DID YOU SEE THE 15K COMMENTS ON GEK NEWS

Dasha

thank you for saving me from what I was watching right now

cozo

541 and 543 not 441 443 btw

cozo

peak is here

SavDog23

We in the ep 540s btw geks, not 440s.

Error445

I just wanna quickly shout out the CXB-Andrus channel. It’s Carter and his wife’s channel who alongside there friend have posted some anime content. They’re checked out a bunch of first anime episode such as haikyuu, one piece, death note, hxh and bunch more. They’ve also recently posted their reaction to the amazing world of one piece. And they both girls seem to really enjoy one piece I expect more of that to come to the channel. Also the baby is watching too (well maybe not watching but either way aha) anyways I just saw there channel on my recommend home page for YouTube. I recommend you guys checking it out!

Joey

Hating vs being fine with FI is just an IQ test tbh

Dasha

tbh after you said that impel down is trash I stopped trying to guess your next move. happy that you are enjoying fishman island at some level tho

Dasha

thank god I didn't leave a comment before googling this, but I initially thought that it's so dumb when you said that fish lay eggs😭 in my native language fish lay "caviar" lmao

SavDog23

For me, Fishman Island is a solid B-tier arc with a few goated moments and great lore. Same rating goes for the next arc too. The way I look at it, these first 2 Post-Timeskip arcs are neccessary to set-up the rest of the story, and it works because the arcs following them are nearly all S-tier imo.

PenutButerHelicopter

I like Fishmen Island, but I don't wanna hindsight merchant y'all so enjoy the arc!

shelby

aaahh I had no idea thank you 😭

Nene 🩷

Cannon…..imma ned you to get out that corner

Cannon Andrus

I can’t believe I forgot to press record episode 2 😭😭😭

Ben Everest

What was Cannon doing in the cuck corner that he had to turn the camera off 😦

charlie

dang that stinks sorry

SavDog23

BIG BUSINESS BORSALINO APPEARS

beannie

Funny how cannon said this in the intro, but Ange from Carlie & Ange said long ring long land became one of his favorite arcs after finishing it😭 lmao I guess when the op humor is right in your lane you can have arcs like that one as absolute favorites

cozo

is cannon cam not on in the 2nd ep?

cozo

rip

cozo

not one pace either

SavDog23

"We Sun Pirates are all about liberation and freedom." Let Fisher Tiger cook.

Lettuce

I don’t see him either 🥺

Dasha

hmm looks like jack didn’t quite put two and two together there… I’ll wait a few hundred episodes and see if the others pick up on it haha (or maybe im wrong and jack got better in fooling everyone and hiding his emotions)

Kylie

I have Fishman Island coming in at #5 of the arcs we’ve seen so far! I truly love this arc

cozo

fr 😭

Error445

This is a solid high C tier arc for one piece. Could be pushed to low B tier we’ll see after I finish this arc with you guys. Just compared to some heavy hitter arcs that are to come and some that we’ve seen it’s hard for it to compete due to animation, the original one piece pacing etc. I think if you enjoy this arc you’ll be really rewarded with all the arcs left to go!

Cairooo

No no twin u right

Cairooo

It’s become second nature to us atp

Dasha

yeah no side eye in the camera is not like jack and it seemed like he didn't remember about that part of the episode at all :( i though that realization will come like with sakazuki in ohara flashback but nah

Chris Schwirz

This arc has all the meat and potatoes but just needed some minor tweak overall just mid to above average imo

thorfinn

your next line is... "jojos in 1 hour"

Pudding

It for real felt like my heart fell when Tiger confessed he used to be a slave, his trauma is portrayed so well. The way he still insists that there are good humans, but at the same time, he has a certain deep resentment/hate for them in general due to trauma... like how he was a bit reluctant to hold Koala's hand. The conflicted state his heart must have been in. It's realistic, I'm happy Oda went that route.

˗ˏˋ Manayer ʚ ˖𓍢ִ໋🪷✧˚

Ahh, i love the parallels between Nami and Koala😞🧡🧡 The one who caused Nami so much suffering in her life was a fish-man, while the one who saved Koala was also a fish-man. Both of them were forced to wear a tattoo that symbolized their lack of freedom Nami had Arlong's tattoo, and Koala had the Celestial Dragons' mark. Later, they both changed it to something that represents their freedom: Koala with the Sun tattoo, and Nami with the tangerine and pinwheel tattoo that reminds her of her family. When Koala joined them, she was allowed to cry as a sign of her freedom and vulnerability because she was finally safe. Meanwhile, Nami stopped crying so she could protect her village.

