In 2019, the New York times approached me about doing a book-themed piece for the back page of the NYT Book Review.

We did some really fun brainstorming, but I never heard back from them after sending along this idea 😩

Unfortunately it appears Toby and Beatrix both committed suicide by shooting themselves in the back of the head two or three times.

I legit laughed out loud at this

There really are some intriguing mysteries in those books! Shame on NYT for not going forward with this!

You, Sir Gurewitch, are a cheeky bastard. In all seriousness, I'm inclined to think the Epstein case did to the decades-old taboo against "conspiracy theories [sic]" what the Bernie Sanders campaign did to the decades-old taboo against being a "socialist [sic]" - no surprise, though, the NYT would retreat to the shrinking Isle of Oligarchic Denial; my grandfather read the thing cover-to-cover every day of his life, but they have long-since damned themselves. Your being passed over is probably for the best. Watch your back, Nick. Seriously. One take-away from this is that somebody is Watching Your Career With Great Interest.

THE MISSING CONVERSATION. Toby and Beatrix were arguing something forgettable about sawblades, when suddenly it was gone. Toby: So. Beatrix: So. Toby: Um. They never chatted easily again for the rest of their lives. Every time they said anything to each other, which was only when necessary, it felt like waking a sleeper to ask them the time. Every time they passed each other saying nothing, it felt like trying to breathe normally with an elephant on their stomachs.
