Corazon and Doflamingo to me serve as the ultimate representation of the nature vs nurture argument. Both brothers were born at the height of luxury as Celestial Dragons, suddenly experienced a violent fall from grace after their father gave up their status and suffered poverty, torture and hatred from the public. By age 10 Doflamingo had seen both heaven and hell and decided right then and there to never want to feel out of control again, swearing to make everyone pay for what has been done to him. (This is again symbolized by his devil fruit being puppet strings) Despite having faced the exact same horrific childhood events, Corazon remained compassionate, joined the marines to protect citizens (the same citizens his brother holds resentment for), then returned to his brother to try to keep him and his destructive nature in check and also brought Law under his wing, because behind his cruel facade, he saw what he truly was; a scared little boy hiding an immense amount of pain. Even though Corazon believed Doflamingo always had an evil nature, his own life proves the power of positive nurture. Raised with the gentle values of their father and later guided and protected by Sengoku in the Marines, Rosinante channeled all his pain into empathy and kindness. Corazon to me represents that your trauma does not have to define you. You do not have to go down the path of darkness, you always have a choice. And he chose kindness ❤️

SBS corner Vol 76 I thought this was really cool. So for context, there is a way to submit fan art and have a chance to be selected by Oda and some of his editors, called “Usopp Gallery Pirates”. The fan art was then featured at the end of chapters. A 16 year old boy named Kohei Horikoshi submitted a piece of art for the “Usopp Gallery Pirates” back in volume 23. This was in 2002, during the climax of Alabasta. 12 years later, just a month before the release of Volume 76 in 2014 (the current volume the Geks are at rn), that same kid ended up creating the series “My Hero Academia”! Its first volume was released in the same magazine, Weekly Shonen Jump, as One Piece! Super cool full circle moment.

So…the Homing scene with him openly admitting they came from Mariejois is actually an added scene from the anime…that never happened in the manga. Only Doffy sold them out BUUUUT they did say “let’s lead a quiet life” while having a huge ass mansion. So Homing probably was a bit oblivious, just not to the extent that the anime portrays it. I think the Geks made a great point last time. It’s possible the man had his fun then left, but it’s also possible that he was on the nicer end of the celestials. I at least think Homing and his wife were kindhearted since they didn’t seem to hold a grudge against the citizens hunting them as if they may have understood why it was happening

The “Water” in Law’s name does feel random lol, but it’s just another Oda special of referencing real history in everything. His whole name is a reference to two conflicts: Trafalgar, as in the Battle of Trafalgar off the southwest coast of Spain, and Water Law, referring to the Battle of Waterloo, where Napoleon was defeated.

perspective plays such an important role in so many stories, and I've absolutely loved getting to see so many of them in One Piece, especially with villains and their origins. I've heard many people early on in the story say "all Celestial Dragons are evil/terrible/irredeemable," etc etc, but getting to this moment proves otherwise. blanket 'othering' is just wrong and can lead to awful atrocities, no matter who they're committed by. sososo happy you're watching OP & that I get to hear the progression of thoughts & opinions as you go! Yes Carter! Corazon is a top 5 OP character for me. He had every reason to hate the world because of the pain he suffered but because of that same pain he chose to work to ensure that no one else has to suffer, a complete antithesis to Doflamingo.

Something I thought about on rewatch. Law and doffy both are put in extremely unfair scenarios and have an obsession with fairness because of it. Doffy wants to get even with humans by killing all of them. Bad thing happens to me I do bad thing to you. With Law he stabs corazon then keeps his secret. He does bad things makes up for it with a good one. Just another parallel between the two and how although they can relate to each other they are completely different because law has a kind heart. This my personal favorite backstory and why laws one of my faves besides him just having the coolest fruit ever

I think what's always fascinating for me is how two people can go through the same exact childhood, and for that childhood to impact them so differently. Because you could tell Doffy cared for his mother and then cared for his brother. But he taps into his evil nature so easily and so swiftly that you doubt whether he has any humanity. However I think it's worth pointing out that he was older than Corazon, was used to a different lifestyle which he actually appreciated. So everything that went wrong would naturally be his father's faults. Corazon could never view it that way because he's so good and kind inside. I don't know how I genuinely love both characters despite them being so completely different.

When it comes to names and Oda, its never random, although like you said it does feel/seem random. But its almost never just surface level, like a "let me just slap a name on this guy" type of thing. There a VERY high chance that the name has some sort of deeper or hidden meaning behind them. He either references some historical figure/place/event, classic literature, or japanese folklore. The guy also just really loves word play and honestly he is one of the best at it too and these are some of his best qualities as a writer. Araki has similar qualities too, he's always referencing bands, musicians, artists, and films.

I feel like the phrase "The eyes are the window to the soul" applies to both Doffy and Corazon. When they were strung up by the people, their eyes were covered because they were regarded as monsters even though Homing wanted to be human. It seems like Corazon eyes are hidden too until he "shows" his face to Law showing his humanity, and obviously Doffy eyes are never shown because like Cora said he has no humanity or rather no soul. Corazon crying over Law always gets me though his compassion is unmatched I love their relationship sm 😭

I was reading this on reddit but Law describes his true name Water as his “imina” or “taboo name”. In ancient China and Korea, the royalty have an “imina” that was supposed to be their "true name", but it was considered too holy to be spoken by the public, so they were given a fake name that the public could call them. So basically, Law is saying that his name is "Water" but the name the public can call him is "Law". The connotations with ancient royalty are very interesting though :)

Just a little Japanese language detail! 😊 When Law starts calling Corazon “Corasan” (コラさん), the “-san” (さん) is a Japanese honorific. It’s usually used as a polite way to address someone, but it can also express familiarity and affection. So when Law calls him “Corasan,” it feels more personal and affectionate, rather than simply formal. It’s a small detail, but I love how it shows how close Law feels to Corazon.

Seeing this backstory again hit very hard, there was whiplash coming out of it to the fight at the end. I really felt for child Doffy. In my memory, he seemed like a bad kid, but watching this again, he clearly cared about his mom, his brother, and even gave his dad the benefit of the doubt until the very end in the moment with the fire. And him lashing out against the people torturing him was understandable. He clearly has humanity given his PTSD reaction to that event, and how much he cares about his family. I like how Law was clearly mirroring him, because we know Law was/is not bad despite being similar as a child wanting to kill everyone in the world. Law had someone lead him onto a better path and believe in him... Doffy as an adult is not redeemable but as a kid, it seemed like there was good in him.

By the way, when I was a kid and watching the way Doffy spoke as a child, I thought he was evil for talking like a typical celestial dragon, and that there was something innately wrong with him compared to his family. But as an adult working with a vulnerable child population, I see it completely differently. He is literally too young to understand and speaking plainly like a very typical child. Children often say the wrong things, especially if they have bad influences around them, but they are also easily taught and its our job as adults to teach them and believe in them