Dale Cooper

Ok that Berserk shirt redeemed some takes if I'm being honest.

beannie

I literally paused the reaction to ask why you’re voice only in ep 2 lmao😭😭 it’s ok tho

Pudding

Maaaan... In One Piece, there's discrimination between fishmen and humans, but also between humans themselves, like in our world. It's depressing... why do humans feel the need to always be superior to someone of their own kind, just because of superficial differences like skin color for example? Even between men and women now that I think about it. The slightest difference is taken as an excuse to categorize, control, hurt, and hate. Humans as a species are so hopeless... Makes me wanna read some studies on this weird human need to control their own kind, to try to understand why we're like this. It's like, even if we all had the exact same appearance, skin color, hair, sex, everything, humans would always find a way to find differences, and the cycle would never end... why?

jrnoodles

Thanks Geks! It's interesting to see that Fisher Tiger knew it was wrong to hate humans, but in the end he still couldn't get over his hate.

Nanami's Wife

I know right😭😭 I was expecting like 2 side eyes from him😭

Nanami's Wife

No fr, after their Impel Down and Marineford rating I had to sit out for a sec😭😭

Pudding

UHM EXCUSE ME WHAT THE FUCK HAPPENED THERE?? I'LL GO SEE.

Chris Schwirz

If you go back to arlong park I’m pretty sure hachi don’t even do anything really wrong just a bystander. But yeah obviously slight retcon here

PenutButerHelicopter

Hachi starts showing up in cover stories where he meets Camie at around Alabasta so I think Oda intended him to be "changed" since then.

mina

KOALAAAA

mina

fishman island when we aren’t in the present is so PEAKK

Dasha

hmm it's a long and complex topic that involves evolutionary biology, neuroscience, psychology, social learning, culture, history, economic factors, and a lot more, but at the same time it's as simple as "it's because I don't know you folk". the most underrated one piece quote imo

Nanami's Wife

Fisher Tiger and Koala's interaction had me emotional. The fact the humans called the Navy to jump Fisher Tiger just because they're fishmen is so realistic. People will just call the police on you just for walking or playing outside just because of your race. Fisher Tiger deserved so much more. Him admitting he was a slave too 🥺 my heart😔💔

Ceci

he said he forgot to press record FAAAAAAA

Pace

This arc is objectively one of the worst adapted one piece Arcs in terms of pacing & quality, the episodes barely cover a single chapter so its WAY longer than manga which is more story dense & lore focused rather than action/reaction focused and it also flies by WAY faster in manga cause the anime added in so much of their own crap to extend it scene by scene. Not to mention toei's animation production was getting worse by the week so anime looks cheaply made & everyhting moves in typical toei slow motion

jrnoodles

Also, in french, épitome is pretty much pronounced like Jack said. So my headcannon is that it was mispronounced in english by someone very important way back when and no one dared to contradict so they changed it.

Kylie

Seeing past Jinbe go from “And you still want us to give humans a chance?” to literally saving Luffy at the risk of his own life in Marineford makes me so emotional

SavDog23

Yeah I'm just talking about the arcs in general, whether that's through the OG anime, One Pace or the Manga. I'm one that never had issues with the pacing on my first watch so FMI was always solid ~7/10 to me but also on rewatches/rereads it gets a bit better each time.

sil 🧸ྀི

this backstory is so sad fisher tiger was really one of the goats

sil 🧸ྀི

fishman island is a fun arc i dont hate it!!! i def have a lot more arcs below it in my tier list

Chris Schwirz

Odas best writing attribute isn’t foreshadowing like everyone says. It’s adaptive writing. He creates loose threads and is very good at adding them in places. This one def more preplanned than others tho

Ella

fisher tiger is one of the most goated characters in one piece. i know the anime pacing really drags, but fishman is one of my favorite arcs thematically. It's still very relevant to current times.

beannie

wish I could post the speed trying not to laugh gif rn

Mr. John Kagurabachi

I think Fisher Tigers story is so beautiful. Imagine this implication in the real world. Saving people for justice but refusing to take a blood transplant due to the same principled injustice he faced. goat type shit

cade-carter

FMI has so many goated moments, truly top tier moments, but the in between is mostly mediocre for OP standards. Still to this day i think Fisher Tiger has one of the best stories of all time

Mr. John Kagurabachi

LRLL is in Carlie and Anges top 5 arc. They rated it A tier lol. Tbf I think yall over hated it imo. It’s personally in my middle of packs. The comedy and slice of life just hit for me I guess. But I’m also a freak of nature who hates Zoro and think he’s super edgy and cringe like Sasuke. He’s the only stawhat with not goofy nature or whimsy.

Mr. John Kagurabachi

At 8:45 Wow I guess Garp must’ve trained these marines 🤭

Safaricat

THANK YOU CARTER!! I understand the Arlong hate but Arlong is the product of what has already transpired. i wouldn't even call him radical he's being a realist in this situation. McKay fixing it the long way sounds ideal and how it should be but we've seen that it doesn't always work in history, even in AOT. People always want someone to direct hate at and divide people. It's a sad truth of man.

