Btw guys the off screen reunion happened the same way in the manga too and the author explained that it wasn't a good timing because of the shit happening to Arnheid. But I bet we'll get more of a "reunion" sooner or later. These episodes was so hard to watch and like you said, even if you don't feel an emotional pull to Gardar it still felt so sad and the message about what war does to you and the people around you was so amazingly done. Peak show

Abigail Jerry

Top 5 1) Gon (HxH) 2) Hinata (Haikyuu) 3)Thorfinn & Askaladd (VS) 4) Levi (AOT) 5) Guts (Bersek)

Only sad thing is that I think mah boy Brig didn’t appreciate Gardar’s story as much as it could have been. I’m not hating on him (as I’ve been rocking with y’all since your first AOT vid). I can just tell at this point when he’s feeling a character or not and he wasn’t feelin Gardar (at least not his death). But fire reaction as always boys 💥 who knew a woman we just met this season would be having such a huge place in this Vinland saga story 😮‍💨

The names beginning with Th were written with the Icelandic letter þ which sounds like a mix between the American th and the hard T. Again, I prefer Cannon's pronunciation because that's how everyone in the Scandinavian countries say it nowadays 🦦

Top 5: Kakashi (naruto) Killua (HxH) Spook/Lestibournes (Mistborn) Geto (JJK) Hild (Vinland)

the reunion was never gonna work, jack makes the point in that its ruined since they care about arnhied so much its all they are thinking about. it would be stupid to have them all of a sudden be happy right when this all happens. i thought it was stupid when i first saw it aswell but looking back now i really like what they did, showing u how tragic the beating was and having them not show the reunion really showed how much of a disaster it was all turning out to be

Studze Kisiel

1. Gojo (jjk) 2. Levi (aot) 3. Askeladd (vs) 4. Hange (aot) 5. Shidou (bl) 6. Sukuna (jjk) 7. Dazai (bsd) 8. L (death note) 9. Howl (hmc) 10. Geto (jjk) I'm rocking with yalls reactions you basically watched all my favourite shows

Mia Malvik

I was super disappointed about the off screen reunion when I first watched this, but now on second watch I really appreciate the way it was written. Can't say I care much for Arnheid's character myself, but the fact that their reunion was completely thrown in the background to amplify the gravity of the situation with her almost being beaten to death is kinda genius. It's not written to satisfy the viewer, it's written to build stronger connections between new characters, and to show the reality of the world they live in (show, don't tell). We already know Leif and Thorfinn care about each other, we've seen their reunion before and can imagine what it'd be like this time. Their lives have changed, and they have new priorities and people they care about. Still, I don't think there's a right or wrong way of writing it. The reunion would have been cool to see, and I think it's all a matter of preference and it's okay to be upset about. At the end of the day, I appreciate the authors choice to go with the unorthodox way because that's what he's been doing this entire time and I think it has payed off severely

Mia Malvik

He's so sick. His confession is one of the greatest scenes I've ever watched

Frizen

When the slave owner with a sex slave turns out to not be such a good person. It's interesting how so many people initially kind of ignore what Ketil is because the show presents him as a generally "nicer" person.

Chrisiyyi

Time in movies and series is not just always in sequence, a lot of time things like thoughts or flashbacks happening for the audience, slowed down. Its not like every second in the episode is the same as real life, or if a flashback or inside thought happens they just staring into nothingness. For example thorgil and co landing can be weeks later from the incident with Gardar. Thorfin and Einar have been living with arneid and co for a long time, ofcourse they would feel like basically family ect.

adam

is it just me or gardar's character felt a bit forced sometimes, they add a random character in the middle of an arc just to add salt into the wound, i know that he's important for thorfin's development but it's hard to really sympathize for him because if only he didn't go to the war all that mess would never happen, also snake and his men were just doing their job, the real victim is arnheid because she didn't choose to be in that situation, it's a tragic situation nonetheless

Chrisiyyi
>>114061912

Also Ketil lost insane amount in such a short time, it basically broke him, he lost everything when he was younger, He lost everything again he worked for while not being his fault and trying to be a "nice guy", yes he is a giant clown for releasing all his anger on Arneid though. Also remember in his eyes the child could be with her husband or someone else, she broke his trust and in his eyes it couldve sound like a excuse to say its his kid which probably made him even angrier.

Mia Malvik
>>114061229

Another thing, Miklagard is the norse name for the ancient greek city Byzantium, modern day Istanbul. A lot of vikings went there in their eastern expansion. That explains Snake's weird looking sword

Ali Lulz

The thing is the reunion wouldn't be that interesting because a close friend is on the verge of death, and they wouldn't really talk. I definitely don't expect them to be happy in their reunion when Arnheid just almost got beat to death. I'm under the assumption that they reunited in that room with Arnheid, so they really couldn't speak to each other, because Arnheid is just destroyed.

James

The main themes in this season revolve around pain and suffering, and hence, this is season is called the "Slave Arc," so Yukimura was probably more focused on writing Arnheid's story at that point. Similar to what Carter said, a second reunion between Thorfinn and Leif would not have a great impact to the overall Vinland Saga story. The end of the season was definitely impactful to a lot of people, but only because we're were able to build connections to the main characters (not just Thorfinn) which takes time in writing.

Shiro
>>114061955

I think hindsight is always perfect. Of course, Gardar had no idea how the situation was going to turn out, and they went to war hoping to improve their socioeconomic situation overall. They should have left a few people behind to protect the village, but unfortunately didn’t. Gardar is not a war crazy person. He wanted to improve his family’s situation!

