That Anemic Guy

Lil nerd comment but when Thorkell asks Thors where he is going and he says "Somewhere but not here" that's the title of the first episode

That Anemic Guy

And I heard someone else say that the reason Thorkells got that weak spot on his jaw is because of when Thors knocked him out he punched him there

Idk who told you it's pronounced asheladd, but that's wrong. The closest you can get to the Nordic pronunciation is how you've been saying it until now. Aske does mean ashes in Norwegian and Askeladd is a very famous name here but the japanese pronunciation is off. Not that it's a big deal but thought I should mention it 🐒

The way yall are experiencing Canute is perfect, don't worry about your expectations. And I don't like "just wait" comments bc they can be spoilery but I would just say his philosophy will come more into focus the rest of the season, yeah let's say that, not what that philosophy is necessarily but... trust the process

Stunflower

yo please watch haikyuu eventually! i think u guys would enjoy a sports anime like it

Yeah Asheladd is just the way the Japanese pronounce it. I mean the Japanese pronounce Reiner as Lainah so I think we can just decide for ourselves lol

Matthew Valentine

excited for yall to get to season 2, canutes development is unreal from these last few eps on

CHIEF

Also developing a weak chin is a VERY real problem for a lot of UFC fighters and boxers especially, you can hear Rogan talk about certain guys being tanks until they get knocked out once and after that, if they get hit on the chin once, they're down

Please note that this is Old Norse and not Norwegian. In Old Norse if “Sk” is preceded by e it sounds as “Sh” so this is certainly not an error in the Japanese pronunciation, they did some research on it.

The Reiner assertion is incorrect. The Japanese pronounce Rs as L bc Japanese has a liquid phoneme in which both l & r fall. Pronunciation of words accounts for sounds surrounding the phonemes too, in Reiner's case, a low vowel such as e falls more towards the L. This is also not comparable with Vinland as it is trying to be as faultful as possible to the historic and language context of the period, while AOT is affected by just the current Japanese pronunciation of words.

Askeladd is a Norwegian name made by two Norwegians Asbjørnsen and Moe in the 1800s. It is a Norwegian name, not norse, and should probably be pronounced as such. Asheladd could be correct if you have a certain dialect from western Norway, but most people agree it should be pronounced with the hard k. The characters here are obviously norse, and sk being preceded by the e might sometimes be pronounced as Sh, but for this name it makes 0 sense. Although I personally can't find any source that specifically says that Sk before an e is always pronounced Sh. I only found this about ecclesiastical latin, so your source would be appreciated

That part about names, Japan doesn't have sounds like the th sound afaik so they say tor instead of thor basically but I mean technically it is Thor like we say the god of thunder and in the dub it is also pronounced thor not tor

It doesn’t matter if its a popular name in norway now, the characters are Norse and speak Old Norse the pronunciation should be in Old Norse taking into account that is what the series is aiming for source is SCANDIA: Journal of Medieval Norse Studies. The name Askleadden and its variations have different pronunciation and are written differently, there’s nothing mentioned on the series that ties him to that character so idk why it wouldn’t make sense for the name to be pronounced w sh.

There is also An Elementary Grammar of the Old Norse by Bayldon, that specifically says sk is pronounced sh before e and i

Mia Malvik
>>109163564

Yea I read that. It says it can be pronounced as sh, not that it always is. This name didn't exist back then so there's no way to know what's 100% right, but the general consensus is that the sk in this case sounds the best. The different pronunciations and spellings of the name are very familiar to me considering I live here, but again the standard way of saying it for nordic people is with the Sk so I don't understand the point of arguing against it when there's no concrete proof that it's 100% wrong

Mia Malvik
>>109163564

Again, both pronunciations are somewhat right. But Askeladd with the sk makes the most sense

it's toorzu in japanese, written tooruzu. So yeah non-japanese names change a lot when translated

Pressure

all i gotta say is carter called it the rest of this season is insane

Riya

Mckay and Carter seem like polar opposites when it comes to gore. Mckay looks like the type to be like YES! YES! with eyes wide open while Carter with his hands covering his face. What a great friendship lol

Ultimate

Well it’s pretty normal for people not to know but a strike to the jaw causes vibrations in the brain and makes anyone collapse.

Toff

lets go

You started this comment saying that whoever said it was pronounced as sh is wrong, that was me. I never said that pronouncing is sk is wrong I said in Old Norse is sh and that for the series sh makes more sense. I’m not arguing I’m stating my well informed opinion, this is what debating looks like and I’m in love w etymology, I indulge a lot. I agree w theres no way to know 100% whats right, since the language suffered various modifications due to the Vikings rading so many places language and culture from these places clashed amongst eachother, specially for him being half Dane & half Welsh. I however go with the way the writer of the series and its original language pronounce it, bc even if theres a bit of Japanese phonetic in their names they do try to stick to the historical background A LOT. Nordic people doesn’t equal Norse people, there are like 4 mayor language that exits now a days deriving from Old Norse.

I said it was wrong because the pronunciation of the name is indeed with sk unless you have a unique accent. If you have that accent, the rest of the name also sounds very different because the L and dd changes too. There's nowhere confirmed that it was only pronounced as sh in norse either, and that's my entire point. There's speculation that sh is also a correct way of saying it, but it's not confirmed that it's the only way they said that in norse. I have read your sources. I guess I just don't understand the need to correct the boys way of pronouncing it when it is indeed correct, even if there's another way of saying it.🤷‍♀️no need to continue this further tho

I was having a very nice conversation with Cannon in vc and it came up,he said he was roasted as a joke, the same tone I used when I told him to say Asheladd, lets not assume things on that regard either. Your opinion is that is is correct, my opinion is that it is sh in Old Norse, everyone is welcome to have their opinions ab it, even the boys. They are welcome to say it however they prefer. Good day.

A

such a great episode!!