EmlovesOP

guys seeing luffy listen to the story he really can't stand it... this show oda man

Safaricat

Arlong would never rat out Tiger. We protect our own.

christopher

Yeah, but all Arlong did was cause multiple islan in the East Blue to hate Fishmen and i think thats the main issue if he had directed the hate the right way that wouls be another stori.

John D. Acebes

Racism bad. Hate bad. Prejudiced killing bad. Fisher Tiger goat. Shameful blood cycle. Funny how that blood transfusion idea started because of gooner Sanji. 2 sides of revolutionary change: decisive militarized action vs diplomatic petitioning. Implications for contemporary problems is interesting. Main thing I wanted to highlight is the mirrors. How Fisher Tiger's Fish-Man District takeover mirrors Franky's Family in Water 7 somewhat. Jimbei vs Arlong under Tiger is like Ace vs Blackbeard under Whitebeard [Whitebeard and Tiger shotdown]. Koala def mirrors Nami as said and I agree it adds dimensions to the Arlong Park arc. Were things retconned? Idk if anything really changed. Arguable that maybe they should have been depicted going easier on Nami knowing their history with Koala, but I'd say this retrospective update highlights just how radicalized their hatred after their leader was killed. Implications to contemporary problems interesting. Hatchi's development being the most questionable is valid, but I think he always showed he was kind of a directionless goofball back then (being an idiot with Luffy. Hatchi is kinda Arlong's Zoro [getting-injured-all-the-time swordsman who were humbled by women [Kuina, rice ball girl, Camie]). Critique on animation is valid, and tbh I think the reading it first made it more tolerable with pacing. One Pace feels like it's carrying.

Jack

Thanks for the insight!

Jack

Top 5???? I don’t think we hate it, we just know it’s not good lol

Cannon Andrus

wtf are you talking about arlong isn’t radical? You stand for him absolutely clobbering an innocent child that was just the subject of slavery by the celestial dragons? Am I missing something here?

Safaricat

I would like to remind you that Nami said Hachi was always nice to her. Not all of the fishmen were horrible to her sure they were all part of the lie that deceived her but they weren't all cruel.

Safaricat

yes. clobbering a kid is wrong but at the same time if the roles were reversed he would have been clobbered and possibly treated worse at the same age. i know we're just seeing his actions but he is a product of humans treatment. Pirates were going to fishmen island and attacking and taking people. it's not an excuse but he's not trying to act any better than humans. Radical was Tiger freakin branding her that was extreme as hell.

kie___y1

Safaricat

it's difficult to direct hate the right way when that's exactly what Tiger did and he got turned in by the very people he tried to reunite with someone they care about. After 3 years of directing hate in the right direction that's the thanks they received??

Cannon Andrus

Also I’m just going to point out, fisher tiger recognized on his deathbed that he was wrong in some aspects about how he went about the conflict, and that queen orihime was right. Obviously long lasting change is hard to attain, but the moment you stop believing it’s possible it’s dead in the water. The point is yeah if you say it’s quote on quote, “unrealistic” then it is from that moment on. But it’s the people that do believe and choose to inspire rising generations that create lasting change in society and in our world. No it’s never going to be 100% perfect but the masses can change their views it’s happened in our own history so many times, and I guarantee you there’s been people like arlong that think it’s “unrealistic” until the unrelenting heroes actually achieve it

Jack

I do think the branding was radical, but it was a radical solution to an already radical problem (ie the slavery mark). Overall the branding probably won’t help because as a human she wouldn’t really be recognized as a Sun Pirate by humans so they would know she was a slave, but it also does prove that she “became” or was recognized as one of them by the crew. Obviously branding a child is radical but the situation isn’t normal either.

DonDuh103

Those episodes go by too fast? Fisher Tiger here one episode then Fisher Tiger not here🙁🙁🙁

DonDuh103

Cannon come back we can hear you but we can’t see you!!!!

Carter D. Andrus

I hope we both just see him as the product of the previous generations mistakes and not the solution😂😂 yes I see him as the product, and I can see him being a realist from his closed off point of view, but I do not think in any way that he is right

Grae

Why does it say 400's not 500's

kuza

kinda insane how low they made fisher tigers bounty 😭 like his feat was insane

Saki 🏴‍☠️✨❤️‍🔥

koala!! i cannot escape the scene of fisher tiger throwing his gun in the sea and her break down without shedding a few tears of my own 😭😭

kuza

koala 😢

kuza

the music !

