its pretty simple really, he doesn't want kaien to feel the shame of not being able to uphold his matrimonial promise to protect his wife's honour. if they stepped in he would see himself as failing to protect her physical being and her honour as a woman and soul reaper, making him unworthy of her all along.

You guys kept saying you don't get it. The only reason is, because you already know that he dies. The characters didn't know 100% he would. The assumption most likely was, she and the others died because they weren't as strong. This guy was a lieutenant. Ultimately though, at his rank, he knew what he was asking for, and Ukitake understood.
