I like how unbothered Michonne is lol yes she basically spoke to Merle's conscience and him letting her go shows that her words affected him. I think he knows it's a suicide mission but he's done too much to go back which is sad. Rip Merle I believe given time he could've changed and would've been a good asset to the team. Heart broke for Daryl being the one to find him and end it :(

I think Merle never really felt accepted and the Governor taking him in and giving him a "purpose" was the closest to conditional love he ever felt. People always asking him why he is the way he is, but the Governor saw who he was and used him. It is messed up. Michonne just helped him see that the Governor was not accepting of him but made him do the terrible things nobody can do.

Well this episode was a huuuge rollercoaster for me. I felt sick, then relieved, then excited, scared and then sad but a little relieved. If only Merle could've gotten Martinez at least😭😭 that would've been a real loss for the Governor.. But still, good job, I guess he delayed the Governor's plan.

Ugh I unfortunately agree.. Some villains I like, but this one's really gross.. but really good villain indeed, he brings a lot to the show. I can only hope his fall will be glorious and satisfying to an extent.

Merle was part of a good group at the beginning of the series, yet he kept threatening the very people who were helping to keep him alive. When Rick asked him why do you do the things that you do, he didn't have an answer. I think Merle realized that he's never going to change.

I think after his experience at woodbury he'd prefer Rick over the governor. He said it himself how sick the governor is. His position at woodbury was basically a hitman and lapdog. Plus Daryl is there who he loves and is loyal to so I think he would've tried to coexist for his sake. I took it that as he realized he's hurt too much people in the group and that they'll never accept him so why try.

and to Michonne's point, Merle isn't an actual bad or evil guy. He's a good guy who's done evil and immoral things. But killing someone for a good person, like Merle, is a moral choice, and it weighs on his conscious, hence why he kept count of how many people he's killed. But for someone like the Governor, it's a logistical choice, how can I get to my goal and is it effective? It isn't a moral choice, and if you were to ask the Governor how many people's he's killed, he probably wouldn't be able to tell you, cause it's just a means to an end. You can tell the difference between the two based on how the offer empathy or concern. When Merle sees the scars Daryl has, you can see in his face how much it affected him, and how he can imagine the pain Daryl went through, vs when the Governor offers empathy/sympathy, it often feels empty, like an act. He doesn't truly feel it, it's more so a checklist he knows he needs to hit. He's performing for people, to gain their trust. Heck, even Tyrese, when he hears about horrible things, you can see it in his eyes, him imagining how painful something must feel. Now obviously, kudos to the actors for being able to portray these things

@jacob merle is definitely NOT a good guy still - he was horribly racist and sexist and more, and that cant be forgetten just cuz he tried to do something good at the end. i mean the man kept a whole nazi symbol on his bike too. the difference is that merle was more bark than bite and he was a bad guy, but not an entirely evil one despite of all his talk. complicated character and had more goodness in him than ppl r initially led to believe (one of those how much is nature vs nuture questions perhaps), but that also cant and shouldnt undo the harm he did to others around him by sharing in such awful ideas/actions. while merle was more verbally abusive on his own, he still made himself party to those with a whole lot more bite, whether it was hate groups irl or the governor in the apocalypse.

Yea I heard it here and there, but since all the shows drop at different time, and not everybody watches all of them, it probably hurt the first week but by now I still see a big difference in likes, so it's just fair. Too bad though, I really enjoy TWD so so much!

expanding on that i always got the feeling that merle is the way he is bcuz he was so bullied at home that he had to hate and look down on everyone else to feel like the 'big man' or whatever, seeming to find community with hate groups so he could be the perpetrator and not the victim after (most likely partly passed down by their family in gen too tho, as it often goes :/ considering daryls less overall hateful but still ignorant way of speaking at the start) - its unfortunate cuz it does seem that he had more depth than he ever really got to realize, but the man seemed fairly resistant to it himself, so yk...glad michonne and him got that talk and he went out at least trying to do something better than how hed treated others in life. cant undo all the things he said or did, but definitely on the better side of endings for such a character - just sad for daryl too

Merle and Darryl's story is just all around tragedy. Merle chose to leave behind his baby brother in the hands of their abusive parent/parents because Merle couldn't take it anymore, which is understandable and perhaps the only way he could get away at that moment, but from the previous dialogues and contexts from them Merle feels deeply guilty about it. This abandonment likely shaped his "public enemy" facade, because he couldn't forgive himself for leaving someone he loved behind, he reduced himself to a menacing figure, unworthy of anyone's forgiveness. Throughout the show he has been saying and doing things that are pretty deplorable, almost as if he's deliberately annoying and pissing off everyone so no one can like him, because he can't fathom that someone can have sympathy for him. We heard multiple times from both the brothers that they just want to be together, and I think this post apocalyptic world could have been a whole new world for them, just the brothers together with no one whipping the crap out of them, but all the way from season 1 til the end that wish could never be realized. They never could have their moment of reconciliation, and Merle's last choice of going in by himself was probably what he felt like the best he could do to express his regrets and try to undo the damage done to his little brother caused by his absence. Separate from Merle's story, Darry may have developed different sentiment towards Merle growing up, and the scene where Darryl finishes off his brother is so powerful because it must be so liberating to finally put his past behind, whether he loved his brother or not. RIP Merle you were one wild cat 🍷🍷

Michonne, with her sword, reminds me of the Bride in the Kill Bill movies. But Michonne wants to kill Phil (the Governor). I could have sworn that fight scene with Merle and the Governor lasted longer, or the dialogue between them lasted longer. This season isn't ending the way that I remembered. But I'm enjoying the rewatch.

I mean yea, since they only watch the big 3 at the same time which is a pretty bad decision if you ask me when there are tons of great shows that are much shorter and unique. Literally only watching shonen. No variety then one kdrama and this show.

Another thing that hit Merle was when Michonne said TRULY evil people feel nothing for doing wrong. Yet Merle was remorseful, even remembering how many people he had to kill. When Michonne was saying we could go back like to the prison, Merle was saying no he can't. In a way I think he also meant he couldn't forgive himself for all the messed up things he had to do. And it came full circle in the car when Michonne pointed out all the killing he had to do was for the Governor. He called Daryl a lapdog yet was the same for the Governor and became what he hated. He was trying to save Daryl but also felt his only place was to get back at the man who messed him up.

imo, merle is a vary missunderstood character. on the core, all he was , was a racist junkie. the backstory he had with darryl made it clear they were abused as kids first it was merle, then it became darryl when merle fled the house. thinking he was just the hated child/black sheep. he only became bad` when he joined woodburry. when he was in the camp , he was a racist asshole, due to their upbringing, same as darryl. but he wasnt inherently a bad person. he was just worse then darryl.

Yeah I did feel bad for Merle and I really enjoyed his arc. It doesn’t excuse any of the bad things he did but I don’t feel bad about liking his character in the end. He genuinely loved his brother and he felt a lot of guilt about leaving him in the hands of their father. Merle had a ton of flaws but he went out and did his best to protect his brother in the end. Spoiler: Judging by how they were talking about Merle, I’m curious to see how they come to terms with a certain character in season 6 and how that character will develop as time goes on.

Yes and Daryl knew Merle was sorry. He even told Michonne he does not know why he does these terrible things... Ah it's sad!! At the end he broke the cycle and Daryl has been able to witness that.
