Does anyone know Arabic well enough to check my script?

I'm not sure how long this will last on other platforms because it depicts "hate". Curious to know if you guys find it offensive. I think the loss of 3 (potentially 6) wishes speaks to the idiocy of this xenophobia, but I feel increasingly out of touch about what is offensive.

I personally think it's fine but I think it would be best to ask the actually potentially offended people. I think the point gets across just fine tbh.

What is the Arabic intending to say? The standard "I grant you three wishes" type thing?

Christian

I'm a conservative and I'm not offended by this. The boy seems open to the genie, the dad apparently doesn't trust the genie. Is it funny? Eh, I guess. Is it offensive? Not in my opinion.

Bobby

I agree with Angel, I think the punchline could be hammered home if the two guys were in a situation where the genie could have really helped them.

What if panel three had the boy yelling "go back to your country!" and then the lamp disappears and the kid's family, stranded on some island, cheer him on

Rémy Parasquive

There's nothing offensive about it. Everything is understandable, funny and smart. If someone tells you that this comic could be enjoyed by a xenophobe, then he didn't understand the point of the strip and that's his fault, not yours ;)

Chris Frochaux

I don't see much hate. Just plain stupidity from the part of the father. Looks like a fishing boat, which suggests the kid fished out the lamp from the lake. If the kid's wish had been to return to the time where America WAS great, I wonder how the genie would have handled it.

Wesley Bakewell

I thought it was funnier with just the first two panels

Jon

I also think the first two panels are sufficient. Maybe make the boy a bit angrier? A third panel could be the lamp in a trash can with something funny, maybe a Kapernick jersey, Nike shoes, or some other boycotted product?

Chris P

I think the gag depends too much on the hat; e.g. the 4th panel could be interpreted as dad giving lesson in self-reliance without full cultural context. Maybe: add dad to 1st panel looking expectant (maybe envisioning riches/women/fame), ditch 4th panel? I think that would emphasize the "oh shit it's an ARABIC genie" aspect.

What if the kid wishes for a border wall and winds up stuck inside while the country burns around him? Or is that too on the nose?