Saki 🏴‍☠️✨❤️‍🔥

yeah carter, id say part of koalas 'creepy' look is probably what i would describe as unnerving, due to the fact that her smile doesnt reach her eyes often times since its a frequent fear response

beannie

After watching this backstory, knowing that Jimbei has lost so many people (in such tragic ways) who helped shape who he is today just breaks my heart. And despite everything he’s been through, he’s still someone so full of love for others and for what’s right, he’s one of the most admirable characters in op for me. That’s my unc fr 💙

StandedJosh

Yeah it's to mirror the same for humans; Koala and the 'compassionate humans' Fisher mentions.

kuza

mfs are bots

ainsley

to be honest, this arc isn’t one of my favorites. i think it has to do with the fact that the arcs before this were so incredible and emotional for me (this arc is definitely emotional too, but in a different way) and this arc definitely went in a completely different direction from previous. i think fishman island has a really good storyline, but i can’t help but feel like there are things missing between this arc and last arc, and personally it affected my enjoyment of the story. i also can’t stand sanjis character currently and how it actually impacts the storyline, i think it’s so overdone. there are some really great moments in this arc though, i won’t deny that.

Saki 🏴‍☠️✨❤️‍🔥

tigers end is always soooo freaking sad and frustrating, and it does hurt all the more to know that it was preventable, even at the end of the line :( but at the same time i can definitely understand his refusal of human blood...to have already been so mentally and physically abused in his experiences with them and then be forced to live off of blood from an unknown source, not knowing whether it comes from one who would support or level the same abuse upon him given the chance...i can see how it would feel like a violation, or an eternal itch under the skin. especially when adding upon the feeling that such a person/peoples could have any hand in your life, or hold over your body when youve already been branded once externally...to me i can see it feeling almost like an internal brand, after such experiences

Saki 🏴‍☠️✨❤️‍🔥

part of me also wonders if it wouldve made any difference at all had it been a known and somewhat more trusted source, such as koala...buttt i dont necessarily think it would, given the history regardless

Saki 🏴‍☠️✨❤️‍🔥

its worth mentioning that nami herself has referred to hachi as pretty much harmless on his own - he was never needlessly cruel to nami himself, but he was very much a bystander and follower

Jack

Obviously crazy than it’s not higher, but I guess he didn’t technically invade Mariejois so that makes more sense maybe

Saki 🏴‍☠️✨❤️‍🔥

also im no arlong lover or anything, but i will say hes much better than hordy already imo - as much as arlong hated humans, at the bare minimum he was shown actually caring about his own (his reaction upon finding everyone cut up by zoro) whereas hordy has demonstrated a major sense of superiority and disregard for everybody, his own men included (using the one standing next to him as a shield against zoro). arlong called his people brothers, and to hordy theyre just pawns

Dreamknight942

Peak backstory as always, and the complexity of Tigers feelings at the end will always be so interesting. Both frustrating but understandable

Safaricat

i definitely know it's happened in our own history because well i have to live that history everyday. I have to live with taking the bigger road and constantly being disappointed with how far we have supposedly come to turning on the TV and seeing a lunatic talk about how i don't need vaccines because of my race. when i mean it's unrealistic i mean it's cause it hasn't changed or happened already even though people believe and practice it and put forth the change it can all easily be reverted like it has been in recent history. it gets to a point of being frustrated which is why i totally understand what the fishmen are going through cause i go through it daily.

Safaricat

no definitely not the right way but it's an unfortunate truth that he is the product and he can't see it another way. what happened to him goes to serve as a product for the current youth as well. i've stopped trying to think of it as the right or wrong way because everyone learns differently and some people never learn there's just what works and what doesn't.

Sebastian Münzberg

Such an important comment! I also agree, one of the most pressing issues in the history of humanity. Also, people tend to forget how we treat animals, killing them by the trillions every year which is just atrocious. All because we feel superior and don't believe these sentient beings are worth moral consideration...

kuza

true but still

Safaricat

i don't have to have seen vinland to understand any of this. this is a real thing that happened and continues to happen everyday.

Saki 🏴‍☠️✨❤️‍🔥

p.s. ive already yapped a lot atp but i just want to add on that i dont think queen otohimes approach alone is necessarily /the/ way to do things, sm as that i would think both her and tigers methods go hand in hand, despite how they also oppose each other in the sense of those who try and make it out as though tigers actions reflect poorly on all fishmen and their peace talks - people need actionable change and visible progress past the talks that those in power have behind closed doors. how can anyone hope to move towards a brighter future when present cruelties go unaddressed? both were necessary, but ofc the powers that be would pit them against each other one way or another, lest they highlight each others strengths and their common goal too much

Nick K

Reminder: if you guys want to go back and watch Arlong Park after this, you can watch Episode of East Blue. It's a 2 hour episode that has a scene from the start of the show you've never seen, and also it does a summarized telling of the whole East Blue Saga. Really great watch

Nick K

Tiger is the goat because he had such deep prejudice from the horrors committed to him, but still marched back into that hell to save the other slaves of any race, and still did his best to try and shield future generations from his prejudice. The only person Tiger couldn't save from his prejudice was himself.

