Am I crazy, or is it CRAZY to let people gamble on their credit card bill!?

I don't know if the wider public cares about the meta-trends of gambling and scams being accelerated through big tech... but I wanted to rant about this a bit, because I don't see anyone else talking about it... and big tech's role in financing the development of these products.

What? Yeah this is fucking insane.

dude, I love gambling on my credit card bill, next I'm going to wager my monthly power usage on this blackjack game

Gambling is always in the house's favor. That's the only reason they do it. On-line gambling doesn't even have to keep the carpets clean, the lights on, and feed you free drinks. Nearly pure profit.

I love you speaking on this. I recall playing a mobile game and enjoying playing it because I was part of a guild that my best friend and other people from my country were part of. However, I started realizing that maybe the micro transactions were maybe not as cheap as they're portrayed and, because of my ADHD, impulsivity and "gamification" and "gatcha/loot box/slots" style of rewards and opening items can be addictive. I went to my transaction history and was flabbergasted. I deleted the app the same day. I was asked to come back but I just knew that it would not be good for me. I literally told my BFF- "This is gambling. They get you by turning even the free rewards into a spin or a slot or something of the kind. I already have a predisposition for vices, I do not need to develop a gambling habit" but I probably did, if only slight. I played the game for about 2 years. I was having fun and all the money, there's no real value in it. I know you feel disheartened when it feels like speaking into a vacuum but a lot of us care and those that see this video and maybe it clicks for them too, they will appreciate it too. You're not adding to the financial illiteracy, you're doing your small part in trying to mitigate it.

Also, calling this "money management" is such a fucking insult.

I can't imagine gambling on a computer of any kind. Including slot machines. I write software and obviously the software running the game can decide whether you win or lose. There may be some rules about how often the players have to win but you can be certain that it will never go above that. Even worse, with enough information about you the software can probably pay out just often enough to keep you coming back. I feel like the last few decades have been all about finding ways for the rich to extract more money from the poor. You have gambling and crypto as ways for the poor to think they are going to make money and instead lose it all. You have private equity buying companies and then extracting the value from their customers (aka enshittification). You have skyrocketing CEO salaries and plummeting average salaries. You have influencers and other "famous" people hawking crap to their fans. Now you have open corruption in governments (at least in the US) that reduce protections for regular consumers and enable widespread fraud. I definitely feel your hopelessness.

As a European, it's been very fun seeing the USA “discover” gambling. In the beginning I thought “huh, I guess that's one fewer Puritan legacies” and assumed it'd be handled like in Europe. Some countries, like the UK, have a long tradition of chains of physical betting shops, while others have a corner in some supermarkets, or small independent shops with flashy lights and slotmachines, mostly frequented by a small group of addicted gamblers. But then big tech got involved, and it raced past anything we've ever seen before.

Thank you for the information. Here in Sweden gamling is a lot more regulated, but som predatory gambling can still exist because they are based in other EU-contries that are mot accepting towards gambling, like Malta.

It is indeed crazy to let people bet on everything. Even events that can be easily manipulated. Because as we know, if something can be corrupted, it will be corrupted. I don't say betting should not exist, but it should be strictly regulated, also because of its addictive nature,
