An easy way to identify between a shikai and a bankai is from its release command. Shikais have some unique release command and the name. All Bankai release command is just "Bankai".

It might be because when I originally watched bleach as a kid, it was airing on TV. I watched in Dub and I feel like they used the word “honor” instead of “pride” in that scene. that might be a mistranslation but also could be the case for the subtitles here. The original meaning might be something we don’t have a direct translation for in English. Small side note, I think the soul society is supposed to be mirroring medieval Japan, same kind of cultural standards. where ones honor and social status are in the forefront of your character as a person. I feel like in western culture those two things are important just not in the same way.

Love the discussion today guys. Pride, honour, it's all very black and white. Soul Society is just that(very black and white) and like many other such structures that maintain such a rigid system it makes it murky for the ones that don't strictly fall into one of those 2 things. I like seeing how they (soul reapers) react to encounters that don't necessarily fall in line with the way they think/act and question their system of honour/pride/battle/even nobility. Be it hollows(like in today's ep or the one that killed Ichigos mom), Ichigos group, even Soul reapers themselves (think Kenny or Mayuri Urahara etc.).

I think the way to understand the "Pride" speech by Ukitake is by remembering the Soul Society is still a medieval era society at best. These characters are old in a world that develops slowly, Rukia herself is over a century old and she's one of the youngest people there. Think back to the value system depicted in Shogun, and how important self-pride and honor would have been to people living in such a society. I also think if you lived in the soul society and knew that reincarnation was definitely a thing, you would view death differently. Its not too hard for me to believe that for the soul reapers there are a lot worse things than death.

I'm not sure if I'm alone in this feeling but would it be possible to increase the volume a bit I have my volume maxed out and it is fine I can hear everything its just lower then I would like but it helps to immerse myself in the anime if my ears are bleeding 😂 but in all seriousness it would be nice to have more control of the volume on my end if its too loud I could just lower it if needed.

The show takes so much influence from old samurai culture where they valued pride/ honour over life itself. Kaien asked to fight alone in the hope of saving his wife but then maybe didn’t want to be saved knowing she was dead. Would kind of be like Ukitake denying his dying wish if he stepped in to help. Just one way to look at it. Loving the reactions guys!

We actually saw that scene of Ukitake talking about fights and pride in a flashback way back in episode 9, during Ichigo vs the hollow that killed his mom at the graveyard, Rukia was gonna intervene but recalled this moment we just saw. Also you guys had the complete opposite reaction when you heard it the first time lol, but they are different circumstances I guess

Rukia has PTSD survivor's guilt. She feels guilty that she got to live while someone else, especially someone who she thinks is more deserving, died instead. Even if she wasn't the one who dealt the final blow she would've likely still had some level of PTSD from his dying after that course of events where Miyako and many others in her squad died as well. Now she's a lieutenant but back then she was just a low ranking squad member who fealt like she hadn't earned her place yet.

I think the pride call out is very interesting, but it makes a lot more sense when you look at the Soul Society through a feudal Japan / samurai lens. What feels frustrating from a modern (and honestly very Western) perspective is kind of baked into their worldview. The Gotei 13 operate on duty, hierarchy, and personal honor, where stepping into someone else’s fight can actually be seen as disrespectful rather than helpful. That 1:1 mentality isn’t about logic, it’s about identity and pride as warriors. So I get why it’s annoying to watch, but it’s less about them making bad choices/not able to help, and more about them being shaped by a system that values pride and order over practicality, which Bleach is lowkey critiquing too.

Its a valid crashout on Kaien’s part. My boy had his homies slaughtered, wife controlled, killing more of his friends/subordinates then she got ate out (not in the good way) and killed then the hollow talking mad shit. Who tf Ukitake is to not let him run his 1s lol. Plus Kaien was basically the captain anyway, Ukitake knew the hollow wasnt strong enough to kill him. It just happened that this particular hollow had the most OP abilities thats never been seen before. I actually liked that Ukitake didnt step in until the situation completely changed. The pride thing isnt just an old Japanese lens, its still relevant today.

The anime unfortunately butchered this Kaien flashback a bit. In the manga his wife came back dead. She wasn't possesed or controlled and she didn't kill anyone either. She was just flat out dead. So the Captain just standing there, twiddling his thumb and watching her slaughter his men did NOT happen in the manga. So with that in mind, Kaien and the Captain and Rukia had no idea that the hollow could posses a soul reaper. And the hollow himself certainly did NOT announce it either before doing it to Kaien (god I hate that the hollow announced that sht in the anime). He just did it. Everyone was caught completely by surprise by that abillity. Also in the manga after Kaiens Zanpaku-to vanishes, he himself said that he can still take the hollow out on his own with just his kido, and the captain must have assumed so too, eventhough he was still concerned. Literally the only reason that didn't happen is because noone expected that possesion abillity. About the honor/pride thing, soul reapers are warriors, that are loosely based on samurai (who commited seppuku if they lost their honor). So honor is very important to them. Ukitake just allowed Kaien to do what he wanted.

The soul society definitely feels stagnant because it's based on an old era of customs and culture (hence the honour and pride thing too). They have this clear-cut system, that as you guys said there is so much order, as it's based on class, but also it feels quite cold for a place that is meant to take care of souls. The way i see it imo, they simply value strictness and keeping things in place over emotion, hence why they're not considering the details in Rukia's special case and just executing her because she broke the law. It also links to when Ichigo questioned their methods about destroying mod souls, not even considering that the souls might want live. Doesn't make it right of course, but it means more efficiency in getting rid of hollows and passing on souls :)

Hitsugaya Shikai translates to Ice Ring. Yeah Rukia had that survivor guilt from the Kaien incident. They didn’t really say anything about Kaien’s appearance which was surprising.