Saki 🏴‍☠️✨❤️‍🔥

jack real for that epitome pronunciation btw lol, pretty sure i also said it like that once in hs (reading pronunciation 🙂‍↕️) and got clowned on by my friends, lmao

Milochocodrink (Zoro's wife)

I just realized.... is the title supposed to be 541, 543? Same with the last batch. Edit: this was brought up like 5 times alrdy, sorry, my bad

Saki 🏴‍☠️✨❤️‍🔥

i actually hate how tiger tried so hard to not let his death impact the future, but the narrative became that humans refused tiger blood, rather than there just being none due to his rare blood type :((

Nick K

I wouldn't say anything with Hachi is a retcon. You guys may or may not have noticed but one of the trio of fishmen shouting goodbye to Koala and saying that she was a great human was Macro and his gang, the slave traders. Oda could've shown them as disliking humans, but they turned into trash that kidnapped humans and tried to kidnap and sell Camie. Oda had the opportunity here to write Hachi however he wanted but if he wrote Hachi as cruel to Koala that actually would have been out of character for him. Hachi in Arlong Park is trash who helps Arlong enslave the humans, but he's actually never cruel or racist during the entire arc. When he's not being ordered to do something bad he's always pretty happy and kind. When he meets Zoro and thinks he's a guest he's super nice to him and even offers to give him a ride. Among all the fishmen you see in that arc Hachi is maybe the only one who doesn't talk down to humans about him being a superior fishman.

Marcus D

Well said Nick

Marcus D

Modern animation with updated fight choreography too

Milochocodrink (Zoro's wife)

Wow, I love the intense discussions from everyone's perspective, and the fact that one piece can open up conversations like this. This isnt really a direct reply to anyones points, just my own side thoughts: Personally I feel that what Nami faced in Arlong Park is similar to what fishmen and arlong faced from humans/pirates consistently. And we can see how much hate that built up in Nami's heart as well. If it wasn't luffy helping to stop the cycle of hatred, Nami wouldn't be where she is now. A strong support system is so important to stopping the cycle of hatred. So even though I dont agree with and hate some of arlong's actions, I can't help feeling just as much compassion for him as I do for Nami.

ooAlmondMilk

If Koala gets reintroduced into the story later on and she doesnt get an happy ending, Im dropping this show forever

Hegataro

Fishman Island has some great lore and overall story-relevant stuff. The original anime adaptation's pacing unfortunately drags it to the bottom of the sea. I mean hell, you had to skip an entire episode here because Toei decided to put a Toriko crossover in the middle of Fisher Tiger's backstory. Imagine having to wait for a new episode week to week only to get hit with that. I don't have to imagine it because I experienced it first hand. Although it isn't entirely Toei's fault, because they ~were~ caught up to the manga. They should've made the decision to go to a seasonal release right after the time skip, rather than some 15 years later. But that's just me hindsight merchanting the business practices of a japanese production company. Hopefully, The Wit Piece, if it ever comes and gets here, redeems it in the eyes of people.

Dounia

Fishman Island is a great arc not enough praised for its purpose which is to denounce issues of our own society... this arc talks about racism, oppression, discrimination, the cycle of hatred, forgiveness versus revenge, hope for coexistence, leadership and responsibility, slavery, historical injustice and inherited will… It also mentions a lot of important elements of the story that will be relevant later on and to see people reducing such a meaningful arc to “bad pacing” or “goofy humor” is just lame and overall dumb af. I feel like now if anime is not about the animation or the fights it means it’s bad which is ridiculous.. of course if you compare Fishman Island to other arcs in One Piece there is better I’ll never deny that but it’s a really good arc and it’s sad people don’t understand that more !!

wanira 11

A lot of people ask why people feel the need to opress others, why racism keeps happening. I think a lot of it stems from fear sadly. Fear of what's different, fear of change. These are all very primal emotions but are also very shallow. This instict to judge immediately is very human, but can be solved by simple communication. If people would just try to understand eachother en get to know eachother. They would realize a lot of their fear is unfounded. Our differences are what makes us beautiful and interesting. One would think humans who went through evolution in the 21st century would understand that, but it seems history keeps repeating itself. We just have to keep trying, never close that door of communication. If we ourselves aren't capable of doing that. At least, teaching our kids to keep an open mind is the best way to go forward

Milochocodrink (Zoro's wife)

