UPDATE: Thank you Ali Schlesinger, Alex Knott, Jper, Eric Chang, and many others for helping PBF reclaim our Facebook page from scammers!

For a while I had joint custody of the FB account with the hackers. I eventually found that I could not stop them from posting, but I COULD edit their posts. I’m not sure if this led them to get frustrated and lose steam, but I took some delight in hacking the hackers. I have no idea what engineers were busy on the backend, but somebody out there managed to lock them out…for now.

…

As some of you may know, the PBF facebook page has been taken over by evil forces exploiting trusted followers for clicks on monetized videos (please don’t engage, except to report suspicious activity or follow the page (though you may want to mute the page until this issue is overcome).

I’m talking with some kind employees at meta about recovering the PBF page from the inside-out, but the process is deeply mysterious and full of dead ends. I can’t express how dreadful it feels to go through consumer channels and “help” options. It’s crazy-making.

Anyways, I feel better for making this comic. Here are a couple more images that didn’t make it into the chronicle:

Really sorry to hear about this. I've been lucky to avoid this sort of BS though I do get spammed on my business email multiple times a day by presumably phony web designers and SEO consultants.

Rob Allison

Oh man sorry about getting hacked, that's a giant pain in the ass to recover from.

Kieran Leahy

Wtf, that's awful Nicholas, I'm so sorry to hear that.

MaB

Damn, I'm so sorry! The Slack Wyrm Comics page got violently hacked too, to the point they had to open a new one! I stopped following because I kept getting my feed overcome by very close videos of asian ladies's naughty bits. What kind of bastard does this to funny pages that bring some joy in this very dark world? Hope everything gets better for you, and that your scammers get a very nasty gut bug. Which will manifest in front of the people they care about the most. If such people exist.

Chris Koeberle

Ugh, that's so awful. I'm so sorry. Facebook seems to be extremely bad at dealing with "the wrong person is in control of this account" problems.

T.F. Stevens

I’ve heard of this happening to a number of people, Facebook has zero interest in getting it sorted because the fake accounts really push for engagement and at the end of the day that’s all the company cares about.

Charles Villa

I wish I had some ideas to fix the current situation. In the future, I suggest using a password keeper and generating a unique random password for every site. I am unfamiliar with Meta's business methods, so I cannot make any useful statement there. The issue with controlling an account is Meta cannot easily determine who is the real person. If calling them was enough, hackers would call and say they are the person.

Pavel Mises

Well, that sucks. Another reason to leave Facebook behind.

Matthew Presser

Thank you for taking the time and energy to share your harrowing experience with us, Nicholas. It is a Pyrrhic victory to be able to produce art from pain like this. I hope you are able to find closure.

Chris Frochaux

Sounds like it's more reality than fiction... Thoughts and prayers!

Gunnstein Lye

That's a great comic, it may help others avoid the same fate.

Paul Baxter

I feel like that dumbass Cookie Monster all the time. You are not alone.

Adam Dusen

Damn! That's a real bummer. Here's hoping Meta steps up, stops being useless, and manages to fix things at some point. At least you still have access to patreon.

Sven Viking

“I can’t express how dreadful it feels to go through consumer channels and ‘help’ options.” This is becoming increasingly common with all kinds of companies :(. In many cases if you have a serious problem (including the company itself essentially defrauding you) there’s no reasonable way to resolve it.

Inscrutamensch

Good to be back! Let me start by saying I CANNOT AGREE WITH YOU MORE regarding "phones"; the fact one HAS NO CHOICE now but to have an iSoulSucker (or at best, some stupidass thing that ONLY PRETENDS to be a "pre-i" phone) is abominable and really shows how little power anyone but a tiny gang of Hapsburg-jawed plutocrats have anymore. I know we're not alone, either. If only someone could start MAKING things like they used to before the Cult of Boeing damned the 21st Century to be what it is rather than what it could've been, there'd be a market, to say the least (WTH is my overeducated, alienated, bony non-ass talking about? This is a spicy meat-a-ball right here, but hopefully it'll help: https://indi.ca/the-boeing-737-max-and-the-crash-of-capitalism/ )!

Timothy Roller

I've switched to a "dumber" phone. It has the capabilities of a normal phone, but only shows them in black and white eink, so it isn't enjoyable to watch videos or scroll pictures on. That way I have the connection to others if I need it, but none of the insidious aspects.
