I actually know the pwned answer! There was a game that, when you failed something, had text that said 'you've been owned!' The devs obviously made a typo and, before it could be fixed, it became an instant joke in the community, and it quickly became gamer slang, and then wider online slang, and then regular slang. Don't remember the specific game though.

^facts. There was a point when the laundry product went from standard shonen stuff to "damn... this is pretty mediocre". The only reason why the laundry product is considered a "big 3" is due to the time it was released. In 2022, even a mid-tier anime like Fairy Tail has more value as entertainment.