If I look at the parallels of otohime and fisher tiger; luffy is much more similar to tiger in the sense that he lives in the now and his feelings. the only difference is that luffy still has his childlike innocence, lack of prejudice, and the ability to forgive and love easily (robin/franky). These traits are all things that children can embody and tend to slowly lose as they grow up. And that’s because hate and prejudice does poison the mind/heart. As I rewatch when I’m older, I feel a lot more compassion for this fictional world. Now that I personally have felt the joyful innocence of childhood contrasted with the hate that can build over experiencing years and years of prejudice/pain. In some ways the hardest pains have taught me the most beautiful gifts like compassion. OP gives me hope and fills my heart with love; which is what fisher tiger and arlong needed in their darkest moments. I will always love this show and everything it represents.

Grae

To those who don't know Carter and Bradlynn started nightly One Piece over on their patreon C x B today!!

Error445

Yeah word around is apparently he was gooning again or something idk 😞

Milochocodrink (Zoro's wife)

McKay brings up an interesting point. What I’ve loved about introducing OP to so many people is seeing how each and everyone of them resonates with and love different arcs. Oda manages to touch people in so many different ways, and it makes reactions/rewatches so unique every time. Love that you all bring unique opinions; You guys are my favorite rewatch!

Grae

I don't want to sound like a broken record, but this arcs pacing really does bring it down to one of my least favourite OP arcs. There are like 2 really great moments in this arc with Fisher Tigers backstory being one of them, and besides that there isn't really much else but Sanji gags and the classic One Piece filler. I'm really enjoying watching this arc with you guys though as it is much better paced, plus I can admit that SOME of the Sanji gags are funny but mostly cos Carter cracks up every time lol.

Grae

Also why does this arc give us Caribou and Vander Decken in the same arc, it really is goon piece 😭😭

Milochocodrink (Zoro's wife)

Honestly if the geks said OP everyday we would also show up for 15k comments hahaha. Love the passionate jojo fanbase

wanira 11

I love how Oda didn't go the cookie cutter route there. It would have been the easy route to go with: everyone forgives and they all live happily ever after. But if we want to go for realism, Tiger would be too traumatized to do so. He stood by his principles, despite the fact that the blood transfusion would have saved his life. I'm not saying he's right, but it's completely understandable and more realistic.

wanira 11

People who dog on this arc so much rub me the wrong way. Precisely because of the importance of the themes displayed in this arc. You can tell this arc was also a long time in the making, with the amount of building up to it has gone beforehand. This arc has a really important, and sadly still really relevant message that Oda wanted to get out. To say this arc is bottom five is to discredit that in my opnion. The way Oda decides to end this arc (I won't give anything away) is so beautiful and poignant and I can't wait for the geks to see it

Hegataro

It definitely feels like Hachi joined Arlong only due to the heightened emotions felt directly after Tiger passed away. Combine that with Hachi being laid back and a little dumb, it's no wonder Arlong managed to sway a few of the even well-meaning fishmen to his cause. Also Nami does say that in spite of Hachi being with Arlong, he's one of the few that was kind to her.

Marcus D

I love that cannon immediately jumped in on the hachi guessing game, fully invested 😂.

Hegataro

I think there's a nice little bit of poignant character study of Hody Jones in here as well. Hody's crew are called the "New Fishman Pirates", in honor of the old Fishman Pirates. But that's not what Fisher Tiger's crew was called. They were called the Sun Pirates. They were only called the Fishman Pirates by racist humans. Hody is a poser. None of his actions are particularly Tiger-like. Hell, they're not even Arlong-like. At least Arlong saw his fellow fishmen as brothers, not as meat shields.

T.Yaseen

Koala💔💔, no 11 year old should ever feel like that. One Piece did really well in showing how tragic that whole situation was.

Marcus D

Koala’s village new Fisher tiger was coming becuase the sun pirates were probably spotted at near by islands, saying they were going to drop off koala and those islands could have contacted her island ahead of time. The navy had outposts all over the world, so with all of that considered, it’s realistic that the marines were able to get him as he arrived.

Exactly! And the fact that each uploaded we get at least 10 comments about the pacing is infuriating… like we get it the pacing is not great, but there is so much more to talk about and so much more to dissect about this arc than the pacing… for me personally how deep the story is and the kind of message it brings to the world and to the people who watch One Piece is worth all the bad pacing in the world !

Ante

Yeah, this does add a lot to Arlong Park, but also in a meta kind of way. When the fishmen first appear in East Blue, I've seen a fair few reactions be repulsed by their hideousness/ugliness/designs. I don't judge anyone for it one way or another cause it's a show and assessing character looks is part of it. I think my own reaction was similar but I don't really remember. But anyway, after getting this context, whenever I see a new reactor dog on them for how they look, there's just a silent feeling of "Damn they must have been hearing this all their lives". It just hits different, which is kinda sad/cool.