Alan

Damn Leif and thorfinn can’t even have a proper reunion because of that POS ketil

Alan

I like how during the fight with thorfinn and snake they were both just like “forgive me, I was unaware of your game” lmao

Shiro

I feel for Gardar because he sets out on a task that he thinks is good, and ends up losing his family. Had the Vikings attacked while the men were still present, there was no guarantee that Gardar didn’t die protecting his family and Arnheid and Hjalti aren’t enslaved. I actually felt very bad for him as he not only had to bear the brunt of war, but also that of a very cruel slave master. Thorfinn and co. have been living relatively better lives up to this point.

adam
>>114061955

Even arnheid said that their situation were great at that time and didn't really need much but he still chose to go, he might not be war crazy but still there's always be some greed in people's heart

Caleb

Guys dont worry, its not an off screen reunion

TheSauceGuy
>>114061955

I saw a lot of people say this, but I don't think that one action makes it so I can't empathize with him.

James

1. Luffy 2. Thorfinn 3. Sanji 4. Corazon 5. Geto (the first 4 spots are absolute but this one i wasnt sure who id put so i just put someone ive been really loving recently)

TheSauceGuy

I don't think Thorfinn and Leif had a real reunion due to the crazy set of circumstances occurring, so they are likely focused on figuring things out with Canute, Arnheid, and the farm before they properly go over everything and reunite.

Shiro
>>114061955

Just because their situation is great doesn’t mean it will stay that way forever. Arnheid is arguing for the present, whereas Gardar was thinking of the future. It very well could be greed, but also ambition to make his family’s position better in the world. It’s one of those things whose outcomes one can never know. Suppose Gardar and the others stay back, there is no Viking raid. Who is to stay that the person who acquired the metals does not start erasing the inhabitants of Arnheid’s village in the future since he does not like them? I understand both their viewpoints, and it is simply tragic how things turn out to be!

Ben Martineau
>>114059908

All my family thinks it’s wild that spook is my favourite Mistborn character, he’s such a goat

Ale

The author said basically what Carter said regarding the off-screen reunion, they had already reunite before and the circumstances weren't the best for an emotional reunion. I didn't like it at first, I thought there was going to be some sort of flashback or something, but then I just understood what Yukimura was saying. I guess is fine if you like it that way or are not happy with the off-screen reunion, but they will definitely have more time to do it properly after all this. Also guys, there is this scene that was uploaded to the MAPPA Youtube channel that it's suppose to be a 18.5 "chapter" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GUlTTqc4peM you should watch it before episode 19, since the episode 19 starts after that one scene. Cheers to Snake for giving Thorfinn his iconic scar. Also, another thing, you could go back and check episode 1 of S2, you will notice that the first scenes were all about Gardar.

adam
>>114061955

it's a gamble at best and turned out to be not worth the risk unfortunately

Shiro

I understand the complaint about the reunion, but as people above mentioned, watching it the second time is better than the first. I mean, think of the sequence of events - Leif, Pater and bug-eyes Thorfinn take Arnheid away for treatment after the beating, meanwhile Snake frees Thorfinn and Einar since Ketil gave Leif permission to take them away, telling them about Arnheid's condition. No wonder Thorfinn and Einar have run back and are in shock to see Arnheid, bypassing the moment for the reunion. Thorfinn and Einar have known Arnheid for years now and they have developed a very close friendship. They must have helped each other countless times (it was in episode 4 or 5 when Arnheid runs to Pater to inform him that Thorfinn and Einar have been taken away by the retainers, though Snake is the one who stops the stupid charade). Poor Leif is in shock based on what he witnessed, and Thorfinn is a mature man now who can keep his personal feelings away for the sake of a dear friend, for whom they were worried and now see her on the verge of death. I am sure Leif and Thorfinn have a lot of catching up to do, and that will happen eventually. I can understand Thorfinn's concern for Arnheid overshadowing his reunion with Leif. You must understand by now how much Einar, Arnheid, Sverkel, and even Snake have come to mean to Thorfinn. He was ready to risk his freedom and well-being for Arnheid, surely he would be more concerned of her wellbeing upon knowing what happened with her! I think this really shows how much Thorfinn has grown as a person!

lola

So, not gonna lie… I actually was disappointed with the way Leif and Thorfinn reunited. I felt like there was a buildup and everyone was just patiently waiting for them to find each other again. But in hindsight, it just wouldn’t have made sense to have a heartfelt reunion even if the circumstances had been different. The joy of finding each other would’ve been ruined anyways after finding out Arnheid was beaten close to death. And maybe this is a hot take, but if you think about it, Thorfinn never really got to spend enough time with Leif even as a child since Leif was always traveling, to build the same connection he has with his friends. Leif has a sense of duty to bring Thors child back to his home, and Thorfinn cares for Leif because he’s a family friend. But the connection Thorfinn has with Leif, in this point in time, is not as strong as Thorfinn with Einard or even Thorfinn with Arnheid. These 3 have been together for 3-4 years now, talking in the mornings, laughing, spending time, and eating together. They’re really close, Thorfinn might even feel like Einard and Arnheid are as close to family as it’ll get at this point in time. With that being said, there’s still ALOT to unpack, and Leif and Thorfinn will have their moment at some point. But I think you guys have to try and trust the process. Try and look at the bigger picture of Vinland’s message. You’ll see that certain stories are necessary and important to build up Thorfinn’s resolve. Anyways, loved the reactions like always!! I can’t wait for you guys to finish the season!!!

