[AN: Slightly unedited. Let me know if you find any mistakes.] [Can't believe we're at ch 30 lol]

I rested my forehead against Penny's shoulder and let out a long, defeated groan. Penny buried her face in my neck, her shoulders shaking with silent laughter as her hands slipped out from under my shirt's hem.

"Wait," I muttered, staring toward the door in disbelief as I tugged my T-shirt back into place. "How did he even know we were both in here? Did he hear us walking up the stairs from the fourth floor?"

"I think he has bat radar," Penny whispered, stepping back and running a hand through her slightly mussed hair while trying to look presentable. "Go get rid of him before he starts knocking again. Seriously, you know he won't stop."

She was right. If I ignored him, Sheldon would stand out there until sunrise, cycling through his three-knock routine until the paint chipped off the wood. Dragging a hand down my face, I walked over, unlocked the deadbolt, and pulled the door open just wide enough to block his view of the living room.

Sheldon stood in the hallway clutching a yellow legal pad against his chest, looking stiff, pale, and extraordinarily irritable.

"Now is really not a good time, Sheldon," I said flatly, keeping one hand braced high against the doorframe. "I'm kinda busy here."

"I am well aware of the nocturnal mating rituals common among young adults, and I assure you I take no pleasure in interrupting them," Sheldon replied briskly. "However, my presence is necessitated by a matter of urgent professional remediation that cannot wait until morning."

Behind me, Penny let out a poorly disguised snort from near the sofa, clearly abandoning any pretense of hiding.

I didn't budge an inch from the doorway. "Unless the building is actively on fire or someone's dying, it can wait until tomorrow."

"On the contrary, it cannot," Sheldon insisted, his left eye giving a tiny, betrayed twitch as his fingers tightened around the legal pad. "Following a thorough, painstaking audit of my whiteboard down in my apartment, I have concluded that during the transition between the third and fourth lines of my one-loop beta function derivation, a rogue vertical stroke of the dry-erase marker inadvertently converted a negative operator into a positive one."

I smiled, leaning lazily against the jamb. "Wait a second. Are you telling me a humble, lowly aerospace engineer found a mistake in the great Dr. Sheldon Cooper's quantum chromodynamics?"

"I am telling you nothing of the sort!" Sheldon snapped, his voice rising half an octave before he caught himself and glanced nervously down the stairwell, as if Howard might materialize out of thin air. "A conceptual error implies a failure of intellect. What occurred on my board was a purely mechanical transcription anomaly! The faulty felt tip of an inferior Expo marker dragged across the melamine surface while my higher cortical functions were already three steps ahead!"

"Uh-huh," I said, thoroughly enjoying the sight of him squirming. "So I was right."

Sheldon's jaw worked silently for three full seconds, his face cycling through several shades of suppressed agony before he thrust the yellow legal pad toward my chest. "I have drafted a binding mutual non-disclosure and non-aggression pact. Under its terms, I will officially waive my complaint to the building superintendent regarding the four-point-two-centimeter encroachment of your Audi's front tire in the basement garage. In exchange, you will sign here and swear a solemn oath never to mention this typographical blemish to Howard Wolowitz."

I looked down at the yellow legal pad, which was already filled with several paragraphs of dense, hand-printed clauses, and didn't even bother reaching for the pen he was holding out.

"Yeah, I'm not signing anything, Sheldon," I told him, folding my arms across my chest. "In fact, I have a much better idea."

Sheldon lowered the pad an inch, his eyes narrowing. "Better in what conceivable way? This document establishes a clear, legally actionable framework that protects both your vehicular negligence and my professional reputation."

"My counteroffer is a lot simpler," I said, keeping my tone pleasantly conversational. "Tomorrow evening during dinner, I get to sit in your spot on the couch... For the entire meal. In exchange, I won't breathe a word to Howard about your mistake, and you can forget all about my tire."

For a moment, the hallway went so quiet that I could hear the faint hum of the refrigerator inside my kitchen. Sheldon stared at me as though I had just demanded he saw off his own right foot with a butter knife.

"My spot?" he whispered, his voice trembling with genuine horror. "You want to sit in my spot?"

"From the first bite of takeout until the containers are cleared away," I confirmed cheerfully.

Sheldon paused for a moment. Then he got what I was trying to do. "Wait! This is extortion!" He protested, clutching the legal pad against his chest like a shield as his left eyelid began twitching again.

Penny walked to the door and looked at Sheldon's face before asking, "Okay. I've been meaning to ask. What's so special about that spot?"

Sheldon's eyes widened. "What's so special about that spot?" He closed his eyes and took a deep breath. "Penny, that spot is my single point of consistency in an ever-changing, chaotic universe! In the winter, it is close enough to the radiator to remain warm without inducing perspiration. In the summer, it sits directly in the path of the cross-breeze created by opening windows at two opposing points! Furthermore, it faces the television at an angle that is neither so direct as to discourage conversation, nor so steep as to create a parallax distortion!"

"Sounds pretty comfortable," I said, drumming my fingers lightly against the doorframe. "Can't wait to try it out tomorrow night."

Penny simply kept looking at Sheldon's face, processing everything he just said.

"This is outrageous!" Sheldon said. "You're exploiting a minor transcription error to deprive me of one of the few remaining sources of stability in an increasingly irrational universe!"

"One evening, Sheldon," I said with a smile. "That's all I'm asking. And Howard never hears a word about your mistake."

