[Next Day]

By the following morning, the Palmetto case had gone from an old wound everyone wanted buried to the only thing anyone inside the LAPD could talk about.

Dan Espinoza's confession had changed everything.

Once he turned himself in, handed over the evidence he'd secretly kept, and gave a complete statement about what happened inside the warehouse, Lieutenant Olivia Monroe had very little room to maneuver. Whatever personal feelings existed between the officers involved no longer mattered. A detective had admitted to shooting another officer, concealing evidence, withholding information from an active investigation, and allowing another detective to take the professional fallout for months.

Olivia suspended Dan immediately pending a full Internal Affairs investigation. His badge and service weapon were surrendered before noon, and Internal Affairs officers spent the rest of the morning interviewing him behind closed doors.

The evidence Dan had hidden proved equally devastating.

Financial records connected Malcolm Graham to Nikolas Aoudi. Phone records showed repeated contact between Malcolm and people tied to the drug operation. There were photographs, copies of transactions, and enough documentation to establish that Malcolm had been profiting from it. It turns out, Dan found Aoudi's stash where he kept all the proof of their dealings in case Malcolm turned against him.

Within twelve hours, the story surrounding Malcolm Graham collapsed completely.

The officer who'd been praised as a hero injured in the line of duty was suddenly being described across every major Los Angeles news station as a corrupt detective who had used his badge to protect criminals. Someone from inside leaked the news.

The mood inside the precinct changed almost as quickly.

Officers who'd spent months glaring at Chloe suddenly found their computers extraordinarily interesting whenever she walked past. A few offered awkward apologies. Others simply avoided her completely, apparently hoping silence would erase every whispered insult and accusation they'd thrown in her direction.

Chloe didn't particularly care about any of them.

Being proven right hadn't felt nearly as satisfying as she'd once imagined.

Dan was suspended, her divorce had gained another ugly explanation, Malcolm was exposed, and an entire precinct now had to confront the possibility that they'd spent months defending the wrong person while treating the woman asking legitimate questions like a traitor.

By early afternoon, cameras filled the steps outside LAPD headquarters.

Olivia stood behind a podium wearing her uniform, with several senior officers positioned behind her and dozens of reporters gathered below. Camera flashes burst across the crowd while news crews transmitted the statement live across Los Angeles.

Olivia waited until the noise settled before speaking.

"Yesterday, new evidence came to light regarding Detective Malcolm Graham and the events surrounding the Palmetto investigation. That evidence establishes serious misconduct and criminal activity involving Detective Graham."

Questions immediately started flying from reporters, though Olivia raised one hand and continued before taking any of them.

"The Los Angeles Police Department has a responsibility to uphold the law regardless of who violates it. A badge doesn't excuse corruption. A uniform doesn't place anyone above accountability, and I will never support protecting an officer simply because that officer happens to be one of our own."

Inside the precinct, several officers watched the conference on television.

Chloe stood near the back of the bullpen with a cup of coffee in her hand, listening quietly.

Olivia continued on the screen.

"Detective Daniel Espinoza has been suspended pending a complete Internal Affairs investigation into his actions during and after the Palmetto incident. He has cooperated with investigators and voluntarily provided evidence relevant to Detective Graham's criminal activities."

The reporters immediately started shouting questions about Dan.

Olivia waited again before addressing the part of the situation that had become increasingly ugly online since Malcolm's name first appeared in the morning news.

"I also want to make something absolutely clear regarding Detective Graham's family. His wife and son are cooperating fully with investigators. At this time, we have no evidence suggesting either of them had any knowledge of Detective Graham's illegal activities, and they should not be blamed or harassed for actions they had no involvement in."

Chloe lowered her coffee slightly.

Malcolm had made his own choices. His family hadn't.

Olivia finished her prepared statement by confirming that the department would review previous cases involving Malcolm and establish an independent audit of evidence connected to his investigations.

Then she opened the floor to questions.

The press conference became chaotic almost instantly.

One reporter demanded to know why Chloe's allegations hadn't been taken more seriously months earlier. Another asked whether department culture had protected Malcolm. Someone else wanted to know how many officers might have been involved.

Olivia didn't run from any of it. She admitted mistakes had been made, promised a complete review, and through investigation.

Watching from the bullpen, Chloe couldn't decide whether the whole thing made her feel relieved or exhausted... Probably both.

By evening, the story had already changed Los Angeles's memory of Malcolm Graham. His photograph still appeared on television, although the captions underneath had changed.

CORRUPT LAPD DETECTIVE EXPOSED.

PALMETTO INVESTIGATION VINDICATES DETECTIVE DECKER.

INTERNAL AFFAIRS INVESTIGATION EXPANDS.

The word hero had disappeared remarkably quickly.

..

[That Evening]

[Hospital]

The hospital room felt different without Malcolm's family inside it.

For months, his wife had visited regularly, often sitting beside him for hours while their son occasionally came along. Both of them had believed Malcolm was a good cop who'd been nearly murdered while doing his job.

They'd also believed Chloe was the detective trying to destroy his reputation while he couldn't defend himself.

Their anger toward her had never been subtle.

Now the truth was everywhere.

Malcolm hadn't been an innocent officer caught in someone else's violence. He'd been corrupt, and the evidence was strong enough that even the people who'd defended him most fiercely couldn't pretend otherwise.

His wife hadn't come that evening.

Neither had his son.

The decision to remove Malcolm from life support had already been made before the evidence surfaced, and neither of them changed it afterward. They simply told the hospital they wouldn't be present.

Chloe understood more than she wanted to.

