episode. I don’t think that’s the actual issue. What the guy was saying sorta indicates he looks down on people who isn’t as financially affluent ( not intentionally but it’s clearly an embedded perspective of him). And as someone growing up poor the last thing they need is to be judged on where they live.
