Ok, I see what people are saying about the english subs now. When Erina is holding the baby right at the end and talks about how no one will know about what jojo did, the direct translation into english from the spanish subs is: “The baby I carry inside my womb will know the story of his father”. Meanwhile the crunchyroll translation made the line a bit more vague I guess

Yeah, I love Jonathan but it's undeniable Part 1 fronted Dio a lot, even more than Jonathan. Even in the OP, Dio has a montage while Jojo's name is being chanted lol. Culturally, Dio is actually remembered more than him and memed a lot too. I think it's because of the extremes he did during the part.

Part 1 was great the first time I watched it, but it's not that interesting on a rewatch. For me, the reason is that it lacks some depth in the story and the fights that the other parts have. Which is good news, because it gets even better.

I am absolutely NOT part of the group that disses on part 1, but that said, once you get further into the show... you'll feel it. Also, in case no one told you guys: Jojo is a very old series. Part 1/Phantom Blood was published in the late 80's. Jojo has been published continuously from then, forwards to today. One of Jojo's biggest strengths is its ability to change with the times. Part 1 is a very simple and traditional 80's manga story: big hunk with a heart of gold fights evil with punching. As the story moves forward, you'll see it gradually grow and evolve with the times. I think a lot of the dislike for part 1 comes not from the idea that it's bad, which it certainly is NOT, but the fact that it just feels very simple and dated, which I have to admit to being true. That said, I'm glad you guys enjoyed it, because despite your disbelief, most people would agree it just gets better from here.

I felt the exact same way as cannon after this episode. I got comfortable with Jonathon because it’s “jojos” bizarre adventure, so I didn’t even consider the idea that he would die. Just trust the process though because there is much much much much much better things to come

Well I guess you'll have to watch and find out Also not sure if the Geks just kind of noticed or actually realized that the intro for this episode was an alternate version that had added sound effects for what was actually happening in the opening. As the show goes on a season will have its opening but then it will change based on certain events, so people will want you to watch the openings once you are a certain amount into each season so you get to experience the originals and then the altered versions organically

Man, Jonathan really is a saint. He forgave Dio even at the end there, even went out hugging his head. Dio himself seemed shaken when he actually died. I don't know how Jojo could forgive him after everything but the author probably believed that them spending their youth as brothers (even if a little fake) was enough. I doubt even Dio managed to fake being a perfect son or brother all that time, so I can believe they're actually close to some extent.

Ngl part 1 on a rewatch has definitely been more enjoyable. Personally, on a first watch i just don't think i was used to the ridiculousness and i took it a bit too seriously so watching in hindsight helped a lot. Lol the upset about Jonathan is real though, he wasn't my type of mc i like to stick with in a show but he was very honourable, his death is quite unexpected but very well done. I'm so excited for the next part though you guys are gonna love it :) i'm gonna say it...trust the process 🤣

Araki(the mangaka) had some serious balls writing this in the 80's. First, having it take place outside of Japan, and then having the main cast not being Japanese was very rare at the time. Then, within the first year of serialization he kills the main character. Crazy work that could've made the series crash and burn. Somehow tho, he pulled it off and it's still getting serialized 39 years later

He never said it but context clues implied it. Of course it can be interpreted differently. The first time Dio died, Jonathan just wanted to forget all about the mess and in episode 8, he still cried for him even though he declared he won't feel guilty. What he wanted was to remove Dio's evil from the world, and now in Episode 9, he accepted their weird friendship in death. To some extent, I think Jonathan felt responsible for Dio being a vampire. He was the owner of the mask prior and Dio was pushed to using it (not saying Dio didn't do it himself but he was desperate). To me, the hug here and combined with George dying words ("don't blame Dio"), that passes visually as forgiveness as weird as it is.

It’s my first time doing this, but I’ve caught up on all your reactions and it’s been really fun. I actually liked this conclusion to Phantom Blood more than I expected. I had a feeling the main character would change at some point, but I did NOT expect Jonathan to actually die which is sad. At the same time though I get why they did it, and I agree with Carter that it’s an epic setup for what’s next (kinda like a prequel to the real story). The way Jonathan goes out with Dio is really meaningful too. He stays true to who he is until the very end, still choosing compassion even toward the person who ruined his life, and making sure it ends with him so it can’t continue. And then with Erina surviving and saving the baby (and her unborn child), it feels like his legacy lives on. I wasn’t SUPER attached to Jonathan since we only had nine episodes with him and he already reached his peak, but because of that this ending feels more purposeful in a way. I’m still sad, but it makes me excited for what’s next!

Part 3 is the only JoJo’s part that had an anime adaptation way back in 1993. It’s my personal favorite part, but part 2 is also fantastic

The 1993 OVA is fantastic, it has even better animation quality at some points compared to the mainline modern anime. I'd seriously recommend them to react to some clips when they're done with part 3