Whatever love they'd had for Malcolm had collided with a truth neither of them had been prepared to face. Maybe they were angry. Maybe they couldn't stand beside his bed after learning the man they'd spent months defending had lied to them as thoroughly as he'd lied to everyone else.

Chloe wasn't going to judge them for staying away.

Only a handful of officers showed up.

Most of the precinct had originally planned to attend when Malcolm was still considered a fallen hero. After the news broke, those numbers vanished.

A few cops still came because they'd known him for years and couldn't erase every memory in a single day.

Chloe came for a different reason. She needed to see this through. She stood in Malcolm's hospital room with both hands inside the pockets of her coat while machines quietly worked around the bed.

Malcolm looked exactly as he had the last time she'd seen him... still and pale. It was difficult to connect the unconscious man lying beneath white sheets with the months of damage surrounding his name.

One officer stood near the window while another remained beside the door. Nobody spoke much.

There wasn't anything useful left to say.

Chloe slowly moved closer to the bed and looked down at Malcolm and remembered the warehouse again. For months she'd wanted Malcolm to wake up because she believed he held the answer to everything. Now she finally had the truth, and Malcolm had never opened his eyes once.

A doctor entered several minutes later and quietly spoke with the nurses before approaching the small group.

"We're ready."

Nobody answered immediately.

The doctor looked around the room, perhaps expecting a family member to step forward.

There wasn't one.

Chloe swallowed and gave a small nod.

The doctor moved toward the equipment.

One nurse adjusted the IV while another checked Malcolm's monitor one final time. The ventilator continued its steady rhythm beside the bed, filling his lungs mechanically before releasing again.

Chloe watched the machine.

For some reason, that sound suddenly seemed incredibly loud.

The doctor placed one hand near the controls and looked around the room once more. Then he switched off the ventilator.

The mechanical breathing ceased.

A nurse carefully disconnected the tube while Malcolm remained completely motionless beneath the hospital lights.

The doctor finally pulled the plug...

Chloe stood beside Malcolm's bed with her arms hanging loosely at her sides, watching the monitor flatline while the remaining officers stayed respectfully silent behind her.

Then Malcolm's body jerked violently.

He sucked in a sharp, desperate breath as though he'd suddenly broken through the surface of deep water. His back arched from the bed, his fingers tightened around the sheets, and another ragged gasp escaped him before his eyes snapped open.

Chloe recoiled several steps in shock. "What the hell?"

The doctor reacted almost immediately, lunging back toward the bed as Malcolm dragged another breath into his lungs. One of the nurses rushed for the controls while another hit the emergency call button beside the wall.

"Malcolm, can you hear me?" the doctor asked while grabbing his shoulder and trying to keep him from moving too violently. "Stay still. Don't try to sit up."

Malcolm didn't seem to hear him. His breathing remained wild and uneven while his unfocused eyes moved across the ceiling and around the unfamiliar faces surrounding him. His hands clawed weakly at the blanket as confusion and panic spread across his expression.

More medical staff rushed into the room within seconds.

Chloe moved farther out of their way as doctors and nurses crowded around the bed, checking Malcolm's pulse, blood pressure, pupils, and oxygen levels while reconnecting equipment that had only moments earlier been prepared for permanent shutdown.

Malcolm coughed harshly and turned his head as another breath tore painfully through his throat. His eyes moved across the room until they landed on Chloe.

Recognition slowly appeared.

"Decker..." he rasped.

Chloe froze.

The sound of her name coming from Malcolm Graham after months of silence sent an uncomfortable chill through her. She stared at him while the doctors continued working, unable to decide whether she was relieved, horrified, or simply too stunned to feel anything properly.

The doctor gently pushed Malcolm back when he attempted to lift himself from the mattress. "Don't move. Your body has been inactive for months, and you're extremely weak."

Malcolm stared at him with growing confusion before his eyes moved toward Chloe again. His lips parted as though he wanted to ask something, but another coughing fit stopped him.

Chloe slowly reached into her coat for her phone.

Whatever tonight had been supposed to become had just changed completely.

Outside the room, Amenadiel stood several yards down the corridor behind the glass doors.

His dark coat hung perfectly around him while he watched the doctors crowd around Malcolm's bed. Nobody inside noticed him standing there.

Amenadiel's gaze remained fixed on Malcolm.

A faint satisfaction settled across his face as he watched the detective breathe on his own.

Lucifer's blood had confirmed what Amenadiel suspected. His brother was becoming vulnerable on Earth, and if Lucifer's attachment to humanity was responsible, then perhaps a human life could become the instrument that finally proved how dangerous that attachment truly was.

Malcolm Graham died for a few seconds, and Amenadiel had simply flown to hell and brought his soul back and fused it with his mortal body. He watched for another moment as Chloe stepped farther from the doctors and raised her phone toward her ear.

Then Amenadiel quietly turned away.

Without drawing a single glance from anyone around him, he walked down the hospital corridor and disappeared around the corner...

...

[Back at Lucifer's Penthouse]

Lucifer stood at his balcony, swirling the scotch in his glass as he looked out over the sprawling neon grid of Los Angeles. A low chuckle escaped him, his eyes glowing a predatory red for a fleeting second.

"Oh, the beautiful irony of it all," Lucifer purred, taking a slow sip of the amber liquid. "My big, holy brother... always the poster boy for 'Father's sacred rules.' And yet, here you are, committing the ultimate cosmic taboo. Snatching a rotting soul right out of my domain, breaking a perfectly good Hell loop, and bringing a dead man back to life... all without so much as a RSVP to the Lord of Hell. Tsk, tsk, Amenadiel. You really are getting entirely too predictable."