bondbond53

Damn who would have thought that the slave owner was trash

Max Grodman

Top 10 (unordered) favorite characters: Shinji Ikari (Evangelion) Miyamoto Musashi (vagabond) Eren Yeager (AOT) Paul Atreides (Dune) Watashi (the tatami galaxy) Edward Elric (FMAB) Thorfinn (obviously) Zuko (avatar) Ellie Williams (the last of us) Johnny Joestar (jojos part 7) Tried to keep it to one character per media and it ended up mostly main characters. Could easily be different on a different day lol. Love the reactions been watching since AOT episode 2

Izaya
>>114071970

And also, they had already met 4 years ago. Leif found him already, they had their reunion in season one. There was no point to make another super warming reunion.

lola
>>114071970

Well for sure but I think the difference here is the person who Thorfinn was back then and who he is now. I think people wanted to see the difference in interactions. I personally think it wouldn’t have hurt to see them reunite again but like I said, for plot’s sake, it just wouldn’t have made sense.

Shiro
>>114061955

Yes, it did not turn out well, and Gardar deeply regrets it, till his dying breath! I actually find it surprising that the fandom has little sympathy for Gardar, when actually he has borne the worst brunt of slavery - physical, emotional and psychological torture, whereas Thorfinn, Einar and Arnheid have been in a relatively (and a strong emphasis on 'relatively') better situation compared to him. Some even blame him for Arnheid's situation (imagine blaming a victim for being a slave), and I understand that Arnheid may hold some resentment towards him. But I cannot blame him, for he too is a victim and he pays a huge price for his actions. I, too, initially thought that his character was shoe-horned into the story, but he is like the storm that came and wrecked everything over! The scene which made me really feel for his character was when Arnheid tells Thorfinn and Einar how she remembers his eyes were so full of confidence and now they are full of misery. It really shows how being a slave burnt his spirit and turned him into a hollow man. Of course, Snake and his men are doing their job and do not deserve death, though it is slightly difficult to feel sympathy for men who are openly harassing a woman and asking her to perform sexual acts on a prisoner for their own entertainment!

Izaya

A heartfelt reunion with tears and laughs wouldn't make much sense here. It would be incoherent. They surely will talk, they both have mouths, they can speak. But right now we have more pressing matters and urgent business to take care of, so to make this reunion the biggest deal of the series is kinda silly to me. There was never a build up for the reunion. The build up was made by you. Leif was never euphoric or displayed much emotion this season. I feel like the story didn't want make the reunion as big of a deal then yall wanted it to be. I believe its simply a mistake in the interpretation of the direction of the story or expectations misplaced. There were certain expectation for it, sure, but watching yall's reactions it felt like this was suppose to be the most decisive moment of the whole series, like, ????... I didn't expect it to raise such a topic as it did. It seems that the series and some of you are on different pages in terms of what is more important to the story right now. That is the sensation i get

RIP two dudes to the right are bots. They reacted to this set of episodes exactly how I expected them to. Go have them watch transformers in the other room or something while the other 3 finish this series lmao

Andy

I think the way the reunion was written is totally fine. The overlooking of the 2nd reunion ultimately amplifies the severity of the given circumstances. Shit is so fckn bad right now that we can't throw a pizza party and indulge in a moment of happiness. Even before Arnheid got brutally beaten, circumstances were way too shit for a happy moment. Gardar died and the escape plan failed, Thorfinn had to break his oath, Thorfinn Einar and Arnheid are awaiting severe punishment, Throkell's farm is about to be invaded by the king, Omar got his first kill and is conflicted, and Leif is in a tough spot helping fugitives escape the king. A happy reunion makes no sense.

chermo19

you really should watch Castlevania! you will love it and i think all sports anime are just not that good, i don’t think it’s suitable for reaction and your taste

James
>>114075727

I have a feeling that Carter is the only one who is going to like how season 2 ends, and future seasons as well just based on his reactions to this season so far.

James
>>114079593

I noted that the story is focus on Arnhied’s character, but I forget to mention about Thorfinn breaking his oath and using violence to save his friends. As Carter sort of mentioned, Thorfinn is going to have to grapple with the fact that maybe violence will be necessary in some cases.

bloody

im sorry but cannon is being a bit childish on wanting the reunion, what doi you think they would have said to each other? lief saying to throfinn hes grown up and changed? he already says that in the next episode

Mysterious Figure

Cannon just wanted some reunion hugs, come on someone help him out.

1. Jesse Pinkman (breaking bad) 2. Ichigo Kurosaki (bleach) 3. Senku Ishigami (doctor stone) 4. Gon Freecs (hxh) 5. Walter White (breaking bad)

>>114071970

It would have been too much narrative whiplash to go from Arnheid getting beaten to a happy warm reunion to them finding out about Arneid. It was glossed over because it would of messed with the flow of the episode.

