Amazing thougts on the first question. I'd add that having easier ideas for someone else's project is also the modder effect, or content designer effect. Content design is easy, in a sense that you don't have to make underlying system for the content, the system is already there, and when you bring new stuff to it and it doesn't work well you can iterate on that small stuff and not on the whole system. It's fun, it's easy to start doing, it's less stressful. I think it's also partially the reason for many homage games - the structure is there, we redesign content. The more you make it different and unique, the more blank page you start with. And I believe that the matter of taste is really about understanding your own and other people emotional experiences... When some successfull studio says "we just made a game we always wanted to play" this really is about "having dreams" and having *imagination*. "I dream of game where so and so and so", i *can imagine this super cool experience where so and so*, and since I can imagine it, I can make it happen. Or try at least. That's why people set out to make a game "of a genre (usually of a mode)" of some trend - because they've already seen it, so they can imagine it. So each time one makes a creative decision that they wish is not copied from a reference, they're at the mercy of their imagination really, at the mercy of their ability to imagine a thing they haven't experience yet. And all prototypes you make to validate something are only as useful as one can use the results to fuel their imagination and interpret the results through their imagination. PS: I love the ultimate sum up of "is it art" discussion is about gaining an upper hand in "my taste is better because I like this important stuff and you like this trash garbage" :DDD got me laughing Btw I believe such discussions in comments section are better to start here, not under YT video?
