You did Brig dirty in the last two lol All ass or all thighs hahahahaha

Light Yagami is a sociopath with a God complex. It's natural to loathe him from the start lmao

Fun fact: The Japanese language doesn’t have the letter L therefore they substitute it with the letter R. That’s why in Japanese Light is pronounced “Raito”. That makes the name “L” symbolic since the letter L doesn’t exist meaning the character doesn’t exist (essentially anonymous) making it difficult/impossible for Light to find who L is 🤯 Anyways I am so excited for you guys to witness the greatest cat and mouse chase in anime history 😊

Christa

Idk what you talking about Carter, Brig still looks beautiful 🙃

L confronts Kira was the moment i felt in love with this anime. Ryuk casually enjoying all the beef is me.

I’ll be honest the confrontation in dub is amazing and that last shot of them two saying they will find each other is done so much better in dub while here it sounds like they are lightly chatting to each other rather then shouting their intentions. The aggressive way it’s done in the dub is so much more epic IMO

Team L !!!! I don’t like Light 😮‍💨

I agree I was hoping they’d watch the 2nd episode in dub so they could experience the confrontation in English. You’re right it’s so epic!

As mentioned in this episode, “Kira” (キラ) is the Japanese pronunciation for the English word, “Killer”. But there’s also another layer to name. Coincidentally, “kirakira” (キラキラ) means shining, glistening or sparkling; which kind of alludes to “Light”. Light’s full name, Yagami Light (夜神月), is also interesting. His surname, Yagami (夜神), translates to “night god” and his first name, 月, means “moon”. 月 does not actually mean “light” and would normally be read as “tsuki”. If anything, you would expect his name to be ライト(“raito”) which is Katakana for “light” (because his name is derived from an English word). However, the mangaka decided to use the Kanji for “moon” as his name. I think the reason being, to continue the theme and reinforce the idea that Light views himself as a God that lights up the dark world.

I had no idea. Thanks for info! That makes me wonder if the pun was intentional. To add on to this comment: There is a trend in Japan where parents give their children “yoonique” names by using Kanji 1) as the phonetic symbol, regardless of its meaning or 2) for the meaning, regardless of how it’s actually read. For scenario 1: Imagine Eren was a Japanese student, and his parents gave him a kirakira name. Instead of using エレン (read as “Eren”), they use 永恋, which could be read as “Eren” (永 = “ei”, 恋 = “ren”). However, the meaning of the Kanji has nothing to do with the meaning of the actual name. (Collectively, 永恋 translates to “eternal love”. Kind of fitting for his character when I think of the lyrics of Akuma no Ko 😢) Scenario 2 is Light’s name. His parents most likely decided on the name “Light” first, and then chose the Kanji with a similar meaning. Unexpectedly, they decided to use the Kanji for “moon” (月, read as “tsuki”) instead of the Kanji for “light” (光, read as “hikari”). At first glance, you would not know his name is meant to be pronounced as “Raito”.

Wow, you know very well.Light Yagami's name is usually not pronounced correctly by Japanese unless they know how to read it beforehand. Light Yagami is a murderer, so the writer deliberately gave him an unlikely name to prevent children with the same name from being bullied at school.

That’s a perspective I never considered. Thanks for the insight! Funny you mention the likelihood of someone in real life having the same name as him; ironically, there is a Digimon character with the name, Yagami Hikari.

My brain hurts from reading all that lol. But at the same time, this is so interesting!

Sorry, tried to be concise and not brain dump everything. 😅 Haha, my auto-correct really wanted to change it to “ratio”. Imagine Light’s name being Ratio instead: Death Note would be predicting the “L + ratio” meme.

Knomadic

I love how up until Lind L Taylor you can see Light has been neatly writing the names in small columns where he can fit rows on one page. Then he just snaps and writes Lind L Taylor crooked and at like a 10X of the size he normally rights. Just a cool way of showing how he completely changes in that moment through the text itself

Majoz

Haha, love your reactions! But even tho its a shounen does not mean its happy go all the time, one piece for example is so fucking dark, its crazy how they can make it so dark and still have positive vibes to it