MADHOUSE
>>114068112

Completely agree with you. Tbf when I first saw the ep I was sad that they didn't show Thorfinn and Leif's reunion, but afterwards, I realized that the situation didn't really call for a happy, "I haven't seen you in years", moment. Sure, Yukimura could have altered the way timing of certain events, like having the beating scene after the reunion (which I just can't picture flowing well narratively), but this is his story and how he wanted to tell it. Again,👍everything you said

Cannon Andrus
>>114091246

Really? Dang I mean it’s just been years and I wanted to see them reunite. It’s like picking someone up from the airport😂

Cannon Andrus

How is it a pizza party that I wanna see 2 of my favorite characters reunite after years apart? I’m confused

Cannon Andrus
>>114075727

Yeah once again, I’m not looking for thorFinn and leif to be kicking their feet giggling. I wanna see them reunite after years apart and hear their conversation. I’m confused why this doesn’t make sense

Dio

Bro I don't understand McKay and the boys siding with Snake against Gardar and Arnheid so hard. He is a literal slave who is trying to rescue his wife from slavery, yet he is the bad guy for killing 5 mercenaries trying to capture him. Make it make sense

M2GZ

Yah undoubtedly the worse two vids I've seen from this channel, it really sucks that all the themes, characterization and motivations from this arc just seem to fly so far above there heads its not even close. Carter and Jack seem like the only two that actually got something from this arc. Just sucks that if they actually committed to being invested and and saw Arnheid as a character and not just "Einar's girl" they would've understood all their motivations instead of being cold and dumb asf about it. Also were obviously gonna see Leif and Thorfinn catch up next episode what they expect them to celebrate when Arnheid just got beaten half to death.

Xio’♡

Whoa some of these comments are a bit intense😅 this is the guy’s honest reaction and thoughts. Why is it such a controversy?

Audreyldo

guys just chill, it's their hot reaction and they have the right to be disappointed. Personally i think it's a very good choice from the mangaka and with the circumstances it wasn’t the time to be happy and all! it’s like in real life sometimes the timing is bad (very often actually) and i found it very realistic, it's not a disney where all works and they are all happy at the end, it’s a realistic and cruel show and that’s why i love VS that much🙂

James
>>114101211

That’s why Gardar’s story is tragic. He was in the wrong for killing Snake’s men, but at the same time, war and slavery has turn him into a monster. Despite of all this, he was just trying to save his family, and by the time he return to his former self, he died in Arnheid’s arms.

adam
>>114101211

Snake and his men were literally just doing their job so it's much more understandable 🤷🏻‍♂️ what do you want them to do? Just let gardar kill them? lol

BigManSirob

Guys I know it sucks that most of them didn't really end up caring about Garder but would you rather have them do a fake reaction and pretend to like him? We all have our own opinions c'mon. (Minor Spoilers) Everyone talking about how they skip over the reunion but it's not like they never have a conversation about what's happened over the past few years and how they've changed they just skip over the initial meeting for the moment (I'm not saying the boys should know this they're obviously watching it for the first time). Also we can't be lying and saying we all weren't a little disappointed when the episode first came out but I feel like they've made up for it by the end of the season and with hindsight it makes sense why it didn't play out like we all thought it would. Everyone just needs to chill ong.

adam
>>114072097

Lol blame the writer who made him look pretty decent from the start

nans

I think the frustrations towards the reunion is so jarring that it really cements in the main themes of this season. We all felt ‘???’ when we first saw it and it’s completely normal to feel bitter about it, just goes to show how important Arnied is to thorfinn and how horrible timing of certain scenarios that you look forward to can mean nothing when someone u care about is close to death. I think some people are being too harsh towards the guys that feel upset about the reunion, and we want them to be honest in their reactions even if we have different opinions. That being said, of course watching it the second time around after finishing the season we would have different feelings towards the episodes that they are watching for the first time.

adam
>>114061955

I mean the only one who openly using woman for his own entertainment was ketil not snake men, and it's a common thing at that time when you lose the war there's almost a 90%+ chance that you'll become a slave so gardar must had known that from the start

celery
>>114103987

Ppl can still talk about it and explain why it was done a certain way even if their reaction is honest lmfao

BrianTheWoeful

I'm just going to keep it to TV shows to make it simple otherwise there would be a ton from books, video games or manga like Guts (Berserk) or Dr Manhattan (Watchmen) In no particular order, off the top of my head: - Desmond (Lost) - Rust Cohle (True Detective) - Dale Cooper (Twin Peaks) - Jesse Pinkman (Breaking Bad) - Tony Sopranos (The Sopranos) - Killua (HunterXHunter - best anime ever) - Utena (Revolutionary Girl Utena) - Shiki Ryougi (Fate series) - Reiner (Attack on Titan) - Shinji Ikari (Neon Genesis Evangelion) - SpongeBob SquarePants (yea you heard that right)

BrianTheWoeful

Also I thought this was a great and honest reaction. The reunion makes sense in retrospect, but I guarantee you a lot of people also had the first impression Gekkies did. It is jarring People flaming in comments need to realize we're here to hang out with da boys and this difference in opinions and readings only makes the community more engaging. Chill yall ❤️

Xio’♡
>>114103987

You didn’t understand what my comment was referring to. Yea you can discuss your take on the show and debate ideas without being rude. The “intense” comments I was referring to are people being rude to the guys for their opinion like calling them childish or saying that some aren’t appreciating the show when they’ve ALL put effort to react to it. Someone having a different take on a show should not warrant all the aggression. It’s weird behavior tbh.

J
>>114107553

It's less to do with not getting the arc or caring about Gardar and more about the way a few of them reacted to Arnheid. It's fair to mention.

Dio
>>114101211

no but you'd think there would be some sympathy for Gardar and specifically Arnheid who we've spent almost the whole season with

M2GZ
>>114101576

It just had to be said, I love the studio Gek guys but this reaction was not it.

McKay Carter
>>114101576

You must not have listened to what we discussed or just didn’t understand, what we desired after that episode was a reunion between Leif and Thorfinn to be on screen and we wanted the satisfaction of seeing it, that doesn’t mean we thought it should have happened after the Arnheid scene? No idea how to came to that conclusion, but we basically discussed ways they could have done that episode differently that would have given us the reunion we wanted and then moved into the darker scene. Hope that clears things up

ssj4rit
>>114103987

@celery bruh one commenter literally said McKay and Brigg should go to another room to watch transformers. People are butthurt af and being out of pocket. They gotta realize at the end of the day it’s literally a cartoon and no one is getting hurt lol.