Ante

Ain't no way Carter is rewatching One Piece when he hasn't finished the first lap lmao. Is bro trying to die?!

Ante

Tiger's logic at the end was so visceral. Imagine the physical and mental aguish required to reject the blood in that moment. The suffering he must have endured to where death was preferrable. Oof.

handsome squidward

for some reason I think Cannon's commentary is extra funny when there's no face cam lol

Tyrell D. Rose

Zoro being compared to Sasuke might be one of the hottest takes on One Piece, the guy is goofier than Nami and Robin He can miss a bridge while standing right at the entrance He almost got “kidnapped” because he slept on the wrong ship at Sabaody, he cut their ship in half and told them, “It’s fate,” because he’s a dumbass 😂

EmlovesOP

100 percent agree but at this point why are u even watching the show… rewatching this arc is clearly showing strong themes oda wants to bring to the show

EmlovesOP

Hearing him say he is fighting the devil voice in his head 😟 ugh def sad

ahmad

Bro is transcending

greyxwaren

you guys are conflating arlong with hody which this arc is trying to differentiate between. arlong, fisher tiger, otohime and hody. fisher tiger strives to end the discrimination between humans and fishmen while actively freeing slaves regardless of race, his role is more present active, otohime is trying to change the view points of her people by speeches and she’s more future dependent. arlong personally experienced discrimination and came to the realization that no matter what humans will never accept them or respect them unless they use fear and dominate by strength. hody on the other hand never experienced any type of discrimination by humans, he genuinely believes he’s genetically superior and his hatred for humans is him weaponizing the stories he hears (regardless if they’re true or not) and adopts that baseless hatred to push his race superiority. he would refuse any sort of diplomatic solution if it means peace between races, he’d cause chaos to keep it going. so hody would be the one to rat out fisher tiger not arlong. arlong would not stage a race discrimination event to justify his hatred for humans, his hatred is caused by something real. this is not to say arlong is right or he’s a hero or eve a good person, his demeanor after fisher tiger’s death was the hatred he harbored for human and couldn’t find it in himself to give the a chance, it was all pushed to 100 and he felt vindicated in feeling that way, since things turned out exactly how he thought they would. and this is beside fisher tiger’s and otohime’s belief that this prejudice that was harbored for thousands of years will not be fixed in a day, his solution is make them scared, take what you want, fuck segregation, any fishman can go wherever the fuck they want and no one can dare tell them otherwise.

To quote the goat Lorn au Arcos from Red Rising series (death begets death begets death) - Hate begets hate begets hate. Despite breaking the cycle with Koala, Fisher Tiger couldn't overcome his own trauma and his hatred for humans but unfortunately Arlong didn't listen to what he said, only taking in the pain and anger from his leader's death which reaffirmed his attitude, leading to what he did to Nami's village. Overall, this arc for me is about understanding each other. Humans cannot get over their prejudice against fishmen and fishmen cannot get over their prejudice against humans. We only ever see and assume the worst in each other because it's easier than taking the time, like Otohime's methods, to see the goodness in people. If not for Luffy and the crew saving her, Nami could have easily hated fishmen for the rest of her life (and she would be valid in her feelings) she could have assumed the worst in Jimbei after he revealed he knew Arlong but she's sitting down taking the time to listen his painful history. It's not always the viable option as Fisher Tiger took immediate action and he saved so many people, but he understood that fighting against his own inner demons is important despite the way he died. It's the very long game but it's the correct one, and such a nuanced approach to discussing racism deeply embedded in society. Sadly it's very prevalent in today's society but I'm glad the message is there nonetheless :)

Daniella

Also I don't necessarily think Hachi's a retcon, although I understand the point but realistically one little girl is not enough to change his attitudes on humans. Growing up in the fishman district he suffered racism from pirates and then later in life watched his leader die as a consequence of that same racism. From his perspective Koala is "one of the good ones" but that doesn't change the large shadow of hatred or rather dislike he has for humans and what they've done to him hence why he probably joins Arlong. Hachi was always more of a passive "enemy" which also explains why Nami's alright with him, if he was more on Arlong's level she wouldn't even give him the time of day.

sigma4k

Wrong episodes in title btw idk if anyone else pointed it out

SeCo D. Raw

it's def a redcon and oda isn't ashamed of talking about it lol jinbei was intended to be just another warlord enemy/villain of luffy in the early stages when oda thought that one piece was a 5 year project

Marcus D

The first episode title was 100% click bait becuase that wasn’t even Kizaru’s name at that point 😂. His real name is Borsalino and at that time he was a Vice admiral. Once you become an admiral you are given a code name, and Borsalino’s was Kizaru. Also fun fact: Borsalino is a type of Italian hat and is what Kizaru was wearing in this flashback lol.

