Well guys we did it, we tried the dub for an episode and it was very interesting! I apologize for the late upload. Things have been super hectic the last few days but the last 2 will be uploaded tomorrow!

The thing with Anime like Death Note and Code Geass is that most of us watched it a long time ago, like almost a decade ago. Back then Anime wasn't as accessible as it is today, and a large percentage of watchers could only find it in English, not Japanese with subs. This is why so many people recommend the dub; it's what we grew up with.

Carter the show said something like "didn't Ryuk sneak a second death note behind the old man's back." If shinigamis are kind of like demons then them referring to the 'old man' would be some sort of 'devil' character you know.

In another video, you guys mentioned that you had a lot of Japanese viewers too. Maybe watching the sub would be easier for them to follow along. The reason why the Dub's voice lines aren't perfectly 1 to 1 translated is due to the animation. The animation is perfectly synced only for Japanese character lines (I'm pretty sure), when the characters talks, the animation shows that. If you tried to perfectly translate it to English, you'll most likely see characters continuing to talk when the animation has already stopped, leaving it janky and jaring, almost like youtube video which has 1 sec behind audio issues. So because of that, the dubbing has to 1) try to convey the overall message as closely to the original meaning, and 2) making sure the English words is within the character talking or aka the animation!

I wonder how they’ll feel about the first 10 episodes. It’s either a hit or miss because of the pacing and comedy. I can see them being hella confused 😅 and maybe put-off by some of the jokes. But those episodes are important for setting up the latter half of the show.

I have to disagree, new anime watchers like me who haven't been around for a long time still chose the dub over the sub for death note because we were told it was really good and it was. If they started out watching it in the dub then it would've sounded more natural to them. But they are too used to the sub now, oh well.

Just some clarification: the 'old man' the shinigami were talking about is not an actual man that Ryuk gave a deathnote to. They were refering to their 'boss' or like the shinigami god. If i remember correctly they were talking about how Ryuk had 2 death notes without their boss (the old man) knowing about it. Or Ryuk just didn't give it back, not 100% sure. Don't worry this is in no way, shape or form a spoiler.

it's common for first time anime watchers to watch dub regardless of generation, when I first started I watched only dub for a few months (including death note) then eventually started moving into sub because of some anime like vinland saga which didn't have a dub. Nowadays I never watch dub unless it's kaguya sama lol

Man, the dub version is great. In my opinion, the best dub of any anime. I was actually able to get through it even after watching it in Sub. Light's voice actor is AMAZING.

again, it should not even be a question to watch anime shows in dub. Just watch it on the original audio. Would you try the japenese or french or whatever dub for a show like Incredible? Or spider man the animated movie? Would you watch a show like dark in any other language than german? Just watch stuff on their original audio, no matter how the internet says the dub is great, it will never be as good. Most of the time it can kill the atmosphere of a show, it can change character vocal traits and whatnot. Most people recommending it are just nostalgic because they watched it for the first time in the dub years and years ago. There is no reason to watch in dub.

subtitles are different than the dub because they're a direct translation whereas the words spoken are chosen to match the mouth movements for the most part

Imo if a show is being watched by a native English speaker and the dub and sub are both at least fine(some smaller budget shows are truly unbearable, but basically any popular show fits) then the real answer to sub v dub is which one you watch first. This is a take from someone who was a dub watcher and then converted to sub. Every show I have seen first in dub I think the dub sounds better and same for sub and everyone I talk to this opinion holds up. I'm 90% sure it is because your brain hears the first voice and connects it with the character. Ofc this may not be true for individual characters, like even though I saw first 3 seasons of AoT in dub, I still don't like armin's voice in it as much, but its accurate for shows overall. Just my opinion

they explicity said that they dont necessarily mind the actual voicing and thought it was much better than for AOT. i dont see why youre blowing up like a bunch of C4. moreover, its obvious you arent familiar with how the human brain works. we as humans get used to things very quick and change our minds very little unless theres a SIGNIFICANT reason to change it. when i started watching DN, i started with the sub, and i enjoyed it and found it natural. when i switched to the dub, i found it extremely jarring and couldnt really hack it, my brain was picking up on too many little things that it normally wouldnt pick up on bc it was far too familiar with the sub. however, when i watched fairytail alllllll those years ago, i watched it in dub and it felt very natural. when i went back to it recently, i realised that the dub is actually kinda cringe, but i was still far more comfortable with the dub than the sub at that point, its just how our brains works, we get familiar with smthn and we move on. so people are gonna stick with what theyre first familiar with, unless theres a RADICAL difference that makes one supremely better than the other, but particularly with voice acting, thats very unlikely to happen bc the brain just attaches itself quickly and becomes resistant to change. so please, honestly, just relax and knock it off. we cant change how our brain works that easily🤦🏾‍♂️

You must be new to the anime community. English dub hating has been going on for centuries! It’s not just happening in some “patreon comment section.” It’s happening all across the world on many different social media platforms. Real life people voiced these characters and when they read such toxic negativity surrounding it, that can really fuck with someone’s brain. Like I said, I’ve seen actual people take their own life due to negative and hurtful comments. Some people just don’t realize that their words can affect others.