Snake just doing his job vs Gardar trying to escape with his wife to freedom.. trying to wrap my head around how one is much more understandable. I guess I am missing something 😂

Dio
>>114061955

I just disagree that he felt forced. he seemed like a character who we finally got to see that felt so much pain and frustration of being a slave. Also I think the whole point of Gardar going to war was to protect Arnheid.. Who’s to say that if they didn’t go to war, the villagers would’ve been right and they got invaded anyways. then they'd be defenseless

Chris7o

This feels super random having to rank these from different media but yeah something like this: 1. Uncle Iroh 2. Zuko 3. Erwin Smith 4. Jack Sparrow 5. Batman 6. Eren Jaeger 7. Reiner Braun 8. Darth Maul 9. Walter White 10. Darth Vader/Anakin

snake literally went out of his way to KILL gardar. Gardar killed those men becuase he was trying to escape ENSLAVEMENT. How is killing an unarmed unconsscious man better than killing his captures to be free

ssj4rit

Gonna keep it to 1 per series otherwise the list might be stacked lol 1. Meruem (HxH, honorable mentions Killua, Chrollo, Gon, Hisoka,…yeah so many good characters in this show) 2. Guts (Berserk) 3. Michael Corleone (Godfather I/II) 4. Zuko (ATLA, honorable mentions Aang, Iroh) 5. Ouki (Kingdom) 6. Younger Toguro (YYH) 7. Light Yagami (Death Note, honorable mention to L - literally picked Light by a hair only because I love the arc of his rise and fall, while L is more of an intriguing enigma) 8. Reiner (AoT, honorable mentions to Zeke and Eren) 9. Gyro Zeppeli (JoJo) 10. Anomander Rake (Malazan)

ngl this has to be the worst reaction on this channel so far but I like that they are being honest and not faking reaction

bondbond53
>>114120415

Where was it said that they did not react the way we want? I personally commented on some distasteful comments made. Sure they can go ahead and react however they want and show me how they really fell about these situations so I can make my own conclusions about them. No need to white knight them mate

bondbond53

Yeah, some of you are not gonna gaslight me into thinking any criticism of the boys is out of the question sorry. People being extra rude and calling them one way or another? Sure, out of pocket and any criticism needs to be to the point. Otherwise, I still stand by my comments about the guys’ reaction to Arnheid specifically which were in poor taste. What you guys felt towards Gardar is irrelevant because that’s fine if you didn’t connect but disrespecting Arnheid is silly. And people need to stop with the “it’s just a cartoon”. When it’s hype and cool storytelling moments it’s “peak fiction” etc. but now it’s just a cartoon I guess.

Shiro
>>114125850

I get the feeling that the last few episodes (14-18) which deal with Arnheid-Gardar-Snake-Thorfinn-Einar get treated like filler by some audiences (not necessarily talking only about SG) as they are eager to see the culmination of Canute attacking Ketil's farm. But I think this 'storm' that occurs in the form of Gardar reveals interesting information about some of the characters (Arnheid and Snake) and sets up the stage for the battle. In that sense, this detour is necessary! The Gardar episode adds more stress to the farm and the characters before Canute's raid - they are short of fighting men (thanks to Gardar's berserker mode), one slave tried to escape, and two others helped her, not to mention the character's own personal conflicts. Once again, VS is not just about war, but about the stories and conflicts of individual characters (including old characters like Leif and new ones like Einar, Arnheid, Ketil, Snake, Sverkel, etc.). I think the hyping up of the show has created expectations among the reactors, and that in a way gets in their enjoyment of the show. Just keep an open mind and enjoy the journey no matter what others say, in the end, of course, it is your own prerogative whether the show was good or whether you enjoyed it (Gosh, this became another essay...)

Shiro
>>114120415

I don't think anyone said their opinions are 'invalid' based on what I read. If we consider them as members of community and friends, then sometimes some of us like to disagree with and critique our friends. Not all of us are 'yes men/women'. Granted, some comments can be harsher than others, but that is the nature of things when you are in a public space. I think this community in general is more respectful than most I have seen, which is a compliment to Studio Gek.

McKay Carter
>>114101211

I just like Snake 😂 it’s not like I hate Gardar and his motives, but the show does push you towards liking Snake and that’s exactly what I did.

Going off what cannon said we were just expecting to see the reunion on screen, there was never an expectation for some giggling cheerful meetup, we just wanted the satisfaction of seeing it on screen, very confused to how this Isn’t making sense as well.

Xio’♡
>>114125850

All that is being said is that people need to chill out with the disrespectful comments. The initial reason people were being rude was because of the focus on the reunion. You are in all your right to have your opinion on Arnheid and comment about it but you can not expect others to have the same opinion or connect or feel the same for a character as you do. In MY opinion Arnheid is fictional. Not a real person. This story never happened. Generally speaking if people feel so strongly about comments they perceive as disrespectful towards a fictional character, they should have the same energy about all the disrespect going to the guys (real people) in these comments. Neither should be ok and things should be discussed civilly. Otherwise it’s hypocritical.

