The Fates

I am confused as to why they referred to themselves as Salem's older sisters? Did Salem not create the Grimm? Also, how long until the next world?

Alice

This is a much better take on RWBY's lore

Tyric Gaias

Welp this definitely isn’t the canon timeline 😂

Jokarun

Hmm, A real case of "Giving frodo a lightsaber means you have to give Sauron a Death star" but the surprising thing is that its not the death star I was expecting. I was expecting a Dragon Grimm; not a bird brain.

Azrea

Well damn, I was working on an omake of that was going to be Jaune and co meeting up with Team RWBY then trying to get back to Vale and being waylaid for a little conversation with Salem. Might have included a session of strategy with Ozpin and the teachers. Now I have no clue how I should factor the new info, given I had assumed that Titans were Salem’s peers who she had no control over and not vaguely superior to her. It doesn’t change too much but it does change how I think while writing. As for the chapter itself, I think you did a good job depicting Torchwick. The fact that despite it all he does care for Neo enough to risk himself is a nice touch and what makes him more than just boringly self-absorbed. Though his protestations about not being racist are a little weird given he’s constantly calling them animals. Like sure, you might dislike them because they lack competence and the style you (Torchwick) is so obsessed with but I don’t quite think you get to claim that’s the only reason while throwing racial slurs around. Idk, it just seems a weird thing for him to claim in his own mind. I can easily see him not being willing to admit it out loud because being a racist isn’t stylish and is “below” him. The Fates’ entrance was very epic and mysterious. I genuinely can’t imagine how you’re going to play that mystery level after Titan if Salem is the youngest Titan. I will say I felt like something was missing in this chapter but that could just be that my mood is off right now and I couldn’t focus on the chapter fully. The interaction with the Dragon now has me unable to stop thinking how that fight will turn out. Also it does bring up a question. Will the Grimm Dragon be an actual Dragon too? Or will it be a Drake or some kind of Wyvern or Wyrm? Given I can see the two God’s being too arrogant to allow anyone else to be “True Dragons.” Honestly don’t see how Beacon will survive this one. Going off the assumption that the Grimm the Fates dropped into the barrels automatically spawn artificially aged (Advanced+) because of course they do, this really seems even more hopeless than Canon. Maybe if they can push the Grimm back Jaune can go full Dragon and turn the tunnel into a flaming chokehold but with the sheer number of Grimm I don’t think that will work for long. I had assumed you would want to prevent Beacon’s fall but it seems like you’re going to let it happen despite Jauncifer’s efforts and use that as the impetus to skip worlds.

TheTinyGrayDog

My guess? These three are the last stage Grimm that was hinted at before... and if they are claiming to be Salem's older sisters then these things are OLD and probably have been around before Salem was even born.

Dragonhulk

This was good, but not quite as good as MHA 100. This was more a creeping sense of Horror as you digest what you read and it just gets worse and worse as you think about it, rather than the WTF just happened feeling of your other story. Still I think June increased the Tier of this entire world by waking up all these Titans.

Azrea

No, they explicitly said they were Titans. There’s another level after Titans that’s unnamed. And (this is in response to OP) the Grimm weren’t created by Salem. They were created by the God of Destruction. The GoD just turned Salem into a Grimm when she annoyed him, we have no clue how much time passed between Grimm being created and Salem being cursed.

Dragonhulk

The God of destruction created the Grimm. This indicates that they were created by that deity directly, and that Salem only got on their level after she came out of the Grimm Pool.

fireball77

Oooooh, okay I'm not actually familiar with RWBY lore, I've only ever read the fanfics I'd always thought Salem was made into the very first Grimm and all other Grimm were made from her

PublicLee Speaking

RWBY actually got dropped in Tier after the last couple Volumes went out. I went 'Nah, it's a T7 for a reason'. So it's an AU, but one that is Canon Compliant in V1-3, merely because, at that point, they hadn't fucked with enough stuff to draw the attention of... Others.

PublicLee Speaking

Remember, Beacon is separated from Vale by an enormous lake, and, unlike Alsius, Haven, or Shade, is not located within the capital city of its nation.

PublicLee Speaking

It's still gonna be a bit. As for the Origin of the Grimm... Remember that the knowledge of the world we have is based on myth and legend, and that, for instance, Oz Didn't Know About The Emerald City under Patch. While we know the Brother Gods existed, from Oz's PoV sections, the Brother Gods also canonically Lie when it suits them. Edit: Oh, and the GoD didn't Grimmify Salem, she was turned immortal by the God of Light as a punishment for going to the GoD after the GoL told her to get fucked, the GoL telling the GoD that she lied when she never did, she just didn't correct the GoD's misunderstanding (something the GoL would then do to Oz later, but it's okay when the GoL does it, apparently), the GoL making sure that Salem would never be reunited with the man she loved in the afterlife (where Oz was canonically waiting for her for... a while, turning down the GoL's offer of employment to go back to wait for her until the GoL grudgingly admitted that she was still alive, making no mention of the fact that the GoL was the reason Oz hadn't been reunited with her yet). After the Brother Gods outed and Murdered All Of Humanity, she threw herself into the Grimm Pool to try and kill herself, and it didn't work, Grimmifying her instead.