You are performing for an audience and naturally some will like you, and some won’t. You can’t expect everyone to like your work. While I agree it also falls on fans to be respectful with their critiques and keep it to the WORK and not the person behind it, I’m not sure what comment in particular angered you this much here. Centuries is a bit of a stretch. First anime ever dubbed was exactly 60 years ago...not gonna lie i expected more recent than that. Some ppl like me think that most anime have more emotional range with sub. Some ppl are like my girl and think dub is fine and don't want to miss something while reading subtitles. To each there own. I don't think the English VA's are going to be hurt by this but just because someone is being toxic doesn't mean you aren't toxic by lashing out. Yeah, the thing about the part of the show that Brig is talking about is that there is a clear break in the writing. And the second part is not bad it just feels so bad when compared to the first part I would the first part a 9.8/10 and the second part like a 6.8/10. It's not it's just meh... It's a GoT season 8 vibe. That being said when you finally get to the end I was very satisfied... It was just the weird section that's not as good.😔 And Light is very much a Dexter like he is a full-blown serial killer but he's only killing criminals so it's kinda okay.....🙈🤔 Also idk why people are mad that they y'all are still saying Anime Haters like even if Cannon and Cater become full weebs (which I highly doubt) that is like their whole brand! I actually think most people are kinda overdramatic about the ending part of Death Note being "worse". There's plenty happening in the story to enjoy and when I came back to the show and finished it I was glad I did. Edit -- Also if yall want to watch the Dub you just need to find a good version where the subtitles actually match the words and you won't have an issue of missing things

I usually prefer sub almost always, but this dub is truly exceptional. Light’s VA is bone-chilling from what I remember and I just love L’s VA and his eccentric portrayal. Of course, I might be a tad biased because I originally watched the whole series dubbed since the friend that watched it with me would only watch it in English. Then again, I also LOVE the AOT dub if not prefer it now circa season four, so some may find my opinion controversial, lol. At the very least, you guys gave it a chance and that’s awesome.

Not me. Growing up, I watched everything subbed. I had to torrent fan subs off Anime Suki if anyone even remembers that site, lol. Even still, I watched Death Note dubbed at the advice of a friend and no regrets experiencing it the first time that way. It’s amazing.

Nah the “second part” of DN is nowhere near as bad as GoT s8 lol. S8 was so bad it literally killed the goodwill GoT cultivated over a decade. No one discussed its merits after lol, people now just remember the stain that was s8 It’s more like s5-6 GoT. Interesting but clearly not as peak as 1-4. Though the manga is better since the anime rushed through some parts.

The largest issue that va's for dubbing face is that they are given a script and told to make it match as well as they can with the animation RIGHT NOW!!! and the dubbing just doesn't feel right because of that. There are some AMAZING anime where they did it right but most of the time i feel like the english show companies don't care to do it right and it just doesn't hit as well as the original va's that were ivolved from the start. Dub voice actors i think try their best but they are brought into all of it blind and i think they do very well without context original VA's have

There's no way the second part of death note is anywhere near as bad as s8 of GoT. S8 was god awful the way it betrays everything it'd been building to. I'd still give DN's second part an 8-8.5/10

I started anime as a kid with dub and gradually moved to sub when the animes that I was watching didn't catch up to the sub. I found the dub to be simple than if I were to start with a sub (maybe I wasn't knowledgeable back then haha). Tbh, just to name a few, animes like Naruto, Bleach, Yu-gi-oh, Beyblade, Blue Dragon, DN, Pokemon (who can forget lol), etc were great in dub. Dub took over my earlier years and I enjoyed every moment of it. I had to shift to sub to continue watching a few of them and many others. Of course, I started to gradually like sub as well. That's my story ~End

live action will always have to be the original audio no matter what, but for anime, it depends since these are animated characters so the dub and sub VAs can embody that character in their respective version. In my case, I started with dub at a young age then moved to sub b/c dub wasn't catching up with the sub. There are some great dubs out there too!