Xio’♡
>>114125850

Also @Shiro I agree, I think people hyped up this show too much with “If you loved Attack on Titan you’ll love Vinland” and I think it did create expectations. Both shows share similarities but are different overall. Their whole platform is based on them being anime haters and watching different anime to discover what they like. If they don’t like slower pace anime or connect to one anime more than others that should be ok. It’s also bound to happen, they’re not going to like every anime they watch.

bondbond53
>>114125850

Personally I did not address the reunion at all because as much as I would have loved if the guys understood why it didn’t happen in this episode it still is a more subjective thing that they can have whatever opinion they want really. In my case I only ever addressed the Arnheid stuff. I respect your opinion but I simply expressed my distaste for those comments. Also if Brigg did not connect with her he could have atleast not made comments during her scenes where she’s crying so the other guys could enjoy and conenct with her more. I do not “want” a certin reaction from them and I don’t see how my criticism could be seen as that. I don’t think it’s hypocritical to both call out the rude commenters and also express distaste towards certain comments by the boys. Oh well, can’t wait for my criticism to be overshadowed by people that were rude about the reunion or whatever

James

Not every reaction is going to have some kind of intellectual post-discussion or emotional response to certain episodes. There’s nothing wrong with criticizing with how people react to certain anime, but let’s try to maintain a non-toxic environment.

Shiro
>>114101211

I have also found the general lack of sympathy for Gardar very puzzling among the fanbase (not specifically speaking about the Geks, but the fandom in general). As @Liam and @Dio pointed out, he is escaping slavery with his wife which may be a crime in their world, but I would like to think that most of the people today would be celebrating that, given how almost all of us were heartbroken when Thorfinn was taken as a slave. Yes, Snake and his men are doing their job of capturing a slave who will be killed for killing his master, but I would like to side with the slave and not his captors in this matter (and I also like Snake, just like Thorfinn). Some also blame him for Arnheid's condition. Now, granted his actions led to the outcomes as they are, but it is crazy to think he did it knowing his child would be killed and his wife enslaved. In his every conversation with Arnheid, he mentions his child at least once. The poor man has been broken physically and mentally through slavery. I think Gardar is the mirror of what Thorfinn would have been had it not been for Einar, Sverkel, Arnheid, Pater, and also Ketil to some extent. Gardar is the living embodiment of how slavery breaks a human completely, dehumanizing him and turning him into a 'feral' monster.

Shiro

On another note, someone should create a bubble chart or some data visualization chart for all the shows and characters mentioned! It would be interesting to see which characters frequently top most people's list (popular character in a way). Also, some of the shows mentioned I have not seen and look promising!

Shiro
>>114079593

The leitmotif surrounding Leif and Throfinn's interactions seems to be death or near death - Leif loses Thorfinn when Thors dies, Leif reunites with Thorfinn for the first time when Thorfinn kills the Assassin in York, and now, when Leif meets Thorfinn a second time, his friend has been beaten within an inch of her life. I personally think it was a great choice by the mangaka to have a grim second reunion, gives more options for the characters to respond in different ways.

kingkoopa98
>>114101211

I think the lack of sympathy results from people not really seeing Gardar's actions as being realistic. Like yes it is obviously understandable that he wants to escape slavery and free his wife but that course of action is obviously unrealistic and puts Arnheid in more danger than if he left her alone.

Dio
>>114120415

yea I guess you can't disagree with their reaction lol

Dio
>>114101211

It seemed the opposite for me. Imagine having your entire family taken from you, having a cruel slave master, and another slave master who's in love with your wife. I felt Gardar's pure rage and his actions reflected how feral he became which seemed realistic. Also, I don't think liking Snake or not should have anything to do with your feelings toward Arnheid/Gardar lol. Snake was definitely one of my favorite characters of the season. pretty sure the show also pushed you towards liking Arnheid, but that's obviously not what happened 😂.

Yuri

Thank you guys for giving us many VS reactions! Some episodes might feel boring or sickening because of the serious themes, but they all lead to touching moments at the end of the second season. Can't wait to hear your reviews! (I like Carter's review) Of course, no matter what others say, I'm waiting for your honest thoughts.

adam

This comment section is getting juicier and juicier lol been waiting for this last few episodes because i myself was having mixed feelings about it, it's like the writer and the storyline want you to feel some type of way but you end up didn't feel that way, so i'm glad that you guys kept the raw honesty, people hyped this season to oblivion, while the message is great, they still have so much room for improvement

Love that y’all react honestly, the last thing I want to see is you guys turn into the BS hype channel for everything. Keep doing y’all’s thing. I was shocked when I watched this myself the first time and saw thorfinn and Leif standing right next to each other without saying a word and I’d bet the large majority of viewers were. I probably would have preferred it Cannon’s way as well as it would have been less jarring. HOWEVER, trust the process boys, they still do an excellent job of tying up the lose ends.

hopefully the boys read more of your comments. I think you've been completely reasonable. Its not the reunion reaction that im "upset" about, I literally had a similar reaction to that moment and if you have negative reactions towards a writing decision, thats your reaction~!! thats how it is. what Im disturbed by are the comments on Arnheid. its not a matter of "nooo they didn't react how i want them too" Im saying the comments on Arnheids were upsetting. thats just my opinion tho

kaan

I think I have only 2 characters set in stone as my favorite fictional characters 1. Ged (Earthsea Cycle) 2. Iroh (ATLA) Rest was hard to set in order so don’t mind the order Batman Theoden (LOTR) Darth Vader (Star Wars) Erwin Smith (AoT) Monkey D. Luffy (One Piece) Zuko (ATLA) Thorfinn (Vinland Saga) Spike Spiegel (Cowboy Bebop)

OleBrr

I have a pretty solid top 4, but they change places often. They would be Askeladd and Thorfinn from Vinland Gon and Meruem from HxH Number 5 would be either Okabe from S;G or Netero from HxH

Imagine being so simple minded into thinking that "slave owner bad guy" lmao. Keitl is a deeper character than that, initially we're shown him having compassion and treating his slaves very well for that time period, he didnt even want to use violence against that slave kid in an envrionment where everyone wouldn't mind doing it.