Azrea

Hmm, that does change things. The first thing to come to mind immediately is Jaune hiding underneath the water as the Grimm approach, and bursting out while going full Dragon. The surprise would let him napalm a good amount of Grimm and pull back, but that’d be a one time deal. Other than that, I have a hard time visualizing landscapes, so I’d have to reread the description of Beacon and Vale to see what strategic or tactical benefits the geography offers.

PublicLee Speaking

So, yeah, TL;DR, the Brother Gods are lying dicks, and take anything V4+ with a block of salt, as, while I will try and work some stuff in, like Argus' existence, anything that we're told, and not shown, very well might be an outright Lie, which includes the lore dump from the Exposition Genie, who is explicitly a creation of the God of Light.

PublicLee Speaking

The writers were REALLY bad when it came to the setting, seemingly of the 'figuring stuff out ahead of time limits us' school of 'writing', which is almost universally shit, but we do get the occasional establishing shot like this: https://i.imgur.com/fX7PUt7.png

PublicLee Speaking

I couldn't find it, but there's a scene where Glynda and Ironwood talk at night on Beacon's landing pad and you can see the lights of Vale in the distance behind them, seemingly two-four miles away. It got brought up as a plot point in DR, as Beacon should be swamped with Grimm, or at least have massive fortifications itself, but just... doesn't. Which is likely due to bad writing, but I'm saying A Wizard Did It.

Azrea

Holy shit does that even count as a lake anymore? That size is mind-boggling! I simply have no idea how to defend somewhere like that, that sheer drop to the lake is perfect for hiding aerial Grimm and having them swarm the defenders while they’re focused on the land based ones. It does make sense for Ozma to have some minor Grimm repellent methods, even if they might require his personal presence. Yeah, I definitely agree with you on that “school” of writing which is honestly not giving a shit about internal consistency.

Dragonhulk

I'm guessing a big old Dragon of creation is a neon sign saying we are fucking with this, pay attention.

Tyric Gaias

Oh I can see that, but the Titans being Salem’s superiors or her equal is different.

Gray Apples

Okay, dunno if this is intentional or a slip up, but the literal last line of the chapter reads "Meeting a Titan always is!" Jumping over to A Conversation With The Wizard, Part Two (Chapter 54), it goes New, Grown, Advanced, Alpha, Behemoth, Behemoth+1 and finally Behemoth+2. The last two didn't really get a name, outside of Jauncifer deciding that Behemoth+1 is called a Titan, because he thinks it sounds cool and thats what he was initially calling the Emerald City Behemoth, again, because he thinks it sounds cooler. I'm just trying to clear things up so my dumb brain can decide how terrified it wants to be. Did we just meet a Behemoth or a Titan (Behemoth+1)? I imagine the "Big Oaf" is one step beyond The Fates, so either Titan or Behemoth+2. We haven't met any Titans before, so I'm just curious. I'm also excited to find out the name for Behemoth+2, but I imagine that'll either be really really soon or a good ways off. Great chapter btw, Roman's ego narration was both annoying and fun to read through.

Zerak

Nice chapter, and we see what is after behemoth, but I was expecting more from chapter 100 since you hyped it up before (I actually read the last 3 chapters in one go). I was expecting him to go Full Dragon in chapter 100 or other worlds to open or what have you.

Daniel Einspanjer

This was a very fun chapter, but it really makes me want to get another four or five chapters to see things come together before summer! I don't suppose threatening to throw money at you would help, would it? ;)

Azrea

So, Lee, I think I figured out what was feeling off about this chapter for me. I’m rereading DR from the beginning because I’m procrastinating, and I just finished chapter 60 where Roman first got some screen time. The two instances feel like they’re written very differently. It’s hard to pin down what exactly the difference is in words but they don’t even feel like the same character. You are the more experienced writer here, I’m sure if you look at them side by side you can more clearly understand what I’m picking up on. And, speaking as someone who really likes your use of italics and who plans to use more of them in my writing, even I think you went a little heavy on them this time. There were a few times where it stood out, like “And by they, he meant the White Fang.” where just italicizing Roman in the next sentence would have worked fine. At the end of the day, it’s stylistic choice, and while I typically like yours I do feel you went a little all in.

Templar9999

Behemoth +1 and +2 aren't given names, but they are described. +1 is slightly smaller than a behemoth, but fully armored with no visible shadow. +2 is humanoid in shape and radiates darkness. Given the Fates' description, they would most closely resemble +2. Titan in classical myth also refers to the progenitors of the Olympians. Beings that were closer to forces of nature than the physical gods that Greek myth is known for. This would also be closer to what I would expect from a Grimm that can outright block a Kamehameha from a Dragon of Creation.