Tristoon Cartoons

This arc is decisive because it had to follow up sabaody-marineford so it was always going to have a lot to live up to

Jack

Indeed, very decisive 🤭

Nouf

This is my first time rewatching fish-man island in almost 13 years, and wow the story is hitting me much harder! Given I was just a child who was growing up in a city with a relatively heterogeneous population when I first watched the arc, I don’t think I understood the ongoing theme just focused on the adventure aspect of it. Revisiting this as an adult made me extremely emotional (I was eating through my tears lol) and certainly made me appreciate this arc more!

Maryam Ali

You guys always have really good insights. Great connection between the way Ace and Fisher Tiger died unnecessarily because of their choices/trauma

Isla

i keep forgetting that kizaru is supposedly italian LOL

Pudding

I feel exactly the same!! I'm rediscovering so many arcs

Pudding

One can only imagine what horrifying things those Celestial Dragons do up there..

Pudding

Omggg you're right, I didn't think about it this way

Pudding

I'm gaining newfound appreciation for Fishmand Island arc through this rewatch with the geks. Felt the same about Skypiea.

Pudding

Mmm, interesting insight, I think I agree

Kylie

I just watched their reaction to The Breathtaking World of One Piece and it was magical. Bradlynn reacted the same way Carter did when he saw it for the first time😭

cozo

one pace is just goated

cozo

ik this isnt one pace tho

Enma

Havent been able to watch like 80% of the vids this week, and now I have 4+ hours of content. Gonna be a good night, thank you geks 😋😋

farkzzy

I started two rewatches before I was caught up. never enough one piece

charlie

I think it would be cool after the arc if you guys went and looked at some of the panels and art of the manga. I'd be happy to put it together for you guys but Oda has some great arc and honestly I think this might have been one of his best arcs in terms of pure art in the manga

charlie

I commented this before the intro but honestly like I say here this might be my favorite arc in terms of the art in the manga

charlie

I have yet to see long ring long land a single time in the anime even on every reaction channel I watch I'm like "alright im finally gonna watch this arc with them" and then I always end up just skipping it lol I read it once in the manga and that has been it

charlie

"what will you have... in 500 years" that made me die laughing

charlie

i'd say the stuff happening here is more a retcon for his character and why he didn't bring stuff up he was always kind of dumb and goofy even back then but I do not believe Oda even considered this backstory when he was writing Arlong park after all the series was only going to be roughly 5 years long at the start

Enma

yes i was staring at him for like 2 mins to see a reaction. Hopefully he just forgot and will remember after seeing ... again and make that connection.

Marcus D

Even when he first appears in the anime, the voice actor says his name in a strong Italian accent lol.

Enma

Carter you still have time to rename your kid to Fisher Tiger

cozo

they gonna secretly drop their binge to all of part 1 and part 2 soon bro, its coming

It’s ok guys, the mini binge is gonna be epic next week!🕺🕺

@sil omg I rewatch their op reactions so much lol😭 I’ve literally been planning to rewatch their reactions to my favorite eps of marineford these days

If you are part of a marginalized group, Fisher Tiger's character hits even harder because you know Arlongs, Jimbeis, and Tigers 😭. The way people deal with trauma and oppression is such a profoundly personal experience. We see Jimbei as a balanced character who has processed the trauma. Arlong internalized and projected the hatred. But Tiger recognizes morality and shows restraint in his actions, but with the torture he endured... he hasn't actually processed the trauma. He's only contained it and refused to let it cause harm to others, and that limits what he can work on internally. Tiger was the only one of the three (tiger, jimbei, arlong) that was actually a slave and reduced to property. So he can reject the system morally, but can't psychologically free himself from what the "humans" did to him when they tried to strip him of his sense of self. Accepting help from a human (the blood transfusion) would symbolically reverse the roles in a way he wouldnt be able to tolerate. Yet, he continually worked in direct opposition to his emotions for the sake of the children. As for Hachi's mindset - i think he was just loyal to Arlong. Unlike Hordy, they all saw each other as brothers and stood by each other. He cared for Koala, but he with what happened to Tiger, it's easy enough to separate "Koala" from "the rest of the humans" and choose to act on the anger of losing a brother at the hands of humans by going along with Arlong's plans. He's not without fault, but I think Nami can see he's changed. He was kinda just a goofy guy in the Arlong Park arc anyways lol.

This is coming up on when I started watching roughly around MAYBE 5-10 minutes of the episodes... MAX. I was working part-time and still didn't have the time for that shiz. Still, some unforgettable stuff for me, and I have some really positive nostalgia for that time hahah