Henrique I. Pereira
>>114061624

Damn, imagine reducing Ketil to a simple "slave owner bad!!!" chracter lmao. Tells how much media illiteracy you have to not realize that him snapping in this EP isn't expected at all given what was shown from the character so far in ALL other episodes, a good master given that time period standards, which obvisouly adds more depth to him as a character instead of him being "le bad slave owner" from the start.

Eren Jeager

1. Eren Jaeger 2. Saitama 3. Deadpool 4. Spider-Man 5. Lelouch

Frizen
>>114061624

You're missing the point. Slavery may be normal at that time but it is clearly not moral. As stated by Thorfin most slaves come from war aka violence upon another person. You think Ketil doesn't understand violence is bad? He clearly doesn't like violence. More on it clearly being immoral, Ketil has full knowledge that he can do whatever he wants with her. He's legally allowed to kill her if he chooses. A man that doesn't like violence has such control over a person that no one would care or could stop him if he chose to inact violence upon her. Do you think he doesn't understand that his relationship with her is immoral especially considering she's also a sex slave? She's literally a product of violence. Media literacy is looking past the base impression and how the author presents someone. So many people see Ketil and say wow he's such a good guy. But like what's good about him? If he was a good person he would have let Thorfin and Einar go immediately or not own a woman that was violently taken from her home as his plaything. He uses Thorfin and Einar for his own gain, he uses Arnheid for his own pleasure. He exploits other people. A person who exploits people is not a good person. The Arnheid scene was a wakeup call for people fooled by presentation. Most people I've seen barely even flinch when it shows Arnheid in bed with him and still look at Ketil in a positive light when that scene is a confirmation that he r*pes her as it is impossible for it to he consensual.

DAMN a world war 3 has ensued in the comments section 😂 I am kind of like cannon where I don't like offscreen stuff especially the reunion between Leif and Thorfinn BUT I do understand that the situation during which Leif and Thorfinn reunited was dire (Airnheid-Gardar tragedy) so I like that Carter was understanding. Ngl I was a little taken aback with the reactions of the two on the right (it seemed like yall couldn't connect with Arnheid/Gardar at a deeper level which led to saying some insensitive things 😬) but it's not something that makes me want to be rude to the boys or hate them. I understand the criticism but PLEASE let's not lose our humanity when people don't react the way we would like them to (p.s. it's normal for humans to react differently to the same situation 😉 ). Let's all try to be like Thorfinn by being kind to each other 🙏 To the two boys on the right: I hope you guys aren't too sad/hurt about the negative comments. Unfortunately, the negative side of being anonymous is that people use it as a weapon to unnecessarily hate and be vile. HOWEVER, constructive criticism (I see a several in the comment section) can be used to learn and grow not only as individuals but as content creators! With that being said, I would like to say that you guys will still be the fun loving anime lovers we as the audience came to like regardless of our differences in reaction so take care of yourselves and don't worry too much! You guys are doing amazing by being transparent and honest which is very important as a content creator! Keep up the good work 💜

Di

I personally don't see how you guys could be against Arnheid wanting to be free. You keep calling what Arnheid, Thorfinn, and Einar is doing stupid. Arnheid has been a slave for years and is forced to have sex with Ketil but she isn't supposed to fight for her freedom? Einar shouldn't want to help out a female be free because she had a husband? That's crazy.

Di
>>114061955

i don't remember the wording exactly but another person or a group of people were going to get control of the resources and that would've been bad for Gardar and everybody in his village. He left due to that not just for a profit for his family.

This is Carter, and I was the one saying this mostly. I never meant my point to come across as she isnt supposed to fight for her freedom. Her life as a slave was so tragic and no person should ever be subject to that. I was just saying that I thought the way she was going about it wasn't the best and I thought there could be better ways. But she, as all of us are human.

>>114146579

this exactly, people who are mad have probably seen what happens later on, I still haven't seen further than this, so I'm kinda with all of them here, definitely disappointed that re-union was off-screen, but at the same time understand the awkward timing of it and I'm hopeful for the future episodes. I don't think it's reasonable to be mad at anyones opinion here

kiiturii

My list in no particular order Okabe Rintarou (steins;gate) Kurisu (steins;gate) Erwin smith (aot) Uncle Iroh (ATLA) Arima kana (Oshi no ko) Sherlock holmes (BBC series) and Elliot (mr. robot) for non-anime picks I'm def forgetting some too, but these came to mind first

studiogek

Appreciate all these comments everyone, whether they were constructive or not we are always trying our best. Criticism is always welcome, but we hope since the creation of this community we have been able to show that we are a good group of guys, and if not then we hope we can going forward. Thank you all for the support and cant wait to finish this incredible season!

Bibi

I didn't think I would cry so much when Gardar died but I had to buy a box of tissue for this whole season 😭 Makoto Yukimura is such an amazing storyteller! His unorthodox and risky ways of portraying a story about war/violence/peace is extraordinary! In my humble opinion I think Vinland Saga season 2 should be a nominee for anime of the season 🙏 Can't wait for reactions to the rest of the season!!!!

