Sadly lisa lisa was too progressive at the time for shonen. Araki tried and tried to have Lisa Lisa be more at the forefront but his editor wouldnt let him. Theres a moment in the future episodes that really highlights this. So Araki wanted to but he was just stuck.

There is a theory that Lisa Lisa was meant to do more but Araki's editors thought it would be too progressive (cause she's a woman and it was the late 80's early 90's) and they wanted Jojo to be the focus and hero of the story so he wrote her the way you see her today. I can see this being very possible since it was always odd to me how she sorta disappeared to the back right after being introduced in a cool way. Lisa Lisa was just the victim here :/

Yeah I thought I heard Araki say he found it difficult to write female characters. That being said, it's not just Lisa Lisa. Jonathan and Joseph are the ones who almost exclusively do the fighting, there hasn't been much room for secondary characters.

The voice actress for Lisa Lisa, Atsuko Tanaka, actually passed away two years ago from an undisclosed illness. She was an incredibly talented voice actress who voiced over 300 characters, most known roles being Konan from Naruto, Motoko Kusanagi from Ghost in the Shell, and Caster from Fate. RIP

To be fair to Lisa Lisa, she hasn't really had the opportunity to do anything so far. With the Suzie Q stuff last episode, she was naked and in a towel, so unless absolutely necessary, she wouldn't want to act in that state with Joseph and Caesar there. Then this episode, her, Ceaser and Messina weren't in a position to do anything. Writing wise tho, as people are saying, it is unfortunately a product of it's time.

they do have a lot more control than people give them credit for. Everyone in Naruto was going to be furrys before the editor shut it down, for example. also the editor forced sasuke into the manga. that being said Araki has also admitted that he was bad at writing strong female characters until around the time he was getting married

While it was in reference to his previous work before (so Geks this is not him directly talking about Lisa Lisa) Jojo's, he definitely meant in general, here's a quote from Araki back in 2012 'Araki: Around that time, the film Aliens had just come out. I tried my hand at creating a strong woman like Sigourney Weaver's Ripley, but I'm a man nevertheless, and I had the impression that a girl being punched was too cruel an image for me to draw.' also super fucking ironic considering the manga shows Danny being burned alive in part 1

They do, Carter. Think about editors as the mangaka supervisor, and most of the time the editor will push the story torwards what is going to sell more rather than what is going to benefit the plot, specially for Shonen Jump. Other less "famous" magazines may have a different approach. JoJo's changed magazine at some point in the story, moving from a shonen to a seinen and you can definitely see a big difference.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the idea that "Lisa Lisa didn't get more screentime because the editor pushed back against it" is just hearsay. Not saying it's impossible but there's just no direct confirmation from either Araki or his first editor for that matter. In the case of Lisa Lisa I think the explanation is honestly much simpler if we take the time to look at what Araki did with the other side characters in P1. Jonathan's mentor Baron Zeppeli won 0 fights by himself. Dire got no-diffed and Straizo and Tonpetty were practically background characters. Up till this point it's mostly been the mc that got to fight. Mangas get judged on a week to week basis, and the amount of drop in viewership you can tolerate is small. Mangakas are constantly competing with each other for attention, much like a content creators on social media. But instead of social media here it's the shonen jump or other magazines. It's pure conjecture but up till this point I think Araki simply chose to heavily prioritize his main characters because he probably felt that dedicating multiple weeks to a side character fighting would be too big of a risk engagement wise. This being said, yes editors often do have some degree of control over what the mangaka does, sometimes for the worse but often for the better imo. They can give ideas but can also force changes if it's necessary. The reputation and experience of the mangaka definitely affects how much editors will interfere. Lots of mangas wouldn't have been nearly as good without the guidance of an editor. Something to keep in mind is that mangakas draw well but they learn to write stories on the fly and tend to go a little crazy with some of their ideas. And that's something the editor helps a lot with by containing their creativity, since they have the experience of knowing what works and what doesn't. If you're ever curious, there's a good manga / anime dedicated to that subject called "Bakuman", from the authors of "Death Note" It's pretty good, tells the story of a guy whose dream is to become a mangaka. Of course it's romanticized but it gives us a decent idea of the kind of relation editors and mangakas have and the inside workings of that industry.

I agree with the comments saying Lisa Lisa's lack of fighting is a product of the time however I do think it's also like someone else said they pushed for Jojo to do most of the fighting. The show is named after him, everyone else is a background character. They might have a chapter or moment in a fight that pushes them to the forefront but overall it has to tie into the MC. Especially since this is early in the series to get people hooked you have to focus on the MC most of the time. It's not Jojo & Friends Bizarre adventure. that's just until the MC is solidified and beloved then it can be them and all their friends.

Hey, a lot of people wanted them to play it safe an wait, and unfortunately, by making a big deal of it, it makes the spoilers easier to spot. Every opening is watchable immediately if people just say there aren't any spoilers. The second people say there are spoilers they will realize it in the visuals.

Lisa Lisa doesn’t strike me as a character who would care about being naked if her enemy is right in front of her, her stone on its way to being lost, and her maid being tortured. And if she is, she kinda sucks. Plus, her reaction to having a bad feeling about JoJo was to take a bath in the middle of the day lol.

Eh, even if she was ok with being naked, she probably doesn't want to be fully naked in front of her son and her apprentice. Especially if they are just as capable of handling the situation. I think it's pretty safe to say that she would've handled it had Jojo and Caesar not been there. That's also besides the fact she offered to deal with it if they weren't up to it. As for taking a bath, it was right after the crack of dawn and her worry was for whether Joseph would pass the test, since she didn't know Esidisi was there. Her writing is very much so just ok tho. As with most side characters in Parts 1 and 2, they don't get handled super well