He looked down at his legal pad, then toward the stairs, visibly weighing the humiliation of losing his spot against the possibility of Howard Wolowitz discovering his error. Nearly thirty seconds passed before his shoulders sagged.

"Very well," Sheldon choked out, looking as though each syllable were physically scraping his throat on the way up. "You may occupy my spot for the duration of tomorrow evening's dinner, and not a single second longer. And if you so much as mention a dry-erase marker in Howard's presence, our truce is null and void."

"Pleasure doing business with you, Dr. Cooper," I said.

Before he could add a single stipulation about posture or crumb containment, I shut the door, clicked the deadbolt into place, and turned back toward Penny. She was staring at me with a mixture of awe and amusement.

"Okay, forget the fancy car," Penny said, wrapping her arms around my neck. "Watching you break Sheldon's brain like that might actually be the hottest thing I've ever seen. And he didn't even think about Leonard or me telling it to Howard."

"Glad to be of service," I murmured, catching her by the waist and pulling her right back against me. "Now, if I recall correctly, Ms. Omaha, we were right in the middle of your screen test."

...

[Sheldon's apartment]

Sheldon entered his apartment with the stiff, mechanical gait of a man marching toward his own execution, shutting the door behind him with unusual quietness. He was still clutching the unsigned yellow legal pad against his chest as he stared blankly toward the living room.

Over by the kitchen counter, Leonard lowered the glass of water he'd been drinking and watched his roommate with a mixture of curiosity and dread. He'd gotten back from dinner with Howard and Raj twenty minutes ago, just in time to witness Sheldon furiously scribbling out legal clauses before storming upstairs to 5B.

"So," Leonard said, leaning his hip against the edge of the counter. "How'd it go? Did you finally prove Karl was bluffing about your whiteboard?"

Sheldon didn't answer right away. He walked slowly toward the kitchen island, his gaze fixed on his spot on the sofa as though he were looking at a loved one who had just been given a terminal diagnosis.

"There was no mathematical error," Sheldon announced to the empty air, his voice tight and unnatural. "What transpired on my whiteboard was a purely mechanical failure of an inferior dry-erase marker. A rogue vertical deposit of blue ink inadvertently altered a negative sign during an otherwise flawless derivation."

Leonard blinked, nearly choking on his last swallow of water before setting his glass down by the sink. "Wait a second. Are you telling me Karl actually found a mistake in your equations from across the room while taking a twenty-question language test?"

"I just explained that it was a typographical blemish, Leonard, not a mistake!" Sheldon snapped, spinning around so fast that the pages of his legal pad fluttered. "Any primate with functioning vision and a rudimentary grasp of arithmetic could have noticed a stray vertical line! The fact that an aerospace engineer happened to glance at the board at that precise angle is nothing more than a statistical fluke!"

"Right, a fluke," Leonard said, failing to hide a small, amused smile as he glanced down at the yellow pad in Sheldon's white-knuckled grip. "And I'm guessing from the lack of a signature on your non-disclosure agreement that he didn't go for the parking-space truce?"

Sheldon's left eyelid gave a sharp, involuntary twitch. He walked over to his spot, lowered himself onto the cushion with reverent care. He placed the pad on the table and smoothed his hands over the fabric on either side of his thighs, looking like a medieval king preparing for an inevitable siege.

"Karl Peterson is a ruthless, unprincipled extortionist," Sheldon said hollowly. "He rejected a perfectly reasonable legal framework and instead leveraged the threat of informing Howard Wolowitz to extract a barbaric concession."

Leonard walked out of the kitchen, folding his arms as he stopped behind the armchair. "How much money did he ask for?"

"Worse," Sheldon whispered, staring bleakly at the blank television screen. "Tomorrow evening, for the entire duration of dinner, he has demanded the right to sit in my spot."

Leonard stared at him for three full seconds, waiting for the punchline. When none came, his eyebrows shot up behind his glasses. "Your spot? You actually agreed to let Karl sit in your spot?"

"What choice did I have?" Sheldon said as he looked up at Leonard. "If Wolowitz were to learn of that errant marker stroke, I would never hear the end of it! Every lunch at the university cafeteria, every comic-book store excursion, every casual hallway encounter would be reduced to an endless parade of insufferable smugness from a man who doesn't even possess a doctorate!"

"I don't know, Sheldon, I've lived with you for years and you won't even let me sit there when you're out of town," Leonard pointed out, shaking his head in disbelief. "Honestly, I'm amazed you didn't just pack a bag and fake your own death."

"Do not think the option didn't cross my mind," Sheldon muttered darkly. "Moreover, Penny was present during the negotiation! She even joined us at the doorway and watched as that insufferable engineer systematically dismantled my psychological well-being!"

Leonard's amused expression vanished instantly, the smile fading from his face as his shoulders dropped an inch. He looked away toward the front door, suddenly acutely aware of the ceiling right above their heads. "Oh. Penny's up there with him?"

"Of course she is. As I was forced to point out to Karl when he attempted to bar the door, I am entirely cognizant of the nocturnal mating rituals of young adults," Sheldon said dismissively, completely oblivious to the way Leonard winced and walked back into the kitchen to pour himself another glass of water he didn't actually need. "Honestly, Leonard, the sheer lack of professional decorum in this building is appalling. Between their noisy socializing in the stairwell and the impending occupation of my spot tomorrow evening, I seriously doubt I will get a single REM cycle of sleep tonight."

Leonard stared at the door for a few seconds, imagining what those two were doing upstairs, before letting out a slow breath. "Yeah," he muttered under his breath. "Tell me about it."