Kale
>>114075727

For the end of the season maybe but season 3 will have a lot more action for the simple minded fans who complained about it lol

Kale

Is a lil hard for some people to grasp it seems that if you just saw the person who your about to sees closest friend brutally beaten half to death that you wouldn’t be able to have any happy reunion lmao, if there was some happy reunion there it would absolutely not fit lmao, anyways Fraudtil has been reveal 🦦

McKay Carter
>>114402313

That’s not what we said though… we talked about how they should have done the reunion first and fit the darker part in after, there was never any talk of trying to make the reunion work after that beating scene

Long Nguyen

As much as I want Thorfinn and Erik to have a great reunion on screen, Arnheid, Thorfinn's close friend, being heavily injured creates a somber scene building up to the episodes ahead. To have a wholesome reunion at this moment would be out of place. It was cool to hear both sides from the guys because I felt pulled between the two sides. I love what you guys do. Cheers!

Cation
>>114124905

You are a goat for having Ouki in your list.. Kingdom feels so underrated.

Cation

Seriously feels like people are letting their personal feelings/beliefs about this show get a bit too defensive. Not everyone will agree with you, but at least have the decency to listen and respect each other. Realize that agree to disagree is not so bad as some people might make it to be. I think it's important and even interesting to hear peoples opinion that me, you or someone else does not agree with. The reason I'm saying this is because it feels like it's a trend in both Youtube comments and Patreon members to crucify either members or creators because of what emotions are invoked or how we perceive things or if someone does not agree with the majority. Maybe we should all binge Vinland again so we can smoke some of that life lessons and poetry. Love you all guys

James
>>114072097

The point here is that any decent person can transform into something that would be considered unrecognizable to a person’s friends and family. This is isn’t quite “alienation,” but these sort of transformations can be hidden and driven by past and current events.

Di
>>114301752

Ok, that makes more sense to me. But it was now or never.

A

I can’t get through all of these comments but from what I can gather from a few of them is that I can definitely see both sides. Of course Arnheid’s not going to want her husband killed and Snake and his men are just doing their job. It’s a sticky situation. I am empathetic to both sides. With the reunion, I honestly didn’t really want to see it after seeing what Arnheid went through. She became a character I grew to really like so I felt it was better to show Thorfinn being there for his friends as a better choice

A_Daddy Daichi
>>114061955

I didn’t think it felt that forced. I quite liked it. I think it helped show the gravity of war/slavery to characters like Thorfinn, snake, gramps, olmar etc. Especially to Thorfinn to create a space where shit like that can’t happen

esie ♡︎

It’s nice to see your guys differing opinions but I definitely have to side with Carter and Jackson. In my opinion, no matter how the reunion could’ve been done, I don’t think it would have been satisfying in any way. Whether it be before or after certain events. The mangaka was definitely looking to evoke an emotion in his audience and doing too much could really bring you out of it. Thorfinn and Einar were so worried about Arnheid before they even saw her, it wouldn’t have been appropriate and I feel like it was well done the way it was executed. I myself was so utterly devestated after Arnheid was absolutely battered, I was literally in tears. At that point, I didn’t really care about the reunion. I can’t say that I wasn’t curious prior to everything but there really was no place for it. The thing about Vinland Saga, at least for me, is how real it feels and how it makes you feel these intensely strong bonds and connections to these characters and the trials they go through. I felt like I was right there with them and I think Yukimura did such a phenomenal job telling such a real story. I was worried about Arnheid, Thorfinn and Einar. The emotions it stirred in me was insane. I just don’t think a reunion is necessary at all at this point, even a flash back would feel pointless and too try hard. If it were any other anime, you would have gotten the reunion most wanted. There are some things that are better left unsaid (or not shown) and I think this is one of those things. That is my opinion and everyone is entitled to their own so there is no right or wrong thought.

I live for the "in-fighting" between the boys, if you can call it that. First with the Jeagerist in AOT, and now with the reunion. I think I love it so much because in both instances I have been 50/50 on both sides of the arguments and am able to see it from both perspectives. Gotta love seeing my internal conflicts over these debates be voiced perfectly by you guys, and see you all be just as conflicted as I am. Also, I know it's all in good fun between everyone on the couch, but I hope that everyone else watching can keep that in mind when discussing it in the comments.

I know no ones gonna read this since Im like 7 months late because I just finished s2 and did a rewatch with Geks V.S reaction asap, but the war about Arnheid Gardar in the comments is so funny. As someone who had the same reaction with the guys when I watched s2 alone, I understand why and how they felt with Gardar and Arnheid (apart from the Einars love jokes). The thing with Arnheid is her reaction time, maybe because of the animation timing, but the amount of time it took for her to react and take action makes it feel like forever, and it just makes you feel so impatient and irritated, wanting for her to do something faster. It might have been different if they didnt stretched it out an anticlimactic action. About Gardar, I personally couldnt sympathize with him. The entire time I was watching, I hoped he died as soon as possible, and this is not even because I like Snake or not. Sure he suffered, and sorry that it happened to him but man, I didnt feel anything when he died. With my 2nd rewatch, with Geks reaction, I did feel bad for him though, but thats it. His death still didnt move me even though I understood the theme and what it wanted to convey about the harsh life in that time. And I think its fine. Its not disappointing or disgusting, people just have different reactions to different things. Not sympathizing with something others do doesnt make you a cold hearted monster. And lastly, about the reunion, I thought it was weird but the story flow was more about Arnheid at that time so it I wasnt bothered.

GreetswithJudgement

Top characters is almost impossible for me to choose because I like different ones at different moments of my life. But there is a top one and the only one who deserves to be at the top… 1. Erwin Smith. It’s not even close.
