They didn’t want Eun-myeong going out to the sea because of how much trauma it holds for them. They already lost Ae-sun’s mother to the sea, and they lost their other son because of it too. So when they hear that he’s going deep sea fishing, they’re thinking of the possibility of never seeing him again. And deep sea fishing genuinely is terrifyingly dangerous too. People can be stuck out there for days in brutal weather, huge waves, injuries happen constantly, and if something goes wrong, help isn’t close by. Especially for people from Jeju, the sea is something that’s fed families but also taken countless away. So Gwan-sik turning the boat around was pure fear after a lifetime of loss.

Quick unrelated rant at the wall before I watch this reaction: PLEASE don’t listen to the people telling you to watch Moon Lovers 😭😭😭😭😭 I get that it’s beloved by international viewers, but istg they only like it bc they haven’t watched many high quality sageuks (historical KDramas) to compare it with. That show’s rife with baffling historical inaccuracies*, gaping plot holes, cheap costumes, a cast of overwhelmingly unlikable characters despite the stellar performances of Kang Haneul my goattt and Lee Junki, abysmally bad acting from certain actors (e.g., Baekhyun and Seohyun), and insaaanelyyyy bad writing I could literally write a PhD dissertation about. It’s so, so, SO bad that it gives me actual physical pain to see people listing it in their Top 5 historical KDrama lists alongside literal masterpieces like The Red Sleeve. IU is wonderful, yes, and she truly did the best she could with the shitty script she was given— but her presence in that show does nothing to negate just how mid it is (both as a fictionalized interpretation of history and also as a story in general). TL;DR — Not everything IU is in is gold. I’m sure you’ll do this already, but please give other shows and other actors a chance.

*Source: Am Korean and also a huge history nerd. Yes, I do know that it’s possible to create a compelling story about real events without 100% sticking to documented record. My argument is that Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo’s plot misrepresents said record beyond reasonable constraints— and that the story it chose to tell didn’t justify making those leaps in the first place. Even if you view it as a fantasy drama, it’s still bad.

I would suggest: Reply 1988, it's pure comfort. It's a mix of friendship, family, and nostalgia. It’ll make you laugh, cry, and feel like you’re right at home, one of my favourite K-Dramas of all time

Honestly, I sympathize with the younger brother more than resent him! He spoke the truth about the favoritism to his parents at the beginning of the episode. They’re reaping what they sowed by neglecting their second child. So in my opinion, it’s unfortunately really Ae-sun and Gwan-sik’s fault, despite how much I love these characters. My mum was the Eun-myeong of her family, except she was the oldest child, and her parents paid more attention to her younger brother, my uncle, because he had health issues since he was 5–6 years old. And it deeply affected her throughout her whole life, even now as a 50-year-old woman! So this episode really resonated with me because of my mum and the struggles I’ve heard about my whole life. Overall, another episode where I failed not to cry. This damn show really does it to me every freaking time… I’m sick and tired of it (in the best way)!

If you want an IU drama, I highly recommend: - Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo - My Mister - Hotel Del Luna Her newest drama, Perfect Crown, is very underwhelming. It is not because of the cast, but the story itself was a miss for me. It had potential, but in the end, it was so boring and generic.
